Noise on output?

Hi all,
I've got a 2.16/2GB/7200 MBP on order, and as a laptop DJ, I'm VERY concerned about the reported whining. Not so bothered about it in terms of ambient noise, but if there's burbling, whining or anything else untoward coming from the headphone output, I'm definitely going to have to cancel my order and hold off til it's fixed.
Could anyone confirm or deny that the whining is replicated through the headphone socket please? My dual 2GHz G5 has exactly this problem, but that doesn't matter as I don't use the headphone out on it at all. For gigs with the MBP, though, I need to be able to rely on said socket...
Cheers!

Although the output jack does not produce the whining noise (that you can get easily rid of with the Mirror widget trick anyway) it does produce a pretty high noise level.
When I have my stereo cranked almost all the way up, I can hear a small buzz coming through the speakers. However, if I connect the same audio cord to my old PowerBook 12" with the same volume level output, there is not even the slighest sound.
My MacBook Pro is definitely sending some noise through the output jack. YMMV. It's probably not an issue if I use the optical output though. When you are paying this much for a computer you are expecting everything to be perfect, at least not worse than the old model you had...

  • Noise Reduction output Issue

Every time I apply noise reduction in LR3 Beta 2 the adjustments appear in the preview window in LR but as soon as I export as jpeg the processing dissapear.  It only happens with noise reduction - all other processing stays on the image.  Any Help?

I do notice a difference between the image quality in the Library vs. Develop and noticed that shortly after i had posted the most recent response. I am just a little confused by your post when you say that the effects are only displayed on a 1:1 or higher scale.  When i apply any form of NR the previewer - even at FIT - still shows adjustments happening. Is it simply rendering what it thinks may be adjusting or can it not comprehend the larger scale so it just smooths out some details?
And even at that, if i am able to achieve a desired effect in the previewer of Develop - shouldn't Lightroom be able to export that image that is it showing me?  I am confident that i am able to reproduce the desired look in photoshop - basically through some smoothing - but the ability to create that in LR would save a lot of time.
I digress i am not very confident in my use of Lightroom as i have only been using it for a brief time - switching primarily from aperture i find lightroom a lot easier and more efficent.

  • Background Noise Caused By Quicktime

    and I quote the title.
I have had this problem pretty long but now Ive head enough.. I'll explain the situation. It started when Itunes launched Itunes + quicktime Pack. At a fresh install of windows XP SP2 and only just the audiodrivers installed there was no noise at all. After I installed the new Itunes + quicktime pack the murmur was there. High frequency noise, somewhat outputting the things that the computer is doing. It reacts on mousemovements, drag and drop. and it never stops, atleast that is what I thought..
Until, I went to the apple.com/trailers site and hold down the volume button at the in Firefox opened quicktime player. Then the murmur was gone, but when I released it, it was back again. very weird.. In a few days im going to reinstall windows again, but I don't think that is the problem..
Any one else ideas what It could be ? It are mostly high freq. tones, those are the most annoying
    thanks In advanced

  • Noise generation, FRF measurement

I would like to do a FRF measurement of a mechanical system (not sound, not vibration)
In order to do this, I need to:
    1. generate noise, and feed it to the input of my mechanical system
    2. measure the input (noise) and output simultaneously. Collect the data
    3. Use the collected data to compute FRF
    So,
    1. Is there any NI hardware, and LabVIEW block, which allows me to generate/output noise to my system
    2. Is there any data logging hardware? It should be able to log the input, and output value, both of which are analog

Even though you are not measuring vibration, it sounds like you are performing measurements of dynamic signals. Even if you don't have the Sound and Vibration Toolkit, install the evaluation and check out the Averaged Frequency Response (DAQmx) example. From the description:
This VI generates and acquires data for an averaged frequency response measurement. This VI performs a continuous acquisition and stops when the averaged measurement is complete. You specify the initial settling time of the device under test and the averaging parameters to use for the frequency response measurement.
You can easily add DC offset to the excitation signal. You can use the SV example as a template to build your own VI where you can replace the SV VIs with general LV VIs. While you have it installed, you may also want to check out the SVL Measure Propagation Delay VI to measure the propagation delay between your motor drive input and the resulting output speed as you may need to account for this delay.

  • IPhone 3G Static noise due to RF and EM emission and heard at nearby Active

Whenever im using iphone, playing music or talking then there is this huge emission that is captured by any nearby speakers within two feet.
This is actually so bad that i can not even listen to music connected to any speakers because the static ads up the the music, this is very frustrating, I might have to return to apple for another one if this is perticular to my iphone.
My guess is that the iphone is loaded with tons of RF / EM emission not properly shielded or design flaw.
    Genius, wher art thou

Same thing happened to me on a recording session a month ago, Logic 8 and the Apogee Duet.
Thing is I heard this static type noise, it was kind of low, at the time I thought it was just noise on output / playback.
It never occurred to me that this static noise was being recorded.
I don't remember the iPhone being that close, but it was in the vicinity.
Mackie HR 824's are shielded heavily (and would only apply to output playback, not the input), but the Apogee Duet or input cables, I'll bet are not, and the noise got into the Apogee Duet, and it was recorded
Thing is I recognized the static sound right away, as the awful static of the iPhone, when I later played back the recording.
Are you guys saying this does not occur when setting it to 3G, I am going to test that.

  • Can I use one waveform to subtract from the other one in labview?

    Here is the thing.
I am using DAQ to aquire amplified signal to measure its noise of output. However DAQ would contribute a little noise to the whole system. My thinking is to capture two waveforms of noise from DAQ itself and the whole system(amplified circuit and DAQ) and then make the subtration calculation between them.Is it possible to make it with labview? How?
Or can I aquire two groups of signal using DAQ at the same time? If it can't be realised is there some other way?
    Thanks

If I'm reading you right I don't think your original concept is valid.  If you have already done a good job with wiring, shielding, etc.  You won't be able to simply subtract a data collection of "just noise" from a collection of "noise plus signal" and expect the noise to cancel itself out.  It's random.  A better method would be to collect the same signal several times and then average the results.  Even that will only reduce repetitive components in the noise.
As smercurio said however, the most important consideration is to make sure your connection method, grounding, shielding, timing, etc is top notch to prevent noise from contaminating the signal in the first place.  I generally use differential signals through good quality twisted pairs with the shield connected on the DAQ side only (to prevent ground loops).

  • How to export a continous waveform data from a while loop?

    Hello there,
I need to add noise signal to my waveform which is read from a binary file. I use noise generate vi (deleted the density part) from NI example as my sub VI, and put it into a while loop in order to get the continous noise signal, but I don't know how to export this data. There's no waveform come out from the noise waveform output tunnel (on the while loop). I used output tunnel, didn't work, tried shift register, didn't work... Can anybody help?
Also, how to fix the dt problem for the noise generate vi and my original data ( from binarty file)
    Thanks in advance!

    hi
I think notifier can do the trick (an example is shown in the master-slave template).
Another possibility can be a FG (or action engine, look for the nugget ActionEngine, it will change your LV-coding life !)

  • How to maintain pixel size when exporting?

When exporting an edited image (ex: 20 MB) from Aperture to a desktop folder, I choose file>export>versions>jpeg original.  When I open the exported image in the desktop folder (it opens in preview), the Tools/Inspector window says that the image is now only 2MB.  This has not always happened.  Can someone tell me what I might be doing or not doing that is causing this, or what settings I need to change?
    Thank you.

    golindy,
JPEG is a lossy format that relies on two ways of reducing the file size. The first is the lossy part that throws away data that is percieved to be unimportant for human vision, the resulting data is then further compressed losslessly using the same type of compression zip uses (this is why zipping a JPEG doesn't lead to further size reduction).
The more you throw away in the first part, the more likely the image is to suffer from 'compression artefacts'. The number you select on export determines how much data gets thrown away.
I don't know what '12' officially means for Apple, but from eyeballing files, it seems like it throws away pretty close to zero. So a file output with 12 is top quality.
Aperture has always worked the same way here, it hasn't changed during any update.
However, some things that may affect it are:
    1) The effeciciency of the both compression algorithms seems to improve over time.
So a year ago, a 20 Mega Pixel image might compress down to a 5MB file using a quality setting of 10. Today that very same file may compress down to a 4MB file at quality 10. But it's important to note, the quality of the file will be the same, quality 10. All that has happened is the more efficient algorithm has allowed an extra 1MB of file space saving.
    2) The raw converters periodically get improved with new rendering. One area that has continually improved in Apeture is noise supression and more natural sharpening.
These impact the first part of the compression process. A noisy image with harsh shapening will compress less than a clean image with more subtle sharpening. So better raw processing can also impact the exported size. Note, this one works in both directions, an improved conversion that resolves more details will output a larger file size, whereas an improved conversion that gives less noise will output a smaller file size.
So in your case, I think what was happening was you were not losing quality, just gaining file size efficiency, and now you have changed to quality 12, you are exploiting that file space saving by now outputting higher quality files.

  • IPod 3rd gen not working with universal dock

My old iPod 3rd gen (15GB, touch wheel, dock connector) worked great with the old dock, until the latter started scratching noises when outputting audio to my stereo. Still charges the iPod though.
So, I tried old iPod with the universal dock I got for my Touch and found the following problems:
    1. iPod is not being charged through new dock plugged to wall adapter
    2. touch wheel menu control is not working as long as iPod sits in universal dock plugged to the wall adapter - the sound of clicks is all I get, but no control of menu or any other function. In order to select playlist or use any other function through touch wheel or any of 4 buttons I need to unplug power from the dock (it is not charging anyway)
    3. remote is not working at all
    Otherwise playback is OK.
Any ideas what may be the culprit here? Apple states that Universal dock is compatible with 3rd generation of iPod and up.

    Hello Andrew,
What a coincidence as I too have had to find a new dock for my 3rd gen ipod. This week I purchased an Apple AV Connection kit - but found that it would not charge the ipod or respond to the remote. I also bought and tried a Belkin AC adapter with cable to power up the ipod but it too would not charge the ipod.
To see if these units were working I connected them to a friend's brand new ipod classic and both the Belkin and Apple AV Connection Kit worked fine - so there is something different about the 3rd gen ipod.
I'm not sure if this helps you - but at least you know it's not just your ipod that is not working with the new dock.

  • Audigy 2 AC3 decoder level trouble

    Hi everybody.
As you know, the Adg2 ZS card can decode AC3 and DTS using SPDIF output when playing DVD's. With many discs, like LOTR - The two towers at the fall of Gandalf scene for example, I can hear strange noises when output level raises too much. But it is with "Laura?Pausini?Li've from San Siro" when this problem gets unstandable. I can notice, that the recording level of the Dolby Digital track, is too loud compared with most of comercial musical and cinema DVD, and when output level reaches high points, I can hear a lot of crackle and nosises.
I'm afraid that this is due to the fact that the hardware decoder cannot handle the (sometimes) extrem sound signal input. I'm using Purevideo from nVidia and I've tried to pull down the digital volume control. I've tried with -35dB for example, but it doesn't seem to work.
    Any help?

The reason for the crackling phenomenon is that the frequency gain has exceeded a threshold thus causing clipping to take place. A workaround will be enabling SVM on your Audigy Console. However, enabling this will have the effect of reducing the audio dynamics.
Is there another way to workaround for the clipping/peaking?

  • I recently downloaded the latest OS update and now I have a constant "humming" noise from my MBP and my audio output is no longer working. Any suggestions?

I recently downloaded the lastest OS update (Lion X 10.7.4) on my MBP that I purchased in November of 2011, and since downloading it my MBP has been making a constant "humming" noise from the right speaker/disc drive area. I also don't have any audio output for FaceTime or Skype. I attempted to use Photo Booth to record a video and it doesn't record any audio. I attempted to reset SMC and reinstall Lion with no resolution of the problems.

Click the Finder icon on the Dock.

Move the Master volume slider to the right a bit.

  • Noise on audio output when using the power adapter

I'm a musician and use my mid-2007 MBP 15" in my live rig. When I use the power adapter, I hear a buzz, sometimes accompanied by a slightly louder buzz that cycles on & off about 1x/second. There are a few weird things going on here:
    1. The buzz does not happen all the time. That leads me to think it may be noise in the AC line that the adapter is plugged into.
    2. The noise is heard when I use both the built-in audio output AND an external USB audio interface.
In any case, when I disconnect the power adapter and run my MBP on battery, the noise goes away completely. I can probably do this on most gigs, but I'm a little nervous since I run a FW drive, an external USB audio interface, and my midi keyboard (powered by USB) so I am putting a little heavier than usual load on the MBP's battery.
As I said, this may be a noisy AC line. Another guess is that it's the PMU inducing noise into the audio circuitry. I'm hoping a simple AC line filter can help me but I thought I would ask here first in case anyone else has dealt with this. TIA for any help!

I had a similar problem and fixed it with a $5 universal travel adapter. Yours might be different but here's my situation. Try it for little cost and see if it works.
I'm also a muso with an iMac running external KRK speakers via USB Mbox2. Previously I had a Macbook Pro and the same audio problem. I've been putting up with a very low volume, high pitch noise until now. I simply plugged the Mac power cord into a universal travel adapter which then goes into the wall. For Aussie users there is an adapter on ebay that will allow a 3 pin Aussie plug to go into female side and has a two pin Aussie male on the other. For US users you can probably get the same although there is a 59c product that will do the trick called a ground lift adapter. Applecare actually agreed this was the best fix and confirmed there would be no problems with power supply or Mac performance. What a gem ! God knows I've looked into all kinds of alternatives that could have cost hundreds instead of $5.

  • Firewire drive noise appearing in audio output

    Hi:
When I have a firewire drive plugged in, a lot of digital noise appears at the audio output jack. If I turn the drive off, I hear a whining-down noise in the audio output. I've tried two different drives, 3 different cables, same thing. Anyone have any ideas? It's a huge bummer; I bought my MacBook Pro to do music on...

    Hey george,
i know this is not going to be any help, (i need some too!!!) but i have exactly the same problem. I first noticed it when using my ICY BOX external harddrive and thought it was just the noise from the external drive but the same thing happens when i attach my Motu traveler firewire soundcard to it. Its so annoying. the sound dissapears when i take out the mini jack from the output.
I am also having a problem of sound distortion over the output and recording input when i attach my Motu firewire unit
(this is seperate from the minijack problem i think as this happens when the minijack is plugged into the output AND when it is not).
This didnt happen to my powerbook 1.6 and never happens to my friends one either????
I am going to make a seperate thread about this problem now but if you could tell me if you have the same problem with your soundcard i would be grateful.
All the best and if you find out what the problem is please post your solutio up, vice versa.
    Will.

  • Noise when using NVIDIA HDMI output

Trying to use audio over HDMI output on an NVIDIA GTX580, using nvidia 331.38, results in the audio transmitted with a large amount of noise on top of it. I'm not sure quite what is helpful to say here, though. Just using ALSA, no PulseAudio or anything.

    Hello, long shot, but...
Go to System Preferences > Universal Access and down in the Display: section make sure that the Enhance contrast: slider is all the way to left to Normal, or more to the right for less Contrast.

  • Processor noise with audio output?

I attached my Mac book pro to my 40" LCD TV along with an audio output from the headphones out to the input on the TV.
What I noticed is that the "processor whine" that we all complain about that seems to cease when we are running things like photo booth, and intensify when we disconnect the AC adapter, is projected through the audio of my TV!!!!! When I mute the TV, away goes the whine. Strange huh?
I don't know if this is a new revelation, or a known reproduction of the problem.
So my question is, do you think there is a relationship between the poor output on the speakers (very little sound on bars 1 through 7) and this processor whine we complain about?
I was generally happy with my MBP and would ignore the whine until my TV set amplified it.
Do any of you also think that Apple would replace my MBP for this and the many other complaints? (Screen inverter defect, generally hot, and this noise output via cable)
Thanks for your input on my future with this computer, like I said, I've always been happy with it until this output problem.

My guess as to what causes the whine is this:
There are many small copper traces on the motherboard carrying signals. There are two traces in question. One carries the power for the processor in low power mode. One carries the power to the sound card (or from the card to the speakers). Those two traces are too close together. So when power flows through the proc trace it induces electric current in the other trace, which causes the sound we hear from the speaker.
It is a problem of the design of the MLB. So the fix would be to isolate the two traces.
    Just my idea.
