Noisy blacks in keylighted green screen footage

A friend of mine hired me to do some effects for a pepsi commercial (Video Production 4th quarter final project). He gave me green screen footage of dancers, and he wanted me to key the green out, put them on a black background, and make light streaks coming from their hands. I can do all of this, but I'm having trouble getting it to look perfect. He shot on a dvx100, 24p, and I'm certain he shot at a pretty slow shutterspeed, because I'm losing half of his arm when it moves quickly. I don't think this is fixable (if it is, let me know), but it shouldn't be too distracting. My main concern is I've got a lot of noise in blacks and dark colors, mostly the male dancers jeans. I have to set the screen matte clip black to about 50 to get rid of some noise around the dancer. Is there any way to reduce the noise within the pants/dark colors?
Heres a test shot I just exported:
http://vimeo.com/1721038
Any additional advice or tips on all the effects in this project would definitely be appreciated. Thanks!

thanks for the tip about the noise, I'll try it.
As for the light streaks, your right it does look a little too 2 dimensional. I used Kramer's tutorial to create the light streaks and parent them to a null object, i made the streaks a 3d layer, but I can't figure out how to make the streaks move in 3D space with the dancer's hand being a 2D layer. The only thing I could think of is pushing in with a camera, but I would need to sillouette the dancer to prevent visible pixelation right? Or is there a way where I can move the light streaks in 3D space without sillouetting the dancer?
Thanks ahead of time!

  • How to keyout harsh shadows from green screen footage tutorial

    Hello!!
I have shot a green screen footage outdoors an two clips where shot with the sun making some very harsh shadows that are impossible to key out. I am attaching two photos so that you can see what I mean. I there any other way to go around this problem without rotoscoping because unfortunately it' s not an option for me to reshoot the scene. Maybe lume key could help but I am not sure...
Any suggestion would be appreciated!! The first image is the original one. The second is with Keylight only and the third is with Keylight and Luma Key together...
    Thanks
    Yiannis

Duplicate your layer, key once for the light green, key a second time for the dark green, Output the mattes and combine them to create the final matte. Pre-comp the two shots and use as a garbage matte for the final key by adding a matte choker and making the pre-comp a track matte for your final key.
There are a zillion other ways but Here's what the combined matte looks like from your screenshot.

  • Weird blinking screen on green screen footage

I have this problem with AE, when I RAM preview the pre-keyed green screen footage I get a colourful box of lines popping up now and then when I play the footage. It's hard to explain, but the screen looks like one of those vertical-colourful-lines that you get on the TV when the channel isn't working (On Screen Display?) I will attach the screenshot of how it looks to this discussion. Also, the footage is not missing, it's there, and the blinking only happens when I preview in AE, not when it's rendered. Thank you!

The format is .MOV, straight from Canon 600D, so I guess no codec?
A format is just a container for a video encoded with a codec. All video, as Rick says, has a codec. Most DSLR's use an h.264 variant as their codec. The problem with that codec for certain things is that it uses interframe compression. I could get into a long explanation of this, but the short version is that it doesn't have full information for every frame. That sort of thing can sometimes get screwy in AE which uses full-frame information for every frame. This was much more of an issue in earlier versions of AE, but from CS5 onward, things are much improved. However, with multiprocessing on, sometimes you can see weirdness with these highly-compressed interframe codecs. That's why Rick is suggesting you try turning that off and clearing your cache.

  • Hey all - I am just learning version 6.0.6 - can't use green screen footage

When I try to use chroma key (edit green screen footage I've shot) the option is greyed out. Thanks for the help!

Sorry to break it to you, but FCP6 is not FCPX. Go to the Final Cut Studio forum with your question.
Er, this discussion showed up as an FCPX discussion when I clicked on it. Not sure why, but i apologize if you posted it  correctly in the first place....

  • How to export green screen footage.

I recently shot on a green screen, i keyed it in after effects with keylight but want to do color correction in FINAL CUT. when i export the video it comes out with a black background instead of transparency so it doesn't allow me to composite footage over the background so i can't color correct or do anything because the clips with the black solid background are useless. how can i export the already keyed footage so that i keep the transparency for the background?????
    thanks

This thread has become a mess of confusing information. Just to clarify a few points:
1GB RAM is not really enough to run AE well. Your purchase of 4GB is a smart move.
AE manages its own RAM usage, so its very possible that it may only use 20% of available RAM, depending on the contents of your project and the amount of precomping etc that you've used. Once you have the extra RAM, enabling Multi-Processor rendering is the best way to utilize RAM during the rendering process.
The "Secret" option mentioned refers to a secret preference menu in AE, which is enabled by holding the Shift key while choosing preferences. Unless there is clear evidence that your system is running out of RAM while rendering, there's no need for you to use the Secret prefs menu.
The "3 GB switch" referred to is not relevant in your case - it applies strictly to Windows XP users.
In summary, install the extra RAM and activate multi-processor rendering to speed up your renders.
Export your keyed footage using the "Lossless with alpha" Output Module in the Render Queue. This will provide transparency info when you take the footage to FCP.
Alternately, as suggested by Mylenium, do the colour correction within AE.

  • Keylight Green Screen - Noise on Talent

We have some footage of a gent standing in front of a green screen, which was lit by a pro.
I used Keylight in AE to superimpose the man over some stock footage.
The edges don't look bad, but the man is wearing a dark suit, which has a lot of noise in it. How can I minimize this? (Reshooting is not an option.)
Since I am a novice, I am including a screen shot, which includes my Keylight settings.
The below still doesn't look completely horrible, but during playback, the noise is obvious and distracting.

One way to solve this is by first creating an interior mask...
1.)  Draw a mask that surrounds the character with just the edges left showing.  Then animate the mask path to follow the character for the duration of the shot.  The mask doesn't have to be perfect it just has to stay within the edges of the character.
2.)  Then duplicate the mask to create an exterior mask...
a.)  Copy and paste the first layer with the animated mask on it so it's above the original layer.
b.)  Change the bottom mask so it's inverted.
c.)  Then apply the Keylight effect to the bottom layer so it's only effecting the information between the edge and the green screen.
d.)  Then change the Keylight effect settings until you have a good key.
e.)  The exterior edge may turn a slightly different color than the interior character so you may have to play with the mask expansion and feather settings on both layers in order to blend the exterior edge with the interior.
Finally, a blur effect could be added to the exterior keyed layer to soften any noise around the edges

  • How do I make green screen footage tiny - need tiny people on my video

Ok....I've looked everywhere but I'm not having luck.
I want to take screen screen footage (people dancing) and make them tiny to place in the corners of my video.
Where do I go for tutorials on this?
    Thanks.
    BTW  I love 6.0!!!!

Here are three quick tutorial sources to give you a start on green screening. After you do the green screen then you just have to play with the motion effects on the clip to get it to the size and position you want.

  • Getting cleaner edges with  4:1:1 miniDV  green screen footage

I understand 4:1:1 miniDV footage is not so good for green screen stuff. From what I've gathered searching google, it helps to blur the U and V channels before applying a color key. How do I do that in After Effects? Does anyone know any other tricks?

You can transform the colorspace using the Channel Combiner effect. Just don't forget to transform it back after you've done your blurs. You can further refine this technique by separating the transformed channels using e.g. Shift Channels and treating each component separately. You can properly recombine them by using e.g. the Add (RGB) or Luminance (YUV) blendmode. Anothr possible trick is to duplicate the layer and use blendmodes like Color in combination with your blur, then key the resulting pre-composition. Still, the best solution (if you do this regualarly) is to look into some specialized deartifacting plugins. A good generic point to start is RevisionFX SmoothKit collection which offers a wide selection of adaptive blurs that can be used to even out the background (Median) or soften block artifacts after the keying. Plus it has the advantage of a great variety of otehr creative uses... Also check out Primatte and its built-in deartifacting mechanisms. I'm sure you can also find simialr complementary tools from other plugin vendors.

  • Exporting keyed out green screen footage

I've keyed out the green screen from my footage of someone standing. I now wish to export it and send to someone else to do all the graphics behind the person.
I've tried exporting as a quicktime but when they recieve the footage they can't put any background SFX in.
    Help anyone?

to export your keying you will have to make sure that your export includes the corrcet alpha channel.
look in your wireframe/ image drop down menu above the clip viewer and select alpha
you will see that by keying out you are removing the alpha (white elements) from the area you dont want to keep ( ie. the blue screen) you will need to provide your fx guys with this info.
try exporting your seq as a quicktime whih supports alpha info (like animation) and choose millions + in the colors to include the alpha.
or you can provide the alpha info seperately on a qt of the same clip duration - copy the clip ad use the extract filer to copy the alpha ino to the RGB channels and provided your FX guys with both the normal clip and the B+W clip - if they know what hey are doing they can put these clips back together in their FX package to just keep the non-bluescreen areas of the clip.
    oes that make sense

  • Flipping green screen footage causes error with background

    Hi,
I have created a short 30 second video using a green screen. I realised after that I needed to flip it (I was point the wrong way!) So I dragged it into my project and then flipped it. THen when I dragged the background picture in and choose "green screen" the image is all weird. I try to change the efects, colour etc but it doesn't seem to work.
If I drag the back ground image in first and then the green screen video they merge OK but I cannot flip the green screen video once it is in project with the background image already there.
Any one have this problem and know how to fix it - or do I have to reshoot the video and point the other way!?
    Thanks
    Cheers

    Hi bogiesan,
    Thanks for the help.
My footage is actually shot with a green floor. The problem I'm having is the final product needs to be an actor walking out with a transparent background, but casting a shadow on the floor. So that the shaow will show up no matter what background the customer decides to use the video with.
If I try applying a drop shadow or a Radial Shadow the shadow shows up BEHIND the actor not below. I must be making this 10 times harder than it needs to be.
    Any Advise would be appreciated.
    Thanks again,
    Bob
I'm not grasping the issue, then, sorry. Just use the shadow you have captured. Setting a chromakeyer to pass the shadow is not difficult.
The problem with faking a shadow is, yes, it's ten times more difficult than getting it in the original shoot because of all the problems we've discussed. with a shadow layer there is not interaction with the feet and the 3D projection is not realistic enough to be accepted by an audience; it will always look fake. You CAN create a projected 3D shadow by carefully placing a light in a 3D scene and placing a copy of your matted character perpendicular to the light source and setting the layer to project the shadow only. But it still is not real.

  • White areas when keying a green screen footage.....

    Hello there!
Have a look at the YouTube video link to see a peculiar problem.
Do you jappen to know of a solution around that?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RD1y5-yiasw
    Thanks!
    Yiannis.

Yes you are right my friend....
It is a 1080i footage shot in a photographic studio with proper and even (diffused) lighting.
    The comp is 1080 (resolution).
I first refined the footage (smoothed even more the green backdrop, eliminated even the slightest noise (it didn't have much anyway).
I exported it totally uncompresed (Quicktime mov - uncompressed)
and I reimprted the perfect and uncompressed clip and started apllying some effects first in order to smooth any hard edges and generally to prepare the clip for keying.
But when the actress joins her limps or arms and there is a very small area between her limps mayby Keylight cannot grab the green color in this tiny area and I get these white
    edges.....
I guess that eventually I wiil have to mask the footage.....
    Thanks!!

  • ??? black or green screens

Downloaded new version of Adobe Reader 10.1.4, but did not delete old version before installing
Adobe help suggests a plug in may have been lost when I deleted old version
Re installed new version but still only seeing all black or all green screens when I should see the PDF document.
    Suggestions!!

    Hi Snewwzzin,
Asyou have previously had other version(s) of Reader installed, it may be a good idea removing them all before doing the above. You can use this tool:
    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
it would remove the previous version and then try installing the new version of Reader

the material you're linking to is in a .flv container (and downloading it violates the ToU of YouTube, just to mention that )
after re-wrapping it into a suitable format, works like charme:

and somehow the dino is a lil' bit 'opaque'
how or into what did you convert the t-rex.flv?

  • Green Screen Not Working

I seem to be following the instructions in iMovie v10.0 (Mavericks Version). I add the green screen footage to the project, above the static image. I choose Video Overlay and choose green screen. The pale green background to my greenscreen footage changes to a solid computer generated green, but when I check the tick box the image underneath does not appear, I just get the deep green. In the timeline the static image is still there, but it is not revealed. Cant see how to make it reveal.

    sounds like a not-properly-lit background ....
can you apply a screen-shot of the 'green' source?
