Nokia 5800 - Letters missing on dial keypad

Here is the email about missing letters on dial keypad I sent to Nokia USA and UK, and their replies:
 Hello,
I recently noticed that there are no letters on the dial keypad.  This is a very necessary feature when entering a alphanumeric login in a voice menu system while on the phone.  Do you have plans to add this in future firmware?
This was also pointed out in CNET's review of Nokia 5800.

I noticed this, too, but found a "workaround" (until Nokia updates their firmware to include this function).  USE the "Notes" APPLICATION, OPEN a “New Note”, then "touchpad" in the blank-lined area to start entering text.  The default "mini QWERTY keyboard" will pop up (well, that's what I have set for my text input).  In the lower right-hand corner of the "mini QWERTY keyboard" (also in the "Full Screen QWERTY keyboard" OR the "Handwriting keyboard", if you have either of these set for your default text input), there is a small image of a keyboard.  When selected, a MENU pops up, allowing you to SELECT an option for an "ALPHANUMERIC KEYPAD" for text input into the "Notes" application.  You can get the numerical correspondence for spelled-out phone numbers like 1-800-iLIKE-YOU (1-800-454-3968) [I don't know or care if that's a "real" number, I'm just using it here as an example] and can just remember them and input them manually into your “Dialer” application, or, you can “type” it directly into the blank “New Note” you already have open, SELECT and EDIT->COPY the number into the phone’s memory, then switch to the “Dialer” application (PRESS and HOLD the WHITE middle button on the lower touchpad until the "open items" display appears, allowing you to select the HOME or the previously-opened "Dialer" application), open the "Dialer" menu and EDIT->PASTE the previously-copied number into the “Dialer” application.  Press the “Dial” function icon and the number will be appropriately dialed.  Whew!  It gets a little easier with practice, especially if you use the GREEN BUTTON on the lower left of the phone’s touchpad, HOLDING IT DOWN until the “Voice Command” application initiates, then say out loud “Notes”, and the phone will switch to the “Notes” application with relative ease, so you’re just a few seconds away from having a “real” alphanumeric keypad that can be used to “decode” those alphanumeric phone numbers many businesses advertise.  Enjoy! • Nokia 5800 XM - Missing applications?

I bought a Nokia 5800XM about 2 months ago, and it is honestly the best phone I've ever owned. But yesterday I started experiencing a slight problem with it, and I'm not sure how to solve it...
Yesterday morning, all my applications were functioning fine - games, Opera Mini and Mxit. At around 12, Mxit stopped functioning, even though I had been using it the whole morning. I thought nothing of it, and simply restarted the phone. Once the phone had started up again, all third party applications were no longer in the applications list! I then decided to see if there weren't maybe updates for Opera Mini and Mxit, but when I started downloading the latest version, I was informed that the application already existed. All third-party applications are saved to my memory card, and when I downloaded Opera Mini to the Phone Memory, it saved and is now accessible. All other data on the memory card is accessible (photos, videos and music).
The games were downloaded over a month ago, and Opera Mini and Mxit were downloaded when I bought the phone. In between, I have not downloaded anything to the phone. What could the problem be?
Current software version is V 21.0.025 and custom version is 21.0.025.232.04. I reset the phone's factory settings, did a virus scan, all to no avail. I'd really appreciate any assistance!!!

    *bump*
I really don't want to take my phone into our local cellphone repair shop (apparently an accredited repair shop) because the people there messed up my last Nokia, so help would really be appreciated.

    Dear Mr. Wang,
Thank you for emailing Nokia Careline.
In response to your inquiry, you can first reboot the phone by turning it off and removing the battery. Wait for around 5 minutes before returning the battery and turning it on. Another option will be to restore the settings by going to Menu > Settings and Phone > Phone mgmt. > Factory settings > Lock Code (default is 12345).

  • Shortcuts/Quick dial on Nokia 5800

I've recently purchased a Nokia 5800 and have set up 4 members of my family as the Quick Dial contact icons on the main screen.
However, when I click on a particular contact and then on the Call icon I don't get any choice over which number the phone calls - despite the fact that I have work, home and mobile numbers saved for all my contacts.
I would like to know if there is any way that you can choose which number you want to call from this screen rather than going through to the Contacts menu (as this defeats the object of having a quick dial shortcut).
Ideally I would like pressing the call button to result in a drop down list of numbers so that I can choose the most appropriate number.
Is this possible as it's always been the case on all my other Nokia's and I miss it on this new phone?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
    H x

I agree that being able to dial any available number for the four favorites would be nice, it is at least possible to select which of their numbers you want to be the default. If you want to change that:
Go to Contacts, find the person
    Select Options
    Defaults
    Phone number
and choose the one you want to be the default speed-dial.

  • Nokia 5800 missing personal files on memory card

    Good day everyone!
I have a problem with my new nokia 5800. A month ago, i lost some of my pictures, which are saved in my memory card. I just ignore it thinking that somebody from my frends just deleted it. After a week, all of the videos, which i took, were all missing.. I was so **bleep** of. A while ago, an application that i downloaded from the net was also lost.. Im so frustrated about this.. Please kindly help me on this one.
Your response is highly appreciated. (n_n)

this seems to be a problem of a common virus as the 5800 is generally doing well except for some performance hogs.
@chan chan, there is absolutely no use when you use a PC antivirus to kill a 5800 symbian's virus. there are s60 antivirus out there, but i recommend you do a hard-reset of your phone by holding
"green" + "red" + "camera key"(full press) all simultaenously while powering on the device.do not leave the power key also till u see "NOKIA" on the screen.before doing this, remove the memory card from the phone and format it on the PC.after the phone starts factory-fresh, insert the formatted card.it should work fine now.also update to the latest v31 firmware.
remember to backup your contacts and other phone-memory data as hard reset wipes-clean all data, but do not use the "backup phone" option as it uses memory card.better sync contacts with other phone or PC
It's not always about KUDOS, but to make people happy with their Nokia. get the most of your Nokia. And be happy with what u get ......yet, please dont forget to press KUDOS if my post helped to solve your problem kudos=Rep++

  • Nokia 5800 Contract phone missing stuff on menu?

My phone is a nokia 5800 and i am on contract
Last night I did the red and green and camera button technique, and my phone went to factory settings i think.
But, I was left with something missing.
It was a folder type thing, and I know its missing as I had a scroll bar before, and now I dont.
It is definately the folder thing,
If you know how to get it back, that would be amazing x

Where was the folder? If you did a factory reset and the folder was a custom item or addition it is now long gone.
If I have helped you with your problem in some way, please take a little time and hit the kudos button in my post. Without your feedback, I don't know if I am being helpful or should just be put out to pasture.

  • Things I found are missing in nokia 5800 Express M...

Tsup guys, I`m having this new release of nokia s60 5th edition (Nokia 5800 Express Music) but since I bought it last month I`ve started discover some features are not working as I always used to see them to my previous handset (Nokia n73-1). At my previous nokia n73 when I`m on playing music that I`ve store in my handset and then the I receive the sms message its only makes a light beep sound even if I`m on profile that setted another alter tune for sms but in this nokia 5800 when sms comes in the middle of track playback its pause for a time from plyaing the song then start ring the current profile`s sms alter tune then keep on playing the track. On the side of adding sms recipients, if your forwading an sms to more than one person then you`ve started adding recipients by either searching or scrolling you might face some of the contacts doesn`t appear in your list after adding some others even if you do it by search contacts for typing the first alphabets of the recipients you are searching. So in order to get them you`ve to select OK then select the ADD RECIPIENTS again then you will find the contacts that were not seen before. Lastly, on the message writing. When I use the HANDWRITING style, I can write my things well but still up to know I`ve not yet find the area where I can erase the words that I`ve wrotes. Instead I`m supposed to change the keyboard type so as I can get the erease key. Can anybody help me to locate where can I find the erease key when I`m in mode of HANDWRITING style that uses a given special touch-screen pencil. I`m using it which means I`II keep discover many more things that seems these nokia have lack in this model & if there is anybody else found something please don`t hesitate to contribute here too. • Nokia 5800 with Greek letters

    Hey all,
I'm hoping to buy a new phone sometime in the next week or so.  I have been looking at the Nokia 5800 however there's a minor setback.  Because I live in Australia, the languages are usually Asian languages and English.  The problem is, I do part time translating and quite often have to message friends in Greece for help, and it's a pain writing in "Greeklish."
    Does anybody know if:
    A.  The Australian version comes with Greek
    B.  If not, is there a way to install a Greek character keyboard
I've used Nokia for the last 8 years and I really don't wnt to change for something so minor, but I may not have a choice.
    Anybody know the answer?
    Thanks!  =)

    A. It does not come with greek installed on the Australian version of the phone.
    B. You can get the language added at a nokia care point, for a small fee.  Ask at your nearest before purchase to ensure that they can do it for you.
    You cannot add it yourself.

  • Nokia 5800 behaves strange

When i purchased Nokia 5800, i found it really good and i thought, this is my best phone till date. But lately, it really made me bad with tons of bugs showing every other day. Here are the list.
1- Install many applications in your phone and your scrollbar in Application will behave really bad. It does not scroll properly. You can not see the applications in the last row in grid view. You will have to tocuh the screen carefully to make it upwards to see the application icons that are not showing with scrollbars. I will soon paste image here as my cell is in Nokia Care now.
2- Change the font size of your cell to small and then do a grid view. You will not be able to see the name of icons. small font size works fine only with list view.
    3. Play a big .flv file and after running smothly for sometime. It starts behaving bad. sound breaks and you are not able to listen sound properly.
    4. Open a .flv file and while it's opening. Tocuh it to make full screen and you will see d-pad that you see when you play flash games. Do we need it while watching .flv. I need to wait for it to open and then only i can touch to screen to make it full screen. That shows it's poor performance.
    5. Press quick media bar shortcut in home screen and you will see your clock hides first than other elements on the screen. It's shows the UI repaint is so slow that you can see the difference in elements being hide.
    6. I don remember, if i ever played with my cell too much, but yet within 4 months of it's usage. My LCD is gone. When someone call or when i on the screen. It shows paraller lines with background colors of home screen icons. It functions when you touch the screen, but you are not able to see anything on the screen. It happens so frequent and your money what you put on your cell goes in vain.
    Problems
    1. I had a theme and a wallpaper in my cell other than default theme when i was doing a mass storage. As soon as i plugged the USB and it selected mass storage. My cell automatically changed its theme and wallpaper to default one that comes when you purcahse cell. It become slow and the last dialled green button stopped working in home screen. It woks in other screens but not on home screen. It means i am not able to dial the last dialled number.
    2. One of my image showing more than 40 times in Gallery with the same name. What i did is deleted the one and it's no more in file system, but it's still there as icon in Gallery and when i try to delete all those duplicate icons. It says can't delete. General error. I have more than 40 dead icons and i am not able to do anything.
    3. Sometimes my clock on home screen just dont displayes. Click on the clock's place and come back to home screen and it will show you the clock. but again move to any other screen and come back to home screen and again clock is not there. Everytime, i need to see the clock, i have to touch the clock's place and then back to home screen to see the clock and that too, till the time , i am in home screen.
    4. Play some videos and your cell will become too hot to touch it. Feels like it will burn out.
    5. My very old Nokia 2650 has better sound. when someone calls me and i am not in a quiet place. I have to open speaker to listen the voice properly. I feel it's low compare to my oldest cell.
    6. Recently listened the songs on Nokia E63 with same headphone i use and the sound quality is much much better than my 5800.
    Features Missing
    1. Flv player does not give seekbar functionality. If i have a big video file say for 10 minutes and i want to see portion of it. I am not able to see. Either from start or from the place where it stopped. Why no seekbar like other players when play mp4.
Other than these, I have a long list of small small problems i face, since my cell is in Nokia care, i am not able to write them here.
If anyone else has the same problems, then please share here.

sunilgupta20801 : "1. I had a theme and a wallpaper in my cell other than default theme when i was doing a mass storage. As soon as i plugged the USB and it selected mass storage. This most be because you have the theme installed on the card which is what the mass storage uses. Reinstall it to your main memory.

  • Nokia 5800 - does it connect to Mercedes SIM ACCES...

I know the S60 operating system includes SAP in its bluetooth profiles, but I would like to be sure the NOKIA 5800 connects to Mercedes in the SAP profile before I buy one.  Does anyone have experience of this?

The N5800 express music connects OK to MB SAP & MB Bluetooth telephone modules.
With the standard BT modue you can make (dial on the phone only) and receive calls but the phonebook will not appear in the car system. The BT module uses the phones aerial so uses battery fast.
The SAP module will download the contents of the SIM card phone book and will record missed calls etc. I have not found a way to make text messaging work, and I have also found that once in SAP mode I cannot access the SIM card memory even when the phone is disconnected from the car.
Connection with both modules usually happens automatically but I have had issues with the SAP hanging and asking for PIN codes. These usually work OK but sometimes I have to restart the phone to make it all work OK. Overall it's a fag and I'm going to look for a better phone OS.

  • Keyboard local Nokia 5800

I want to ask development support it is possible to be developed for the Nokia 5800 keyboard with phonetic placement of keys in the Bulgarian language. The proposed standard keyboard with BDS use is available for writing with 10 fingers, but understand it is impossible to be located ten fingers on the screen 5800. Most of the users of this model in Bulgaria using the U.S. English keyboard, for writing in Bulgarian with Latin letters, because Bulgarian BDS has a different location letters. The next question is there a tool, that can configure the keyboard and install it in the phone. I guess that would be the easiest way to deal with many problems.
Thanks for the suggestions and assistance.

It wasnt removed. When in the alphanumeric keypad, just tilt your phone sideways to landscape mode and it will automatically show full qwerty. It only appears if you hold the phone in landscape. After all, what's it's use if you hold it in portrait.
If you find my post helpful please click the green star on the left under the avatar. Thanks.

  • Nokia 5800 Auto Fullscreen QWERTY??

    Hi All,
I normally just use the standard alpha numeric keypad for texting and such on my 5800. That suits me most of the time, but sometimes I like to switch to the fullscreen qwerty keyboard.
What I am wondering is, is there a setting or something that I am missing that would allow me to have the the alpha numeric keypad as my default and when I rotate the phone the fullscreen qwerty keyboard is activated?

After upgrade Nokia 5800 firmware to v40.0.005, the full screen QWERTY keyboard is missing from the input method shortcut (as shown in the screenshot).
But, you can easily turn on or enable the full screen QWERTY at wish:
    1) Click the input method icon and select “Alphanumeric keypad”,
    2) Rotate the touchscreen to landscape mode (horizontal mode, if you want to call that).
Voila, there is the full-size QWERTY keyboard appears automatically :-)

It is good news that firmware update for Nokia 5800 was released already. New firmware v.21 is available. If you also own a 5800, just follow the simple instruction to update your v20 or v10 to the newest v21.
Make sure that your battery is full (VERY IMPORTANT)
    1. Go to Dial screen and press *#0000#
    2. Press Options -> Check for updates
    3. Connect to the Internet with any APN (WiFi is recommended, however EDGE is fast enough for this). 4. Wait until the download finished. Phone will launch the dialog asking for update, just press Now. 5. Press Accept and Accept and the phone will be switched to Updating mode.
    6. It takes around 10 minutes to update, so be patient. After that, the phone will be rebooted automatically.
    7. Check by *#0000# again. Congrats! Your 5800 is now v21!
As I can see, there are so many improvements and worth to update for example, better camera functionality and the phone operates faster than previous version.
Best Settings for Video Playback on Nokia 5800 Xpress Music
Nokia 5800 as the multimedia phones makes you able to enjoy watching the video and music with it. The question is, how’s to do to convert that videos and what are the best setting used for. I have convert many videos into my phone, I found that most video files can play with this phone such as mp4, 3gp, rmvb and flv files. But of them plays well but some are not. After many tries, I finally got the best results for Nokia video files. My video in 5800 was full screen, high quality and sounds very well. Here are my settings:
    Video Resolution: 480*320
    Video Bitrate: 768 kbps
    Audio Bitrate: 128 kbps
Video Format: MPEG-4 (be sure not to use H264, as it’s not supported in the current firmware)
    Audio Format: MP3
    Audio Channels: 2 Channels
You can apply these settings above in whatever application you used when converting videos into 5800. Then I am sure you will get full screen, high quality and flawless video in your phone.
Settings for video playback on Nokia N97, N95, N85 and other Nokia phones.
Nokia N97: Video playback formats are 3GP formats, Flash Video, H.264/AVC, MPEG-4; the video resolution is 360*640. Audio formats are AAC, M4A, MP3, WAV, WMA etc.
Nokia N96: video playback formats are 3GP, Flash video, H.264/AVC, MPEG-4, RealVideo, WMV 9; the video resolution is 240*320. Audio formats are AAC, MP3, WAV, WMA etc.
Nokia N95: video playback formats are MP4, 3GP. Video resolution is up to 640*480, audio format is AAC stereo.
Nokia N85: video playback formats are 3GP formats, Flash video, H.264/AVC, MPEG-4, and WMV. The resolution is 240*320. The audio formats are AAC, M4A, MP3, WAV and WMA etc.
OK, I will not list all settings of Nokia phones. If you are interested you may get more relative information on Nokia official website.
How to transfer video files into Nokia 5800
I have download some videos from video website such as Youtube, Google video. But I can’t watch these videos in my phone. As these videos were flv files, Nokia 5800 can’t play such videos. I use Internet Tablet Video Converter to convert it, but it shows “Unsupported Video File Type”. Then I got to know some best video converter  that seems professional for Nokia phone, I free download its trial version and tried it, and it works very well. Below are what I do:
Click Add button to add video files from your computer, set your videos according to the above settings and select Nokia 5800 Video MPEG-4 format for your video. Then just click convert button to start the conversion. After the conversion complete, you may watch these videos with Nokia 5800.
Also you may get music from video in this way. But pay attention to the format. As Nokia 5800 support mp3 audio format, you should select “MP3 – MPEG Layer-3 Audio (*.mp3)”.
How to convert DVD files into Nokia 5800
Obviously phones don’t have DVD drives, so to watch DVD on a phone you have to convert it into a video file on your PC then drag it into your phone. I also follow the above settings and convert DVD files into MPEG-4 video with Daniusoft DVD Ripper. the results are excellent.
After insert your DVD into the DVD Drive click the Open DVD button to upload DVD files on to this program. Click Settings button to set your videos according to the above settings I listed. Click Profile drop list to select “Nokia 5800 Video MPEG-4 (*.mp4)” format for your Nokia video. Then click Convert button to start the conversion. In few minutes the whole process will completed.
If you select audio format “MP3 – MPEG Layer-3 Audio (*.mp3)” you may also get music from DVD.
To transfer files into Nokia 5800
In the above tutorial I have explain you how to convert Nokia videos from DVD and other video files. Then you need to transfer these videos into your phone.
    1. Make sure your computer and phone are both switched on. Also make sure your 5800 have a memory card in its slot.
    2. Plug the small end of the microUSB cable into the phone’s USB socket, which s under a plastic flap in the top left corner.
    3. Plug the larger end of the microUSB cable into a USB port on your computer.
    4. On your 5800 it should ask which mode you wish to use. Choose “Mass Storage”.
    5. Open the memory card window (probably called “Removable Disk E:”), drag your video files into the video folder.
    6. After finished transfer files, do not disconnect the cable yet. You should make it safe to disconnect the cable. You may do this by click a small icon in the bottom right corner of the screen that appears when the phone is connected.
    7. After you have made the device safe to remove, you can unplug the cable at both ends.
Some useful tips to make the Nokia 5800's battery last as long as possible
Sometimes you may have to stop talking with your friend or watching videos with your phone as low power of your battery. It is more inconvenient if you are in travel and have no alternative battery. Here are some tips to make your phone battery last as long as possible when using telephone.
Do not switch the phone off. As switching a phone on uses far more battery power than simply leaving the phone on.
    Shut down unnecessary applications.
Turn down the 5800’s screen brightness to the lowest acceptable level.
Switch off your 5800’s screen when not in use.
Use headphones instead of speakers when listening to music or watching movies.
Avoid using the camera flash unnecessarily.
    Use 2G instead of 3G.
    Switch off Bluetooth and/or Wi-Fi.'

  • Nokia 5800 Questions.

I posted this in the nokia 5800 problems topic but it actually wasn't a problem and also it got ignored. So I decided to post it in a new topic.
I just bought this phone 4 days ago and I am in total love with it Now the pros of this phone are too much to list but there are a few cons which slight bugged me.I have version11.0.008 from the begining and have not faced a single problem - no lag , no peculiar behaviour Now I have a few queries that I was hoping to get answered on.
    1. Is it possible to add more stuff below the Search word in the Shortcut bar theme. Maybe a Calendar memo reminder or anything. I already know of the music now playing bar that comes there during tracks but other than that are there nothing else to be done?
    2. Is there any way to use the 2nd camera?
    3. In the silent mode , for some odd reason I might have missed a call ( i.e did not feel the vibration ) Now is there a option to turn on so that the phone will emit little vibrations after a period of time to remind me or notify me of a miss call? I have this on my razrv3i so missing it now The menu button just flickrs on off to notify of the missed call but is there no way to know I have a miss call without taking out the phone from the case and looking at it?
    4. I heard theres a new update to v11.0.009 - But my NSU doesn't show it . I was wondering is it that necessary to update to this firmwire at this moment? I live in Bangladesh.
Thats about it The 5800 is a exta ordinary phone and I have not regretted my purchase yet and have no hope of doing so. It costed me around 272.74 Euros. The price to quality ratio is mind bogling

    1. The Calender memo will show by itself if you have any entry made in the Calender.. It will come up as "Next Entry on ..." a few days in advance and the Actual details a day before...
    2. Open Camera application.. Goto Options -- > Use secondary camera..
    3. There are 3rd party applications like T-Reminder for this.. It has options of Sound/Light/Vibration reminders for missed calls / SMSs / other events at user defined interval...
    4. Firmware versions are different for different regions.. Connect the phone thru' OVI Suit to a computer and check for the latest available for your phone. It says that version upgrade is for good but there are newer complains associated with them. So its up to you whether to take that risk or not.. If you are satisfied with the current version so be it..

  • Problem with NOKIA 5800 Music Express

    Hi all,
My NOKIA 5800 hasnt been working properly for some time. I can not make a call using my phone book (only if i dial the number i can call) though incoming call can be received. Apart from that, when i try to navigate tomy memory card, i cant anything rather than some less important files though i can find those floders when using via pc! Lots of other problems.
From this discussion (/t5/Phone-Applications/Antivirus-for-5800/m-p/426338) i find out that its not necessary to use antivirus if properly used. But the thing is, i let my mom and sister use this phone for like 6 months, there was internet connection. So, i am not sure whether they did something wrong which led to these problems. Before that everything was fine.
Help me guys! I am freaking out!
    Thanks all!

Note: virus cant infect ur device memory.. But it can infect ur memory card nd corrupt it.. So scan ur memory card wd antivirus on computer... If no virus is found and ur card is unreadable, format ur memory card.. Before formattin backup data as much possible..
    Hope this helps.
