Noise of WHITE iMacs

Due to gradient problems of the new ALU iMacs I consider buying an old WHITE one (of September 2006).
The new ALU ones are very quiet, but I've heard that some of the old WHITE ones are noisy (fan?).
Can you confirm this?
Regarding noise, are there differences between 20" and 24" WHITE iMacs?
Thanks!

NO noise refers to the fans on my new, just bought Jan 2008 iMac 2.4 ghz. The fans run constantly now (they run automatically quietly but I have adjusted them to cool this mac down to temps under 50ºC)
My white iMac 2006 never made a peep. The screen just kept developing vertical lines. Please check out the display section of discussions with regard to that model. Be aware.

I purchased the multi-user iworks (yes back when it was new, 2009 or 2010 and recently had to replace my white imac's hard drive (but didn't pay to fix the CD drive).  My iworks does not have a serial number on the box and now that my CD drive isn't working how can I reinstall this software?

Buy or borrow an external USB optical drive.
See the confirmation email or covering letter to obtain the serial number. If you have lost it, contact the supplier.

  • Are the screens on white iMac 20" better than those on new 24"?

I have read so much about the troubles with the 20" and 24" Aluminum iMac screens that I'm afraid to buy one now, and was thinking of buying a refurb'd white (plastic) iMac from Apple. Is the screen tech in the white version better than that in the 24" Alum? I have an old 2.0 white iMac and have never had any trouble with the screen at all.

Thanks for these pix. I have two more questions,
    1) Previous poster suggests that specs for the white iMac screens were lower
than specs for ALU iMac screens--is this true and in what particulars?
Other than viewing angle and brightness, Apple doesn't publish any meaningful
    screen specs.
The ALU screens are a little brighter -- entirely too bright -- and they don't have
sufficient adjustment range to reduce the brightness for comfortable viewing with
    normal home lighting levels.
The 20" ALU viewing angle specs are much poorer than the white 20" or any of
the 24" models. In practice, the difference is easily noticable even to the most
    casual observer.
    2) Does the 24" white iMac have the same screen that the 20" white iMac has?
All 24" iMacs have expensive S-IPS LCD panels. That's the same basic technology
and from the same manufacturer as the Apple Cinema Displays. (As discussed
previously, some (many?) 24" ALUs have/had problems with uneven backlighting.)
    Some white 20" units use exactly the same S-IPS panel as 20" Cinema Displays;
some others came with an excellent-quality S-PVA display. I believe all 20" iMacs,
at least as far back as the G5 PPC, used similarly high-quality (gorgeous!) panels.
The 20" ALU iMacs all have much lower-quality TN panels (from various sources).
The 17" white Intel iMacs also use the lower-quality TN panels.
To see what display you currently have, cut-n-paste the following command line
into Terminal.app -- then look it up in the panel database at tftcentral.co.uk:
    ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/\[^<\]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6
I don't know if the 24" white iMac refurb would be a better choice than the 20"
    white (or the 20/24" ALU).
IMO, there's no contest in 20" size -- the white iMac displays are vastly superior.
If you're lucky enough to get a good display, the ALU 24" is very attractive; OTOH,
I have no performance complaints with my white 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo -- and it
was $600 less than my 24" ALU reject.

  • Netboot Issue - White Imac to 2007 AL Imac

    Hi
We have just purchased 20 Mid 2007 Aluminium iMac's to add to our existing network. - The one i have taken out of the box was pre-installed with 10.4.11 with a Leopard Upgrade Disk inside (said that Leopard is not installed on the machine but can be upgraded by use of this disc).
We have a 10.4.10 Netboot image (built on a 17" 2006 White Intel iMac) on our XServe that I have tried to restore onto one of the new Aluminium Imac's.
    The actual netboot operation worked fine and the operating system booted up on the new Aluminium Imac - but then i have found;
    a) the onboard LAN port is greyed out and cant be configured
    b) the isight camera does not work
    c) the sound does not work
I downloaded the 10.4.11 combo updater and ran that on the machine hoping that it would replace drivers, etc - no chance.
Is there a way i can get the specific drivers for this hardware, as I dont want to have to install all of the programs and settings that we have for our network. then have to clone it 20 times.
Or is there a way i can remove the settings for the missing items (network, isight, sound) from the computer prefs and get them rebuilt on system startup?
Frustrated that Apple support has been less than forthcomming, with the reply of
"upgrade to Leopard" - Upgrading to Leopard is not an option.
Not understanding the problem which i was facing.
I might have to return the 20 and just get hold of 20 of the White Imac's - which are on sale from our reseller.

Thank you so much for your information.  I have been using a Seagate GoFlex portable drive as my back up disc with TimeMachine on my iMac.  The AirPort Time Capsule is arriving tomorrow with my new iMac.  My question to you is this:  Will it be easier to wait till tomorrow, set up my AirPort Time Capsule and back up my old iMac to it and then use it with the Startup Assistant to transfer my stuff or will it be easier just to use my GoFlex back up disc?  I have had some issues in the last year where Time Machine send me a message that the (daily) back up failed because the file got corrupted and I have been unable to fix it so that I have to reformat the disc and back up everything I have.  Just an FYI, I don't have a huge amount of stuff on my iMac even if is almost 7 years old....I have 900 GB out of 1TB available.  This is one of the reasons I felt it's time to replace my iMac.
Right now I have a clean encrypted back up on the GoFlex but I don't want to transfer anything I shouldn't to my new iMac.  Please advice and thank you.

  • 20" white iMac: lines on screen

Ever since installing Snow leopard on my 20" 2.16 Ghz white iMac I get strange lines across my screen when I do things like opening a Finder window or change the screen resolution. Any suggestions appreciated.

    I have iMac (Early 2006) http://support.apple.com/kb/SP35
This issue first occurred when I upgraded to 10.5. And now after 2 days running (or - trying to run) Snow Leo I can say - no improvement. I have lines and other shapes, all across the display. Always. Anyways - maybe You'd feel better about Your situation when I told that this issue leads to total hang and thus "hard restart" as only solution. Both on 10.5 and 10.6 it's happening about 6 times. A day. But You're not alone http://getsatisfaction.com/apple/topics/2006imac_graphics_card_crashfreeze and as Richard said - just google up.

  • Snow Leopard on a 1.83 White iMac Core Duo w/ GMA 950 Integrated Graphics?

Hi. My parent's computer is an older, white iMac with a GMA 950 integrated graphics. Currently it's running Tiger and it runs very well.
However, I am in town for a short bit and was thinking about updating their system while I'm here. Does the iMac 1.83 with integrated graphics run Snow Leopard very well? Or should I just leave Tiger on it?

Anyone with a 1.83 iMac Core Duo with integrated graphics (NOT the ATX 128 mb graphics) running Snow Leopard?

  • What's the chance of a new white iMac coming out in the future?

I love my white iPhone and iPad (and various iPod's)...it would be awesome to get my hands on a new white iMac.  The brushed aluminum looks good and all...and I'm sure it's ultra rigid...but I'm really wanting a refresh of the white late 2006 iMac. See this photo: http://www.uniqueskins.com/images/products/1465/resize_imac24in_2006.png
The polycarbonate case with the 27 inch screen....I would be in heaven.

  • White Imac and Leopard

    Hi,
My white Imac has Tiger, should I upgrade to Leopard?
    what are the known issues?
How is Leopard working with Adobe CS3 applications?
Do they run better on Leopard?
    thanks.

First ask yourself is this your primary work machine? If work flow is your number one priority you probably won't want to make any changes that might interrupt your work flow. However if you have the time to install the upgrade without it impacting your business then go for it. I am running Leopard and have not found any problems that I couldn't work through and the new features are great. I have heard that there are some issue with CS3 in Leopard that are awaiting updates to resolve but I do not know what they are as CS3 runs great for me. Then again CS3 is not of my main applications that I use. You might search around and find out what exact issue CS3 might have in Leopard.
If you are concerned and have an external drive, you could clone your system as it is before you upgrade to Leopard just in case something goes wrong you could restore your system to how it was. Otherwise I recommend doing an Archive and Install. When you boot up to the Leopard install disk and get to the part where you select the drive to install Leopard on, before you click install, click on the Options button. There change it from Upgrade to Archive and Install. Also put a check mark in the box that says Preserve Network and User data. Doing this will ensure that you get a clean install of the new system but it will migrate all of your applications and user settings for you.
BTW How much RAM do you have in your system? CS3 uses a lot in general but Leopard also tends to use more RAM than Tiger does. This is a good thing.

  • White iMac (2006) and Mountain Lion

I have a white iMac (2006) running 10.6.8 and I have software I want to use on it that requires 10.7. I called Apple and the support guy said as long as I have 3-gig of RAM I can go ahead and install Mountain Lion. When I go to the App Store, it says that my machine cannot support Mountain Lion so it won't let me download it.
This is really frustrating. Any suggestions?

To Upgrade to Mountain Lion... Your Mac must be one of the following models:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)

  • Weird noises in my imac

I noticed a noise in my imac when it's accessing data. its hard to describe it, i would say kind of "static" in a way. this might have started after I installed new memory in both slots. I thought I installed them correctly since my computer recognizes them and status says OK for both. sounds like the noise is coming from the bottom where the RAM is.

Most likely this is your hard disk. The platters spin and the read/write mechanism moves in and out. Some noise is normal. If the noise sounds abnormal, you should make sure you have a good backup of your hard drive, so you can recover it the disk crashes.

  • Blue/White iMAc G3 233mhz/32mg 512cache

have a blue /white iMac G3 and when i turn it on a flashing and mac folder began flashing. i have tried everything in resetting nvram holding command option and p and r keys also of key . I remover the old battery it had no voltage rest cuda button same flashing Question mark and mac face. I do not have any of the original cds, if anyone has any would appricate a copy of these cds if all possible unless someone has any other sugguestions NEED HELP PLEASE. I have a ImacG5 and tried loading the operating disc to see if it would boot up no luck

    Hi, abelmichael -
The information Kappy gave you in your other thread is correct - the flashing icons when you try to boot indicate the machine can not find a valid OS from which to boot.
That can be caused by a weak or dead internal battery. You said you checked the battery, and it was dead - you did not mention whther you had replaced it. If you have not yet replaced it with a fresh one, do so before going any further with trouble-shooting. Reset the CUDA again when replacing the battery.
If that machine had had OSX on it previously, then its firmware has probably been updated, and you can install OSX on it again.
If it did not have OSX on it previously, and if you are not sure that the firmware on it has been updated, do not try to install OSX on it. IN the case of early iMacs, just booting the machine to OSX when the firmware has not been updated can result in loss of video.
You can get any firmware update needed for a CRT iMac from here -

  • 17" White iMac w/Bootcamp XP won't boot.

I have a 17' white iMac with Leopard and Bootcamp with XP installed, and it was stopped by punching the power button.
Now it won't boot at all. Usually I just get the gray screen that comes up after the chime and a moveable cursor.
Sometimes, if I unplug it for several hours, I can boot and hold the OPTION key and get the two HD-pictures for OSX and XP, but when I get these it will boot into the op sys, but then hangs.
I can boot into TARGET mode and have ordered a 800/400 Firewire cable to try and get stuff off the computer to my 24" 09 iMac. Most of my data is on the Bootcamp Windows partition.
    (a) Will reinstalling OSX from DVD destroy Bootcamp partion?
    (b) Any way to run OSX (or XP) from DVD so I can access the HD?
    (c) Any other tricks or links to things to do?
    Thanks.

That "you have viruses" message was a fake, designed to scare you into purchasing the scammer's fake software. Apple has information and instructions for removal:

    For additional information, see also:
    http://www.reedcorner.net/news.php/?p=138

If you do a forum search on Mac Defender, Mac Protector or Apple Security Center (this fake has a lot of diffeent names) you will also find a lot of threads about this.
If you gave these crooks your credit card information, immediately contact your credit card company and report the fraud. I'd further suggest that you request that they put a block on your account and issue a new card number or you may find unauthorized transactions appearing in our account.
I doubt that this caused damage to your Windows boot - I've not seen any reports of this happening - but I can't be certain. Get this fake junk removed and see where things stand.

  • White iMac don't wake from sleep

    Hi,
I have a white iMac 17" that is working very well, except for one thing: if it falls on sleep mode, sometimes it won't wake up.
This computer had a Lion fresh install a few month ago, so I do not think it is a software issue. It looks like something hardware that makes it not wake from sleep.
any idea what's wrong and how to repair this?
    Thanks

10.7.3 did not cause your problem. Log into another account on your computer and see if the problem is replicated. If you don't have a second user account then create one. If the problem isn't replicated then you have a software problem that you need to track down in your normal user account.

  • Advice needed on white imac 24" screen - black levels

Hi, I'm new to these forums as I'm a new mac user. So far the experience has been pretty good!
I have a white 24" imac, and the colours and black levels look pretty ok in a normally lit room.
However when I turn the lights off (room is in the dark) and view say a black screensaver, the whole screen appears greyish rather than a pure black. The greys appear quite even though, no splotches or anything.
Is this something I should expect, especially for the iMac screen which is known to be an IPS lcd panel? Or should I give apply a call about it?
Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

More than likely that is caused by the backlight and is normal.

You can hold down the Mute button on your keyboard when you start your Mac or use some preferences panes (I didn't tried them) like :
