Noise on sound output

I'm just trying out an external drive on my Macbook Pro. I happened to have the internal sound output from the Mac connected at the time and noticed that as soon as I connected the drive to the mains, the output became very noisy: as continuous series of clicks at about 15 Hz. I thought it was the drive, but I think it's some sort of grounding issue as connecting my FW interface led to noise on the internal MAc outputs too (a different type of noise!). It seems to happen with either FW400 or 800.
I have no intention of using the output for anything serious - I was just listening to some CDs whilst wiring up - but is this normal?

I'm also experiencing this issue. I have some external speakers (razer mako) connected to the headphone jack on my 15" Unibody MBP (purchased last month). I get some intermittent line noise. Additional hissing and clicking which seems to correspond to activity on the computer (e.g. external drive connectivity).
There is no line noise connecting to my iPhone or other audio source.

  • Static, Electronic Noise then No Output for 2 or 3 Minutes, Then Music/Sound

LStatic, Electronic Noise then No Output for 2 or 3 Minutes, Then Music/Sound? Hi,
I'm not sure how to really explain this problem; but, I'll give it a shot.
I have a Gateway FX530 system with a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Gamer PCI card installed.
Please note that the problem that I am describing has happened through the life of the computer (2-/2 years).
The problem is that I hear static through both of the powered speakers, followed within seconds by electonic beeping of various tones followed by silence. During this silence no sound/music will play through the sound card/speakers.
If I let the system sit for several minutes the sound returns and I can hear music/audio.
(This problem never happens when I am playing music or other audio, it is always when the system is idle with nothing apparently being processed by the sound card.)
I suspect it is something hardware-related with the sound card; but, before I replace the card I wanted to see if anyone else has similar problems.
Any input will be appreciated. (I have tried replacing drivers in the past with no success.)
    Thanks
    Jeff

Well, I thought it was solved but that App makes my sound lock up about once a day requiring a restart.
There must be a solution to this as I've seen loads of posts on the same subject, mostly relating to MacBooks.
What is clearly happening is that the audio is going to sleep after a period, and when it's waking, the first second or so of the sound gets missed.  Now, when that is system sounds, they get missed completely!
Oh, I should say I've tried KeepSoundAwake as well.
    Anyone?

  • Digital(computer) noise on headphone output jacks

    Hi
I have a dv9000 which has a problem with  digital(computer) noise on headphone output jacks. I hooked  it up to my car
stereo axillary input jack and noticed a lot of static noise, even with laptop sound muted. Only time there is no static, or very minimal  is when I put the laptop in hibernation mode. So I'm pretty sure it's a digital form of noise.
I have a HP DV5T also and it does not have this problem. So is this a common and accepted problem with all older dv9000 series laptops?  Or is there a problem with my dv9000? and if so, what do you think it might be.  I've looked at the dv9000 headphone output on the Oscope and I did indeed see square waveforms mixed in with other random noise.
FYI---When head phone is used, there seems to no noise or is very faint. Do headphones have inherent ability to filter out the digital form of static?
    Thanks
    Tom

i just bought a 4520s pro-book and i'm having the same problem but i DO hear the noise with my headphones. when i plug in my headphones i can hear every time the HD spins or a window opens or closes, and the cd drive is unbearable. this is driving me nuts because i bought this notebook for my music production so i sometimes spend hours with headphones in. i have contacted support with no success. anybody have any ideas?

  • Static on sound output - N95

Does anyone know what can cause static on the sound output from an N95...
I cleaned the speaker grills and it's gone away to an extent but it's still there driving me mad...
    Any suggestions?
    Nokia 5110 => Nokia 3330 => Nokia 3510i (Coffee Damage) ==> Nokia 3510i => Nokia 6600 => Nokia N95 (WITH v21, Finally everything I wanted in a phone!)

Your only option would be to send it in for repair.
Either the small earpiece speaker has developed a problem or else metal dust is stuck there causing the buzzing noise.
Just be very specific that it's the earpiece and not the hands free or the headphones.
Also I seem to remember that sometimes the display may cause noise. But only a repair technician may know for sure.

  • Display freezing, sound output freezing if trackpad not used

    Hi
My display often freezes until i press the power key and click "cancel" in the "restart?" box. It happens less if the power cable is in. Also, the sound output sounds choppy, especially in itunes. I think these things are related, because neither seems to happen if there is some contact with the trackpad (if i'm moving the cursor or even just have my finger resting on it).
Does anyone have any idea why these things would happen? I reset my SMC but nothing seemed to happen.
    Cheers

    Hi,
Sorry, I have no solution - I just want to confirm that I've got the same problem:
    - MBPro freezes, mostly when running on battery. It does not freeze in any particular program or when doing something demanding. It just randomly stops working.
    - And, when recording - while on battery - popping noises occur.
    - And programs crashes constantly. Especially the ones that are in the background.
I bought the computer with extra RAM (3gb instead of 2gb) preinstalled. Could the RAM be the problem?
    Cheers

  • HP ENVY 17 microphone and sound output problems

Hey i have a HP ENVY 17, and i have been having some problems with the microphone, sound outputs and the sound in general. The microphone output haven't been working ever since i got the notebook in November. at first i thought it was problems with the settings, either on the computer or on Skype, which i used for communication. I tried with other Voice Chat programs such as Mumble, Ventrilo and TeamSpeak - neither worked. I got a friend over who knows a little bit about computers, and the only thing he could think of was that the microphone output was non working. I am using Steelseries 7H headset. Now i have to use the integrated microphone which often gives background or typing noise.
Lately i am only hearing sound on the right ear, i have checked my headphones with an iPod, so i know there is nothing wrong with them.
The third problem occurs when i turn the volume over 20% on the computer. It starts to make a background noise, almost like a waterfall, both with headset and without.
Another little problem i have is nothing to do with sound, but since I'm posting this already, i thought i could atleast ask. When i play games the top left side of the computer, right over the fan can get hot while the fan is working on hardmode. If i play really graphic-focused games, like Crysis 2, it gets super hot(i burn my hand if i hold it over the fan). Is this just because it's a laptop and the games demands too much? Or is it dust in the fan or something? And what can i do about it? That last question counts for all the problems
    Thank you on beforehand
    - Kirrod

I still need help, if there are anyone here who thinks they have any kind of solution to my problem. Like; how do i get it repaired? Send it to HP? How long will it take?
Im sorry if my english is not so good, it's my second language. It might be called microphone input, and not output. The place you put in the microphone cable.
    Please help!

  • Suddenly NO SOUND OUTPUT

Out of nowhere suddenly my relatively new iPad Air gets no sound output.
It happened without any preceding fall, trauma, new installation, or prolonged usage or signs for concern.
    Troubleshooting clues so far:
-did not receive sound even when I routed through Bluetooth headphones (thus NOT a hardware issue)
-messed around with sidesswitch settings, accessibility, reset, as advised by some prior Related posts. No change.
-once or thrice when I keep trying to adjust volume and Play various test media, I am getting a LOUD horn about 500 msec approx middle-c pitch. It sounds like a noise you'd expect to come from a 1997 Windows desktop PC.
IPAD air is 16GB wifi only, running iOS 8.0 software auto updated 3 days after I took it out of the box
Has 6.1 GB free space currently.
NOt it sure what else is relevant to include.
NEED SOUND! Useless to me without that

Try a reset - hold the power and home keys down until the Apple logo appears. If that does not help, take it in for testing/diagnosis.

  • Can not change sound output. Help Please

Well, i've been digging all the forums lately in web. my problem is, i can't change my 'system' sound output to my sound card which is Native Instruments Audio8 Dj.
Let me explain my problem decently. I do the usual procedure, system preferences > sound > n then select the output. but nothing happens. it is always set on internal speakers or headphone or whatever plugged in to the *Built-in Output*. I try switching from audio-midi setup n that doesn't work as well. The system perfectly recognizes the sound card, i can get output from sound card with applications which have their own output settings. But i cant change the system output. I have the latest version of soundflower loaded(this might be causing the problem who knows), i used many soundcards before(or maybe even ex-drivers?) n they used to work until i updated to snow leopard. I also tried trashing the files in macintosh hd > library > preferences > audio >>
and those files *did not regenerate* after restart(like 10 times), so i had to copy them from my imac.(hehe). i tried resetting pram or nvram.(didn't do any good too)And also i tried trashing soundpref.plist which didn't do me any good neither. Now i need that sound card to give me my system output. I don't need drivers of any other ex-sound cards or whatever. My drivers are up to date. And im pretty sure this ain't an hardware fail.
    So, any ideas? Thx.

I am having the exact same problem. I have spoken with Apple Care and they are having my case reviewed by "Engineers," apparently. Its very frustrating as I cannot listen to iTunes or any of my video games through my really nice monitor speakers. FYI, I had this problem without installing Sound Flower, since then I have installed it in the hopes that having something different to select it might work but no changes. If I hear any good news from Apple I will be back to let you know. This seems to be a very rare problem as I have only found one other post about this issue.

  • The sound output does not work on my ipod

    Hi There,
I have an Ipod 4 th generation and the sound output no longer works on any device.  I've reset and reinstalled the software but nothing appears to work?
    Any ideas please?
    Serial number: 9C6463XJV9R
    Thanks Chris

If none of the 5 R's helped address the issue, it's likely hardware related.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
As to what exactly is damaged/faulty, no there is no certain way to tell.  It could be the iPod's audio chip or something else on the logic board.
Either way you'll need to have your iPod serviced/replaced either by Apple or a third party company.

    Hi legendary92,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I saw your post regarding the motherboard problems. If the HP service centre has told you that audio port is damaged you will have to replace the motherboard if you want sound. Page 75 of the Maintenance and Service Guide will show you how to replace it. The part number for your motherboard or system board as they are called in notebooks is 683031-501. You can order the part from HP PartsSurfer just search for the part number.

  • Help with sound output via HDMI

My sound output via HDMI suddenly stopped worked to my TV set. I've reset the PRAM and the SMC. When I go to sound control panel for sound output, the setting is on Headphones. When I try to change it to SV420XVT1A (the tv) it immediately jumps back to headphone. I also tried a different HDMI cable to a different HDMI port on the tv. This just started after the Mac Mini had been turned off for a week. I'm using Lion and it's an 8GB Intel Core 2 Duo. Any suggestions?

I actually discovered this answer about 5 minutes after I posted the question. Thanks a lot for your help!! Funny thing is that it had worked all along with something plugged in the headphone jack but suddenly stopped working. Again, thanks!

  • No sound output to TV using Apple dock - video is fine

I'm baffled. I have a new 80GB iPod Classic, a brand new Apple dock, and Apple A/V Component cable. When I watch a video or photo slideshow, everything works great. However, when I want to listen to my iPod's music through my TV's speakers, using the same setup, there is NO sound output to the TV at all. Why would the audio play when watching photos or video, but no sound when all I want is music? Please help!

I haven't personally had this problem, but I believe in order to hear music through your TV speakers, you have to use the headphone port instead of the AV cable.

  • Is there a way to force A Mini to recognize the HDMI as a sound output.

Is there a way to force the Mac mini to recognize the HDMI as a sound output?  I have the HDMI going through a matrix switch and the video works fine but the audio is not recognized.  My Apple TV has no problem with both audio and video through the same set up to a tv.

    Some general checking:
Open System Information found in Applications->Utilities.
On the left side under hardware, click Audio.  In the right
pane, Expand items if necessary to reveal the contents and
see if there is an HDMI listing.  If so, click on it to get additional
    info.
Also, have you connected the Mini directly to the TV?  Narrows down
if it is actually the Mini or just how the Mini is working with the
    switch.
Another possibility is that there is a power up sequencing issue.
Ran into a situation with my Yamaha receiver, Mini, and Samsung TV
that if things were not powered in the right sequence I could only
get two channel audio and sometimes only internal audio.  With my
setup, I needed to power up the TV (waiting for it to come up completely
showing the searching for signal box), power up the Yamaha, then finally
power up the Mini.  Also, after all this, if anything was switched, I would
end up having to reboot the Mini to get audio the way it should be.

  • Sound output channel keeps switching by itself every few seconds

Hey guys, I have this sound output issue with my Macbook pro 2010 September version that every once in a while, the audio output would keep swapping between headphone, digital output and the speakers when NO headphone or digital output or what so ever is actually plugged in. During this time i am unable to adjust sounds, and my menu bar would become very slow to respond (the sound icon and Soundsource application would stop responding during this time). After a while (could be less than 10 minutes or last to about an hour, it varies), it returns back to normal by itself.
I've read many posts on Apple forum about this issue, but i haven't found a suitable solution. Also, I read that for most, when the audio output doesn't work it would usually be a output socket issue that there is a RED light in the socket. But for me, at times it has a RED light, at times, it doesn't, and sometimes the RED light would switch on and off by itself for a couple of times, depending on how long this issue lasts until it returns to its normal state by itself.
    I have tried:
    1. plugging the headphone into the socket and take it out quickly
    2. Downloading Soundsource: i heard that Soundsource has an option of manually adjusting the sound output channel instead of letting the computer switch automatically, but unfortunately I downloaded the latest (2.5) version of the software and it doesn't have that option on my macbook pro.
    3. I also tried Cmd + Opt + P + R
The result however is that none of this worked.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have both and haven't experienced this at all. Very strange. I do get a lot of random channel changes however when I put my iPad on the remote, the cat walks over it or the dog sits on it.
That being said, I don't use the Samsung remote at all for the TV and never have done. I dislike it and find it unresponsive. I use a different remote to change through the available outputs and the Vision remote for Vision and for switching the TV on and off.
