Nokia 500 GPS

I hope this is the right place for this. I have searched the boards for this pertaining to my Nokia 500 GPS. I received this as a gift fo Cristmas and all has been well with it up until a week ago. When the unit is turned on or reset or master power off then on, it comes to the Nokia "Hands almost touching" splash screen with a "thinking" circle and just sits there. It is not toally locked up, as you can go to the main menu and look at a few things, but whatever you look at, it will be interrupted with the same screen, and it never goes any further. You can plug into the compuer and it access just fine as a mass storage device. I checked the maps, as well as the software, which is the latest version. I'm hoping I won't have to send it in after only a month, and instead someone has run into this and can tell me what to do. Thanks for the help, SJ

  • TTS on NOKIA 500 GPS

Hi, I live in Toronto and just bought a Nokia 500 GPS. I must say that the device is quite good. my N72 is connected and working fine, FM transmitter is good, Navigation is good except I am struggling with TTS.
Though I selected English US language and Female Voice (TTS) but it does not work. GPS goes silent. I feel that the XML file i have got on the DVD is wrong. Can someone send me the Female Voice (TTS) XML file to compare mine.
    Thanks
    PJ

Ovi Suite or Map Loader doesn't work with Nokia 500 GPS, there no map updates for this device at the moment. The only map that is available is the one that came on DVD in the box.

  • Nokia 500 GPS questions/troubles with: Contacts, F...

So... I have owned my 500 now since Christmas (I received the 500 as a gift from my father-in-law). Overall, for my first GPS device, I really enjoy all the features... But, I'm having quite a few troubles and hoped that some expert users or Nokia Support folks might be able to help.
    1) It took me forever, but I found a program to sync my Treo 700wx from Verizon to the Nokia 500. When I first tried syncing my phone it was recognized just fine but then only downloaded my 5 favorite (or quick dial) contacts from the Windows Mobile homepage. Then I did some looking on the internet and found a program from a company called JETware Mobile Software at www.jetwaremobile.com. The first time I used this software (the trial version only) I suceeded in syncing 623 contacts to the Nokia 500. Here are the issues though... The addresses did not sync (what a huge inconvenience considering this was 90% of the reason I wanted to sync the contacts). The phone numbers for each contact (if there were multiple phone numbers for the same person) sync as seperate contacts on the Nokia 500 (not a huge deal).
Question# 1) Isn't there a way to use some sort of a program on the PC to syncronize contacts from let's say Outlook or VCF files or a CSV file to the Nokia 500 manually?
    2) I copied all the data from the supplied 2gb SD card and loaded it onto a new AData 16gb SD card & re-inserted the card to make sure everything worked ok on the device - No problem. I uploaded 8 gb of MP3 & 4 gb of Movies (in MP4 format - great program to use is www.pqdvd.com - buy the iPod version or PSP version so you can use it for both) and 1 gb of pictures.
    Here are my comments:
MP3's - The player is a bit cheezy, but I was finally able to figure out how to play at random all the MP3s or play individual folders of songs at a time. Too bad you can't create or import a playlist!
FM Transmitter - Totally worthless in Sacramento, CA where there isn't a whole lot of open FM channels on the radio dial. Unfortunately my Jetta doesn't have an audio input plug otherwise this might work a lot better!
Note: the only place I can find to turn the FM transmitter on is in the MP3 playing mode (very strange & annoying)
Movies - I read a lot here to find out why the playback was so choppy & pretty low quality... Bottom line - You have to record the MP4s at about 15fps and create a MP4 file for about a one & a half hour movie that is about 600mb or so. This seemed to work pretty good.
Question #2) Is there a recommendation from Nokia experts on how to help the FM transmitter function worth a darn?
    3) I've searched for many addresses on the GPS and echo other's complaints about very strange missing information & strange city lines in Nokia's software. It's very odd to me that I have to go thru about 10 clicks to "Take me home" and that everytime the device navigates me home it takes me a very off-the-beaten-path way home.
Question #3) Is there a way to save the route you actually drove between two destinations and store that as a trip on the Nokia 500 - vs. storing just the end destination & the Nokia solution to get from point A to B.
    4) Battery life - If I had to guess the average battery life I've seen using this device is about 1 hour from power up to "I really need charging". Is this normal for GPS devices? I'm guessing it must be and most people just keep these plugged in at all times to their cigarette adapters.
    5) Traffic - From my testing in Sacramento, CA there is no traffic service or alerts.
Question #4) Is there a service I need to purchase & how would one go about turning on traffic services for the Nokia 500?
    6) User-interface - I'm brand new to this whole GPS world but as you can tell from this review I'm pretty tech-savvy... I'm a bit surprised at home much savvy it really takes to operate this device and I would think the average not-so-savvy user would be very put off by this.
Overall if I were to rate this device out of 10 I'd have to say it's a strong 6/10 and possibly a 7/10.
I really appreciate any expert feedback on my above 4 questions & 6 topics if at all possible.
    Thank you!
    ~Jeff

Jeff, here's my input on your points and questions. Thanks for writing your post...
Question 1) It only supports syncing over bluetooth with phones that meet its bluetooth specs (see the user manual on the DVD for more details or the product website)
    Point 2)
While you can't create or import a playlist on the Nokia, you can use your media player on your computer (e.g. Windows Media Player), while the SD card is inserted in your card reader on your computer, to create a playlist. Then copy the playlist file over the existing playlist file found in the root of your SD card.
Question 2) Not sure how to answer this one. The transmitter is built into the Nokia. So you just need to program it to use an available frequency (understanding that it is hard to find in your area). It doesn't unfortunately have the ability to scan for available frequencies (that would be cool).
Point 3) After you've selected to take you home, press the menu button and the Alt Route button where you can (according to the manual) configure the Nokia to block a route from being used.
Question 3) You would have to create a trip that includes enough waypoints (which you can create by creating bookmarks as you drive along) and then use that. Not to be sarcastic, but I find it funny how obsessed we all get about a GPS choosing the best route when if you already know of a better route then why do you even need the GPS' guidance? I'm guilty of this too so I'm also laughing at myself.
Point 4) I'm guessing that if your using the bluetooth integration, the FM transmitter, the TMC receiver, streaming video, using navigation, and keeping the brightness at the max setting, the estimated 2hr battery life isn't going to happen. The manual actually recommends using the cigarette lighter because it is your TMC receiver.
Point 5) My city (Vancouver, Canada) does offer TMC and my Nokia says its tuned in (I know because I've also seen the message where it says it is Tuning) yet I've not seen one traffic advisory yet. My Nokia's manual included an addendum from Nokia saying that TMC service is not available in the US and Canada. We all know this isn't true but maybe this is Nokia's way of saying their version of a TMC receiver doesn't work in North America.
Question 4) Good question. I think the answer is no because this TMC receiver is meant to work with a free TMC service. I'm thinking that maybe the only TMC services in US and Canada are pay-services that require you to enter a subscription unlock code in your GPS - the Nokia doesn't appear to provide such a function. *** This is my theory, I haven't confirmed this with any TMC provider ***
Point 6) I agree the user interface is not meant for non-tech-literates. It took me awhile to figure it out. Especially the meaning of icons and when to use them. This is NOT the Tivo of GPS
Overall I'm satisfied with my GPS even though I suspect there will never be map, POI, or software updates. I plan to figure out a way to mount it to my motorbike and ride all the way down to Mexico City (if I can figure out how to unlock the license for the Mexico map!)

  • Nokia 500 Wi-Fi with problems (and other issues)

    Hi there.
I had my Nokia 500 yesterday, but it seems to have several problems regarding wireless LAN. I usualy disable 3G traffic (WAP, GPRS, UMTS), so that my service provider doesn't charge me, and only enable with when necessary. But I want the phone to connect to known Wi-Fi networks when avaialable. However:
1 - When I enable "Only WLAN" in my country, several phone applications constantly annoy me about "no avaialable connection", even when its connected to a Wi-Fi LAN!
2 - Its constantly searching for wireless networks, and the Wi-Fi connection is intermitent. It fails and then it comes up all the time. I could not finish the download of a GPS map because the Wi-Fi would fail before the download could finish. And it only had 1 known Wi-Fi network avaialable.
3 - So I set it to use only WLAN, I set  "WLAN energy saving" to off, "search networks" to "once in 30 minutes" (and not automatically), and Manual selecion of WLAN. Even like this, the WLAN connection sometimes fails, and then comes back!
Also, I cannot install software directly from OVI Store using WLAN (error downloading), and the phone crashed several times while recognizing and focusing a face using the camara.
I am trully disapointed with the phone. Does anyone have a solution for these problems?
    Thanks.

You may want to check your battery and battery contacts. Make sure that a Centro battery has not been installed in this device as it is slightly smaller and will not maintain pressure on the battery contacts.
You can try placing a piece or 2 of paper behind the battery to make to contacts tighter. A loose battery can cause most of the issue you are describing.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Go back to the support page for this device. It will give you all the info needed for updating. It has a link for downloading software to your PC. Once this is done, the software is used to check your gps and see what version of firmware is loaded, and will compare it to the latest version. It will then allow you to download and install the latest on your gps.

  • Nokia 500 auto navigation will not work

I have a nokia 500 auto navigation and it will not show maps or it start to boot and freezup and will not work Help!

I had the same problem a couple of months after activating the gps.
I think my problem came up after I had loaded some songs and video onto the SD card.
I used the DVD to restore the maps etc. Be careful with that. The software to run the video/music is not included on the restore DVD.
I had to do the restore multiple times. Finally, I found an update on the Nokia website and did the update. DON'T DO THAT = my bluetooth has now stopped working. Bluetooth says it's on and you can turn it off, however, there's no change. It says on, but no devices can connect to the gps anymore.
Frustrated with Nokia? YES. I have had it sent back, but since I bought it on ebay, forget about that.

  • Nokia 500 auto navigation

    Hello!
I live in Portugal and I bought the nokia 500 auto gps. While searching the nokia pages I saw the update for my nokia. I made the update and all went fine. Then when i got to use the fm transmiter i saw that the frequency i used was no longer possible. I use frequency 108.0 witch worked prior to the update now the range goes up to 107.9. I can´t use this frequency because it was many jams and there is no other possible. Can i correct my gps so that i can use the frequency 108.0 again? Because in this way I can't use the FM transmitter. Please can someone help me?

I dont live in Portugal but surely you have more options than 108.0....
most FM radios go from 85.0 to 108.0 or so....
I use the FM transmitter on my N500 with the defualt 88.1 FM
Im not sure i understand your problem....does Portugal have THAT many FM radio stations that you have NO empty FM frequencies? Or is your radio not working correctly and you cant tune in an unused frequency?

  • Nokia 500 Auto Navigator -- Navigation License

I've now searched, everywhere, and send various calls and e-mails to Nokia with NO response, hope somebody can help:
This device is NOT a phone, it is the Nokia 500 Auto Navigator GPS. Please see on the Nokia web site link http://europe.nokia.com/A4577607 .
The devise shows the map, current location, and tracks the route traveled, but does not navigate. As soon as I try to select a route, I shows an error on the GPS screen " NO VALID LICENSE FOUND FOR THIS ROUTE". On the device it shows certain profiles and the one I believe to be the Navigation License called NAVI RSA and NAVY EUROPE are locked. I need to know how to either unlock this, or if I need to purchase a navigation license, how do I do this on this GPS devise manufactured and supplied by NOKIA. Again this device is NOT a phone, so I do not have the options of the menus to purchase extra licenses.
Please assist ASAP, and please do not again refer me back to distibutor Autopage where I purchased the devise, as they can not supply me with any information, and told me several times to contact NOKIA, as they should provide this support.
Hope to hear from someone soon.

Why won't you try to online purchase the rest of the navigation you need? I mean, it's possible for the general phone navigation, why it won't for navigations too??

  • Maps for the Nokia 500

I am new to the GPS world. I recently purchased the Nokia 500 and would like to know if any map updates are available. Are these provided free of charge like other GPS manufacturers? Thanks!

first of all I don't think "others" provide free maps update. At least I used to own TomTom and they charged me ~$80 for update. Second, right now Nokia does not have any maps or POIs updates. So there's no info when it's available and how much it's going to cost. Trust me, I called them 200 times, no one knows answer. The only thing available is software update. If you bought your GPS recently I don't think you need it.

    Hi,

Hi, It is strange! I have the same problem, or quite similar. First, I could not in any way to disable(block), WiFi, still connected to my home network. Very nice, but I mean the saving of the battery and primarily aimed at controlling the WiFi connection. Even when you delete the software (Gmail, etc.) you can see it WiFi icon, which means that the system is armed and searches WiFi ...
    1. Where is the turn off WiFi on the Nokia 500?
    2. How do I set that in general the receiver turned off WiFi and did notconsume energy?
3.Where can I turn off the GPS receiver?

  • Nokia 500 software improvements - my $0.02

I just bought a Nokia 500, and so far I really like it, but there are a couple of things I would like to either know how to do or see improved/added in future versions (sort of in order of preference). I'm sure I'll have more, but this is what occurs to me after two days of use.
    - support for a US provider of TMC traffic data (e.g. Clear Channel or MSN Direct). MSN uses NAVTEQ, which is owned by Nokia, and MSN service is cheaper, but I don't know if that is something that can be done with a software update - Is it still TMC?
    - automatically turn on FM transmitter when phone rings (or be able to leave it on without having to play music all the time)
    - bluetooth stero headset profile so I can play music off my iphone (I know, iPhone doesn't support their end of this yet either) through the Nokia and into the car radio, still getting the pause for spoken directions
    - Ability to synch contacts with MS Outlook or even with a comma-delimited file and a way to manage contacts better on the device itself (see next item)
    - better contacts synch with non-Nokia phones (again, my iPhone may be the problem here, but I got all the names imported with no associated numbers or addresses). Had to do a factory reset to remove them.
    - Change the keyboard layout to QWERTY
    - better POI database - searching for Target found two - both over 100 miles away, there are probably three dozen of them closer than that. I haven't played with it any more yet, but have read a lot of complaints about this.
Ability to turn off the voice guidance (maybe can already do this, but haven't found it.
Entering zip codes doesn't seem to work for me. But it may just be that I'm still not entirely comfortable with the interface.

    my 2 cents
    1. Nokia provides built in TMC in charger and I don't see any reasons why it doesn't work in US.
    2. I'm not sure about turning FM transmitter everytime phone rings, but turning off after 1 min is a big down size, for me at least. You won't be listening silent FM channel in your car and wait when somebody call, and internal speaker is pretty good.
    3. Don't own iPhone and never will own one. Streaming music from your phone might be a good idea if you have music on your phone.
    4. Again, don't use Outlook. So agree with you, it might be nice feature, but not for me.
    5. No problem syncing Motorola Z6. I mean no problem at all. All contacts were synced, perfect calling quality. One of the thing can be done, managing contacts on gps device: adding, editing, removing.
    6. yes, yes, yes! it odd that Nokia builds smart phones with QWERTY keyboard, and ditches it on gps device.
    7. yes! better maps, better pois, regular updates. and do something about weird routing.
8 and 9. voice doesn't bother me, i can always put volume down, zip codes need improving. I put at least 2 zip codes that gps didn't recognize.
Overall: Average device, definitely not the best on the market, that needs a lot of improvement.

    1. Disconnect your phone from PC if connected.
    2. Open Control Panel and go to ‘Programs and Features’
    3. From the list of available programs, choose ‘Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver’
    4. Click on the ‘Change’ button on top toolbar.
    5. In the setup dialog box that pops up next, choose ‘Repair’ and select ok. Wait for setup to complete.

  • Nokia 500 and Belle Refresh: browser issues.

    Greetings.
The Belle Refresh was indeed a welcome refresh for this low-to-midrange phone. However, there is a serious issue with the browser.
With the update to Qt 4.8, you inherited QtWebKit, an amazing browser I know very well. In a desktop, it's fast, although it eats more memory than Firefox. However, in a cell phone like the 500, with limited amounts of RAM, this browser freezes the phone, due to the lack of memory. I'm also sure this browser can and will break phones with more memory and Belle FPx, since I've made QtWebKit use more than 1 GB of RAM in a computer running KDE.
There is a way to avoid this, called "user agent". Opera Mobile avoids this scenario by telling pages through user agent "hey, don't be hard on me, I'm browsing this from a cell phone", and pages adjust themselves to that scenario. However, you didn't tweak the user agent in your browser.
If you add no user agent tweaking, full HTML5 support, Flash Lite support (the much higher specced iPhone 4S doesn't support Flash), and low memory, you get a nightmare scenario.
    1. The webpages send their complete, full featured DESKTOP versions to my Nokia 500.
    2. QtWebKit supports everything, so, it makes a faithful attempt to properly render the page, even with Flash apps.
    3. Nokia 500 has only 70-80 MB of RAM free for apps to use.
    4. Boom.
Can you release a hotfix for Belle Refresh, changing the user agent of Nokia Browser to something that can trigger the mobile version of web pages? In that scenario, QtWebKit will eat much less memory and everyone will be happy. And please, can you do this for everyone using Belle Refresh?

I can confirm serious browser issues with the Belle refresh on a C6-01 device. The crash is so severe that only taking out the battery helps. It typically occurs when scrolling larger, feature-rich (and image-rich) webpages, so far I've seen this only on mobile connections (Edge, Umts), but that may be due to lack of testing with WLAN. (Where I've got WLAN I've usually a more powerful device as well..

Well the Nokia "Store" seems to think that the Nokia 500 has "NFC SUPPORT"... Please take a look at this link:
It clearly states there the folllowing:
     - "Simply perform the NFC handshake with another Nokia 500, 600 or 700 to unlock content."
So I don't know if whoever posted it up was trying to mislead people who own the Nokia 500 into buying their application and make them think that the software will "enable" NFC on the device.... Or just a "typo"?
It probably was a marketing strategy..... "me thinks"...
