"noise reduction" not applied to exported photos

I've always used iPhoto to slightly modify my photos, before exporting and sharing or uploading to Flickr.
But, since yesterday, the exported photos do not include my "Reduce Noise" modifications. When I export them, they include the color, retouch and so on, but they look as they were BEFORE I applied the "Reduce Noise" filter.
When I look at them in the browser, they appear WITHOUT noise reduction.
When I press space to see them zoomed, they appear WITHOUT noise reduction.
When I double-clic to switch to edit mode, they appear WITH noise reduction.
And when I export them (either by dragging and dropping to the desktop or an application, using the export function or opening in an external editor), they appear WITHOUT noise reduction.
I have tried to delete the preferences of iPhoto, but the behaviour of iPhoto remains the same.
This applies to all the photos I've tried it onto. And this never happened before yesterday.
I didn't install anything new, I have no plug-ins or things like that. I've repaired the permissions, even restarted and zapped the PRAM. The only thing I've done recently is install Aperture with the 30 days trial offer. Could this be the origin of the problem?
iPhoto is an important tool for me and has always worked perfectly. I hope someone will help me solve what is a big problem for me.

I sent to the trash the iPhoto preferences I could find and launched it again
This time, I got the same behaviour, but also got console messages, as follows:

  • Noise reduction not applying to beginning of clip

There's a bug in Premiere Pro which results in the hiss reduction or certain audio effects not being applied to the first 2-3 seconds of audio when exporting.
After looking this up on the Adobe forums I found other people with the same issue, and they were advised to edit the audio in Audition and reimport into Premiere Pro. I am having the same problem in Audition however.
I capture my noise profile, apply the adaptive noise reduction (or dehiss or whatever) and the audio sounds fine in the program. But when I export the first 2-3 seconds have the original hiss and you can then hear the effect kick in.
Can anyone help?! I offered to start doing video for my work and this is driving me up the wall.

Adaptive Noise Reduction is just that - adaptive.  It identifies sources of dynamic noise over time, then reduces them.
If your clips don't have a few seconds before the in-point with which to apply the algorithm, you can often just copy/paste a few seconds at the beginning of your recording, run the effect, then delete that section.  Dropping a marker after you paste the selection (while it's still selected) will make it simple to select that range again for deletion.
Otherwise, you might want to try the more manual NR tools.  You'll have more control over what's identified as noise and how drastically it's reduced, and can make several light passes for better results.

Since installing Maverick, speed has slowed down considerably. Not able to export photos form email to iphoto. What is going on?

    When did you install?
Spotlight will need to re-index the entire system so that can cause slow performance if you updated recently. It can take many hours on a large disk with a lot of data. Click the Spotlight menu, it should say if it is still indexing.
There is no point trying to fix anything whilst this is ongoing, because it may just speed up when complete.
Are you able to drag photos from email to the Desktop or to iPhoto's icon? How about the 'File menu > Save attachments' option?
Please clarify what you have tried, otherwise we may waste time on the wrong thing.
If the system is generally unstable there are other things to try too, such as safe boot.

That will isolate all third party software, if the Mac is able to do the things that didn't work it suggests that you have software that is loading at startup or login. The easiest way for us to see these is if you download EtreCheck & generate a report.
Post the report here & we can try pointing to items that you can either update or remove.

  • Photos with noise reduction filters applied shows too much noise in preview mode

The Noise Reduction filters do an impressive job in Lightroom, but the preview of photos when zoomed out is sometimes poor.
This becomes especially visible on photos with a high amount of noise reduction applied.
When zooming in to 1:1 I see that the noise reduction works as it should. Also when exporting the images the noise is removed as it should.
I wish the non-zoomed preview inside Lightroom was able to show the image with the noise reduction applied more correctly than in version 3.4.
    I'm using Lightroom 3.4 64-bit in Windows 7.
See samples of image with heavy noise reduction applied in 1:1 screen shot, and then a unzoomed screen shot of the same part of the image. As you can see the unzoomed preview contains much more noise than the zoomed image does.

I've had to encode with no noise reduction which is a shame, but have to get this DVD done.
Any ideas for the next one?
    Thanks

  • Noise reduction not working on Lightroom 5.4 MAC

I have experienced that the noise reduction that I apply to my pictures is only visible in the develop area of the software. As I switch to library it disappear and the same happen if I export the picture in any kind of format.
I post a screenshot where you can see a sample picture with the desired noise reduction applied (on the right) and the same picture as it shows in the library area (on the left). Switching between this two areas (library and develop) results like a noise reduction toggle.
    Dropbox - example.tiff
Is there a way to solve this bug?
    Thank you.

Usually Develop-Fit view is crispier than Library or Export, when there has been enough noise-reduction added to an image to make it seem smooth, and people complain that sharpening is not being applied; however, in this situation through extreme noise-reduction settings, an artificial coarse texture has replaced the fine-grained noise which seems to manifest differently in Develop Fit view, and the complaint is that Library has no NR applied.
In more detail, there are two issues, here, both of the user's doing, not LR's:
    1)  A user-expectation that the Develop non-1:1 zoom is accurate regarding Detail settings.  It is not.  For years there has been an exclamation-point warning on the Detail settings section that says to view things only at 1:1.  If a user doesn't see or ignores this warning then their expectation is wrong, as in this situation.
    2)  The Luminance Noise-Reduction Detail slider has been increased from the default of 50 to the maximum of 100.  This has the effect of converting the fine-grain noise into a course angular texture, which is easily visible at reduced sizes except in the inaccurate Develop Fit view.
In the following side-by-side at 1:1 zoom, the lefthand panel is as per the user settings with the Lum-NR-Detail slider set to 100, while the righthand side has the Lum-NR-Detail slider set at the default of 50, with all other user settings remaining the same:
I would summarize what is occurring not as a bug but a different response of the inaccurate Develop-Fit rendering to a different coarseness of noise that is caused by an extreme setting of the Lum-NR-Detail slider.  Since there is no resizing and no sharpening in the Export settings, I don't think the 1/3 bug has anything to do with anything.
It would be nice for the original poster (OP) to describe exactly what is wrong, after knowing that the Develop view is in accurate if not viewed at 1:1.

  • Noise reduction not showing in develop module

I have noticed today that when I am reducing the noise in the develop module, the changes are not being represented on the image I am working with, except in the top left hand corner... too small for me to see clearly.  But when I switch to Library module, the changes have indeed taken place.  Has anyone experienced this?  I need a fix because it's a bad guessing game adjusting my slider without seeing results until I switch modules.  Haven't had this problem before.   A lot of my work is turning out tooooo smooth!!  I appreciate any help I can get with this.

Without question noise reduction and sharpening should only be adjusted at 100% view magnification. Hopefully the OP understands why now.
I tried viewing both 21Mp and 6Mp RAW images at 'Fit' magnification in the Develop module on my office system:
    Vista Home Premium SP2 64bit
    Lightroom 3.4.1
    1280 x 1024 Monitor (Calibrated with i1 Display 2)
The 'Fit' size image on my 1,280 x1024 display with side panels up is 650 x 430. I increased the side panels for a 400 x 266 picture size, and tried it with side panels off for a 1,000 x 666 picture size – Noise reduction and sharpening is clearly applied in the Develop module for all of three view magnification sizes!
I would be interested for others to try this and report what they are seeing. I used a High ISO 128,000 RAW image so I could easily see the affect of noise reduction and sharpening controls at the 'Fit' magnification. If you don't see any change, try moving the Sharpening Amount and Luminance controls to 100 and then down to 0.
Note to the OP – Regardless of what you are seeing at 'Fit' view size, only adjust Sharpening and Noise Reduction at 100%. I'm just suggesting that you may in fact have a problem with your system. What Camera and file type are you using, LR version, operating system, and monitor(s)?

  • Blur effect not applied when exported to swf ?????

    hello,
I have added a fast blur effect to a portion of my video project in AE, it looks great in AE.
but when I export it out to a swf, the blur effect is not applied, why??????
    thank you

See "Render and export a composition as a SWF file" for a description of what is supported and what isn't for SWF export.
You can choose to either ignore or rasterize unsupported items. It seems that you probably have the Ignore setting selected.

  • Noise Reduction wont apply to track

I am having a rather difficult time getting a audio track i have sent from FCP to play nicely in soundtrack. I sent the audio file from FCP as a audio file project, it opens up, i set my noise print, and adjust the reduction accordingly. Then once i try to apply the effect it will act as if the reduction action was applied but it doesn't actually apply to the track. I did select the area i wanted it to affect and i get nothing. I tried to save the reduction as a Script and apply it to the track in FCP and i end up with the same result. The part that is confusing me the most is if i select the Reduce Noise from the action list and play the track through the reduction hud it plays correctly it just wont apply to the track. Any help would be very much appreciated.
I am running SoundTrack 2.0.2 and Final Cut Pro 6.0.5

Hmm, this might sound obvious, but did you "Save" the audio file project after applying the noise reduction filter? You have to save the project before it will update in FCP. Also, after you apply the filter to the file, the noise reduction should show up in the actions list, before you save and flatten the project.

  • Hard Drives Not Found When Exporting Photos

I'm running 64 bit Lightroom 3.5 on Windows 7.  I've been using Lightroom for about 2 years, this is a problem that just came up this weekend.
When in the Develop module and selecting Export and selecting Export Location and a folder to export to, the dialog box now only shows me the Desktop and my User folder - it does not show either of the two hard disks in my PC.  These disks do show up in Windows Explorer and the Library module is able to find these disks and load the photos on them.
Can anyone offer a tip on what went wrong and how to fix this?  Thanks.

This is a know problem when there are too many objects on the desktop. See here for solutions.

  • Adding filters or adjustments to an image of noise does not apply (some do work???)

    Steps to reproduce
    open new image
    add noise
now try to add unsharpen mask or curves (there are other that dont apply as well but.....)
you can see the effects in preview
click OK and the changes do not apply

Mylenium is right, though actually they're applied correctly, they're just not SEEN correctly in the preview.  If you look at the data closely you'll see that your effects indeed are applied to the document, but maybe not as aggressively as they appeared on the document preview in Photoshop.
This is because the preview display is optimized for speed and the effects are applied to the zoomed-out preview as closely as possible.  Not all effects can be scaled perfectly using fractional numbers.
In short, Adobe figures you'd rather see a facsimile of the effect quickly than wait ages to see it rendered perfectly.
However, if you'd really, really like to see it rendered accurately, and don't mind waiting (and some possibility of destabilization), you can change the Cache Levels to 1 in your Performance preferences then restart Photoshop.  With that setting, all effects are composited at 100% original size then the result is resampled for display on your screen.  If you try this, you'll find it can get pretty sluggish.

  • Changes are not applied when exporting to plugin

When I make changes to an image in Aperture (e.g. white balance) and then go to an editing plugin (Viveza, Dodge and burn,…) Aperture hands over the unedited file to the plugin. Can I change this beahiour or force Aperture to apply edits before editing with a plugin?

    David,
This isn't normal behaviour at all. Are you sure you have the edited file selected when you choose to export to a plugin? For instance if Aperture is set to create a new version with each edit it'll create a stack containing all versions - if you then chose the stack when you export you could be selecting a pick that doesn't reflect your latest edits...
This is all I can think of at the moment. I've never seen that bug before. Aperture bakes in all of a selection's edits to either a tiff or psd file when choosing any plugin. You can't select to do otherwise.
There are exceptions with external applications when doing multiple passes, but that's an entirely different problem.

  • Noise Reduction Export

I used noise reduction on a clip with a fade in, but when I export the noise reduction doesn't kick in for the first second of audio. Does this have something to do with doing a fade in?

I'm having the same problem...in Premiere, when I play through the timeline, the noise reduction is applied very effectively to every clip.  You never hear the background noise.  However, when I export and playback in QuickTime, every time a new audio segment begins in the video, the first few seconds play the original, unaltered audio (with no noise reduction), then suddenly the noise reduction kicks in and audio sounds good.
Here is a export that demonstrates the problem pretty well:  https://vimeo.com/47687525
I'm just now making the switch from Final Cut to Premiere so I don't even know where to start troubleshooting!  Surely this is not the way the noise reduction effect is supposed to function in Premiere...there's got to be a fix without using Audition.
    Any ideas?

  • Lightroom 3.6 DNG and Noise Reduction Problem

    Hello,
I did a search and couldn't find this issue listed. I convert my Nikon D90 raw files to DNG. Never seem to have a problem with that except that the display(s) seldom shows the results of applying Noise Reduction (Color or Luminance). If my display is at Fit or Fill I don't see the results of what I am doing. If I zoom in to 1:1 or more, then I can see the results. All works fine if I am using a jpg file, it is just the DNG files that do this. If I want to see the entire picture with Noise Reduction applied I have to switch to the Library Module. Then when I go back to the Develop module the main display goes back to not showing the Noise Reduction, but the secondary display is ok until I apply another effect then boom, back to Noise Reduction not displaying. All of the other changes I make work just fine. It is just the Noise Reduction that causes the problem. This is really a killer when I am working on photos. This problem existsed before 3.6. Does anyone else have this problem? FYI - When I switch to the Library Module it takes a few seconds before the secondary display shows the photo with the Noise Reduction applied.
I have a quad core 2.4ghz with 8gig of ram and Windows 7 Pro 64bit OS. Plenty of CPU and memory available.
    Thanks,
    Harold

LR is designed this way to improve speed.  I think it varies, somewhat, with how high the ISO is where higher ISOs show NR more.
I find this annoying, too, and which there was a setting to allow LR to compute the NR at lower resolutions if one chooses, instead of Adobe choosing things for us.

  • Recovery connected to noise reduction rendering

Just noticed when I crank the recovery slider up (ACR 4.4 Profile), Lightroom stops rendering fit view with color noise reduction applied when I get to 55 in the develop module. i.e. at recovery of 55 and greater, no color noise reduction is applied, 54 and below, color noise reduction is applied.
Not sure what to say about it - just an interesting observation for the hyper-inquisitive...
    R

Yeah, it does tend to dull a photo, however with ACR 4.4 (a linear profile) it can be cranked all the way to 100 without screwing up the hues, and I often crank it all the way up as a test and then lower to taste... - that's when I noticed the unexpected connection with the color noise reduction.
PS - I sometimes use recovery to recover highlights (and dim the light tones as side effect), then use the tone curve to brighten the light tones back up.
    Summary:
    - With ACR 4.4, I feel free to use recovery 0-100 - often in conjunction with the tone curve to compensate for side-effect repression of non-highlight tones. With non-linear profiles, I strive for highlight-recovery=0 in most photos, due to unfavorable hue shifting.
    - For some reason, Highlight Recovery amount is affecting Lightroom's decision about whether to render color NR in the fit view.
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Noise reduction on track1 using noise print from track2

I have an audio track from a video project that was recorded on track1 that has a lot of interference from the wirelss mic that was so strong that it crossed over to the idle track2. Track1 has the voice and interference intermixed. Track2 just has the interference. How can I take a noise print from track2 and use it to reduce the corresponding noise on track1? Any ideas?

    Bristol87 wrote:
In addition, to make the process more challenging, I am unable to get the audio in the edit frame to play at the same gain as in the multi-track frame. In edit mode I seem to be at a 0db gain whereas the multi-track is playing at over 12 to 20db.
I am also unclear how to get the changes back to Final Cut. When I go to File to save it I do not see a Save option that would transfer the edited audio back to the Final Cut Project.
For the additional items you mention:
    1. In your multi-track project, check your volume envelopes on the track, and check the level on your submix and master. To do this, click the the disclosure triangle just left of the track name. You'll see in purple the envelopes section, which is like keyframes in FCP.
    2. You have to export a mix to send it back to FCP. Go to File -> Export, save the master mix with a file name, and most likely as an aiff file, then in the dropdown "After Export" choose "Send to Final Cut Pro Sequence."
For your noise reduction questions - applying noise reduction is for broadband, sustained noise, like an air conditioner or a hum. Are you trying to apply the same noise reduction to several files because they have the same type of background noise? I generally just save my settings, but set a new noise print for each file. I'll give you a quick step by step:
Select a bit in the file where there's JUST noise. Then go to Process -> Noise Reduction -> Set Noise Print. Then select the entire file, and go to Process -> Noise Reduction -> Reduce Noise. When the noise reduction window comes up, you just need to listen and play with the settings until you're satisfied with how it sounds. As a starting point, take a look at the level of the noise alone, and use that as the threshold. Usually 100% noise reduction doesn't sound good, but you just have to use some trial and error. Too much sounds worse than too little, in my opinion. When satisfied, apply it and save the preset.
    Hope this helps!
    Matthew
