Noisy G5 (Dual 2 Ghz)

After my G4 with a lot of nois and a new fan that doesn't work, I now have a G5.
But he makes nois too, when I want to start something he begins to rattle...:(
Some solution?
G5 Dual 2 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Happy Mac Man

If you open the silver side door (but leave the clear plastic deflector in place) and then open a program, does the "rattle" come from the rear of the G5, at the top?
If so, it is probably the hard drive accessing. Some drives are noisier than others, but if Disk Utility doesn't find any problems and the S.M.A.R.T. status is 'Verified' there isn't really much you can do about it...
This G5 dual 2 with 9 internal fans and another on the graphics card makes a noise, but it's not too bad.
Keeping the room cool will help keep the fan noise down.
If you have the '747' roaring fans, that's a different matter, and you should post again!

  • Quicksilver dual GHz upgrades for ProTools??

I have a Quicksilver dual GHz G4 that served me well under OS9 and Digidesign ProTools LE prior to version 7. ProTools is a recording application, and I use Digidesign's 002 "control surface" for recording, mixing and editing with PTLE.
Version 7 or ProTools LE requires OSX Tiger, and to insure a solid transition, I formated my hard drives and did a clean install of OSX Tiger and ProTools. Unfortunately, Digidesign states that the Quicksilver Macs are "not recommended" for use with v7 PTLE, and my Quicksilver machine is totally unstable now. Digidesign won't comment on why they are not recommended, but I'm wondering if there are any upgrades to consider before buying a whole new machine, or going back to OS9.
I have done a lot of testing, reformatting of drives, reinstalling software, but to no avail. As the Quicksilver ran quite well under OS9 with ProTools, I'm not sure if its a problem with OSX or the new version of ProTools. To run an older version of ProTools, I have to de-install the new version and jump through many hoops to re-authorize (via web sites and an iLok dongle) the software ware and other plug-ins for ProTools.
The ProTools 002 control surface is a Firewire device, and I wonder if the FW400 bus of the Quicksilver can't keep up.
There are mixed reviews about CPU upgrades, FW and ATA controller cards, but I'm wondering if these may offer some relief.
If anyone has any experience using a Quicksilver Mac with ProTools, or any upgrades, please chime in. I could really use a hand here.
    thanks in advance,

  • G5 Dual @ GHz Shuts down completely when using Compresor 2

Has anyone else encountered this? I was having this problem with Compressor 1.2 in Panther, and I thought upgrading to Tiger and Compressor 2 had solved it, but it has come back.
when I process a particularly intense video file to MPEG-2, no matter how I do it (from within FCP, QuickTime or Compressor) the system will do a hard shutdown.
Not a crash, but an actual power down.
Apple reps looked at this before, but could not replicate it. I never encountered this until Compressor came out.

Maybe your box is overheating. You could try (1) lowering the compression job priority in case OS X has trouble running it's fan control timely when there's compression to do, (2) altering the cpu performance settings from energy saver preferences, (3) putting your box into fridge or removing the warm blanket around it

  • PowerMac G5 1.8 GHz Dual (Buy April 2005) Graphics Cards?

I want to buy a new graphics card for my PowerMac 1.8 Dual GHz which a got in April of 2005. I have not made any improvments to the hardware at all. All I do know is that the Nvidia 6600 Upgrade on Apple.com will not fit into my computer slots. If someone can tell me out of this list, the ones that will fit into my computer. Thanks
One of the following graphics cards:
ATI Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition
ATI Radeon 9800 XT or 9800 Pro
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL or 6800 GT DDL
    NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT
    NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500
    PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   I don't know if I have PCI or PCI-X or PCI-Express ports.

Would you say ATI Radeon 9800 Pro is better than Nvidia 6800, in terms of both performance and price?

  • Planning ahead to replace beige G3

Hello all. I bought my beige G3 desktop machine refurbished in 2001 and still use it for many things. I am well aware that despite appearances to the contrary it is not immortal and one day will need replacing.
The one piece of software I really need to take account of only runs under classic (OS 9 now of course) and ideally needs to work on a machine that will boot natively into this OS. It is musical notation software and needs this in order to work with MIDI input.
I would appreciate greatly advice on the best machine to look to to plan a replacement. I have a very nice flat screen 19" monitor that I would ideally like to keep using (assuming that's possible) which is actually a PC monitor working with an adaptor.
In particular it would be useful to know what is the generally fastest/best regarded suitable machine, bearing in mind questions I have seen raised in some models about fan noise....and quite possibly other things I don't know about!
The rest of my set-up uses a Laserwriter via an Asante bridge, and ethernet to a laptop (this one!) and all the usual USB and broadband router stuff.
    Many thanks!
    Stephen

RE: LaserWriter 4/600 (which has ONLY AppleTalk/LocalTalk)-- if you have any Mac running Mac OS X version 10.5 or earlier on your Ethernet Network, you can have that 10.5 or earlier Mac "own" the printer and share it with the other Macs using Mac OS X Printer Sharing. But that older Mac must be on to print.
The Mirrored Drive Doors Macs transitioned to a very large fan at the processor heatsink that can be noisy with dual processors. There was one model that was "Education-only" (introduced later in response to the howling from schools that could not complete the switch-over to Mac OS X fast enough) with a single 1GHz processor that could still boot OS 9. It may be worth your consideration as the latest G4 model with acceptable noise. The dual processor generated more heat, so the big fan ran faster and the noise levels went up. The Mirrored Drive doors supports four Hard drives -- two on an ATA/100 Bus, two on an ATA/66 Bus, plus two full-sized Optical CD/DVD drives.
I advise anyone with a Mirrored Drive Doors model to install a PCI-slot cooler in the top slot and change to solid slot covers for the other slots. The one I favor has a built-in thermistor control. This improves cooling somewhat, to take the heat-stress off the top-mounted power supply. Enhanced cooling is especially important with many drives or hot graphics cards.
You get similar processor power but not as good (in terms of speed or number of drives supported) from the Quicksilver models. The first version offered 733 (with limited cache), 867 and dual 800 MHz processors. These models are probably subject to the 128GB maximum drive size.
The second series offered 800, 933, and dual 1 GHz processors. These models (and ALL Mirrored Drive Doors models) have the firmware that lifts the 128 GB drive size limit. Another alternative to get around the drive size limit is to install a PCI card for the drives (ATA, SATA, or SCSI).
And yes, when I say disappears in 10.5, I mean supported in all variants of 10.4 through 10.4.11.

  • FCP 5.1.4 no longer playing clips it used to play w/o rendering first

G5 2.7 Dual GHz PPC, 4.5 GB SDRAM, OSX 10.4.11
I haven’t used FCP 5.1.4 for quite a while. I digitized some home movie footage from miniDV directly into FCP 5.1.4. It plays back fine in the preview window. It plays fine if I open it up and play it from Quicktime v 7.6.4 (518.35). But when I put the FCP digitized clip in the timeline I get the red line indicating that it has to be rendered before I can see it play back in the canvas window. I tried to digitize new footage thru firewire directly into FCP with the same result – plays fine in the preview window and in QT. But it won’t play in the timeline / canvas window until I render it first. And the render file is twice the size of the original footage I digitized directly into FCP.
Also, playback is getting stuck on footage that used to play fine. The audio keeps playing alright, but the video gets stuck, then catches up and plays a bit, then gets stuck again, sometimes never coming back. If I export the file as a QT movie, the QT movie plays with the video getting stuck – I don’t know if it’s in the same places. But it makes exporting a waste of time as an option to “work around” the problem.
Did something change in FCP in the last year that I am not aware of? Like, maybe, FCP now upconverts / up-renders DV footage as HD footage as a default, or something like that? I used to just digitize 4:3 standard def footage into FCP, then drag it down into the time line, hit the space bar, and FCP would just play the files. Trim, delete sections, normal edits, and FCP would always play w/o rendering.
I don’t want to upconvert any of my standard def 4:3 home movies. I just want to digitize the footage thru / via DV, make some straight cuts, adjust low volume, put in some chapter markers, and send the edited home movies to Compressor so I can make DVD’s out of my home movies. I’m not even putting in transitions and FCP says I have to render the entire file from beginning to end!
I did add an iPhone to the scenario since I last used FCP. I noticed that the syncing that seems to go on constantly as a result of / related to the iPhone seems to reek havoc with FCP. So I shut auto-sync off. Now I have double everything in my iPhone again. But I’ll do whatever I have to in order to be able to use FCP to make DVD’s of all my old home movies.
I stopped using this USB 2.0 drive. The last time I tried to digitize something it was on an internal hard drive – separate from my boot drive, and not a partition of my boot drive, a separate internal hard drive, which should be even faster than the firewire 400 hard drives I used to use.
Please tell me if there is something I have to unselect to make FCP 5.1.4 just stay in Standard Def 4:3 so I can just edit my home movies without having to use 166% more hard drive space and wait for rendering on most everything I do.
If my session is corrupt and I have to start all over in a new session, please let me know whether there is a way to export the chapter markers that I’ve already painstakingly inserted on the home movies I’ve already struggled through, so I don’t have to re-figure, re-locate, re-name, and recreate them again. Even a printout of the chapter marker location times and the names of the chapters in simple text format would be better than having to recreate each and every one of them from scratch all over again.
    Thank you.

As far as I can tell, they are not different, except for:
Aud Rate: 48001.8Hz on the older clip
Aud Rate: 48001.9Hz on the new clip
I cannot explain why the sample rates are not 48000 exactly. I didn't try to digitize them at the rates they digitized. The first, older clip came off of a miniDV tape via firewire from a JVC SR-VS30 miniDV / S-VHS deck. The second, new clip was digitized from the original BetaMax recording, in real time, through the same JVC SR-VS30 miniDV / S-VHS deck configuration, FCP set to DVDVCPRO50, the standard setting for DV that was the preset, that I have always used, using the miniDV deck as a "non-controllable device" source, recording into FCP in real time "Capture Now". • Command+1 shortcut doesn't work in iTunes 7?

During the years of having iTunes 5 & 6, I used to have those keyboard shortcuts like command+1, command+2 to show the main window of iTunes and Equalizer. This function is really helpful when you choose one song to play, then close the iTunes window to save the space on desktop, then use command+1 to show the main window of iTunes again when you need it. Really convenient.
But since I updated the iTunes 7 yesterday, I sadly found out that the key stroke combination of command+1 doesn't work anymore. Now every time when you need the iTunes window to show up, you have to click the iTunes 7 icon on the dock again. And same as the command+2 for equalizer. Since iTunes 7 erased the equalizer icon on the main pane in the corner right below, this is really not so fast as before to get those windows showed when you need them.
This issue is really unlikely to happen because I checked the new help topics of iTunes 7, there still are the entries of command+1/2 in the help topics, but they just do not work!!! Is that a new bug of iTunes 7?
Anyone has any idea about solving this problem? Or did anyone found the new keyboard shortcuts? Thanks in advance!!!

i am about to purchase a new 15" macbook pro and adobe cs3.
has anyone experienced problems or issues with cs3 running on their macbook pro?
    thanks!

    Hi,
I have purchased CS3 and I have a G5 Tower and a MBP dual 2 core (bought it 2 months ago)
Let me tell you that I am very unpleased with CS3 on both machines.
On the G5 it is 10 times slower than CS1 for some reason it takes a lot of processing power and RAM wich the G5 does poorly.
On the MBP it processes fine but I only have 1 Gig of RAM and I feel that I don't have enough. Plus it doesn't help that a laptop HD is slower at opening files so it really makes it look like it runs slow...I should of bought the 24in imac instead due to the fact that it doesn't cost 900$ to buy a extra 2 Gigs of RAM
    and the HD is faster

  • Standard MBP operating temperature 60C - normal?

After using my 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM, 7200rpm 100GB HDD MacBook Pro for 30 minutes or so, just running iTunes, Camino and nothing else, CoreDuoTemp reports that the temperature is (on average) 65C. The laptop is very warm to the touch, especially in the top left. If I really push the machine so that it's running at 2.16GHz for a few minutes then the temperature can reach nearly 80C!
Is this normal for these CoreDuo chips or should I get on the phone to Apple and start asking for a replacement?
And yes, I have "the whine" too but I'm slightly less concerned about that right now.
    Thanks in advance.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

it is strange. some hotter than others.
we never got an ibm G5 powerbook because of the heat issues. just imagine what the heat a G5 powerbook would produce. my 2.0 dual ghz sensors report the idle temp on those with huge fanse and heat syncs at 80 F to 100 F. with a heavy load of LP7 or FCP they get upwards of 150-180 F. about the same as the core duo.
I personally wish i could have a cooler notebook, but i don't think of these computers as laptops. more so of a really slick 1" thick desktop replacement. you definately need some type of stand between the desk, lap or whatever you are sitting the computer on.
I deal with T60's all day long at my job, and they get warm, but they are way thicker, made of dense plastic and rubber. they have one big fan with two vents on the back left, and the battery is on the very back of the unit not in the middle of the of the computer. all which are factors for heat dispensal.
enjoy your notebook. if you get worried about it take it in for a look at the apple store.

  • Using ethernet at gigabit speed

    Hi All,
I'm awaiting delivery of a Mac Pro 3.0 dual GHz machine. I would like to have this communicate with my Power Mac G5 dual 2.5 GHz machine using gigabit ethernet, and would also like to be able to connect to the Internet from either machine. I have DSL service. Right now my DSL modem feeds into my old Farallon ethernet hub, and TCP/IP addresses are automatically assigned. I also have a couple of ethernet printers, an old G3 Mac, and a non-gigabit-capable PC, all of which I want to keep hooked up (about 8 ethernet ports should do it). So here are my questions:
    1. Do I need an 8-port gigabit ethernet ROUTER, or will a gigabit ethernet switch do? If I get the latter, will I have to assign TCP/IP addresses manually, or will the DSL modem do that for me?
    2. Must I use CAT 6 cables to accomplish this?
    3. I'd also like the older computers (the G3 and PC) to be able to access the Internet. Will routing them through the same switch or router as the G5 and Mac Pro slow everything down?
    Thanks,
    Peter
Power Mac G5 and Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Some DSL modems include a Dymanic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) server and some do not. If your modem includes a DHCP you need only purchase a switch. If your modem does not have a DHCP you will need to purchase a router. You may not operate with multiple DHCP's on the same network. If you purcahse a router and your modem has a DHCP you must dissable one of them.
I am not sure that category 6 cable is an absolute necessity. If wiring distances are short and the connectors are well made, 1gb/s may work over cat 5e. Of course the connection from the switch/router to the modem and the Internet will be limited by the modem connection, probably 100mb/s, but your LAN devices with 1gb/s connections will be able to talk to each other at 1gb/s.
1gb/s is downward compatible with 10mb/s and 100mb/s

  • Fan & Power Supply Replacement Kit from 2003

    Hi All,
I was so excited to finally retire the G4 500 and replace with a shiny used G4 1.42 Dual. Unfortunately, I never botherd to learn about the "WIND TUNNEL" effect.
I know Apple offered a free Fan and Power Supply Replacement Kit back in 2003 that is no longer available (through Apple), but surely some wise Capiltalist Mac Reseller out there must be offering the same solution for a handsome fee.
    Can anyone offer a URL?

    Hi
I could be wrong, but I was under the impression the original MDD G4s suffered from the worst noise and Apple addressed the issue as best they could in the FW800 G4s (including the dual 1.42) and the rereleased MDD 2003 G4.

  • Problem updating iPod software

When I open iTunes with my video iPod connected I get this dialog: "Some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPod because your iPod software is old. Go to the Summary tab and click Update...." etc. When I go to the Summary tab the Version selection says "your iPod is up to date". I'm using iTunes 7.02 on a G5 dual ghz. Software Update finds no iPod or iTunes software updates for me. Apple tech support told me to "restore" the software but I really don't want to go through that. Is there another option?

Just to make sure you understand, tech support is
asking you to restore the software on the iPod, not
the computer, right. It's not a big deal and won't
    take that long.
OK, here's what solved it for me without a complete restore and maybe it will help someone else who encounters the same issue: I clicked the "restore" button but when the "are you sure?" dialog came up I clicked "cancel"--the update button then became available--I clicked it and upgraded the iPod software--evidently it was NOT the latest version even though iTunes said it was up to date.

  • WiFi Problems w/ OS X 10.4.11 and Speedport W 502V DSL Modem/Router

We just moved to Germany again, so went to Deutsche Telekom (DT) for Internet/phone access. They sold us a Speedport W 502V DSL Modem/Router with manuals--all in German, as DT does (DT offers NO support in English; some would argue they offer no customer support at all).
Babelfish and I managed to configure a late-model eMac, G4 PowerBook and two iPhones with the DSL router, with pretty good success (sometimes we have intermittent Internet connectivity). Then our household goods were delivered and we unpacked and set up the G4 dual-GHz tower. So...the G4's Airport (not Airport Extreme) "sees" the WLAN and the https://speedport.ip site "sees" the IP address of the G4, but the G4 can't join the network, no matter what I try. It's to the point that I think it's something painfully obvious that I'm missing and I must be too far in the weeds...so now I need fresh eyes on the problem.
I have no computer connected to the Speedport, and wouldn't have thought that was the problem because the other non-physically-connected computers are using the WLAN network. Thanks for any help!

    hi kathryn
did it have to be the Telekom, by all means??
anyway, first of all a link to a video where a german comedian writes a letter to steve jobs demanding he chose any carrier but the DTAG for the iPhone distribution in germany - really funny!
    http://bit.ly/4B4OdQ
OK, I´m currently downloading the speedport manual from their website and will look through it, in order to see if there´s something in there..
as a first guess I´d try looking at the wireless prefs of that speedport box. I guess it supports by default 802.11a/b/g, whereas the G4 only does 802.11b (the "normal" airport). Try selecting only the 802.11b portion from the speedport (that makes networking somewhat slower for airport express computers, but shoudn´t be a problem since it´s still at least as fast as basic DSL service (11MBit vs 2 or 6 MBit)
    cheers
