Noise reduction doesn't work?

Hi All,
New user here (testing the demo). I have a moderately loud
air conditioner system, and as a result there is a constant hum.
I'm trying to get the noise reduction to work, but to no avail.
Here's what I do.
I record a clip. then select Edit Timing. Then Adjust Volume.
Then check "Dynamics (boost quiet sections), then I play with the
Noise Threshold and Ratio sliders (primarily Noise Threshold).
These don't seem to do anything, though I *can* adjust the volume
of the clip successfully.
What am I doing wrong here? Thanks!

Hi carloshl
Welcome to the world of Captivate!
Seriously, the audio editing bundled inside Captivate is
always reported as being rather anemic. I compare it to the jack in
the trunk of a new car. Enough to change the tire once in a while,
but if I'm gonna do it more often than that, I should probably
invest in a different tool.
The really super good news here is that your investment need
not be cash! There is a wonderful and totally free audio editor out
there called Audacity. You may download it by
clicking this magickal
link.
Oh, and you should probably also find a quieter room to
record in.
Any possibility of turning off the air for a brief
period?
Cheers... Rick

  • Noise Reduction - Doesn't get quite all the noise

I'm having trouble removing 60Hz hum. I just got Soundtrack Pro after trying Soundtrack that was included in FCE. I didn't have much luck with Soundtrack and the Apple quick tour made noise reduction in ST Pro look like child's play.
I have a friend on the PC and he ran my audio thru Adobe Audition and it did a really good job. I downloaded the 30 day demo and it's Noise Reduction is simple and works well. But, I kind of have a need to complete my entire project on a Mac...
Anyway, I select a portion with just my hum and do 'Set Noise Print'. Then I remove the noise from my enitre clip. I typicall have to move the slider down to -25db. At that point it starts to effect my dialog and there is a small amount of buzz or hum still left around.
How in the world can I fix this? I've been told that my hum may be at 60Hz and at all the harmonics of 60Hz. I can't seem to find a Notch Filter in Pro, where Soundtrack does have one. So, how can I eliminate 60Hz and all the harmonics?
Also, any idea why Adobe Audition does a better job than Soundtrack Pro in this quick NR area? Am I missing something that I should be doing in Soundtrack Pro?
I'm a total audio newbie so any help is appriecaited.

I've had good luck using the EQ editor, where you can adjust various parameters like the spread of the frequency, the amplitude, and also check for other frequencies (try overtones undertones of the main sound).
If you need to cut out so much that it interferes with the quality of your dialogue, you can fool the ear by adding bit of high register to make it more articulate, or middle-low register to make it more resonant.
By saving the presents you create, you can easilty try different combinations.

  • Noise Reduction is not working

I just upgraded from LR 2 to LR 3 and for some reason I'm only able to move the 'luminence'  and 'color' sliders.'  Why aren't the 'detail' and 'contrast' 'sliders' activated?
    Thanks!

In the menus: Settings->Process. Or click the (!) icon in the lower right corner of image area.

  • Noise reduction function built into built into graduated filter and adjustments brush!

Really useful functionality, but maybe the tool name shout be "Noise reduction" rather than "noise" for the graduated filter and adjustments brush.  If I understand it correctly, the way all the sliders work now is that that movement to the left decreases the function of the slider, and to the right increases the function - if that is the case, then by labelling the slider "noise" would suggest that moving to the right is increasing the noise when in fact it is the reverse!

The explanation is that "noise reduction" doesn't fit the available space in all languages.

  • Noise Reduction on slideshow or image export

Hello, does any one know why the Noise Reduction does not work when creating a slideshow or exporting the image ? It simply ignores my noise reduction settings.

Which version of Lightroom are you using.

  • Noise Reduction Export

I used noise reduction on a clip with a fade in, but when I export the noise reduction doesn't kick in for the first second of audio. Does this have something to do with doing a fade in?

I'm having the same problem...in Premiere, when I play through the timeline, the noise reduction is applied very effectively to every clip.  You never hear the background noise.  However, when I export and playback in QuickTime, every time a new audio segment begins in the video, the first few seconds play the original, unaltered audio (with no noise reduction), then suddenly the noise reduction kicks in and audio sounds good.
Here is a export that demonstrates the problem pretty well:  https://vimeo.com/47687525
I'm just now making the switch from Final Cut to Premiere so I don't even know where to start troubleshooting!  Surely this is not the way the noise reduction effect is supposed to function in Premiere...there's got to be a fix without using Audition.
    Any ideas?

  • PV2010 Color Noise Reduction Robs Dark Tones

    No pun intended.
I thought at first it was the raw-conversion/de-mosaicing, but its turned out to be the color noise reduction.
Here is a the latest example of a picture that looks better in PV2003 than PV2010 no matter what I do, because of loss of clarity / contrast / dark-tones resulting from the new Color Noise Reduction algorithm. Note: This loss can not be restored using clarity or contrast sliders.
This probably ought to be a feature request: A slider that controls the coarser aspects of color noise reduction (color waves or clarity/contrast) versus the most localized aspects (color specs). In this instance, just getting rid of the specs without trying to reduce the waves might leave the dark tones(?) - Something like that. In any case, there is room to improve color noise reduction so that it leaves the dark tones / contrast / clarity in certain cases like this.
(Its a 100% crop of a section of a fish under water)
    PV2003:
    PV2010:
The difference is striking when viewing the whole photo from afar...
PS - I just discovered that minimizing noise reduction will maintain the dark tones better - I've therefore added down-throttling of color noise reduction to my PV2003  -> PV2010 practice.

Luminosity Contrast slider also helps maintain some darker tones.
    Indeed it do.
And, last but maybe (or maybe not) least, one can cheat a bit at the end and add some grain, to give the illusion of greater detail / texture. So, if you really want to preserve full detail when converting high ISO shots from PV2003 to PV2010, you need to:
    1. Crank up the luminance noise reduction detail slider pretty darn high (if not all the way up).
    2. Crank up the luminance noise reduction contrast slider pretty darn high (if not all the way up).
    3. Minimize color noise reduction amount.
    4. Crank up the color noise reduction detail slider fairly darn high (not all the way up! - color artefacts - bleh).
    5. Maybe add a touch of grain (pretty darn low).
(I've left out the luminance NR amount slider and sharpening because they are the more obvious ones).
I'm guessing I'm not the first person to fall into the trap of trying to recover detail lost by noise reduction by decreasing luminance noise reduction amount and increasing sharpening detail (and maybe amount too), and winding up right back where you started - too much noise. The detail/contrast sliders of the noise reduction controls really work a lot better for that, and minimizing color noise reduction is also a hot tip for you detail junkies.
I hope I'm not the last person on this forum to realize what is now seeming sort of obvious to me, whilst everyone has a good laugh...
(I had previous just left color noise reduction and detail, plus luminance NR contrast at their defaults (I discovered the importance of the lum.NR detail slider long ago...) - but not anymore. It has helped me to articulate all this - hope it helps somebody else too..........

  • Noise reduction problems LR3.4

I have some problems with the noise reduction.
    1. When watching photos in library mode the noise reduction is not working. Switching to development shows the correct image with nr removed.
    2. When using the brush (reducing exposure on face) on an image the complete NR for this image isn't  working. As soon when the brush is removed everything is fine!!!

    Hi
You can't really do effective and selective (that's what you want) audio editing with FCP filters. But if you HAVE to, you can use the following filters (not sure if they are all in version 4.5):
    Hum remover
    compressor
    equalizer (3band)
Sound editing is an art, and may take a while to get the best filter settings and combination. Good luck.

  • Noise reduction on track1 using noise print from track2

I have an audio track from a video project that was recorded on track1 that has a lot of interference from the wirelss mic that was so strong that it crossed over to the idle track2. Track1 has the voice and interference intermixed. Track2 just has the interference. How can I take a noise print from track2 and use it to reduce the corresponding noise on track1? Any ideas?

In addition, to make the process more challenging, I am unable to get the audio in the edit frame to play at the same gain as in the multi-track frame. In edit mode I seem to be at a 0db gain whereas the multi-track is playing at over 12 to 20db.
I am also unclear how to get the changes back to Final Cut. When I go to File to save it I do not see a Save option that would transfer the edited audio back to the Final Cut Project.
For the additional items you mention:
    1. In your multi-track project, check your volume envelopes on the track, and check the level on your submix and master. To do this, click the the disclosure triangle just left of the track name. You'll see in purple the envelopes section, which is like keyframes in FCP.
    2. You have to export a mix to send it back to FCP. Go to File -> Export, save the master mix with a file name, and most likely as an aiff file, then in the dropdown "After Export" choose "Send to Final Cut Pro Sequence."
For your noise reduction questions - applying noise reduction is for broadband, sustained noise, like an air conditioner or a hum. Are you trying to apply the same noise reduction to several files because they have the same type of background noise? I generally just save my settings, but set a new noise print for each file. I'll give you a quick step by step:
Select a bit in the file where there's JUST noise. Then go to Process -> Noise Reduction -> Set Noise Print. Then select the entire file, and go to Process -> Noise Reduction -> Reduce Noise. When the noise reduction window comes up, you just need to listen and play with the settings until you're satisfied with how it sounds. As a starting point, take a look at the level of the noise alone, and use that as the threshold. Usually 100% noise reduction doesn't sound good, but you just have to use some trial and error. Too much sounds worse than too little, in my opinion. When satisfied, apply it and save the preset.
    Hope this helps!

  • Noise reduction works in preview but doesn't apply to file

I have a file that I would like to apply noise reduction to. So in the tasks menu I click Clean Up Audio, then under Noise I click Noise... From there I can play with the Noise settings and get it to clean up nicely. But when I hit OK, it doesn't apply the noise reduction. It seems to be doing something to the audio because the waveform changes.. just not reducing the noise as previewed. Anybody know why it wouldn't be applying the effect? Other audio editing options seem to work just fine.

It is a 16 bit 44.1 kHz mono sound effect.. it is noisy and sounds like it could have been 8 bit at some point in its life cycle.

Hi, I have just purchased the Photoshop Touch app for iPhone, mainly for the noise reduction feature but the noise reduction in it does not work.  I move the slider and nothing happens.

  • Noise reduction (audio) doesn't seem to work - what am I missing?

    Hi,
In a clip that I'd really like to use, there is a pervasive buzzing hum throughout, especially noticeable in long shots where there isn't any competing or overriding sound.
I've read the instructions in the manual for taking and saving a noise print of the noise itself (there is a perfect segment in the clip to use for this), and for applying it to the entire clip by Selecting All and going to Process>Noise Reduction>Reduce Noise, then applying the saved Preset.  Also watched the video, which gave exactly the same directions.  The Noise Reduction line appears in the Actions tab underneath the clip name, and it looks like it's processed, but when I bring the HUD up and hit the Play button, nothing has been removed.  The offending sound is still there.
If I click on the Noise Only box in the HUD, there is no sound at all, which seems to indicate that Noise Reduction hasn't actually been applied.
I've deleted the file from Finder and started from scratch twice, but still can't get it to work.
Obviously the Noise Reduction can't just "not work" - so as a new user of Soundtrack (3.0.1), what have I not understood?
    Thanks,
    Marg

When you get to Process > Noise Reduction > Reduce Noise, usually a preset isn't the answer, but some manual fiddling.
Here's the way I approach this:
    1. When I set the noise print, I play/loop the clip and note the level of the noise in your meters. When I get to the threshold in the noise reduction window, that level will be the extreme highest threshold I use, only going lower from there.
    2. When it comes to the reduction, I check the Noise only box while I'm setting it, and boost the reduction until I'm getting noise, but not too much signal I want to preserve. If I hear voice in there, I'm doing too much. And I rarely end up going beyond 60%.
    3. Uncheck the noise only box, and listen to the signal with noise reduced to fine tune further.
Remember this is noise reduction, not noise elimination. And, the STP tool is pretty good for what it is, but it's not anywhere near the best out there.
Good luck, and I hope this helps!

  • Spectral Noise Reduction effect doesn't do anything.

This is on the track based effect.
Title says it all.  No matter what settings I apply, I hear absolutely no difference in the audio track.
    Does this work for anybody?

I'm going to make a judgement that Spectral Noise Reduction just doesn't work, then.  It has a pretty interface, that does change colors when you move the parameters around, but I sure can't hear any effect that all that parameter changing is doing anything to the audio.
True, Audition does have pretty decent BBNR, but I'd rather not have to leave Pr when I can avoid it.  The back and forth between the two apps aren't as seamless as many people think.  I'd rather not create new media until after it's processed.

  • Noise reduction not working on Lightroom 5.4 MAC

I have experienced that the noise reduction that I apply to my pictures is only visible in the develop area of the software. As I switch to library it disappear and the same happen if I export the picture in any kind of format.
I post a screenshot where you can see a sample picture with the desired noise reduction applied (on the right) and the same picture as it shows in the library area (on the left). Switching between this two areas (library and develop) results like a noise reduction toggle.

Is there a way to solve this bug?
    Thank you.

Usually Develop-Fit view is crispier than Library or Export, when there has been enough noise-reduction added to an image to make it seem smooth, and people complain that sharpening is not being applied; however, in this situation through extreme noise-reduction settings, an artificial coarse texture has replaced the fine-grained noise which seems to manifest differently in Develop Fit view, and the complaint is that Library has no NR applied.
In more detail, there are two issues, here, both of the user's doing, not LR's:
    1)  A user-expectation that the Develop non-1:1 zoom is accurate regarding Detail settings.  It is not.  For years there has been an exclamation-point warning on the Detail settings section that says to view things only at 1:1.  If a user doesn't see or ignores this warning then their expectation is wrong, as in this situation.
    2)  The Luminance Noise-Reduction Detail slider has been increased from the default of 50 to the maximum of 100.  This has the effect of converting the fine-grain noise into a course angular texture, which is easily visible at reduced sizes except in the inaccurate Develop Fit view.
In the following side-by-side at 1:1 zoom, the lefthand panel is as per the user settings with the Lum-NR-Detail slider set to 100, while the righthand side has the Lum-NR-Detail slider set at the default of 50, with all other user settings remaining the same:
I would summarize what is occurring not as a bug but a different response of the inaccurate Develop-Fit rendering to a different coarseness of noise that is caused by an extreme setting of the Lum-NR-Detail slider.  Since there is no resizing and no sharpening in the Export settings, I don't think the 1/3 bug has anything to do with anything.
It would be nice for the original poster (OP) to describe exactly what is wrong, after knowing that the Develop view is in accurate if not viewed at 1:1.
