Noise (not the fan)

Hey
so, i just picked up my macbook pro from the table after going to get a drink
now, there is this rumbling noise coming from around under the power button/delete key area...it sounds like a remote conrol car turne on its back, when the wheels are spinng (yes, thats the best comparison I could think of)
anyone have any ideas what this may be?
thanks

Is it this sound?

I believe if it is, (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm totally wrong) it is a problem with something called the screen inverter and I'm actually gonna quote homertime33:
"... Apple has recognized this problem - a loud buzzing noise which is variable across different screen brightness settings - and has a definitive solution - replacing the screen inverter."
Good luck.
P.S. It actually does sound like a remote control car turned on it's back

Try an SMC Reset. (System Management Controller)
Shutdown>unplug from power for ten minutes>press and hold in the power button for ten seconds>startup again.
Also try a PRAM Reset. (Parameter RAM)
Shutdown. At the bootup chime, hold down CMD-Option-P-R together, wait for two more chimes, total three, then let go of all keys to finish booting,
If this doesn't do it, run the Hardware Test in Extended

  • Why does my Mac air make a lot of noise with the fan inside?

I bought Mac air one year ago. at the beginning, I satisfied with the product. However, 8 months later, the laptop made a lot of noise from the fan inside. When I I run about 4 or 5 solfwares, it starts warmer and make noise. I feel so unhappy with this. How can I fix it. I bought AppleCare programme for 3 years as well
    Thanks

The mid 2011 MacBook Air fans are pretty quiet but not silent and since they are the only mechanical decice you'll hear - there's no hard drive or DVD drive to make noise - it is possible that what you hear is normal. On the other hand, fans can go bad - bearings fail and dust an make the blades become unbalanced. None of us can help - you'll need to take the computer to a repair center or Apple Store and let an Apple repair person determine if the fans need replacing or not. If so, your warranty will cover the cost.

  • Horrible buzzing and clicking noise from the fan - DV6 3046eo

    Hello!
Two weeks ago the fan on my DV6 3046eo laptop began to make almost continueosly buzzing and clicking noise. My laptop is less than an year old (bought in December 2010) and such noise has never occurred before. I have done some "research" to find the reason, but without luck. I have read on Internet that the fan may be broken or loose. I am just using the web and listening the music. I have to admit I played some demanding games on the computer, like BBC2 and Dirt3. But the problem occured later. I can't imagine what will happen if I play games on my laptop now...
The fan seems to cool down the laptop, but it is like something is hitting it every third second or soand preventing it from running silently. The noise is strange and irritating because the frequency changes rapidly. Sometimes when I move the laptop or hit it a bit gently, the loud noise suddenly disappears and the normal continueosly noise takes over (I am ok with the latter one, though). After some while it appears again. The noise come and go. Reboot doesn't help much. I have also used an airspray can, but to no avail. I am thinking about getting the fan replaced by HP before the 1 year warranty runs out. I am not too comfortable to do so myself. What's the reason for this noise and what should I do?
    Thanks in advance!
    Sandip

    Still no comments?
I am getting sick of this noise. I can't bring my laptop to school because it makes too much noise. Please help me.

  • Squeeky noise from the fan?

Hya, i have a nice mac mini, works like dream ofcourse. However the last few weeks there is a kind of squeeky noise comming from it. I think it is the fan or so. It sounds like cd drive trying to read a damaged disk, but less loud. And it has the rithme of something like a horse galloping.
So, what dou you think, should i open it and lubricate the fan, or just clean in maybe? Or just see wheter i still have apple support

Mac Mini 1.86 duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First off I'd say look to see if you still have warranty cover and if so, have it looked at. Squeaking noises are not often associated with impending system failures, but they can be indicative of significant faults, so it's worth having it checked out if you can.
If that option isn't available and you are comfortable with the notion of opening it up, doing so should be able to help determine what is causing it. A screwdriver with the blade rested lightly on the optical then internal hard drive with your ear up against the blunt end can help localize the noise if it's not immediately apparent. If it's the fan, you'd likely need a graphite-based lubricant rather than oil, and if that doesn't cure it, it would tend to suggest a damaged thrust face on the bearing, which would mean the fan needs to be replaced.

  • IMac Fan Noise - Not The Usual Problem

    Hi,
I have seen plenty of discussions on iMac fan noise but mine is a little different. A week ago, a 'tink' noise (similar to tapping your fingernail on a glass) started coming from my mid 2011 iMac. At first, I thought it was the "click of death" for my hard drive, so I replaced it myself. This didn't fix the noise, so I ran an extended hardware test. This came back with a 4MEM error. I had some spare RAM, fitted it, ran the test again, no 4MEM error.
So, I booted the iMac again. 'Tink'... 'tink'. I finally located it to the bottom right of my iMac, where the optical drive fan is located. This fan has always rattled a little now and again but now it seems intent on driving me round the bend with its very own form of torture. At first, the 'tink' was now and again, but now it constant. 'tinktinktinktinktink'. Is there a way to stop the optical fan for now? I don't use the optical drive often anyway. Or would it just be a replacement fan?
Resetting SMC or PRAM does nothing.

This may be way off target, in which case ignore me. Do you have an app called Free Memory installed? There have been a few posts on here where it seems to cause repetitive odd noises to occur, particularly when running Mavericks?

  • Black macbook: not sure if its the fan, or something else (noise)

I got this macbook is september. I had no issues with it, when suddenly it began making noises. Now, I'm a gadget-blog reader, so I've been aware of Macbooks making the "moooo" sound from the fan; however, I'm not sure if my noise is the fan or something else. I get more of a "whrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" noise.
    1) I have the macbook plugged in
    2) I leave it on all the time
    3) It began to hear the "whrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" when:
    a) activate visualizer in iTUNES
    b) download shows off iTUNES
    c) have a bunch of windows open and the 512MB Memory is struggling to access each window, if I say, I want to close them.
Considering this is the uncrashable, flexible, awesome OSX, and should be pesk-free, like say WINXP...I would expect such problems to not exist on the glossy OSX.
I'm currently studying abroad in the United Kingdom. I bought this macbook in San Francisco just before I left. I have plenty of warranty left. Is this a big issue? It annoys the **** out of me. None of the macbooks demoed in the store had this problem. So in a way, this is false advertising, since I'm reading that a lot of people have this noise issue.
I've fully updated my firmwares with software updater, but I still get the noise. So I'm at situation that needs some outside help as to what I should do.
    Thanks.

hard to say if it is serious or not. have you tried resetting the pmu? http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319 that could very well help the matter.

  • Fan Noise of the GT72

    Hi there. :3
After around 2 or so months of working, I should eventually have myself an MSI GT72 gaming laptop. Preferably one with the latest i7 5700HQ processor and NVIDIA 980M GTX (4GB)
I've found quite a few online with good prices that interest me.
I am a little worried about the fan noise of the system though. I've read quite a few responses on here and other forums that both fans can tend to be very loud during gaming, even when you've only been playing any game for around 10 or so minutes. I'm not sure if that's true but reading the responses on the forums stating this makes me sometimes feel like wanting to purchase an different laptop (ASUS G751) since that one has an better cooling system. However, the fact that everything is far more accessible and easy to clean in the GT72 and that the GPU can be upgraded to a new one later in the years ahead keeps me somewhat glued to the GT72.
Yes, GT72 is an extreme gaming machine but there's only so much noise from the fans that one can withstand from an laptop (gaming or non-gaming) before it begins to get very irritating to the ears, especially when the game in question that's currently running on the machine isn't exactly graphically demanding in the first place. As long as the fan noise on the system is bearable and isn't too annoying whilst I'm gaming at night-time, when others are asleep, then I'm sure I'll be satisfied with the GT72 once it's in my possession.
I guess I just need some reassurance from a lot of GT72 owners on here who have had the GT72 in front of them for a long while and been pushing it with very graphically demanding games. Any positive comments regarding the noise of the fans would be cool.
Oh, I've also noticed that MSI have released an Beta 'Silent Option' fan speed control tool on their forums recently (on the 4th June 2015 - https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=256233.0) so I'll definitely be using that tool whenever I feel the fan speed kicking in a bit too much and sounding a bit like an jet-engine. I'll play around with the percentages and hopefully get the perfect settings, of which I'll certainly share on the thread or in an new topic so that the rest of my GT72 buddies can have an quiet (and cool) laptop. :3

How do you like silent option tool after using it?
I'd love to give the tool a try myself, it's just that I don't own an GT72 laptop yet. I'm saving up for one. :3 I'll order one eventually.
Have you tried it? How well does it work?

  • Fan was making a whirring sound and now it sounds like the fan isn't turning at all? Please help!

I've had this whirring noise on the fan for a couple of weeks, I've vacumed it as best I can without opening my imac up but the noise didnt stop (like a whirring clicking noise with the fan, like it was stuck on something). I've booked it in to be looked at in the Apple store on Monday (soonest appointment avaliable), but I've just switched it on and the fan clicked a couple of times and then went quiet? Am I safe to use my mac? WIll it overheat? I'm scared to use it because the fan doesnt sound like its running at all now ? I've got 5 photo sessions and a wedding to edit and I may cry! Any help or suggestions would be AMAZING! Thanks in advance!
Ps these are my mac details
    iMac
    21.5-inch, Mid 2011
Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Pps I'm a bit rubbish with tecnical things so sorry if this is something obvious!

Do 2-3 SMC resets and see if this takes care of the problem. If it does not then book an appointment with your local Apple Store to have it looked at by a Genius.
Instructions for the SMC reset are in https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603

  • HD noise, and the system hangup

The iBook i have just started doing some noise, like the fan or HD. The trouble is that it keeps hanging up. I try to restart, and it happens again 2 or 3 times. It freezes at the spining colorful circle, before the desktop appears.
Is there something i can do?

    Hi gseckel,
The first thing to do is to try a safe boot:
If your computer is on, turn it off in the usual way.
Press the power button to turn it back on and immediately after the chime press and hold the 'shift' ket.
Continue to hold the 'shift' key until you see the spinning gear wheel.
Leave the computer to continue to start-up. This will take longer than usual as various diagnostic and repair functions take place.
    Log in at the prompt.
Wait while the computer finishes its 'boot'.
Restart in the normal way without holding the shift key.
That may be enough to fix the problem, if not post back.

  • How to fix the constant noise in the left corner of the Macbook Air which is connected not with a fan?

How to fix the constant noise in the left corner of the Macbook Air which is connected not with a fan?

Unfortunately if there are various colours across the screen then you have broken the LCD Screen and it will need replacing. If the colours change when you press the area lightly then this is another symptom that you've broken the screen.
Sorry to give the bad news!

  • My iMac goes to sleep and does not wake up, the fans also make a loud noise

My iMac has just had its hardisk replaced, few months ago. Now whenever I go into any website, do downloads and when it goes into screensaver it makes a **** of a noise then when I leave it it does not go into sleep but shuts down. If I try and restart straight away it won't switch on I have to wait a while. I think it gets very hot and might be shutting down. I have cleaned the fans and reset the SMU and PRAM. Any other suggestions or do I need to replace the fans???????????????????

You certainly have a heat problem, since the machine needs to cool down before you can turn it back on. Have you opened the case (as long as it's not an iSight) and vacuumed the fans and air vents? If that doesn't help, you will probably need to take it in to be looked at. Have you checked t see if you qualify for one of Apple's Repair extension programs?

    Nope. Usual suspects.

    Hey,
My friend had a very similar issue to yours. The issue came down to the pins of the MagSafe not meeting with the MacBook perfectly causing the lights and the transfer of power to be wacko. I'm not sure if this is issue that your experiencing, but its worth checking out the pins and the MagSafe area on your MacBook for debris.
Troubleshooting Magsafe power adapters with stuck pins
If that is all clear, then I would suggest you call AppleCare or take it in to an Apple Store to have it checked out.
