Noise tracking

Hi, I am trying an application of Noise Tracker. I am using the PXI DSA board (4472) to track the sound and I am using 7 microphones. I am planning to integrate this array with a camera, (probably a fire wire camera with CVS). I need some help on noise mapping. Does anyone have an application of the same?
Also, does the number of microphones matter for the application. If I reduce, would I get a better noise tracking application?
If someone has done a similar application, please guide me how to go about it. If you have any piece of related LabVIEW code, kindly share the same.
Thanks,
Guru

  • Applying one track's amplitude properties to another

Hi, I'm fairly new to Audition, and was wondering whether it's possible to apply one track's amplitude properties to a separate track. I've recorded a constant tone, unchanging in pitch, that changes in amplitude. I then have a second track that contains my audio content. At the moment, it contains just pink noise (see image below. Tone is in the top track, noise in the bottom). I was wondering whether there would be any way of masking the amplitude of the noise track with the tone track. I need this for a film project I'm doing; I have a radio in a scene where the camera moves around in one long shot. However, I won't have the final recording for the radio content when I record the shot. Therefore, I want to play a constant tone at a constant volume, and the changes in position of my microphone will result in a changing amplitude to the recorded tone (the whole scene is silent other than the tone, so there will be no erroneous additions to the tone). Could I theoretically then use the tone recorded on set to mask the amplitude of the audio, adding the movement properties to the radio soundtrack?
Thanks in advance, and I apologise if this is simple; as I said, I'm new to Audition.

SteveG, I've had a play around sidechaning the tone track to the audio track using the Dynamic Processing effect. It worked wonders! Thanks for your advice; it was most helpful, and solved my issue. I fiddled around with the settings to provide the best match volume-wise, and produced exactly what I was after. Thanks again.

  • ZE4310EA CD Burner Problem

    Hi,
Using different CD burning softwares (MS, DeepBurner, Burn4Free, RealPlayer, ...) I consistently end up with audio CDs that won't play correctly on my CD player (Onkyo DX-705/703). Schrieking noises, tracks corrupted or nor recognized at all. The CDs may play well on a very low cost DVD player but sometimes there are errors as well. Which leads me to suspect my laptop hardware.
Tried to burn on a friend's (more recent) laptop. This worked.
Is there a known quality problem with the Toshiba  DVD-ROM SD-R2312 ? (I have burned but few audio CDs)
What compatible (slot size, interface, SW driver) replacement do you suggest ?
    Any ther suggestion ?
    Thank you in advance,
    Lautrerable

This is more likely a problem of not using quality blank discs. For more information on blank DVDs (the information is more of less the same for CDs!), see http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm for a list of discs to use, or to be avoided. Verbatim is most suggested, as are Taiyo Yuden. Read that link for more details and help on where to buy them from.

  • Song title incorrect.  refund?

I bought a white noise recording that stated it was looping in the title. It doesn't loop. There is a 15 second pause before it plays again. Shouldn't looping be continuous? Is it possible that it downloaded incorrectly? If so how do I go about fixing it? (already contacted Itunes, awaiting answer) Is there such a thing as a refund or am I stuck with it? Anyone know of an available white noise or similar (brown, purple, etc) that really does loop?

Ok it is probably the track itself that fades out at the end (rather than ending abruptly).
So try this. Figure out at which time the track just begins to fade and note that time.
Select the White Noise track and do a Get Info on the track then click on the options tab. You will see fields for start and stop times. In the STOP time box, enter the time where the track begins to fade, or maybe a second or two before it so it ends before the fade out starts. Likewise, if the tracks starts by fading up into the full volume (starts silent then volume ramps up), set the START time to a point AFTER the track is at full volume. Check boxes in front of both fields should show a check mark to indicate they are active. Now hit OK and exit that window.
NOW play your white noise track with the looping turned on and see if that works better for you.

  • How to create 'Headset' effect (pilots talking)

Please listen to the sound of the pilots talking in this video over their headsets.
I'm trying to create a filter to mimic the sound of pilots talking over the headsets.
Anyone know what settings I would use?
I've tried the "Telephone receiver" and "answering machine" filters that come with Audition, but they just don't sound the same.
    Thanks!

I have an Audition Template to mimic the effect of secured radio comms with noise ducking/driving, using native Audition Filters,  (PM if you want a copy of it, as I can't seem to be able to upload it here).
Radio comms basically involve mono, bitcrushing, noise and signal issues.  I've consider all tools needed as a baseline.  You don't have to use them all.  New communications with strong signals will sound clear and need only subtle tweaking, while older or weaker signals can have more aggressive filter settings.  The real trick is both including and driving the noise introduced in system.
Place the voice in Voice track 1.
Generate a file of white noise for track 2 (Filters - Generate Noise)
The plugin chain uses Native Audition filters.
    Voice track:
First we add gain, if needed.
Second, we turn stereo track to Mono.
Then we run the Adaptive Noise filter with the settings (top slider to bottom) 32, 80, 7, 20, 20, 20, 0.  This creates a gating effect and produces gaps.
Then we EQ, to create a lo-fi effect.  Tweak to your taste.
Then we run the tube-modeled compressor.  Tweak to your taste.
Finally we add a Notch filter, selecting the 200 Hz and Octaves drop down setting to get that high end chirp.
    Noise Track
In the Noise track, we add an amplify filter.  A high gain will make the noise more dominate, and lower will make the voice dominate.
We also have a Dynamics Processing plugin to be driven by the Vocals via side-chain.  On the settings tab, attack and release times must be quick (15ms - 84ms), and link the gain and level channels.
    Master
We again add an amplifier to gain the overall mix
A post EQ, tweak to your liking.
    A multiband compressor
    A hard limiter
Play around with the file.  Turn off the effects and then add each one to see how they apply.
    Voice track settings:
    Noise track settings:
    Master Track Settings:
    Enjoy.

  • Random Audio Spikes

For the life of me I cant figure out what is going on. I have 6 audio tracks; 2 for narative and 4 for soundtrack. There are a few spots where the narrative is broken up with b-roll covering, in these spots the soundtrack raises in level and then drops when the narrative track starts again. It does this every time there is a break in the narrative track. I tried putting some ambient noise tracks behind the narrative, but the soundtrack still spikes. Anyone have any ideas at all??? Thank you for your help.

No I definately understand your suggestions, and I did try them. It is still doing the same thing. I have checked the balances, isolated the tracks, did an audio mixdown, tried putting in abient sound, extended the narrative track so there was no break in it, re-imported the audio file, checked it was an aiff file, scrubbed it, I cant think of anything else. I guess my next step unless anyone can think of something else is to re-install fcp and see if that works. Thank you for your suggestions though, it was very appreciated.

  • Best filter advice for minimizing clothing rustle in an interview situation

I had a fidgety interview subject who was wearing a pacemaker that interfered with the lav mike that we had attached to him. We had to resort to a shotgun mike which provided more shielding. He was sitting in a velour chair and had a tendency to move around quite a bit...with that kind of rustling sound from clothing. Unfortunately we could not switch out his chair.
Any advice on which audio filters in Soundtrack Pro may be the most useful? I could take a look at the frequency spectrum analyser, but I think that is probably only good for removing loud flashes of sound like something hitting the mike boom.
I'm sure others have tried to filter out similar sounds in an interview situation and I thought of asking first before I try my experimentation. Of all the filters one can use, which should I give priority to first?
    Many thanks,
    John

If the rustling noises are a LOT softer than the voice, try the FCP or Apple "expander" used as a noise gate. The FCP documentation discusses it. Basically, you pick a threshhold below which you kill the sound. You'll have to experiment a bit to make sure that you subject speaks or you have other wanted audio that it is not cut off. You also need to be careful that the spots between the subject talking are not unnaturally quiet. I've added an "ambient noise" track to some stuff I've done, or even soft white noise so that it doesn't go dead silent between speeches.

  • XServe (Intel) inside a 4U Gizmac Enclosure

    Greetings to all.
I was just wondering... How "loud" is/are XServes, when installed in something like Gizmac's 4U XRackPro(2) units? They claim they are/aren't noise isolation cases (they say that's not the primary purpose), and I can't seem to get a straight answer to as exactly how efficient these cases are in reducing the noise off an XServe.
Louder then a Mac Pro? Quieter (I doubt that...)? Is it something that's bearable in a home office? Or would noise /still/ be an issue, even with the server inside the Gizmac case?
    Cheers,
    -SC

You probably won't get a straight answer on any of these; it's all dependent on your sensitivity to noise, and your configuration, and how hard your Xserve is working.
With most racks - if they're not specifically acoustical racks - there probably won't be noise-reduction testing, nor any noise reduction materials. It's reasonable to assume the noise will be contained and reduced somewhat, and hopefully you won't encounter any vibrations from any resonance. But noise inside a standard metal box just bounces around looking for a way to leak out or some piece of metal to vibrate.
Xserve is louder than Mac Pro in general, and less loud than some third-party rack-mount servers (some of those are rated at upwards of 74 dB), and relative loudness varies by the load on Xserve box. Xserve fans spinning at idle are OK; noise tracks with fan speed. Heat output ranges from OK to warm, as well.
There are installations around with an Xserve in (big) office closets (watch out for the cooling with this approach) and these can work reasonably well. There are any number of sites with rooms that have been converted into computer rooms, as well.
Most folks tend to pick noise isolation racks or a dedicated server room for most rack-mount servers.

  • Extreme anomaly with iPod Touch battery indicator

I have a 1st generation iPod Touch running iOS 3.1.3.  I never noticed a problem with the battery indicator before.  After last night, however, there seemed to be a tremendous (albeit temporary) anomaly with the battery indicator.  I googled it, but found that most fluctuations in the battery indicator were random and minor compared to what I saw.  Some were due to extreme power draw on the battery.  None of what I found matched my rather unusual circumstances.
Here are the cirumstances.  I live in a noisy apartment building, so I repeated play a noise track on the iTouch to mask out the noise from other dwellings.  The iTouch is docked onto a mini boombox, RCA's RCD175i (http://tinyurl.com/bolurw7), which charges the iTouch as it plays tracks.  I also wear earplugs at night, so I crank the RCD175i's volume to be able to hear the noise track (the iTouch's volume is set to max).  This solution is only partially effective, but that's not central to my description of the problem.
Last night, I was particularly anxious about getting rest, so I cranked the RCD175i's volume significantly more than usual.  I was shocked to find in the morning that the battery indicator showed approximately 20%, even though the charging indicator was showing.  I removed the iTouch and plugged it into the Apple white cable that connects to my laptop's USB, hoping to give it a bit of juice before I took off for the day.  Nothing much changed by the time I unplugged the iTouch to leave.  At the end of the day, however, the battery showed a full charge.
This anomaly does not fit what I found on google because:
    • The power draw was no more than usual
    • It was far greater than the fluctuations I read about
    • It doesn't happen randomly (never happened before)
    • It happened when I docked it on the RCD175i and cranked the volume
    • I have never jailbroken the iTouch
If I had to make a wild guess as to the problem, I would say that the RCD175i's docking interface is improperly designed, which messes with the RCD175i's charging calibration.  Having the volume set high might cause noise to propagate through the dock to the iTouch, maybe degrade recharging voltages/currents being fed to the iTouch, or corrupt feedback signals that control the charging (if any are used).  These are all wild guesses because I have no idea how the iTouch's charging system operates.
    I'd like to ask anyone:
    • for comments on the above speculation and/or solutions
    • for other plausible causes and/or solutions
    • whether they notice a correlation between battery indicator anomalies and docking the iTouch on 3rd party audio systems
    • whether they use the RCD175i specifically and have the same problem with high volume on the RCD175i

I'm beginning to notice a pattern.  When I plug it in to the laptop USB port or to the boombox iPod dock, the battery charge indicator shows about 20%.  I never noticed that before.  When I remove the iPod Touch from the connection, after some (yet undetermined) time, it may go back to 100%.
This seems like a recent behavioural quirk, along with another quirk that seems to have come up at around the same time.  Whenever I plug the iPod Touch into the laptop USB port, I get an autoplay window coming up, which I just banish.  However, it is strange that this has never happened before this strange turn in behaviour with the iPod Touch.

  • Popping/ crackling filter to make film sound like 20s film

Is there a built in filter in FCPro HD that will allow the audio to have the old sounding "pops and crackles" that you hear in older movies.
Also, is there a video filter that will give me the effect of lines and artficats in the film itself that you see like when you go to an old movie theatre and little black shapes appear on the screen from time to time.
    THanx!

If you export to a QuickTime Movie, there's some filters you can apply during that process ... like hair, scratch and dust (I think) ... and they're included free in QTPro.
Other than that, the best film effects package I've seen and used is from www.nattress.com
As for the sound, I've heard pops and crackling on old LP recordings, but not on old films. Perhaps you could sample some of the scratch and pop noises from an old album and build your own 'noise' track.

  • Sleep timer in muvo

    Hi,
any way i can have a sleep timer in my muvo nx 256? perhaps a firware upgrade or something?
I may want to use it with a white noise track to help me sleep.

    Hi,
Is this correctable with a firmware update? I too would love a sleep timer on the MuVo TX FM gb.
Any word on this? Would be great if you could find out for us? thanks alot.

  • Sound distortion on Mavericks (10.9.1)

    Hi.
I am experiencing some audio distortion issues with Mac OS 10.9.1. It sounds as if anytime there is sound coming through my headphones, a noise track starts playing in the background. I tried 2 different headphones, one of them are USB, and the other goes into the headphone plug. Same issues with both. I don't know what is causing it, but I am certain it's the OS-es fault. Watching ANY video on YouTube, listening to music, watching movies... Anything I do in the OS. If I reboot my computer and boot into my Linux partition, everything sounds fine (the USB headphones require some software that is unsuported, but the other ones work well, and I am not getting any distortion in the sound).
    Thanks in advance!

    *bump*
I've heard that reseting the PRAM might resolve audio issues, but I'm not sure if it's safe, since I have a non-native Linux partition with ReFit.

  • How to show individual track information (like in the old iTunes) of a single artist (or that artist's album) without all the noise of every single other artist close in the alphabet?

The new iTunes has truly added extra visual noise.
I am trying to view a single Artist and the individual track information of that artist.  This used to be how itunes was, you could click on a single artist and then the tracks would all have their various categories.
I can still see this but only in the "songs" category and in that I have to see every single song or artist alphabetically.
How do I simply see the artist, and that artist's tracks, as well as the different info about that track I want to see, such as "name, track #, time, year, genre, bit rate, kind, etc."
Please don't counsel me on what information I need to see, or suggest that I stop caring about this, or ask me why I want to see this various info.
It was simple and accessible in the older version and I would probably stop complaining to all of my friends about the latest version of itunes if I can see this old format.
Or... is there a way to re-download the old version?  It's okay that you've made mistakes, every company makes mistakes, if I can revert to the old version that would be great.
    Thank you.

Select the Songs tab, then under iTunes Menu select View then click Show Column Browser. You will see the familiar GENRES ARTISTS ALBUMS header, click on one artist and you will have only the artist's albums and songs showing in the window below with all the specific info you selected under View options. If this is not what you wanted, simply reply with a nice "no thanks".
Search this forum for instructions to reinstall iTunes 10.7, there are quite a few posts explaining the process.

  • How do I set a noise print for the entire track? (Back to Basics)

Ok. I've only worked in STP with single audio clips. Now, I'm trying to adjust audio inside a Multi-Track project sent from FCP... and it's a little different. At least to a guy like me.
I'm struggling with the most basic issue, and that's possibly why I can't find an answer to it.
Simply, "How do I go about setting a noise print for an entire track?" I've done this for a single audio clip, but now that I'm in a slightly different environment my old ways don't work. I've looked through video tutorials hoping to find something but no luck.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    JS

With the audio opened in SoundTrack Pro, select (highlight) a small portion that only contains the noise that you want to reduce.  Sample that section. then select the entire audio clip and use the Noise Reduction tools to reduce the noise that you sampled earlier.
