Noisy Dual G4 1.42

I am currently running a dual G4 1.42 GHz with a GeForce Ti 4600 128 Mb graphics card and 2 Gig of Ram on OSX 10.4.11
I am fairly happy with the performance of the computer with one exception.
Periodically the cooling fan roars away and is extremely noisy.
I am not using any demanding apps just web browsing.
Does anyone know how I can quieten it down ?
My G4 1.25 single never makes the same level of noise.

That sound just like the problems from the fans on a G5 . I did not no that apple used this type of management for the cooling fans on the g4 computer . In that case you can see if your computer need s the fans calibrated . The best thing to do is get the service manual for it and go from there .I also see your running tiger not leopard . It may have something to do with how you also set the fans for this computer I would see if you can set the fan to a lower speed .try the setting for the processor speed , I dont no if it there for you in tiger but it there in leopard . aIts under system preference / Energy savers/ options . try that to see if that works .

During FaceTime calls with my wife i´m sometimes using the mute function. Often she and the People around her can hear me although my Iphone (5 with IOS 7.0.2) ist showing "mute".
Most Times i´m using a Headset but the failure also appeared without it several Times.

    Barra_240t,
Thanks for your response. I'll answer your question and see if you have any tips or thoughts. However, as Hatter points out below, mine is actually a Power G5 and not a Mac Pro, so if the architecture is significantly different I may need to respost my question to a different Apple Discussions section.
(I hadn't realized until now that mine wasn't a Mac Pro as I bought it second hand. On a budget, I also have been unable to buy a surge protector of the expensive variety that Hatter suggests [1500VA UPS], but I've run my unit run only through a lower grade store-bought surge protector which shows no signs of burn out, blown fuses or anything else that would suggest a power surge. I also made sure to turn off all electricity in the room prior to leaving the country on my three week trip.)
The noisier dual fan console on the lower deck of the Power Mac was receiving power. I unplugged it and noticed the fan on the upper deck also operates and I hear some spin-up activity from the hard drive when I first turn on the poewr. As I'm unable to disconnect the top fan, I can't hear for sure if there is power activity in any other area, but I don't think there is. The power indicator light right above the power button illuminates normally when I power up (but does not then blink as would be the case if RAM was poorly installed, etc.) As I noted earlier, there is no chime and the computer does not respond to the keyboard and I am unable to open the DVD drive by pushing eject. The red beam in the mouse also does not come on, so presumably no power reaches anything attached by USB.
Does that sound like a power block failure? If so, what to do? Is a DIY fix possible? (Advisable?) There have been no electrical storms that I know of since I have been back home and had the electricity on again.
    Thanks.

  • VCD 2 channel audio

    Hi,
I copied a avseq01.dat file from a VCD to my hard disk, then I dragged the file to Toast 6 video window and burn a VCD out of it. When I played the copied version on my stand alone DVD player, it played but I encouted audio problem. I couldn't select the language that I prefered (the original VCD is a dual language audio), and instead the audio is kind of mixed with noisy dual language.
Would you please tell me what can I do to correct this problem? In fact, I only one language. Please advise.
    Thanks a lot

    Thanks Doug.
The .dat file I copied was long time ago because I didn't have time to watch it, the original VCD is no longer with me. I thought that was the quickest way to make a copy for later viewing. Now then I realised that it doesn't work. Is there a way I can do in order to make the audio work when I watch in DVD player? Shall I do something to .dat file before I burn VCD? Well, you are right, I should have think of copy it by using toast that time.
    Please help. Thanks

  • G5 Dual 1.8Ghz -randomly very NOISY & FAST fan!

Hi I couldn't find a post for this elsewhere!
1 or 2 times a week my G5 dual 1.8Ghz fan will begin to speed up and become incredibly fast and noisy, when this happens it doesn't slow back down, it keeps going!
Once this begins I am often unable to shutdown or restart the computer and I have to resort to pressing the power button.
On restarting the fan is normal again, but it always happens again at some point.
This happens while the computer is 'awake', but might have happened from sleep once or twice (I can't remember).
    Many thanks for your help,
    Colin
    G5 dual 1.8Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   2gb RAM

Hello Colin and welcome to the Apple forums.
This is what we call a "Kernal Panic" and basically the OS stops responding, also to hardware which slows down the fans from the default "turbo" mode your experiencing.
What could be causing this requires a careful process of elimination.
Disconnecting all other external hardware except a wired mouse, keyboard and one monitor is the first step.
Next is to backup all data, c boot from the G5 Tiger (not upgrade over Panther disk!) and Disk Utility Erase w/Zero option your boot drive. Reinstall Tiger fresh and immediatly Software update until clear. Install only vital apps from original sources and cd's (avoid those that alter your sytem/ use a admin password to install), files and data from backup. Update your drives driver software from the makers sites for Tiger.
If these two methods don't resolve the problem, then you should try installing a new boot drive (Zero it first) and repeating the step above to eliminate a bad boot drive.
Once these three steps are done and you still have problems, it could be a RAM or defective video card or other major hardware problem.

  • G5 Dual 2.7Ghz Constant Noisy Fans

    Hi there,
I'm really annoyed with this whole situation since Apple don't appear to have publicly acknowledged the noisy fans/chirping noise problems G5 users (with varying spec hardware) have been experiencing and posting about for over a year.
    Anyway, here's the deal:-
My main spec is as follows: G5 Dual 2.7Ghz/4.5GB RAM/Mac OS X 10.4.6 installed on the shipped Western Digital 250GB SATA, 2nd internal 250GB SATA (Maxtor DiamondMax), 20" aluminium Apple Studio Display.
Since I performed the upgrade to 10.4.4 back in early May 2006 the fans have been constantly on as soon as the login window appears and remain at full pelt all the while the machine is on - clearly unacceptable and unusable. Fortunately for me it's not my only Mac although this is besides the point as I have now had an unusable machine for over a month and not been able to do any work with it - it is a production machine used for making music with Logic.
The bottom line is that I've not been able to make any music!
None of the suggested resolution methods that have been written about in the forums or elsewhere on the 'net (eg. installing CHUD tools etc) have made a blind bit of difference.
Furthermore, I have always had the chirping sounds since I purchased the machine in person from the Apple Store in July 2005.
For the past few weeks I was convinced that the fan problems were caused by the 10.4.4 update (when it started) and that the subsequent 10.4.6 update hadn't cured the problem.
Prior to this, I hadn't run a software update since December 2005 purely because I had heard horror stories from friends and other G5 users posting to forums etc. - if it ain't broke, don't fix it right?
I haven't really had the time to devote to trying to sort the problem out but I decided earlier today that tonight was the night to have a look at it.
Having spent all evening trying various things I am now convinced it is a hardware problem as opposed to being software related.
Here's what I tried earlier with the machine spec as above:-
    1. Booted the G5 with Disk Warrior 3.0.3 boot CD
    2. Ran all Disk Warrior tasks on both drives - eg, 0% fragmentation
    3. Re-booted, fan noise still there from login window
    4. Manually ran daily, weekly and monthly CRON jobs from Terminal - OK
    5. Ran Disk Utility on main HD, repaired permissions - OK
    6. Ran Disk Utility on secondary HD, verified disk - OK
    7. Powered down
    8. Removed all leads incl. power, monitor, all USB and Firewire
    9. Removed 4GB RAM leaving 500MB stock RAM, reset the PMU
10.Ensured the removable fans (covering the RAM) were re-seated firmly
11.Replaced plastic 'door', attached monitor (DVI only) and keyboard USB
12.Re-booted, same problem, fan noise still there from login window
13.Attached Firewire HD with Mac OS X 10.3.8 installed
14.Selected Firewire HD in the Startup Disk system pref
15.Rebooted into Panther, same problem, fan noise still there from login window
    AAAAAARRRRGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
The last time I booted my G5 from the Panther Firewire HD (which incidentally hasn't been used since) was prior to me doing the 10.4.4 update on my G5's main boot drive and there was NO fan noise whatsoever!!!!!
Clearly I need to call and speak to someone at Apple tomorrow as the G5 is nearly one year old and I need to get this problem sorted out before it's out of warranty.
It just seems an odd coincidence that the problem started when it did!
Anyway, if any Apple techs or other G5 owners with a similar setup (specifically the dual 2.7) are reading this I'd appreciate a response or some advice for other things to try.
I'm just really frustrated and a little annoyed that having been a very content Mac user for years this is the first and only time I've ever had a problem with a piece of Apple kit.
Like I said at the top of the post, I can't believe the lack of acknowledgement on Apple's part as it would appear to be a known/common issue.
    Just my £0.02.
    Thanks for reading/listening.

Ok, take a look on your plastic shield, one of the bottom "tabs" should have a shiny metal coating of some sort, if it's gone or moved, then this could be the reason your fans are going "turbo".
If your fans are just at a high speed all the time, consider lowering your room temps to about 75ºF and see how it goes after a few hours/days.
It's most likely a wise decision to have the G-folks take a look at it anyway before it gets out of warranty. you might need a fan calibration or firmware change.
You still have a chance to buy AppleCare and get it registered before the 1 year warranty expires.
The Dual 2.7 is the hottest PM of the bunch, overclocked I would think.
You said the WD drive was OEM correct? Came with the PM stock?
Because the newer WD drives now have a new SATA spec that requires a SATA PCI card to function correctly in PM's.
Have you tried a complete reinstall of the OS?
Did you upgrade Tiger over Panther? (not good, less secure, previous exploits)
Do a backup, a clone of your boot drive to a external using Carbon Copy Cloner (check in the forums for their advice!) would be better.
the c boot off of Tiger install disk (not upgrade version) and from the installer menu Disk utility Erase w/Zero the boot drive (takes longer but writes are more reliable) and then reinstall Tiger, software update till clear, reinstall iLife '06 and all apps from fresh sources, avoid Migration Assistant (too blind, no app DRM copies) install files and see if your fan problems return.
Sometimes if Mac OS X is not operating correctly it won't tell the hardware to turn the fans down.
Don't install any OS/root level/admin password type programs or hacks until you've had a chance to clone that pristine puppy to a external drive (preferably 2) and keep it disconnected for safekeeping.
It's takes practically no time to option boot off a clone to recover, repair or reverse clone to the original drive. If your exploited, first c boot and Zero the infected drive before hooking up and option booting off the clone of course.

  • Noisy G5 (Dual 2 Ghz)

After my G4 with a lot of nois and a new fan that doesn't work, I now have a G5.
But he makes nois too, when I want to start something he begins to rattle...:(
    Some solution?
G5 Dual 2 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Happy Mac Man

If you open the silver side door (but leave the clear plastic deflector in place) and then open a program, does the "rattle" come from the rear of the G5, at the top?
If so, it is probably the hard drive accessing. Some drives are noisier than others, but if Disk Utility doesn't find any problems and the S.M.A.R.T. status is 'Verified' there isn't really much you can do about it...
This G5 dual 2 with 9 internal fans and another on the graphics card makes a noise, but it's not too bad.
Keeping the room cool will help keep the fan noise down.
If you have the '747' roaring fans, that's a different matter, and you should post again!

  • DVD drive in dual core noisy - is this normal?

Is everyone else's superdrive in their dual cores noisy when reading discs?
    Loads of seeking type noise.
    Drive - Hl-ds-st DVD-RW GWA-4165B

mine is the same as yours and it seems to be very sensitive because some disks, with the exception of the sound of spinning, are very quiet while others, including the ones that came with the computer, are noisy--sounds like an unbalanced disk--with lots of 'clicking' noises. It does work, however and I've no trouble burning cd's, dvd's (-r and +r) and will try the first dual layer today.

  • Fans noisy with Maverick and dual screen

    Hi,
I use a second screen on my MBP.
Since I have installed Maverick 10.9.1, the fans rotate at 5500 rpm all the time (even when I do nothing). And... it's noisy !
If I unconnect the 2nd screen, after seconds, the fans rotate slowlier.
When I was on Mountain Lion, this problem wasn't.
I try a SMC reset with no success.
I don't know if there is a solution or if I must wait for the new release of Maverick.
    Thankl's for your help.
    Fabrice - Bordeaux (France)

Either use separate X (gnome remembers things properly then) or learn to deal with not having that many panels . Separate X means you can't drag windows from screen to screen.

  • Audible noise, Noisy, Buzzing AEx Dual Band?

Got my AEx Dual Band and set it up this weekend. Connects via 5GHz to an AppleTV and Time Capsule; via LAN to my iMac / NAS / printer.
Good speeds, internet surfing is great, etc. It's as silent as a church mouse.
Tonight, the AppleTV was doing a major sync (hundreds of songs) and The Time Capsule began a backup. Call me crazy, but the AEx dual band started making noise!!! I swear I could hear a faint buzz with every song that was synced (you can see the titles progress on iTunes).
After cancelling the sync, all is silent again.
The AppleTV and Time Capsule are a couple of rooms away, so they are not the culprit.
Anyone else "hear" their AEx Dual Band?
    Thanks
    Will
EDIT: It DEFINITELY "buzzes" when syncing the AppleTV!!! Is this normal?

Problem Solved: I noticed the same problem a few days after I purchased my AEDB, so I called the store, who transferred me to Apple Care. The guy at Apple Care said I would have to take it back to the store so that a "Genius" could run some tests on it. I did just that, but the store was very busy and the "Genius" did not have the proper space to set it up and do testing, so instead he swapped it out for a brand new one. I asked him "So, if this new one makes the same buzzing noise, I guess we can assume that it's supposed to do that?", to which he replied, "Yup". I brought home the new one and plugged it in and it makes the same buzzing noise. I notice it most when I'm downloading HD content to the AppleTV. So the answer to this problem is either Apple has a whole bunch of defective units out there that make a buzzing noise, or that more likely, it just makes that noise.

  • Noisy power supply when running of UPS?... follow up post.

Ned/The hatter your input here would be most appreciated along with anyone else using a UPS with your mac pro. Please read on...
Having just concluded a rather detailed any lengthy post over in the power mac g5 forum with regards to loud buzzing noise from the power supply running of battery backup.
I recemmend reviewing the link below for the full and i think interesting read...
    Linked here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=665537&tstart=0
To sum it up it concluded that my model of UPS (Belkin) produces a simulated sine wave. I am unsure of technicals here, but this then makes the power supply in powermac G5's make a nasty electrical noise as the unit works to sort it out. What is ideal is a pure sine wave i understand.
The reason for my post was that i was concerned the noise was a sign of harm being done to my mac. No one has said either way yet that this noise is either just a nuisance and it something thats got to be lived or that its actually harming my machine.
Anyhow it turns out that the RS series from APC also makes the G5 powermac make a noise. And i am aware that Ned along with some others use the APC RS series with there mac pro's. What i am looking to find out is... Do you have a noise from your power supplys when running on battery backup with your new shiney mac pro's?
The APC smart ups series however does not make the powermac G5 make a noise this has been confirmed by several users. I guess this is because these models produce pure wave sine.
As you can see this has all got very complicated and over my head.
The reason for me coming into this forum and asking about noisy power supplys when using certain UPS is because shortly i will be switching to a Mac pro. And if the power supplys in these are different and dont make a noise when running under battery with certain APC Rs's and the new Dual form belkin units then i wont return my current belkin model in exchange for a APC smart ups. I will just live it for a short time whilst i own my G5 and just hope it wont do any damage if and when we have a power outage.
Thank you to anyone that can guide or assist me with this dilemma. Cheers Pob

    Pobster,
Switching power supplies (such as those used in computers) do not require a "pure" analog sine wave input; they are more than capable of running on PWM/stepped sine wave input. The noise from the power supply when running on power from a PWM output UPS does not indicate that damage is being done to your machine; it's a harmless side effect.
Some equipment will be damaged if powered via PWM input; items with compressors (refrigerators, air conditioners) definitely fall into this category, as well as some medical equipment and telecom equipment.
I live in an area with notoriously dirty power; a UPS is critical in my case (I'd argue that it is critical in any case, however). I've ran my equipment on UPSs for many years, and the price has dropped significantly. I've got one APC SmartUPS with pure sine wave output which was purchased for me by a client, but most of my equipment is running on UPS with PWM output. It's not uncommon for me to have 20-30 power events in a given day - most of them transient voltage drops or spikes; I've still got an old Sun Sparc 10 file server that's still chugging along.
A couple of interesting articles for your perusal:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051009043816537
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse-width_modulation
A quick google will turn up lots more information on the topic. APC used to have a white paper on their site which talked about this very topic.
Most manufacturers provide connected equipment insurance - tripp lite, for example, provides $250,000(US) coverage. I've never known anyone who actually needed to use this coverage - I certainly haven't .
In brief: A UPS with PWM output will not harm your computer; switching power supplies are more than capable of handling this. If the noise bothers you, look for a UPS with "pure sine wave" output - you will pay more for this feature; it's an aesthetic choice in this case.

  • Power Mac G5 Dual Core freezing

    Hi,
Everything works fine with my G5 with 4GB RAM, except one thing:
Sometimes when I work for a long time, my mouse justs freeze,
The red light near the RAM slots appears and the fans start being noisy ! (LED 7—Checkstop: red—contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider)
I reboot and all just works fine until the next freeze
I ran Hardware test and apple diagnotics many times but all the tests including the ram test passed successfully.
It happens like 1 or 2 time by day. I couldn't identify the cause or the frequency of the problem (maybe Eyetv usb box, or a spécific app that causes the computer freezing ??? !)
    Thanks for the help !
Power Mac G5 Dual Core 2,3 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Curiously - we have two new Dual 2.3 G5s and they exhibit this same behavior. Suddenly freezing - and not necessarily while we have a lot of apps running. iTunes is always going in the background though. I'll start monitoring the temps on these machines and we'll see what happens. Does anyone know of a menubar app that might display CPU temp on the fly? Could be useful if we see a spike in temperature and then a crash.
One notable thing though, when it does crash, it crashes hard. Everything freezes, the audio (since iTunes is usually running) begins to skip on the last section of the track it was playing, sort of like a skipping record - only much faster. It also appears to have happened to one of the machines last night while it was asleep. I came in the morning the the fans were going crazy - and yes, the little red LED was on. What does that mean?

  • Purchasing a new Boot drive  for Power PC Mac dual G5 2.7 GHz ( early 2005)

As I’ve mentioned I have Power MAC Dual G5 2,7 GHz( early 2005)
I’m doing “ erase and install” on my boot drive Caviar and starting from the scratch - Basically doing whole new setup with my music apps, sample libraries and back up.
To describe it little better - My plan is to move Caviar to second slot ( mostly will be used for I-tunes,documents,photos and maybe some back up) and purchase new boot drive.
All my audio and music samples I’m running from 4 bay ( sata ) exterior hot swap enclosure with Lycom card so my boot drive will be clearly for OS X and applications.
Now - I’ve gone through a big research and even though I have not really make up my mind about my purchase - here is what I’ve found out so far.
As a boot drive I’ve been considering following ( I’m adding my comments as well)
    1) My first pick was Hitachi T7K500 320GB SATA II HD 16MB Cache -
seemed to me like a very good choice for a boot drive since it has a great random access .But after reading review in “ AMUG reviews “ Using a Hitachi T7K500 320GB with a Mac Pro I was not that sure .Apparently They don’t recommend Hitachi T7K500 for internal Mac Pro usage since it is slower without using SATA host adapter. But that is Mac Pro - I have Dual processor so it might be different?
    Second choice was
    2) Maxtor MaXLine III 500GB or Maxtor MaXLine Pro 500 GB
here I’m not sure -some guys don’t really recommend this brand but in bunch of online reviews I’ve read it was mentioned as a very good choice for a boot drive .
I’ve been told that this drive is too noisy and too cheap which I think is not a bad thing though.
    And finally
    3) Raptor 74 GB or 150 GB
Everyone knows those drives are fast
Downside is that size is not very big ( just my OS X will be around 50 GB)
plus 150 Gig won’t work natively on my G5 without host card which would be another extra expense .
Maybe one more thing to add - I have not consider neither seagate drives (since random access speed is not that great) nor pairing any of those previously mentioned drives into raid 0 configuration .
So basically that is my selection.I’m trying to pick up drive which would work natively without PCI - X card and would be reliable and fast.( Only if I would have no choice - Than I would probably buy a host card )
Also I’m not sure whether for example in the case of hitachi ( or even other brands ) would be smarter to go with bigger size - maybe 400 or 500 GB for a boot since all drives getting slower as they get filled up.
I would really appreciate if anyone can give me a feedback as far as what drive would be the best choice in my case.
Thank you very much for your time
    Milan

OK - I'll try that one more time - second choice is Maxtor Maxline III 500 GB or maxtor maxline Pro 500 GB.

  • Powermac G4 DA Dual 533 - External FW HDD Size Limit

    Hi there,
    Power Mac G4 Dig Audio Dual 533 - OS 10.3.2 - 896 MB RAM.
I need space for Pro Tools files. Been living in the studio for 2 months, and suddenly have very little space left.
I want to get an external FW400 enclosure, and I see the following one that catches my eye from TigerDirect:
    Vantec NexStar3 Black 3.5" USB 2.0 / FireWire Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure - Item # V13-3256
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=21710 25&Tab=0&NoMapp=0
I want to put the largest hard drive I can get in that enclosure.
    Two possibilities:
    Western Digital / Caviar SE / 320GB / 7200 / 8MB / ATA-100 / EIDE Hard Drive
    or
    Maxtor / DiamondMax 21 / 320GB / 7200 / 16MB / ATA-100 / EIDE / RoHS / OEM / Hard Drive
You see any problems with that working on my system? Anybody have any personal experience with the drives or the enclosure? The enclosure gets good user reviews. I like that it doesn't have an exhaust fan (noise value), and that it's a sturdy aluminum enclosure. I tried the Ultra drive enclosures, and am disappointed in them. The fans die quick and they're noisy as heck.

    Hi-
You don't have to worry about drive size limits with externals.
I checked your link, but found no info on the enclosure's chipset. It is recognized that the Oxford 911(112) chipsets provide the greatest compatibility in firewire enclosures.
You might browse the housing selections at OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/External-Enclosures/
Hard drives are more personal preference, and the one's you listed are reputable brands. Might as well compare drives as well:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/3.5-IDE-ATA/
Best deal, though, are these "build to suit" externals. Even have bundled software, and can choose the drive size, and interfaces that you want:

  • Power mac G4 silver 2002 - very noisy

Could be everything, very noisy. To be honest is a nightmare to do anything for more than 10 minutes.
Can I reduce the db doing something?
    thank

    Hello Brauner,
Sorry to hear your Quicksilver is misbehaving.
Hold your hand to the metal surrounding the fan - both the case fan and the power supply and see if you can pick up a vibration. Holding a long, thin screwdriver - which acts as a stethoscope - will also work (as long as you don't drop it into the fan).
Dual processor QSs tend to run hot, which is not conducive to long life of power supplies. I fitted a slightly more powerful (and noisier) CPU fan by Evercool - EC6025H12CA - which keeps the CPU cooler and I presume the power supply, too. A slot fan might help, too, though I haven't tried it yet.
Good luck with the Quicksilver; I really like mine and have talked a half-dozen friends into what seems like a QS club.
    Jon

The computer stops responding occationally while installing Adobe CS2, Final Cut Pro 5. and others. Or when I leave it on for an hour, it freezes and the fans run very fast and noisy.
The log file has the following line at the end.
    KernelEventAgent[37]: tid 00000000 received unknown event (12).
I have reset the PMU according to Apple Support web site – and no difference.
When I search the web site, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302527 link says that we need to contact Apple service if LED light #7 is RED as my case.
It will cost me more than 300$ to send the unit back to the nearest Apple Service Centre.
There is the same question in Expert exchange - but to get answer, you have to pay and subscribe.
It seems that this problem exist for seveeral dual, quad G5s. Why can't Apple fix it and still selling those G5s. It's shameful what Apple have done to loyal Mac Users.

    Nick,
I know many G5 users who never had this error. Your machine is under a year old if it is a dual-core G5. You have a hardware warranty. I would call AppleCare and tell them your predicament and see if you can avoid having to pay that fee if your machine is under a year old or under AppleCare:

You don't necessarily have to go to the nearest Apple Center if you have an authorized service center nearby either. Though I would take this matter up with AppleCare by phone.
