Noise Reduction Export

I used noise reduction on a clip with a fade in, but when I export the noise reduction doesn't kick in for the first second of audio. Does this have something to do with doing a fade in?

I'm having the same problem...in Premiere, when I play through the timeline, the noise reduction is applied very effectively to every clip.  You never hear the background noise.  However, when I export and playback in QuickTime, every time a new audio segment begins in the video, the first few seconds play the original, unaltered audio (with no noise reduction), then suddenly the noise reduction kicks in and audio sounds good.
Here is a export that demonstrates the problem pretty well:  https://vimeo.com/47687525
I'm just now making the switch from Final Cut to Premiere so I don't even know where to start troubleshooting!  Surely this is not the way the noise reduction effect is supposed to function in Premiere...there's got to be a fix without using Audition.
Any ideas?

    Torsten,
Here's my favourite workaround. You could have done it too, and it's a simple, one-step solution:
Don't pay for software without thoroughly testing it yourself first.
If you've paid for Lr 5 before destruction-testing it and keeping a close eye on the forum (where this issue has been know about for ages), you've only yourself to blame.
Adobe will fix it when they're ready and able to: but it doesn't affect me in any "I paid for this, I expect it to work" way, because I won't be buying Lr 5 until it is fixed.
A really, really, really simple, inexpensive, trouble-free way to deal with all that stress...

  • Exporting JPEG = loosing Noise reduction and sharpening, poor quality compare to RAW

    Hi guys,
I bought LR 5.0 not even a month ago and I was so excited to use it.
Now that I am done working on my projects I exported them as JPEG into my hard drive. This is a disaster. My pictures are amazing in my lightroom as RAW now you should see what they look like in JPEG. I can't believe it. I obviously did something wrong but I can't figure what it is. My JPEG pictures looks extremely grainy. I did shoot at a High ISO for most of them. It is probably the real problem here but there's certainly a way to make it work in JPEG since it looks good in RAW. Please tell me what to do from there. How can I keep the same quality in JPEG than I already have in RAW? I choose JPEG - quality 80% or 100% (tried both) - sRGB. Should I resize the image too?

Are you applying export sharpening, which would exacerbate any remaining noise-grain?  Are you judging the sharpening and noise-reduction at 100% 1:1 zoom?  You have to, otherwise, the resampling-for-display algorithms in LR and your OS viewer might be doing something completely different.

  • "noise reduction" not applied to exported photos

I've always used iPhoto to slightly modify my photos, before exporting and sharing or uploading to Flickr.
But, since yesterday, the exported photos do not include my "Reduce Noise" modifications. When I export them, they include the color, retouch and so on, but they look as they were BEFORE I applied the "Reduce Noise" filter.
When I look at them in the browser, they appear WITHOUT noise reduction.
When I press space to see them zoomed, they appear WITHOUT noise reduction.
When I double-clic to switch to edit mode, they appear WITH noise reduction.
And when I export them (either by dragging and dropping to the desktop or an application, using the export function or opening in an external editor), they appear WITHOUT noise reduction.
I have tried to delete the preferences of iPhoto, but the behaviour of iPhoto remains the same.
This applies to all the photos I've tried it onto. And this never happened before yesterday.
I didn't install anything new, I have no plug-ins or things like that. I've repaired the permissions, even restarted and zapped the PRAM. The only thing I've done recently is install Aperture with the 30 days trial offer. Could this be the origin of the problem?
iPhoto is an important tool for me and has always worked perfectly. I hope someone will help me solve what is a big problem for me.

I sent to the trash the iPhoto preferences I could find and launched it again
This time, I got the same behaviour, but also got console messages, as follows:

  • Noise reduction lost during export?

    Hi everybody
I'm having a very strange issue in the last few days. I work on a picture and when I export it the noise reduction is gone in the generated jpg.
Please have a look at the screenshot... the image on the right is the image I see in lightroom... the one on the left is the jpg exported.
I'd glad is some could explain why is this. I shoot with a Sony a7.
    Thanks.

There is nothing for Adobe to fix.  They are not going to do a full export computation every time you tweak any slider—that would take seconds per slider move and there’d be a lot more complaints about how slow LR is than there are about people who wish LR was magic.
You’ll have to learn how to sharpen in LR, rather than assuming a Fit view is how things would look when exported at an arbitrary size.
Laura Shoe has a good review about the three phases of sharpening:  Capture Sharpening, Creative Sharpening and Output Sharpening, where what you’re doing in Develop is only phase 1:

  • Export of noise reduction does not look like Develop preview

    Hi,
I have a photo that has noise reduction applied, however, after export, it looks as if NO noise reduction has been applied.  Other photos look like they have the noise reduction applied.  Not sure why this one would refuse to export the noise reduction filter.  In the Develop preview, it looks great, no noise. After export, noise.
Different but possibly related, On all photos, I noticed that the noise reduction preview in Develop doesn't update unless I zoom-in/zoom-out, then it updates it. But if I make any adjustments to the slider it doesn't update until I zoom-in/zoom-out again.  This seems like a bug.

    TO recreate the problem
    1. import the CR2 into LR3.3
    2. In the Develop Module  change Noise Reduction Luminance and Detail to 100
    3. In the Library Module export to Hard Drive with 100% Quality no Sharpening
    4. View the JPG and compare to the LR3 views...
The two are virtually the same, as far as I can tell.
It looks like the 1:1 issue in Develop view biting me again... If you view the image in develop view in less thatn 1:1 it looks great.
Man the 1:1 view issue is annoying!   I want the image to look the way it does in Fit/Fill mode....     Is there a way to do this?

Dark areas have less bits to encode their values so a single bit of noise is a higher proportion of the total value.
For the basis of the default processing, to match the human eye’s response to dark and light, darker areas are brightened more than bright areas, using a non-linear gamma curve.  This magnifies the noise in darker areas.
If you boost the brightness of dark areas using Shadows or Clarity, you are making that noise even more visible.   Think of brightening as digitally increasing the ISO.
Adobe’s noise-reduction is calibrated to the original photo’s ISO setting, not how much you have digitally increased the ISO by brightening it, so if you have magnified the noise by extreme processing, you may be beyond what maxing out the NR sliders are calibrated to remove.
Exporting sharpening will sharpen any remaining noise.
Are you using the Mask slider in sharpen to keep from sharpening the noise grain in the Detail section?  Use the Alt key while moving the mask slider to determine the optimal Mask level for a particular photo, where you can’t to have the edges indicated but not the wide areas of little detail.
It’s hard to guess what you’re seeing without seeing a screenshot.

  • Picture has noise after export to JPEG

    Hey guys,
I am using Lightroom 5.2 64bit version on my windows. After I export my raw in to the jpeg it has noise. But in the develop module it hasn´t. Also it has got a little bit noise in the library, but it´s the same picture. Where is the sense?
Here are some pictures of that problem:
    1. The finally edited raw picture which I want to export.
    2. The view from the library, you can see a little bit difference on the quality compared to the view from the develop module.
    3. The jpeg after the export.
    4. My export settings.
I don´t know what to do! I´ve googled a lot but nothing found.
Please help me and post any ideas.
    Lovely regards
    iAmAzInG

I have the same problem (OS X). Exporting to jpeg results in poor quality. This is a problem I didn't had with previous versions.
I took a look at the other threads which are mentioned here and effectively, the 1:1 view looks exactly like the jpeg export.
But this would be like looking at a 5x6 meter poster from two inches distance, which makes no sense. If you look from a 1 meter distance,
it is logic that you will see a bit less noise, things will look smoother.
This really is an issue. I always had an export and a print that looked exactly like how I saw it in 'fit' view in develop screen in previous versions.
It is completely stupid to be obliged to work in 1:1 mode for developing photos as this is the only option from what I read.
The image ont the left is a screenshot (apple+shift+4) from a jpeg export, 72 dpi, 1288px large side.
The image on the right is a screenshot (apple+shift+4) from a screenshot (apple+shift+4) from de the dev screen in LR, 'fit' view mode, 72dpi 1288px large side.
Both have a different size here because I didn't draw the same sized rectangles when taking the screen shot.
As you can see, there is a lot of noise that I don't see in the dev screen. The screenshot on the right is almost exactly what I see, except that it is a bit less sharper
due to jpeg compression, but it still is a better result than the compression of Lr itself. Should I process like this now instead of using export????
I loose sharpness but it has an overall neater look. The jpeg export is really crappy!
I did used a tiny bit of noise reduction and sharpening (23 - 22 respectively) and this has been shot at ISO 800, 5D miii.
The crop applied in Lr is maybe 8-10% so really not much. I avoid cropping as much as possible.
I updated to 5.3 and issue is resolved for me

  • How do I permanently disable Detail (sharpening / noise reduction)?

I did this a while ago with the LR3 beta, but I forgot how I did it.
Anyway, I want to disable Detail (sharpening and noise reduction) in the right hand panel forever, so that when I import new pictures, it's disabled by default when I start developing them (so I don't have to disable it manually for each picture, which is very annoying). The reason is, I handle sharpening & n.r. as a separate step outside of LR (export as TIFF and then n.r. and sharpen).
Any hints please? I know it's simple, I just can't remember it.
    Thanks.

first select an image, then drag the Sharpening Amount and Noise slider to zero, next choose Set Default Settings from the Develop menu. When dialog opens hit the Update to Current Settings button. If you have photos from more than one camera model you'll need to repeat process for each camera. The following tutorial should might also be worth reading http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_camera/lr2-camera-defaults.htm

  • Noise on export

New development engine is really great, but there is an issue which did exist in LR3 and got much stronger in LR4 beta, Very often the image visible in Develop module looks much better noise wise than the one which is exported out. Take a look at the example below: the top half is a fragment from the exported image and the bottom one is a screen shot from LR4. It takes a few trial and fail attempts to get the export image right and when it is right the one in LR4 looks much darker than needed.

But multiple people have found out that sRGB and AdobeRGB soft proofing look exactly like the ProPhoto RGB image in the develop view on a wide gamut monitor. The histogram and the gamut warnings seem to be OK though. But the actual output is bogus.
Here is the original thread for reference:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4129113#4129113
This is only for softproofing though and not for export. Export to sRGB works fine AFAICT. Getting back to the orginal issue, my guess is that Peter is looking at the im age in Develop in Fit or in Fill. You cannot judge the actual noise reduction applied there. You have to be zoomed in to 1:1 to see it correctly. The basic reason is that a different scaling algorithm is used for the Fit/Fill display than you get upon export. This is done to make Lightroom's develop module not even slower than it already is as the only way ot do the preview zoomed out reliably is to render the entire image and then scale down. Since noody wants to wait 5-10 seconds after updting a single slider, the Develop preview in Fit/Fill is rendered from a subsampled subset of the data. At higher zoom all the data is used but only for the area you are looking at. This causes that you should judge noise and sharpening only at 1:1 or higher.

  • DV export problems with grid line noise on export

On exporting in Premier Pro CC I am seeing faint grid lines across the whole picture that are not in the project timeline or the source clips - in other words looks fine in the project but not when exported out. Looks a bit like moire pattern but much more regular dotted box pattern about 5-10 pixel regular box size across whole image in grid - very odd. The noise pattern is not on the source or from camera chip I don't think - although that's what it looks like when sharpness is too hard on camera settings or chip structure bleeds through.
Have been using sharp filter and preset colour balances but as I say look OK in timeline but not after export. Tried using with and without high quality render  - no difference.
I am using DV25 as the export format and I am working on a high end Mac Pro with the latest version of CC.
Very frustrating issue as ruins quality of output - any thoughts gratefully received!

    Hi Jim,
I have viewed in Quicktime 10 and in Final Cut 7 (where I sometimes go back to to use the Neat Video plug-in for noise reduction)

  • Photos with noise reduction filters applied shows too much noise in preview mode

The Noise Reduction filters do an impressive job in Lightroom, but the preview of photos when zoomed out is sometimes poor.
This becomes especially visible on photos with a high amount of noise reduction applied.
When zooming in to 1:1 I see that the noise reduction works as it should. Also when exporting the images the noise is removed as it should.
I wish the non-zoomed preview inside Lightroom was able to show the image with the noise reduction applied more correctly than in version 3.4.
    I'm using Lightroom 3.4 64-bit in Windows 7.
See samples of image with heavy noise reduction applied in 1:1 screen shot, and then a unzoomed screen shot of the same part of the image. As you can see the unzoomed preview contains much more noise than the zoomed image does.

I've had to encode with no noise reduction which is a shame, but have to get this DVD done.
Any ideas for the next one?
    Thanks
    Mark

  • Video noise in exported blu-ray

Hi - I don't know where to start with this one. I exported a project from PPro to Encore for menus, etc, and built a blu-ray ISO image. So far, so good. I burn a BD-R from that image using imgburn, then I took the disc upstairs to watch it on the big screen, and YUCK!
Before I go on, here's the details:
    Win 7 Pro SP1
    Core i5
    8GB memory
    200 PATA for OS, programs,
    500GB SATA for media
    500GB for scratch disc, etc
    1TB e-sata for backups
    Production Premium CS5.5
    PPro 5.5.2
i have CS6 waiting, but I want to finish this project before installing CS6.
~2 hour film of a stage musical production, plus a bit of behind-the-scenes/backstage stuff
    Footage from 2 x Sony Z1P cams (1440x1080 1.33 HDV), and 1 x Canon XF300 (1920x1080 1.0 - I think it uses XDCAM)
Due to the nature of the stage lighting, i.e. lots of deep colours, this footage needed a great deal of colour correction and frequently needed big boosts to brightness. I mainly used the RGB colour corrector, as it was easy to boost or reduce the red, blue and/or green gain to get a reasonable result. I was mostly trying to return skin tones to something resembling human, and leave the rest of the colours alone. Sometimes I needed to use "Change to colour" because the lighting crew used a different colour backdrop from one night to the next
I used brightness and contrast adjustments to start, and played around with gamma and overall gain to fine tune the brightness. Also had the reference monitor on display - mostly RGB but also YC waveform.
Anyway, playback in PPro looked OK, I thought it was as good as it was going to get, so I added chapter markers, exported to Encore, built the menus, FINALLY got a clean bill of health from "Check project", built a blu-ray ISO image on the hard drive, then burnt a BD-R for testing.
Took it upstairs to the lounge room (where the blu-ray player, big screen and audio systems live), loaded and started to play. The menus look and work OK (buttons, scene selections, etc). Here's the strange parts:
    1. the footage from the Canon and ONLY the Canon, appears to have had a lot of noise ADDED (video noise, not audio). This was the first time I used this camera, and I noted that when light levels got really low, the auto gain control kicked in, but it also got very noisy, so I had to decide to limit the AGC, take underexposed footage and "fix it in post". Now it looks OK on my monitor (ASUS 24" 1920x1080), only a little bit of noise that I can put up with but when played back on the blu-ray player and big screen, it looks ridiculous.
    2. some footage from one of the Sony cams is way over-bright - that's something that I can easily correct.
I matched brightnes and colour from the 3 cameras as best I could, and it looks OK in PPro on the program monitor, but looks awful when exported and played via the blu-ray player to the big screen. I put the same disc in the blu-ray drive on my computer and watched the film on my monitor, and it looks OK. I mounted the ISO as a disc, and watched that with VLC, and it looks OK.
I took one section of "noisy" video, approx 60 seconds, and exported it 3 times, playing around with bit rates and noise reduction settings. The uncorrected export was very noisy, and each of the 2 "corrected" versions are improvements, but all of them are very noisy compared to the same footage previewed in PPro.
The export setting "use previews" was unchecked, so presumably it re-rendered everything for the build.
Where should I look to identify the place where the video noise is being added or exacerbated? It's ONLY on the Canon footage, so could it be a codec issue? I started to play with the footage in After Effects, but I haven't had a lot of experience with AE yet.
    cheers

Have you calibrated the HD system in your lounge with something like
Amazon.com: Spears & Munsil High-Definition Benchmark Blu-ray Disc Edition [Blu-ray]: Stacey Spears, Don Munsil: Movies & TV
    or
Amazon.com: Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics [Blu-ray]: Joe Kane: Movies & TV?
If not, then do that before making any judgments.  I personally like the Spears & Munsil disc.

  • Noise reduction visible only in Develop area.

My Lightroom 5.4 for mac has a bug in noise reduction. The noise reduction is visible only in the develop area, and while switching to library it disappear. This affects also exported files and published files like flicker's one. I work with raw files taken with my nikon D5100. Is there any way to fix this bug?

Are you viewing these at 1:1 / 100% Zoom or smaller?  Can we see screenshots of what you’re seeing at 1:1 zoom?  Are you apply Export sharpening?  Are you resizing smaller?  Flickr does add its own sharpening, I believe.
