Noisy imac G5 and CPU settings

Hi All,
I just wanted to put forward the symptons of my imac G5. Due to noise I run the imac at the reduced CPU setting to avoid the noisy fans but lately it seems to have started getting louder and its a little bit annoying. I would love to run it at the highest CPU setting but the fans go mental but it does improve performance, I would like to think that I could be getting the full 2ghz power from the machine.
I have tried cleaning the machine inside and out and also reset the PRAM but still no joy. I wonder if anybody has any suggestions on this, I appreciate that this topic has come up in the past.

Imac 27 runs hot as ****, won't sleep, and cpu runs wild in w7

I have been having audio issues with the imac 27. plugging headphones or speakers causes cpu to run crazy, the mic in the triband trrs jack does not work, and the imac runs hot, and will not go into power saver mode.
When I came in I found my nephew who was listening to some music on the imac, and I felt the back top of the imac and it was hot as ****. I almost burned my hand. I realized then that he had plugged his headphones in.
Unplugging the headphones or speakers can solve some of these problems.
But, this is not an acceptable fix.
Please contact Apple and urge them to fix these sound card issues.
If anyone does not have these problems in w7 with the imac 27 even after the latest bootcamp and imac updates, let us know right here. I think this affects every one of the late 2009 imacs and maybe some earlier ones too running windows 7.
Here's the post I recently ran on the headphone jack issue.
Not only does the cpu run crazy but the imac 27 gets very, very hot. Since I unplugged the headphones, it runs much, much cooler.
Certainly, some Mac engineers should take care of this problem, it seems it is universal on all the imac 27's and from what I gather, the smaller screened cousins too.
Also, we certainly want a stereo mix option for audio in or out, or what is called "what you hear" or wave out. Imac is supposed to be much geared to multimedia apps.
Finally, the mic jack part of the trrs set up MUST be fixed! A lot of manufacturers are going to headset combo jacks as they call them, mic in and stereo out on the same tribanded plug. But, the old single jack for mic in and single jack for stereo out are two tiny parts of the hardware and super inexpensive for the manufacturer. Why in the **** to go to the "advanced" triplug if the **** thing doesn't work.
Mac has a great reputation. I hope they remedy these problems right away.
Anyone whose imac 27 or 24 whose headset plug is working correctly. Let us know! I don't think anyone's is, but I think that few people understand that their cpu is running so much faster with the plug in, plus few even understand the combo jack and the triband, or trrs audio jack! Out of 4 audio technicians I talked to, not one of them knew what a trrs jack was or that you even have a mic in jack as part of the headset jack!
When I told one senior that it worked on the Mac side, he didn't believe for a while, thought my sound might be recorded from the onboard mic, but I proved it to him by tapping iaudibly on my iphone mic headset and and it showing up in garage band clearly and listening to big difference in audio.
As for a usb audio adapter, I am in a neon light environment and find that those adapters are more sensitive to electrical interference. Besides I want to use the headset jack as it was meant to be used!

Again, if anyone using an imac 27 and windows 7 64 or 32 doesnt have these problems, let us know! We are all anxious for a fix!

Yes, I have been dealing with this problem since early January. I just can't believe that apple would not have the necessary driver for the sound card in the Imac 27! That's like trying to run a race and not bothering to tie your shoes! How can they not have something as basic as the sound connections working???
I was encouraged to buy a top of the line imac 27 because Apple had told us that bootcamp would enable Windows users to use the machine just as if it were a native windows machine, then they don't give us the **** drivers to use the trrs mic jack. And you can't use the external speakers without the cpu going wild and heating up like a pot bellied stove.
This is really disheartening and now I am really thinking I made a big mistake. I wouldn't mind migrating to Mac gradually, but I have lot of scientific and other programs that require windows. At this rate there will be thousands of other mac buyers who will never make the same mistake again.
As you can see I am quite angry about this, and getting more angry with each day Apple ignores every imac purchaser who expected to use Windows on the machine! Is the software for a sound card driver that difficult?
Having a computer which doesn't have sound that works correctly, is like having a car without seat, you can still drive it but isn't very **** comfortable.

ISight and noisy iMac G5

Hi there.
I'm thinking of getting an iSight but I have a very noisy iMac G5. The fans are loud and it makes a whining noise too. (Long story but Apple say there's nothing wrong with it.)
How good is the iSight at filtering out background noise like this?

I tried changing my password thinking I may have been hacked but it comes back saying wrong username and/or password. I have started the 2 way verification but nothing seems to work. Can I share color profiles and distiller settings with all user accounts on my imac?

Everyone in our studio is on OSX 10.8.3 with adobe cs6 (not creativecliud version).
I have installed color settings and distiller settings on to the macs under the employees user profile.
All the machines also have a general user profile which anyone can use (setup mainly for use by freelancers).
Is there a space on the macs where i can install the color profiles and distiller settings so that all user accounts have them set up?
At the moment i am having to go into each user account on each machine and do it manually.
Also once i have installed distiller settings in one user account I can't install them on subsequent users.
I have tried placing the files in the
library/applicationsupport/adobe/color/
library/applicationsupport/adobe/adobepdf/settings
and
user/library/applicationsupport/adobe/color/
user/library/applicationsupport/adobe/adobepdf/settings
any help would be much appreciated.

In that case, assuming your wife's XP User Account can access the D: drive as well, you don't have to bother with the To share your music with other accounts on the computer section of that article. That's already taken care of.
Just log into her account and head directly to the To listen to another account's music files section and follow those instructions.
If I had to emphasize one step to keep from stuffing it up, it would be:
4. Deselect the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library file" option.
("Deselect" being a fancy way of saying "uncheck")

Tweak the balance between fan speed and CPU temperature / Dell M6400?

I have a Dell Precision M6400 17" laptop. It runs really well on Arch, but is a bit noisy. It has always been noisy, btw, but I recently noticed that the CPU fan was blowing a lot of air even though the CPU temperature is lower than 70°C. I also have a macbook air, and its CPU runs at 70°C all the time, which seems to be normal. I would like my m6400 to behave similarly, and I'm sure someone here know how to change that

When I start the laptop, its CPU fan stays at its minimal speed only for 1 or 2 minutes, then increases its rotation speed to a second level. It reaches it maximal speed only under heavy load, when the CPU reaches >80-95°C. I would rather let the CPU run a bit hotter before the fan starts to blow: let's say the fan could enter its intermediary speed between 70°C and 85°C instead of 55-80°C, and blow at is its maximum speed beyond that.
I checked the Fan Speed Control wiki page, but lm-sensors is not able to show me the status of the fans. Any idea ?

PS: the temperature of the GPU is not reported by sensors, and nvidia-settings reports around 60°C. Its dedicated fan is very quiet.

I'm in the same situation from at least 1 month ( INTEL CORE 2 EXTREME X9100, 3.06GHz with 8GB ram, one solid state disk 128 GB, and one sata disk 500GB)
My dell M6400 has dual boot: ubuntu and windows7. The fan works a lot and continuosly in both environment and this is the reason because I have doubt that the origin of the problem is in hardware problem?

Noisy iMac 20"

Hi there !
I am enjoying my new iMac 20" since the last two months. Recently (one week ago), it began to become a little bit noisy.
Nothing horrible, but you can notice a little noise (sounds like a fan) I only used to hear when the CPU load was high for a long time (Google Earth, movie editing...). But now, the noise is continuous, and starts when the computer powers on. I checked the activity, and the CPU is still at 0.00%. This is the kind of noise you cannot hear if, for instance, someone is talking near you, but you will notice it if you are in a quiet room.
It is not the standard noise of my iMac, which used to be an absolutely noiseless computer.
I tried a SMC reset (unplug the cables...), but it didn't solved the problem. I noticed on other forum that some guys had exactly the same issue. I would really appreciate some help, because I am getting worried something is going wrong...

The do it yourself repairs that were allowed on the first generation iMac G5 are not allowed on the iMac Intel, and would not likely be useful if they were, since the machines are so different. Thanks to the Intel processor, iMac Intels don't generate anywhere near the heat as did the G5s.
Rather than planning anything major to try and achieve a fix, it seems to me that since it's such a minor noise, your approach should be to take minor steps such as those you already did (SMC reset, Hardware Test, and disk repair from booted install disc). I'm sure at some point you also must have repaired permissions from the internal version of Disk Utility, as well.
Additional small steps to try might be:
1. PRAM reset
2. return to the original RAM followed by a second PRAM reset
3. remove the latest installed third party software such as "Microsoft Office:2004" followed by disc repair from booted install disc and yet another PRAM reset

[865PE/G Neo2 Series] Memory timings and power settings anyone?

I'm not very good with computers, so I've just played around with the timings on my memory, but have not found one stable setting as of yet.
The memory is brand new and I've tested it for errors on my brothers computer and there's nothing wrong there.
Intensive harddrive usage, dvd playing and intense downloading while listening to music are sure ways to crash my system. "..........Not less or equal" is the most common error message, but there are
many many more.
Oh, maybe I should point out that overheating's not an issue, cause I've good fans and run my computer without sidepanels.
I also like to say that I have the first generation of p4 with ht and 533fsb.
I'm sure there's something I forgot to mention but here below I'll paste the system summary that Sandra gave me.
Would be forever grateful if someone could help me out with the memory timings and power settings for my board. Setting it to "auto by spd" gives me a very unstable system, so no avail there.
I'm running the mem at 2.70 and sometimes at 2.65, since these two settings seem to be the ones with least crashes.
The Memory installed are 4*512mb ,kingston 512 kvr333x64c25 pc2700

Danny: 1. Yes, I've put my memory in my brothers computer, and ran memtest there, and it came out ok, but on mine it crashes almost instantly.
2. Yea, I have 2 fans blowing into the case and one out, so airflow is good, cpu is also cool and seems to be happy ;-)

I purchased a used 2008 iMac. And although the previous owner said he deleted all of his information his iCloud account is still the primary. I don't have a clue about what to do about it. I signed him out and logged in with my info, but still no go.

Before buying a second-hand computer, you should have run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, whichever is applicable.
The first thing to do after buying the computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
1. If you don't own another Mac
a. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
b. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
c. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
2. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
3. Partition and install OS X
a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
          OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
          The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
          You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
4. Other issues
a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

My iMac crashes and reboots 9/10 times when Iog off an account. I looked at the Console for a log but I am not sure what I am looking for. What is the best way to try to find what is causing this?

I have an issue where my iMac crashes and reboots 9/10 times when I log my wife's account off. I'd like to get it resolved as it is very annoying. We switch between accounts all the time and everytime it crashes I lose a bunch of info from my account. Can anyone help me understand how to fix this issue?
After the reboot a window tells me that my system has recovered from a seriour issue (sounds much like Window$ to me...) and a crash report is show:

If you think getting your web pages to appear OK in all the major browsers is tricky then dealing with email clients is way worse. There are so many of them.
If you want to bulk email yourself, there are apps for it and their templates will work in most cases...

What is the CPU usage of X and cpu temp on your Arch?

I just installed the new arch 2009 02. Everything seems to be perfectly out of box, I have lxde DE.
But I noticed that in idle X is using around 2~3% cpu compared to below 1% in the old Arch I had before. It seems there is a little lag in the desktop experience, not obvious though, but not as responsive as my old Arch. Also the cpu temperature under lm_sensors gives me 43 constantly compared to 39 in my old Arch?! This is not some random sample of temperature, I constantly monitored it to realize it indeed runs hotter.
Also, when I open one mplayer, it uses 40% cpu + 20% for X. If I open 2 mplayer, fan will go noisy and cpu hit full and both videos become choppy! This never happened in my old Arch. I search the forum for quite a while, but have not found exactly the reason.
Some help or information? Greatly appreciate it.:D

Hmm interesting. How old was the "old arch" you are talking about?
Because if it was quite a while ago that you ran Arch and recorded those temperature readings, I might wonder if your hardware is aging or dust is gathering inside your computer case, decreasing air flow and increasing temperature.
My laptop also runs almost constantly around 43 degrees and about the same at X idle. This seems normal to me though.

Issue with HOST "metric and policy settings"

Hi All,
I have a OMS and EM Reporsitory installed on a linux machine I have connected four agents(4 hosts) to this grid control. For one perticular host I could not see any predefined metrics. The steps I followed are I have opened a host and went to "Metric and Policy Settings" and there I could not see any predefined metrics like Log file patteren match metrics and CPU utilization metric etc. For checking I have access "All Metrics" option there I can see all predefined metrics but their "collection Schedule" set to Real time-only. I think this is reason why I am not able to see these metrics in "Metric and Policy settings" for customization. How can change the Collection Schedule of these metric. This case is only for that perticular host other hosts are fine and showing metrics and allowing me to customize thresholds values.
As someone suggested I stopped and cleared the state of the agent and then started the agent again but the problem is not solved. Please suggest me a solution.

You could create a MONITORING TEMPLATE of the metrics you want to collect and base it off of a host that has the Metric and Policy Settings SET and apply it to this perticular host.
Have you checked Setup> Management Pack Access> for HOSTS?

Connecting iMac 24" and HP 4MV

Just got a new iMac 24" and have it connected to my wireless router as well as my trusty HP 4MV. The machine sees the HP 4mv and it's selected in the printer window but will not print to it. I downloaded and installed most recent driver from HP site (updated in 2008, I think). What do I need to do to make this connection work?

So if I understand correctly you have a cable/DSL modem connected to a wired/wireless router. The computer and the printer connect to the router via Ethernet cable. You are not trying to print wirelessly.
Open Print & Fax preferences. Delete the printer entry for the HP-4MV. Now, there are some steps involved here that I cannot tell you. You will have to configure your printer's TCP/IP configuration, and I don't know how that's done. You will need to consult the printer's manual to get these instructions. Your router's DHCP configuration assigns IP addresses within some range. For example 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.199. Whatever the range is for your router you must provide an IP address for the printer that is within that range. A good choice is midway. In addition to the IP address for the printer you must configure a Gateway IP address and a subnet mask. These can be found by opening Network preferences and getting them from the settings of your Ethernet port. For the previous example the Gateway would be 192.168.0.1 and the subnet mask would be 255.255.255.0. After you get the printer configured open Print & Fax preferences.
Click on the [+] button to add a new printer. When the configuration window opens click on the IP icon in the toolbar. Set the Protocol drop down menu to LPD. Fill in the Address field with the IP address configured for the printer, e.g., 192.168.0.50. You can assign a Queue name of choice of leave the field blank. I usually assign a simple name such as HP4MV. If you assign a name use only alpha or numeric characters. No punctuation other than the underscore. Don't use spaces and keep the name to no more than 11 characters. Unix can be hard to please.
From the driver drop down menu locate the printer drive for the HP-4MV, select it and click on the Add button. Oh, be sure the printer is turned on during all this.
