Noise Reduction process in Audition

I have a talking head video with a lot of background noise.
I first selected both audio and video tracks and right-clicked to Unlink them.
Then I selected the audio track and right-clicked to Edit in Auditon.
In Audition > Effects menu > Noise Reduction > Noise Reduction process, I hit the Capture Noise Print button, but an error message comes up stating my clip is too short.
When I follow the instructions and change the FFT to the smallest size option (512), it still doesn't work.  I have tried strining a few short background noise clips together, but it doesn't work.
Questions:
1) How long does a backgroung noise clip have to be?
2) What does FFT stand for, and why are the number options in that dropdown menu as they are?
3) How can I get this to work?

The step that appears to be missing here is that you haven't highlighted the section that you want to capture the noise print from - if you select nothing, then yes, your selection is too short!
Questions:
1) How long does a backgroung noise clip have to be?
2) What does FFT stand for, and why are the number options in that dropdown menu as they are?
3) How can I get this to work?
1) You can get away with as little as a quarter of a second, depending on the FFT size. If you use a large FFT size, the analysis window won't be large enough.
2) FFT stands for Fast Fourier Transform. In this context, the numbers relate (in simple terms) to an analysis window. Smaller numbers generally make a better job of low frequency noise reduction, and are quicker to apply, but larger numbers generally do a better job overall, if you have a large enough noise sample and don't mind waiting longer for the results. This isn't a precise science; you often have to experiment a lot to get a good result, and it's very easy to overdo it. In CS6 there are alternatives as well - you might try the automatic adaptive NR process successfully on some material, but generally the full-blown version works better.
The other thing that a lot of people do, which also yields good results, is to do two NR passes, one with a high FFT and one with a low FFT, but not trying to reduce the noise too much on either one. The overall effect is a similar level of NR, but often with less artefacts.
3) Read and understand this post, and its implications!

  • Noise reduction (process) on HD video's audio with shotgun microphone (hissing)

okay so i normally master live sets on the condenser microphone in my teams studio but it is not available to the public so i've started doing freestyles, when i use the noise reduction (process) on the audio of my HD videos to remove background noise which my camera is intaking for some reason unknown (on both shotgun and camera) this is without any corrections on, everything on manual etc so nothing to cause the distorted hissing sound.
I stand with the speakers behind my as my shotgun doesn't pick up much from behind so the beat is very quiet, i then have the mc's in front of me performing and i later on add on a 320kps version of the beat in audition and add that audio onto the video.
I started with the FFT size: 4096
And then switched over to try again on FFT size 512 which both fully removed the beat and hissing from the whole audio (what i was aiming for) but both still messed with my video's audio by making their voices sound weird and echoy.
The hissing problem i'm encountering is common although it randomly started a week or so ago, my camera is the Canon 600D
i've looked up on how to resolve the issue but none of the fixes have worked for me
Putting everything on manual didn't work
Turning auto corrections off didn't work
Turning the volume down a lot did work but did not pick up sound levels or quality anywhere near the level i need
I phoned up canon customer services and they told me to send me camera off to the other side of the UK since i have warranty but i need this camera daily and can't afford to go however long they plan to take to return my camera in working order.
If anyone has any advice for me it would be much appreciated, thank you.

When you get to Process > Noise Reduction > Reduce Noise, usually a preset isn't the answer, but some manual fiddling.
Here's the way I approach this:
    1. When I set the noise print, I play/loop the clip and note the level of the noise in your meters. When I get to the threshold in the noise reduction window, that level will be the extreme highest threshold I use, only going lower from there.
    2. When it comes to the reduction, I check the Noise only box while I'm setting it, and boost the reduction until I'm getting noise, but not too much signal I want to preserve. If I hear voice in there, I'm doing too much. And I rarely end up going beyond 60%.
    3. Uncheck the noise only box, and listen to the signal with noise reduced to fine tune further.
Remember this is noise reduction, not noise elimination. And, the STP tool is pretty good for what it is, but it's not anywhere near the best out there.
Good luck, and I hope this helps!

  • The noise reduction in Audition stopped working.

For the past while the noise reduction feature in Audition stopped working. The adaptive one still works and its nearly as good but I OFTEN need to be able to sample the noise and filter it out and it simply does nothing now. You cant hear any difference when you play it and if you apply it anyway the file is unchanged. Need help urgently.
    Thanks!

Thanks. The live chat guy after verifying me and all that stuff told me he was photoshop only and I had to call support. Is there a link where I can just download Audition and reinstall it or how can I do it? Any help appreciated a great deal.

  • Newbie question about vinyl noise reduction

    Dear folks,
I am entirely new to Audition (trying out the Mac beta), so if this question is entirely answered by other threads, please just point me in the right direction. Thanks!
I am transcribing all my vinyl albums (48KHz, 32 bit) as FLAC files and now I need to clean up the transcriptions. Both DeClicker and Noise Reduction (process) seem to do an excellent job at the default settings for each, but I am not sure of the best way to use them--
First, which order is it best to use them in; DeClicker first or Noise Reduction first?
Second, are the default settings ( threshold :30 and complexity:16 forDeClicker and 100%/40dB for Noise Reduction ) the best ones to be using in general? If not, what qualities, audible or otherwise should I be looking/listening forto help me figure out the best settings to use?
Third, any recommendations for help files or tutorials I should read on this subject?
    Thanks for your help!

If I understand you correctly, you're recommending two passes with the Noise reduction process-- one with a large FFT followed by one with a smaller FFT sample size, right? The default for the process is a 4K sample window, with windows from 0.5K to 16K available. What values would you recommend for the two passes, and what NR percentages and dB "reduce by's" would you recommend for each pass.
Yes you understand correctly, but it's rather difficult to say how much to use in any given situation, because it depends entirely on the condition of the original recording. The basic rule is 'as little as you can to achieve an acceptable result', whatever FFT size you are using. As for sizes, the 4k is fine for the LF pass (you might want to look at adjusting the blue line to shape it so that it only attacks the bass, as well) and 16k is fine for everything else.
In some ways it's easier to talk about what is a realistic end result to achieve, than actual reduction numbers. Realistically, you should be able to get vinyl noise floors down to around minus 60-65dB, assuming that your signals get close to 0dB peaks. But with some older records, you may well not get this far before things start to sound rather 'fake' because you've over-processed the results. Often it's better to monitor the results on a pair of headphones rather than speakers - you'll hear more low-level detail, and have a better idea of how much processing you can get away with.
Yes, RX2 is pretty damn good - as good as you can get, in fact. But for vinyl, with care you can definitely get good results with Audition, but it takes more effort, especially with the NR. What actually makes RX2 good is that the multiple pass part of the processing is done for you by the software, and that's the major difference - other than that, the basic algorithms are quite similar. But, it costs an arm and a leg, so unless you have a massive amount to do, or somebody's paying you to do this, it's a dubious investment.

  • Background Traffic Noise Reduction

    Hello all,
I'm currently editing my short film and I have huge issues with background traffic. I've faught with Adobe Audition for about 2 hours now and I can't get a good reduction on my background traffic. I've used adaptive noise reduction and Noise reduction (Process) and I just can't seem to get a decent reduction without having weird noises that would just make everything worse.
If you want you can listen to it for yourself, I'm linking it with dropbox. The beginning is the worst I have plenty of other audio that has more backgrounf traffic.
Thank you in advance for you help! Cheers!

I couldn't find a link to your Drop Box but I can make a few general comments.
First, traffic noise is going to be very difficult to work on because it's constantly changing.  Noise reduction is most effective on things like electronic hiss or an air conditioner running continuously in the background.
However, to give yourself the best chance, use the Noise Reduction (Process) version.  Grab a sample of the background noise but don't try to get rid of all the noise at once.  Do a very light reduction, grab another noise sample, then do another light process.  Keep this up until you hit the best compromise between background noise and the sort of artefacts you've noticed.  Depending on exactly what the noise is, you may find that increasing the FFT size helps.
Because the background will be constantly changing, you MAY find you get better results by breaking it up into smaller chunks with more similar noise problems....general traffic is different from a passing bus.
Which leads me to a final suggestion...if certain noises are a fairly specific frequency, instead of using NR, you might try to go to spectral view and use the marquee tool to draw around the offending frequency and either just hit delete or maybe the spot healing tool.  This'll only work with a narrow frequency band--I was once able to remove a passing ambulance siren almost totally using this method--but a passing truck rumbling through a wide range of frequencies wouldn't really work.
Finally, you might find that some subtle boost in the fundamental voice frequencies might help your intelligibility a bit.  You'll have to play with frequencies to find the right ones but they'll be in the mids somewhere.

  • Noise Reduction Preview Volumes

I have an odd bug. It seems that sometimes (about 50% of the time), when I preview a noise reduction process, the volume is maximized. It's REALLY loud. I have no idea how it does it. I try turning it down, but the response doesn't seem to be related to what I do. If I stop playback, then start again, the volume may be normal.
I'm actually afraid to preview my noise reduction. Does anyone have any experience with this?

  • Noise reduction makes robotic voice

I have been using Noise Reduction feature on "Audition" with no problems. When I have upgraded to "Adobe Soundbooth" I have an issue with this feature. When I turn it on I hear robotic echo of the voice no matter what the parameters are, even if the slider of parameters is on the 0 point (no noise reduction at all). Furthermore, it makes no difference if I am doing it with noise reduction profile or not.

I tried using noise reduction for old recordings namely background hiss...then I discovered the audio effects work better for this...called "remove hiss" and also in the simple effects "Parametric" called "Under a blanket"

  • Wind Noise Reduction

I'm using PPCS3 for a project and have a video interview piece that was shot outside. The subject was wearing a lav mic with a windscreen on it, but there is still a considerable amount of wind noise coming through. Can anyone suggest a way to at least reduce the wind noise without reducing the vocal quality too badly? I have the entire CS3 suite, so Soundbooth is also available to me.
Thank you in advance for your help.
    -Ken

Hi there Bill, or anyone else that could help,
I too have a wind problem!
I'm using CS6 Master Collection, pretty new to everything so please go easy.
I have a fair bit of open air footage with a huge amount of wind noise. I have played with the Noise Reduction effect in Audition (as there doesn't seem to be Soundbooth any longer?) but i have literally 'played', i mean i don't really know what i am doing. It doesn't seem to reduce the wind noise more just all noises, which obviously isn't that helpful.
Are you able to give me any help, point me in the direction of a tutorial, or better yet if you know a program / plug in that really gets to grips with wind noise?
It seems that most of the time people are wanting to use noise reduction to get rid of a constant, set noise like a hiss but wind noise is totally different as it’s a very dynamic noise, constantly changing so you can’t 'sample' a section as the next section might sound different but is still just as unwanted.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

  • Applying Noise Print and Noise Reduction to Entire Sound File

It has been a while since I've opened Soundtrack Pro so I can't quite recall a final step in a noise reduction process I'm attempting:
    1. I selected a portion of the track I'm working on that has just the tape hiss I'm trying to reduce.
    2. then I selected "Set Noise Print",
    3. then "Reduce Noise"
Question: how do I now apply the Reduce Noise setting to the entire track and not just on the portion of the track I sampled for the the Noise Print? I can't remember what the next step is. What am I forgetting here? Thanks.

It was so obvious that I figured it out immediately after the post.
After "Set Noise Print" I reselected the entire track and THEN applied "Reduce Noise".
Maybe getting a full night's sleep sometime would help me figure this sort of thing more quickly on my own.

  • Script for noise reduction

I would like to apply noise reduction using a script. I captured the noise profile then recorded the script.
When I play it back, nothing happens. If I select "stop at dialogs" then the noise reduction dialog comes up and tells me that I need to capture a profile.
Is there any way to use the existing captured profile in a script?
    Bruce

    Thank you, that did it!
For the benefit of anyone else wanting to use noise reduction in a script, here is all you need to do. Before recording the script, capture and save the noise profile. In the example below, it is saved to
    i C:\my_profile.fft.
Then record the script. In the noise reduction dialog, select
    i Load from Profile
and choose the profile you saved. Adjust any other parameters, do the noise reduction and save the script.
Here's an example of what a script that just does noise reduction looks like:

  • Audition CS6 crashes while running Adaptive Noise Reduction

    Hi everyone!
So that is the problem, I edit an audio file, run Adaptive Noise Reduction filter, and somewhere during the processing the computer just crashes. Sometimes it happens and sometimes not. I saw that computer showes up an alert message just before the crash but I wasn't fast enough to read what was written there. Recently I did a clean system install and have just some programs installed. Before system reinstall the problem was not there, although the program (audition) is exactly the same. What to do?

    Srivas 108 wrote:
The system is Win 7 64 Home Edition. It was working ok before. Maybe I should install all the updated? I hate to do that, my experience is that it slows down the system in the long run, but looks like I should do that.
I run the pro version, but it's basically the same. I've got all the updates installed, but I haven't noticed it slow down at all. Mind you, this is a fast system anyway. But if it's crashing, then installing updates won't fix that; you need a fresh reinstall on an absolutely clean disc first. Okay, that's a pain - but look on the bright side; you aren't running Windows 8. Recently I wasted nearly a day of my life on that, and I'll never get it back. The basic rule about M$ OS's hasn't changed - it's only the odd-numbered ones that are worth bothering with, as a rule. And none of them are worth installing until the first service pack is issued.

  • Noise reduction did nothing - no instructions for the process

I entered noise reducer in the help menu and "what's new in imovie comes up" - I am looking for info on the process to apply noise reduction and nothing applied even two layers down in what came up in "what's new in imovie".
I have bought the book iMovie HD 6 & iDVD 6 and it does not give direction on how to apply. It does say page on 157, "this effect minimizes white noise, crowd noise, and hum - but nothing else - no directions on how to apply!
My audio clip is selected in the time line and if it is as simple as selecting the apply button in audiofx, then select noise reduction, then select apply - IT DID NOTHING.
Is this how it works for application and out come?
    Can anyone help,
    jim

No, but the Help menu in iMovie does:
    To add an audio effect:
Click the Timeline Viewer button (shown above).
Select the audio clip or clips you want to add an effect to.
Tip: To learn how to select multiple clips, see "Selecting clips" below.
Click the Editing button, and then click Audio FX at the top of the Editing pane.
Select the audio effect you want from the effects list.
Adjust the settings for the effect.
Different controls appear depending on the effect you select. For example, if you select Reverb, you can adjust the intensity of the reverberation by choosing a reverb style and dragging the Less/More slider.
Click Preview to hear the effect.
To stop previewing the effect, click Preview again.
If necessary, repeat any of the above steps until you have the effect the way you want it.
To add the effect to your selected clips, click Apply.
When you add an audio effect to a video clip, iMovie automatically extracts the audio from the clip. The extracted audio with the applied effect appears as a separate clip in one of the audio tracks in the timeline viewer. If you want to add multiple audio effects to the same portion of video, be sure to select the extracted audio clip to add the additional effects to.

  • Nikon D70s + Process 2010 + Luminance Noise Reduction + Adjustment Brush = blurry picture

Please let me know if you have experienced the following and if it is a known bug:
I'm processing a very noisy Nikon D70s raw photograph with Lightroom 3: In the develop mode, I applied the 2010 process under Camera Calibration, and then set the Luminance Noise Reduction to 98 in the detail panel. At this point, the resulting improvement over the original is dramatic and the details are rather crisp given the original condition of the photo.
However, the moment I apply a local adjustment to the photo, bluriness is introduced to the photo; the bluriness affects the entire photo and not only the areas impacted by the local adjustment. This undesired effect appears with the adjustment brush and gradient and the only parameter that the local adjustment applies is an increase in the exposure by 0.01, which should normally not produce much of a visible effect.
I exported the photo to a jpeg and found the undesired effect in the jpeg file.
I believe this issue has a relation with the RAW file coming from a Nikon D70s as I performed a Sync of all the settings on RAW photos originating from a Canon 30D, and from a Canon XSi and did not see any of the undesired effect.
These steps appear to be reproduceable on any of the Nikon D70s RAW photos that I have in my catalog.
    Please share some feedback.
    Thanks,
    Bruno

The NEF and xmp files are now available at http://drop.io/LR3BugAdjBrushNoise8736
In the current development settings, I added an adjustment brush to the ceiling with an exposure adjustment of +0.01 simply to demonstrate the issue. As soon as the adjustment is applied, bluriness can be seen and is most apparent in the faces but can also be seen on the wooden floor and everywhere else.
I also noticed that by setting the mask to show (O), ditthering can be seen in the mask even though it was applied with feather, flow and density all set to 100%.
Let me know what you think.

  • LR3: lack of processing feedback after applying noise reduction

Now with the bigger RAW files (7D's 18Mpix) Lightroom is becoming really slow.
On several ocassions after applying some noise reduction, and waiting for some 20-30sec for a visible result, I moved the slider back and forth in the wrong assumption that nothing happens, but in fact I was disrupting an ongoing operation. The problem in LR3 is that it does not show any of its tooltips with an information that a noise reducing operation is in progress.
I hope that the team would improve this in the next version 3.01, we need at least the tooltip to appear.
    Thomas

    i absolutely agree!
Now, in LR3 you can move the sliders very smoothly - but nothing happens for seconds.
Same happens with the local adjustment brush. You click on the picture and start to paint but nothing happens. After a few seconds the pin appears and MAYBE the first click for the mask is set. After that you can paint further.
Another thing is, that it takes longer for a RAW to be loaded. Sometimes i see the "Loading"-Hint for 10 Seconds or more. If i need to scan fast thru hundreds of pictures to clone away some things or make a face a little bit brighter, these loading times feels like ages.
Both is very annoying and was better in LR2.
BTW: I think LR3 has a serious memory leak because i can see LR3 slowing down over time. After developing about 20 pictures everything slows down, sometimes to a point where i think LR3 has frozen (no CPU usages, just standing still for 30 seconds or more). When i quit and restart LR3, everything is quick until the next slow down.
(older iMac 24", white model, 3GB RAM that can be used) - you may see this at a later point if you have 8GB or more RAM of course.
