Nokia 1020 battery drain rates.. mine typical?

I recently got the 1020.. i've installed a battery app.. at one point, post a MS update that i got through dev channels, had issues with massive battery drain.. around 20 percent per hour..
So i reset the phone to factory defaults, per some threads around here.. also tried running with very few apps.. saw around 3.5 percent per hour after that, at least till i put some apps back on it..
This is with wifi, bluetooth and lte on.
My usage throughout the day is minimal.. no videos typically.. just web page hits or email checks or message checks etc.. i turn the phone "off" / standby when not in use typically.. maybe have it on say 45 minutes out of the day without turning it off.. and the rest here and there for email checking.
A few days in row.. start off with 100% around 9am.. by 515 its at 38-40%.. (the recharge rate varies between 25-40%, depending on which recharger i'm using.. i have usb charge ports for the wall.. some are 1 amp, some 2.. not sure this matters on charging)..
Right now i checked the phone.. it shows a 6.8 percent discharge rate.. i really havent seen anything below 5 in awhile now.. it can peak at 11-14 when doing a mix of web/videos etc for 15 minutes.
I do have 2 active tiles and a lot of things pinned.. maybe three swipes worth to get to the bottom if that..
Can anyone comment on their discharge rates.. does this sound normal.. thinking maybe swapping it at the store if they have them there, before my 30 days runs out.. not sure if nokia warranty goes beyond that or not and i'm guessing no advanced replacement if needed.
Thanks in advance

I have a Lumia 920 that is out of warranty, and has been having battery issues for quite a while. I have to add, my phone is developer unlocked. My phone currently dischrages about 20% per hour, or so it says. I restart the phone, and my battery level goes back up, and basic math tells me it is really discharging less than 2% per hour. I have to reset the phone about three or four times a day. Since it is developer unlocked, I wrote an app using the battery API. There are only a few items you can return from the battery API, the ESTIMATED battery % remaining, and the ESTIMATED time remaining. There is also an event that is supposed to fire when the battery % drops 1%. If you don't understand programming, and event is something that happens in code that when it does happen, you can write code to execute when that event happens. So in my app, I can clearly see the battery % drop, the time drop, but the EVENT never fires. I have had battery apps installed, and they mimick the same results I am getting. Also, they never update the battery remaining % or time on live tiles, which tells me the event is not firing in their code either. I have an open discussion in Windows Phone developer forums about this. I just got a 1520, and am going to try and side load the app without developer unlocking the phone to see if the same behavior occurs. Since my phone is out of warranty, I also tried a new battery, but same behavior. I'm pretty sure this is not a hardware issue, but a software issue, at least in my case. When your battery runs down, have you tired rebooting your phone to see if the battery level comes back up?

  • Nokia 700 battery drain in AT&T 3.5g mode

    Hi all,
I have seen a couple of old comments on the battery life of the Nokia 700 and for the past 5 months I have also suffered from this problem however I have done a couple of experiments and wonder if it is just me or is this consistent with others.
A little history on my experience:
I purchased the phone in July 2012 (in the USA). The first couple of months the phone was great: battery life was ~4 days with moderate use in 3g mode on AT&T. In September 2012 I went to China and brought my phone along with me and used a prepaid SIM card while I was there and there was no problem with the battery life. When I returned to the US in October 2012, the battery life diminished significantly: full battery drain in less that 12 hours with NO use. Installing nokia battery monitor offered no insight as the entire battery drain is in the "Background" with no further information. Further testing showed that switching to GSM mode would extend the battery life to 5 days (as opposed to the 12 hours in 3g mode).
Annoyed by this turn of events, I contacted nokia's repair service, sent in my phone, had my phone replaced by a new phone, and found out that the brand new phone also has the same problem! Rather than dealing with the repair service again (the whole process took about 1 month to complete and there was a 2 week period where I was without my mobile), I opted to run my phone in GSM mode to extend the battery life, only switching to 3g when I need fast mobile internet.
Anyway, in December 2012 I travelled to Malaysia for 2 weeks. Once again I brought my phone along to use a prepaid SIM card. Not much to my surprise, when running the phone in 3g mode in Malaysia with moderate use the phone lasted 4 days on a single charge! Unfortunately, upon returning to the US, the battery life problems resurfaced, leaving me to believe that it the problem has something to do with how the nokia 700 is interfacing with AT&T's service.
My questions are the following: has anyone had a similar experience to mine? Does anyone know if AT&T did anything to their service that could be causing the battery drain when in 3g mode? If so, does anyone know how to fix this? Finally, is there anything Nokia can do firmware wise to prevent this from happening? I believe this is technically possible because the first few months that I owned this model I had no problems with battery life.
Thanks for reading my long-winded message.

This is an issue which is widespread in the cellular industry but which nobody will comment on.
All customer support in the business is done by either script monkeys in call/email centres, or by near-useless forums such as this one which are packed with people tearing their hair out but on which anybody who really knows anything (i.e. working inside the industry) is banned from participating. Nokia employees read the stuff here quietly.
I too have noticed there is a GSM / 3G selection in these phones (I have a 700 and an 808), as well as the various configs for "mobile data" (GPRS or 3G or HSPA). It would be interesting to test whether setting the phone to GSM-only (i.e. disabling "3G" in that menu) stops it working for mobile data totally, or forces it to use only GPRS for mobile data. I have just done a quick test (have a poor 3G signal here) and it looks like the latter.
Different cellular networks are configured differently. For example the 808 is severely affected by the famous 3G bug, massively so in some countries (USA especially though apparently not really on T-Mobile there) but much less so in the UK. I think some networks are set up for a much higher packet rate, or they transmit at a lower power which would force the phone to wind up its own power output a lot more.

  • Help! My Nokia N8 battery drains to 0% in 8 hours

    Hello everyone,
First of all, I'd like to state that I have read a lot and please do not advise things like "turn off GPS, bluetooth, etc, etc, etc,". It's not that. There is NOTHING running in my cellphone.
I charged it completely to 100% (until hearing the bip), that was at 12:00am, went to bed, woke up at 7am and the phone was 20% battery. I tested this during several nights now.
I bought my phone 2 weeks ago and the battery lasted at least 2 days with me listening to music, playing games, browsing the Internet through my home Wi-Fi, making calls and sending e-mails BUT suddenly this problem started to happen.
Something to have in mind, I had a Qtek 9100 before this Nokia N8 and had the same exact problem, and I believe this occurs when connecting the cell phone to my laptop or computer, why?, again, because I remember my at that time new Qtek 9100 had a new battery and all of a sudden, when I connected it to my laptop or PC through USB port, its battery started to drain itself (of course I didn't realize it was my laptop or PC fault at that time), but now, with my Nokia N8, the NEW battery drains to 0% too and the only thing I can think of (since I have just bought the cell phone) is the same thing, that I connected the Nokia N8 to my laptop and/or PC through USB.
It's frustrating to see that you charge your NEW phone to 100% and in less than 8 hours it goes to 0% without doing anything at all, just going to bed with the phone's battery saving feature activated.
I am positive my laptop or PC has something that interacted with the battery powering and either damaged it or had something stuck in a way the battery is being drained someway.
By the way, I don't discard my PC or laptop had an application stuck and continuously running in the background that I haven't discovered.
So, based on what I explained, any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thank you all,
    Max

If you expecting a solution, well you will not get it, Nokia N8 is not the only phone with this problem, most smartphones are, Ifruite 4, droids, I'm sure Nokia will do something about it in their future FW upgrade, but for now you just have to deal with it and try to manage by tweaking your setting as mentioned in those other threads. I get about 12 hours of battery life out of mine and its not great but hey I don't mind charging it up every now and then. And if I do some heavy usage, probably around 7-8 hours but again, I charge it more than once a day and its not always full charge, mostly just to add some juice to it. Hopefully we see a better battery management in the next FW.
Once again, I don't really care about the performance of other smartphones.
I'm only interested in the performance of the N8, more particularly my own.
None of the Nokia N8s sold until now has reached, or even come close, to the official specs published by Nokia. That needs to be explained by the brand.
If the numbers are not explained, it is a case of fraudulent publicity and that, is punishable by law!
    Your kidding me right?
Nokia is a international company that has been huge for decades. I'm PRETTY SURE they know what they are doing. For the LAST time, the length that is advertised for the phone isn't the 100% absolute length of time the phone will last, it will vary between every single user depending on how you use it.
You CANNOT expect a phone to last as long as you want it to.
There ARE some minor faults with the Symbian power management that cause this phone to drain more power than it should, but that should be fixed soon.
My N8 lasts me 3 days easily. and im currently on my 4th.
If you honestly believe that Nokia is breaking the law, than by all means, on behalf of ALL OF US here in the forums who want a better battery life, sue the pants off them, or try to. But if you can't or don't want to, then stop telling everyone else they are breaking the law.

  • Nokia e72 battery draining problem

Ive been having this problem for over 3 months now. It all started one day when I normally charged my phone and when i took it off, it was extremely hot. After that, whenever i fully charge the phone, it would barely stay on for 15 minutes. I do not use it at all, when I do, the battery goes from fully charged to one bar and then battery empty. I have tried everything, changing the battery, changing the chargers, charging from both of the places (mini usb and the small pin). Any suggestions?

If your phone doesn't have the latest Firmware, update it thru' Nokia Suite . Keep the charger connected if and when you do it so that the phone doesn't switch OFF during the process because of the problem in subject. Also keep in mind that the phone will switch OFF and ON on its own during the update so don't worry and do not use or disconnect the phone till the update is over.
If problem remains, you need to get the device checked by a Nokia Care technician for any Harware issues..

  • 1020 battery drain after WP 8,1 installed...

So, why is this happening? Fully charged the battery is down to 70% after a few hours without doin anyhting...before it stayed on 100% for several hours before it turned 99%....
Its not the only thing bad with the new WP 8,1...but nobody seem to care anymore....

Maybe its the GPS checking position more often? I often see that symbol appearing...but there are no settings for GPS sync.
Other things is when I talk..people complaing Im dissapearing...and I see the phone jumps to "H" from "4G" even though I have full signal on 4G almost always here in Stockholm...and same thing happen on different places..not only at home.
And there is a glitch while scrolling text slowly for ex when reading a document, email or sms...the phone do some kind of refresh somewhere making me loose where Im in the text and have to lift finger and start scroll/drag the text again...but it only jumps about one textline...very annoying!
And the new marker for editing a misspell is horrific...have to tap the screen several times to get it in position...and mostly it forst mark a whole word..before I just put my thumb near the misspell and waitid one sec and then draged it into postion at once...now there is very complicated and I sometime rather write the whole word on 10 letters than try to fix only one letter....
And still other stupid things about the WP is still there in 8,1.....like this soundglitch playing music or a video and you tap the length meter a loud noice appear before sound srtarts again...its like its max volume by default and the program take a fraction of a secound to adjust it to current user setting...this do not happen when headphones is plugged in...
    Whanna hear more stupid things?.

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 Overheating & Battery Drain after...

    Hello,
I've been experiencing an intermintent problem with my Nokia Lumia 1520 (AT&T, 16GB model) where my phone overheats and the battery drains. The problem started after I upgraded to Windows Phone 8.1 and Lumia Cyan. As of now I haven't figured out a good step by step method to reproduce the problem on demand however I have noted that when this problem occurs and I wake the phone and unlock it the Start screen shows a never ending or unusually long "Loading" message and my phone will overheat and drain the battery. So far the only way to mitigate the problem is by shutting it down manually or performing a "soft" reboot of the phone. Afterwards the problem gets resolved and the phone resumes normal operations after rebooting with the phone returning to a normal temperature and battery drain rate that is consistent with the use it is being given.
Given that I don't know anyone else carrying a Lumia 1520 has anyone seen something similar to the problem I am describing on this post with their Lumia 1520 unit after updating to Windows Phone 8.1?
So far the only big resolution step I've taken is to perform a complete phone reset and not recovering the phone from my back ups, effectively making it a "new" phone in terms of settings and software conditions.
My theory for this problem is that it is software driven as an overheated phone and a stuck "Loading" message instead of the Start screen after unlocking the phone indicates that a software process (either OS or separate Application) may be behind the issue.
Thanks for any assistance on this matter!

Did not work unfortunately... But I have resolved my overheating and battery drain issue...
CORTANA is the culprit and needs to be unpinned from the start screen.
Here is the process if CORTANA is piined already..
    1) Unpin CORTANA
    2) Go to "Settings.. Applications and open Cortana
    3) Turn off Cortana
    4) Phone will RESET
    5) Go to "Settings.. Applications and open Cortana
    6) Turn on CORTANA
DO NOT PIN TO START SCREEN
    7) Swipe your start screen over to your applications
    8) select CORTANA and allow it to set it self up again.
Now CORTANA is still accessible by the Search icon or from your application menu.
Now your battery.. Before the update my battery was reading "1 day, 14+ hours"
After update After recharge I was getting 14 hours then it would start draining.
After taking CORTANA off the start screen my phone stop getting hot near the camera (Upper left) and after 2 days (Battery cycling) my battery has returned back to reading "1 day, 14+ hours"
My assumption - The matter will be resolved with the Lumia Denim update coming later this qtr.
When that arrives my understanding is CORTANA is off BETA in US. Some additional Firmware tweaking, along with the camera updates and more.. Which "SHOULD" resolve this battery drain & over heating with CORTANA
Per my experience, I believe you're right that Cortana is the culprit for the problem described by the original poster. I unpinned Cortana from my start screen 6 days ago, and so far so good. I have not had a recurrence of that problem. I did not turn Cortana off and then back on again though. I just unpinned it, and that seems to have done the trick.
I'm also hopeful the Windows Phone 8.1.1 and Lumia Denim update will fix this since Cortana will be off Beta in the U.S.

  • Push Notification & Battery Drain

We all know that push notification uses more battery, but does the number of apps that I turn on notifications for affect the battery drain rate? Assuming that I'm already using push notification for an app or two, would turning on notifications for more apps drain the battery more quickly?

Push is known to drain the battery quicker yes. You should be able to disable it in the settings. Push will only be available if you have an app that has that feature enabled and installed.

Has the battery life diminished that much?
I find that even pre-FP1 Symbian's battery life is poor. The 1080mAh batter is cripplingly small. They had to do that to conserve space. I would recommend that you remove widgets such as "Social" and "Twitter/Facebook" that CONSTANTLY check for updates, and set your email retrieve rate to once an hour. Even with this, I struggle to get through a day without the battery dying on me.
I recomend that you buy an external portable charger like the:
    TeckNet® iEP387 7000mAh
so that you can charge on the go.

Restore iPad to Factory Default; do not restore from backup. It may be the cause of the problem.

    Agree with Richard:
-Your device needs both the CR and LF. To accomplish this:
option 1: Concatenate the "end of line" string constant (this is a combination of CR and LF, located in the string pallete) to all your outgoing commands. Make sure in the "Visa configure serial port" the "Termination character enable" flag is false.
option 2: Concatenate only a CR to your command's strings. Make sure in the "Visa configure serial port" the "Termination character enable" flag is TRUE AND that the termination character is set to 10 (meaning LF) which I think is the default.
Details can be seen in this link:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/862567530005F09C862565BE005AB500
"Adding Termination Characters to VISA Serial Writes in LabVIEW"
Interesting would be to configure the serial port to accept not one but two termination characters. The above links refers to the document "Developer Zone Tutorial: Termination Characters in NI-VISA.", where this is supposed to be possible. The document however is 404'ed.
If someone find a working link please post it.

  • Nokia Lumia 920 potential battery drain issue?

Can you Nokia confirm this? http://reach.jdbpocketware.com/topic/128305-to-nokia-ref-lumia-920/
    The issue illustrated in detail:
    Nature of Windows Phone buttons
Pressing either the power button or the camera button will cause the device screen to turn on, even when the proximity sensor detects proximity.
    The lockscreen behavior
Upon power on, screen lights up and shows the lockscreen (or camera), which runs a timeout to auto power off the device if screen is not touched in X seconds.
But if screen is touched, the timeout counter is restarted, so continuous touching could lead into a loop, the "death loop" which won't let the device to power off (standby) and will consume battery life.
    New touchscreen technology
The Nokia Lumia 920 comes with a touchscreen that reacts to touch from pretty much any material such as metal or clothes. This can be dangerous.
    So here is a theory
When the phone is inside a pocket or bag it can be touched by other objects. These objects can press buttons and can touch/rub the screen. This will initiate the "death loop" for who knows how much time, could be minutes or hours, depends on how active the user is since body movement will produce friction between objects/clothes and touchscreen:
The "death loop" will drain battery and battery is precious.
    Solution?
Should be simple: screen must not power on if the proximity sensor detects proximity. Current version of Windows Phone does not take care of this. The big question is: will Windows Phone 8 take care of this? Is the Lumia 920 a potential battery drainer?

I don't understand why we have to spend our valuable time in the forums for days and nights to FIND HOW TO FIX THAT CRAB!! NOKIA company did not handout these devices FOR CHARITY.All of us had paid around a thousand dollars to buy this Phone. They have got to work overtime to fix it and publish a solution otherwise recall the devices back.
