Noisy Transitions

There seems to be a new bug with the 7.2 update, such that audio transitions applied to the beginning of a clip will produce a very loud buzz, but only when you play from before the start of that clip.  If you start playback at the beginning of that clip, it seems to work fine.  It also does not seem to affect audio transitions between clips, or at the end of clips.
I'm seeing this using AVCHD media on Windows 7.

Also experiencing this with wav files, 16bit/44k and 24bit/48k (haven't tried others). This also affects my renders, but manifests with a grinding stutter sound rather than the buzz usually.
Also, this has started causing audio to totally mute after a buzz. I have a Dynamics audio affect applied with the compressor and limiter sections enabled. The master meter (Audio Track Mixer panel) reads about -295 dB. Clicking to bypass "AGOn/Off" (even though it is already disabled in the Dynamics effect's interface) gives me audio again, but it doesn't remove the buzzes.
I can also get audio back by disabling the Limiter, either from the dropdown control on the Audio Track Mixer panel or by openning the effect's settings panel and unchecking the box for the limiter. This also doesn't remove the buzzes, but they do seem to be amplified by the compressor's MakeUp setting, so I'm guessing the buzz is added before it hits that part of the signal chain.
I don't know how much they are connected, but I hope this helps.

  • .mov files playing very "noisy"

hello. I have my website, which has several .mov files, which play individually. Certain ones seem to playback very "noisy" and distorted. The original file seems fine when i play via quicktime, but when you watch online, it doesn't look nearly as good.
    Here is the site www.coutroulis.com
then go to "spots" and watch the first two.
    What am i doing wrong?
    thanks in advance

Me again nick, but on the video quality - btw, I really like ur work - I was struck by http://web.me.com/coutroulis/Nikos_site/neulasta.html, which is exhibiting the same behavior as some QT files being exported from FCS 3 here in the studio, using either QT or Compressor engine. And that would be the de-interlacing artifacts on fast moving changes, as with transitions, sails flapping, flower petals falling etc.. I have not figured out why the "noise" appears yet in just certain HD projects, but what we found was that after we uploaded to youtube (and all of our stuff goes there with the rest of the garbage), that artifact went away. That was a case of "garbage in, amrita out." It also goes away (somewhat) when we burn to DVD. But the artifact only popped up after we certified FCS3 on Snow Leopard. Now everyone is shaking their heads. Perhaps this is related...

  • Trigger not responding & extremely noisy acquisition

    I have constructed a
    - N channel
    - N Samples
    - Analog Triggered
Data Acqusition system. The program was working fine except that the singals were unsually noisy.
So I replaced a regular ribbon cable with a shielded one. However when doing this I did not turn off the computer.
Now the board does not trigger with the regular trigger pin(TRIG1). I checked the impedence of the pin and found that it was really low.
Does this mean that the pin is damaged?
I tried to use TRIG2 but it works sometimes and not at other times.
The other analog input channels seem to be working fine.
The unusual amount of noise also remains. (Which cause the acquisition to trigger even when there is no signal and hence is very an
    noying)
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Thank you for contacting National Instruments.
PFI0/TRIG1 and PFI1/TRIG2 should operate in the same fashion. You should be able to implement a digital trigger using either connection. A digital trigger will fire when an edge is detected on a particular pin. You can configure a rising or falling edge trigger. The trigger input accepts a TTL level signal which means if you have a rising edge trigger configured, the trigger will fire once the voltage changes from 0V to at least 2V. If this transition occurs the trigger will fire. Therefore, if you have noise spikes on your trigger signal that are large enough to trigger your acquisition, you will need to add some type of filter to remove the high frequencies of the noise. This can usually be acc
omplished with a simple single-pole RC filter.
If you feel confident that your PFI0/TRIG1 pin is damaged, you can return your board to be repaired. However, in most cases you should be able to get by using either PFI1/TRIG2 or one of the other six PFI lines.

  • Noisy Dissolves

i built a slide show in iMovie HD. Stills, no Ken Burns. Used 2:00 Overlap transition between most of the shots. The inital photo is a "fade in" transition from black. On one other dissolve I used "cross dissolve, maybe 2:25." All looks fine in iMovie, even played to video monitor. When I burned using iDVD, there was "video noise" on the initial fade in and the one cross dissolve. The other transitions were OK. Changed cross dissolve to overlap and shortened it. That reduced, but not eliminated noise. With initial fade-in, I shortened it, made it overlap, went back to fade in, shortened it more - but that still has noise on subject's face no matter what I try. This is only noticeable when I go to iDVD.
Got any suggestions? I'm considering purchasing $99 Toast 7 - does that use superior compression?

I eliminated the "cross dissolve" and replaced it with a shorter (2:10 rather than the initial 3:00) "overlap." I think that tranisition will be livable.
One annoyingly noisy dissolve remains. At the beginning of the piece, I come out of a title over black and insert a "fade in" (now reduced to 00:24) to a still photo (from iPhoto) that's a head and shoulders shot of my mother (caucasian) wearing a mostly white dress.
Got a suggestion for an alternate transition that might burn better on iDVD.
This is such a simple, typical iMovie/iLife/iPhoto/iDVD that I can't believe I'm getting this result. Maybe I'm being hypercritical since I work in the business, but I don't believe this wouldn't be noticeable to the layperson's eye.

  • Dip to Black Video Transitions

I have a problem with the "VIdeo Transitions/Dissolve/Dip to Black". That is, the sequence after rendering played on Premiere CS3 looks fine, but once built with Encore into a folder, and viewed on the computer and on a TV, the transitions are not smooth, they look "noisy", or rather the passage to or from the black is "blochy" not smooth.
Your input as to how I can remedy this problem will be greatly appreciated.

    OK everybody,
I have toiled with this problem, bult on disk, on image then on disk via ImgBurn, according to the advise I was given, could not get rid of this problem. Then I went back to Premiere, I created a black slide and used cross-dissolve just in case....I searched the Premiere forum as well the Encore forum, could not locate any similar problems.....I tried different methods, but whenever a "black" is involved I do not get smooth transitions. Can somebody give me a clue please All my clips are DV avi captured in Premiere, all the slides are made via Photoshop NTSC-preset.
I have a problem with the dip to black transition on my computer and on the DVD, although the movie created with Premiere CS3 plays fine on my computer.
The slides are fine, they don`t flicker, cross-dissolve is very smooth, it is only the dip to black in any shape or form that is not smooth. Maybe the word "flicker" is inappropriate, pardon my English, I don`t know how else to say it. It is just that the transition to and from black is not smooth, all else is perfect.
I will appreciate any clues, ideas, comments or whatever else...
    Thanks

  • Accuracy of the frequency reading - too 'noisy' reading

    Hi,
I am measuring frequency of revolution = rpm of a camshaft.
I am using method 1 and method 3
My card is 6221 with 80Mhz timebase.
The TTL pulses come from IRC mounted on the camshaft.
If I switch the IRC to 3600 pulse per revolution I would expect the reading error to be at 3000rpm max 7rpm (see calc bellow)
    Err=fx*fx/(fk-fx)
    fx= FreqCam*ppr=3000/60*3600=180e3Hz
    fk=80e6Hz
    Err=406Hz=7rpm
So why does my signal has so much of noise? See picture. The amplitude of the noise for method 1 is around 400rpm and for method 3 150rpm. For now I use moving average filter but I want to know what is going wrong.
    Thanks

The width of the pulses coming from the IRC is going to have more variance than the pulses coming from your function generator (the 7 RPM error that you calculated assumes an ideal TTL signal at a perfectly consistent frequency).  Variance in the signal itself would explain why method 1 (inverse of a single period) is more "noisy" than method 3 (inverse of the measured time for a specified number of cycles).  Method 3 is essentially just averaging multiple consecutive period measurements together before inverting to obtain frequency.
The measurement from the function generator looks pretty good.  With an ideal 180 kHz input you should expect just the two possible measured frequencies:
        80 MHz / 445 = 179775
        80 MHz / 444 = 180180
It looks like an extra pulse of the timebase was counted during one of the periods that we would have expected 445 pulses, giving a measured frequency of of 179372 (80 MHz / 446).  The extra pulse may have been counted if it occurred while the input signal was transitioning between .8V and 2.2V.  Something like this:
So, I think the noise that you're seeing with the IRC is just the variance in the output of the IRC. The more accurate reading on the function generator confirms that the card is performing adequately.

  • How can I select just the clips, or just the transitions?

If I have a timeline with 50 or more clips (or still shots, in my case) with cross dissolves between each one, I would like to select just the clips, or just the transitions, but not both. How do I do this?
Why? I am creating a video with hundreds of stills and a few video clips, and occasiionally need to change the duration of all stills at the same time (from 3 seconds to 4, for example). Or, if I want all of the cross dissolves to last 1:15 instead of 1:00, it would be nice to select and change them all at once. However, in both cases, I can't figure out how to select all 50 without having to Command-click 50 times.
Any ideas you have will be appreciated.
    Bart

To perform the same duration change on just the transitions (cross dissolves, in this example), this technique will work:
    Open timeline index.
Enter "cross" in the search box (or whatever transition you're wanting to change).
Select all cross dissolves in list (click one, then type Command-A).
Click the time strip in the top of the timeline area.
All of the transitions in the list should now be selected in the timeline.
    Control-D to change duration.
    Enter new duration.
    Hit Return.
I hope this saves someone all of the time I spent on it today. I'm still ahead, though, thanks to Tom's help. This saved litterally hundreds of Command-clicks.

  • Can not clear transition in MBP

I have a portable hard drive with a FCP 5.1.2 project on it. Most of this work is was done on an iMac G5. I can delete a cross dissolve transition just fine. However when I have this same project file running the same version of FCP on my Intel MBP, it will NOT delete the transition. It will remove the transistion from the timeline, but the transition is still there on playback! I noticed this same thing when playing with MBPs at the Apple store, but at the time I thought it was something with how the demo computers were set up. How do a delete a cross dissolve on a MBP? Whatever happen to platform independence?

Weird - I'll have to test it out on my MBP.
In the meantime try moving opacity up and down at the point where the transition used to be to force it to rerender and see if that makes it go away.

  • Transition Problems in Full Screen View

    Hi.
I've created a Powerpoint presentation on the Bayeux Tapestry which I now want to convert to a PDF document so that I can add multimedia.
My Powerpoint presentation features photographs of a section the tapestry with each photograph placed on a separate slide. I've used the Powerpoint 'push left' transition to create a panoramic effect which creates the illusion that the tapestry is being scrolled from right to left  as the viewer clicks through the presentation. It all works very well in Powerpoint as the slides butt up against each other in transition without any 'seam' between them.
I thought I could simply replicate the effect in Acrobat 9 by converting the presentation to PDF and selecting the 'push left' transition from Advance/Document Processing options then launching the document in full screen view. However, I've found that using a push left transition in Acrobat creates wacking great gaps between the pages as they scroll right to left: this absolutely ruins the whole effect.
As you can probably tell, I'm pretty much a newbie with Acrobat 9 (but not with other Adobe applications) and I can't work out for the life of me how to get around this problem. Is there someting simple that I'm overlooking on the full screen view options or perhaps in the Powerpoint conversion settings or do I have to start adjusting resolutions etc? Or maybe it's just the nature ofthe beast (do hope not)?
I'd be very grateful for any enlightenment or advice.
PS: Forgot to mention the Powerpoint was created in default landscape layout and hence so is the PDF.

Do you have the PDF version to fill the full screen and not leave borders? If you print to PDF (not create PDF), then a margin is added by default (as when you print to paper). The border can be reduced to 0, but that is an extra step with the print. As I recall, the PDF Maker (create PDF) does not include the margins. Thus the whole margin bit may be the issue.

  • Having problem with FCP 5.1.4 adding transitions. Just new to this app.

    So I get 2 maybe 3 transitions set correct. After that none work properly. ie: lets go for the quicktime zoom transition. So as it zooms out it plays the first quarter of the 1st part of the transition in the zoom box. This is not correct it should be playing the second part of the transition. Anyway about 1/4 of the way through it does play the second half of the transition which is correct and plays the rest of it properly. It does the same for cross dissolve and all other transitions. I have trashed the preferences but that doesn't seem to help. I have also changed the preferences and that doesn't help. OS is 10.5.8; 6g of ram; powermac g5 quad core 2.5ghz;
    Please if anyone can help.
Below I entered FCP 6 because 5 was not available.

Just to clarify, by "FCP 5 friendly source material," he means video files that are a format (codec) that FCP 5 supports. What FCP 5 supports can be found in the EASY SETUP list. If the format you are working with isn't there, say if your footage is H.264 or MP4 or some other web compressed format, FCP won't work properly.  It needs to be in an editing codec if you want FCP 5 to work with it.
Also, you need to make sure that your sequence settings match the settings of the footage you are trying to edit. If you add a clip to the sequence, and immediately have to render, that's a big clue to say that something isn't right. You should edit without rendering at all.
The most important thing you need to do is properly set up your project from the start, and the best way to do this is to choose a setting from the Easy Setups, located under the Final Cut Pro menu. Once you do this, you’ll need to create a new sequence.  This is because the sequence that is already in your new project is setup for the typical default setting of DV/NTSC, or for the settings of your last project, which might not match what you are currently working with.  So delete SEQUENCE 1 and create a new sequence:
This new sequence will contain the settings you chose in the Easy Setup menu, and should match the format you captured

  • Purchasing transitions (and/or creating ones in Motion)

I'm going to be doing a lot of work for a pretty straight-forward interview type TV show that is looking to spice up its transitions and are open to the idea of purchasing some to go beyond what FCP includes. I was looking at the ones from Eiperle and Eureka (both of which look good, are affordable, and can be used on multiple computers) and Sapphire. I'm wondering A) if there are others I should look into and B) which people recommend for what is essentially an Entertainment Tonight style show.
Also, I'm wondering if it is possible to create transitions in Motion that can be dropped into FCP (or better yet, if the templates, such as the 'frames/glass' one, can be saved without elements and dropped into FCP as a transition between clips)
    Thanks for your help!

I think it can be used as a storage device by using a 3rd party App, search the the App Store for such items.
Photos transferred to your Touch via iTunes will be of severely compromised quality i.e 640x480 pixel resolution and file size around 600-700 kb. These can be retrieved, again using a 3rd party application on your computer, such as [Touch Copy|http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy> but you will not get back original quality images.

  • Yoga 2 Pro no longer detects orientation/transitions and lid closing for sleeping

My Yoga 2 Pro used to detect orientation and transition with no problem and the Transition app would pop-up the notification for Tent mode or Tablet mode, etc.
Everything worked great... then, within last couple weeks, it stopped detecting closure of the lid to trigger sleep mode (though the screen would go black) and now I've also found that it has stopped detecting the different modes and will only operate in Laptop mode...  no Tent mode, no Tablet mode, etc.
Now, to put it into sleep mode, I have to select it from the Start menu and then close the lid (it does detect reopening the lid and wakes up as usual).
Obviously not having the ability to use those other 3 modes kinda defeats the purpose and value of having a Yoga 2 Pro!

I have a slide with a stand-alone video (not a slide video).  I also have a text caption below the video that I want to be static text.  But no matter what I do with the text caption's properties, it fades in and out.  I've set it to no transition, I've tried fading in only and setting the timing to 0...no effect.  I have the text caption set to play for the side duration.  Still no effect.
Am I missing something really elementary here?

Hello and welcome to the forum,
Is this the first or the last slide of the file? I'm asking this because the default Start & End setting of a file is also to fade in/out. You can change that in the Preferences, Project, Start & End. I suppose you already checked the slide transition?
