Noisy fan 27inch 2011 imac

I have a mid 2011 27inch i5 desktop and the fan noise is so bad.. I've had 5 macs and they have all been
pretty quite..This thing is unbelievable. Had to have the HD replaced because it was making a grinding
noise, fixed now but the fan drives me mad.. took it to apple and they say this is normal.
$1800.00 for state of the art technology... having had a few imacs i would expext the same as what
i got last time, thats why i bought another one.. But this is deinitly not what i got last time ! !
I sit at this thing 10 hrs a day sometimes... i can't believe i piad 1800 bucks for something that makes
more noise than my air con in silent mode...
Same problem anyone??

It does not say that they can not be replaced, it say's that they need to be replaced with certian model Drives.
If there is no satisfaction with the service department, then escalate the problem to the store manager first and then to Apple Support if the problem goes unresolved.

  • REALLY noisy fan on 24" iMac

Hi. I got my iMac 24" September 2008. This year, or maybe late 2009, the fan started making small noises. Now, a week ago maybe, the fan is like a vacuum cleaner! I start my Mac, a minute or two later the fan is loud. I can hear that its going louder and louder when i turn it on. I've tried to reset the Systems Management Controller (SMC), turn it off and keep the power cable out for half an hour - hour.
I really hope someone can help me!

This design of Mac can get really dirty or dusty inside. You may need to have a tech clean it out for you if it is not too late for the bearing on that fan.
They replaced the display in my 17" Core Duo last summer and I was shocked at how much dust had gummed it up inside. The tech threw in a free cleaning. And I have a very clean home!

  • Trouble running hardware test on 07 iMac with noisy fan

    Hello
I have an 07 iMac with a noisy fan- I've tried vacuuming out dust from the back but want to avoid taking it apart if possible...
I read online I should run the hardware test, but since I am running Mavericks the Apple support advice is to run the original OS X install disc and restart (holding down D or Option+D)...
Long story short I got a replacement disc from Apple (I'd lost the original) but the iMac ejects it when I restart following the process above... could it be my bluetooth keyboard? Hopefully not since I no longer have the original hardwired one... or does anyone have any other ideas for either how to get to the hardware test... or fix the fan (without a third party app just stopping it)
    Thanks!

Try holding down the Option key to get the one time boot manager screen then select the AHT. Not sure as Apple moved it around on different install discs but it might be on the Applications discs and not the OS X discs.

    Hi Guys
I need your help on this. My 3 months old iMac (iMac 24inch 2.8GHZ Core 2 Duo Extreme) fans started making so much noise that is unbearable. They came on suddenly (you could see the wave of air) and even though I switched off the iMac for the 24 hours, when I turned it on, they noise is still on. The iMac works fine, but the noise is very very loud. The computer is in well ventilated room, so I dont know what is happening.
I bought it from apple.com and I dont want to go through all the drama of sending it for repair if there is a quick fix.
    Thank you for your time.

  • HT3964 my fan on my iMac is noisy

My fan on my iMac is noisy - any ideas how to stop it ?

What kind of noise? Rattling could be dirty and unbalanced.  Squeaky could be bearings starting to go.  Going at full speed indicates it's either overheating or it thinks it is overheating.  The latter can happen if the system software monitoring temperatures crashes and the fans automatically go into safe mode.  Restart the computer and see if it clears up, or more trouble shooting is necessary.
I'll have to let an iMac expert take over from this point since I have a desktop and it's easy to open up and clean parts.

  • Noisy fan iMac 27" i7 3.5 GHz

I've just purchased a new iMac 27" i7 3.5 GHz online from Apple and I'm really dissapointed level of noise produced by the fan (at idle). So much so that I had a replacement sent, which is just as noisy. It's not super loud but it is a clearly audible wispy sound in a quiet room (and noisier than my 2008 iMac).
I'm thinking of sending it back for a refund and either waiting for the problem to be fixed or waiting for the next Mac Mini to be released.
But I thought I'd check here first because I love everything else about this machine and going without a computer for a undefined amount time is going to suck. Is there anything that can be done to solve this problem? Have they always been like this or has this been introduced by a firmware update?

Are using your iMac in an above normal temperature environment? I ask because I am sitting here with my brand new 3.5 GHz i7 27" iMac and it doesn't make a sound, is cool to the touch after many hours of intensive use. So I think you will be waiting a  very long time for this to be "fixed" as I don't believe there is any problem to be fixed. The fact that you say two machines have shown the same behavior is interesting. Is there anything about your situation, the location of your system, the air circulation in the room, etc. that might influence the ambient temperature near the machine?

  • The fan of my imac suddenly stays turning and very noisy!

the fan of my imac sudddenly starts to turn, and very loudly. I can't stop it, unless I set off the Mac..What tot do?

These instructions have recenty been modified. They used to read hold the power button in for five seconds after unplugging. I'd try it both ways.

  • 2011 iMac not starting, then starting, and then not starting again?

    Hi,
I've asked this question at another forum, but I haven't gotten any feedback, so I thought I'd try here.
I have a 2011 iMac which I'm not really happy with at all, to be honest.
The most severe problem is that it refuses to turn on sometimes. It has actually only happened two times so far, with a few weeks in between.
I talked to Apple for over two hours yesterday. After a lot of troubleshooting, PRAM resets, (obviously error-free) diagnostics, etc, they still had absolutely no clue what the problem could be.
The first time it happened, the iMac had been disconnected from the power outlet for a week. Imagine trying to power on an iMac with the power chord unplugged. That's how it was.
After a lot of fiddling around, inserting and reinserting the power cable, and pressing the power button 40-50 times, it finally booted up. I then turned it off again, and it wouldn't power on once again. Then, it suddenly started working as normal, turning on every time.
I happened again yesterday. The exact same issue, despite the fact that it has been plugged into the power all the time. After my long support call with Apple, it was working as usual again, powering on as normal every time. There was this one time when I held in the power button for like 5 seconds, until I heard the fans running. I then released the button, and the fans stopped. Then it powered on when I tried again.
Rebooting always works, going to sleep and waking up always works, and it never powers off by itself once it's on. Trying a different power outlet makes no difference.
I really just want another iMac, or my money back, but I understand that this is the absolute last thing Apple will do.
All I kept hearing from the support reps were "call a service place". But what good is that going to do?
What if it dies again and I really can't get it to work no matter how many times I press the button? It seems to be ALL about pressing the button btw, doing anything else has any impact whatsoever.
If a technician tries to start it, it may start on the first attempt. Or the third. Or the twentieth. I have no idea, since there's no pattern, and nothing to go by.
The only real clue is that it's imposible to NOT get it to start after it's been running for around 15 minutes.
So, what should I do? Should I try to get it fixed/replaced/sold? Should I reinstall Lion (the guys at Apple actually told me to try that)? Should I just accept it and never shut it off (only sleeping/waking and rebooting)?
I would love to hear your thoughts.

Sorry, I forgot to mention - I was instructed to do that. Don't know if it helped or not, only time will tell.
I'm 100% certain that the problem will occur again. It could be in a few weeks, or months, or even years.

  • Mid-2011 imac and original apogee duet. . .no likey each other?

So I recently got a mid-2011 Imac with Mountain Lion.   Years ago I got an Apogee duet, a mac-specific firewire (400)-based audio interface for audio recording.    I'd been using it with my 2008 imac just fine.  When I hooked it up to this new one (today was the first time), I discovered that at reasonable input recording levels, I was getting some very nasty static-y/interference sounding mess.   It's got to be the imac/apogee combo because I had all the audio stuff turned off and unplugged. I was simply monitoring the input signal via Adobe Audition.     If you think it was noisy BECAUSE nothing was plugged in, it was just as noisy with a Sennheiser G2 wireless lav hooked up.      I have tried going directly from the duet to the computer with a firewire 400 to 800 cable.  I have the newest update for the Apogee/Maestro software for Mountain Lion.    Anyone have experience with this stuff?  Thanks.

    Hello,
    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

  • Noisy fan (or fan-like) sound coming from machine. Thoughts?

My macbook pro is from 2008 to start. I had the computer completely refurbished back in August 2011, though.
However, in the last two days, it has twice produced this impossible-to-miss noisy whirring/rattling sounds that sounds a lot like a very noisy fan. The first time, it last for about 5 seconds just as the computer was starting up after I'd left it closed and off all night (leaning against the wall). The second time, however, the computer had already been on for several hours, always upright, and just for some random reason started making the same noise. This time it lasted for a good 15-20 seconds.
Any thoughts on what could be causing this sudden noisiness? Whatever it is doesn't appear so far to be affecting the actual functions of the computer itself.
    Thanks!

    HI,
Probably a good idea to run the Apple Hardware Test just in case and make sure you have all your important files backed up to an external source.

  • Would a noisy fan be covered by the warrenty? Can the fan be turned off?

My iMac's fan has become worryingly noisey, can it be turned off, if so is that a danger?
Will it be covered by the warranty, it still presumably works, just very very noisy.

Hi, if the computer is under warranty or has AppleCare so is the fan.
You would be best served to do the SMC reset first if that fails to cure the noisy fan call AppleHelp or visit the local Genius Bar or Apple Approved Service Agent..
    http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/302002-reset-system-management-controller-sm c.html
I would also make sure you have everything backed up..before any service work is carried out..L

  • Has a noisy fan

What has caused my iMac to develop a noisy fan. It runs at full speed now, this has just started.

this sounds like its overheating. when it does this can you tell what graphics processor is in operation, you can do that by either using gfxCardStatus (a app that sits in the menu bar that tells you which gpu is in operation) or by going into the more info section of About This Mac and under display it should say which processor is in use at that time, either the AMD discrete GPU or the Intel Integrated one

  • Hot GPU diode and noisy fan - 3600rpm

After an hour my iMAC's GPU diode is running at 88° and the CPU fan is noisy at 3600rpm. I have taken it to an Apple certified reseller and they couldn't find anything wrong. Can anyone help suggest a reason why it is running hot and noisy?

Hello davemo73 I have the right the same problem, I have taken to an Apple certified support and they told me that is everything all right with my iMac, when I arrived in my home an surprise! the same issue... noisy fan and rpms too fast. Im really worried about, I dont wanna to change the logical board (60% of imac, too much expensive in my country, like a $1100,00 half cost of new machine.).
