Nokia 6230 question (manual operator selection)

When I go: Menu > Settings > Phone Settings > Operator Selection > Manual I get a list of networks.  I'm being trying to establish the relative strength of these networks and was wondering if the order has any significance.  I'm pretty sure that the first operator in the list is likely to be the strongest, and was wondering if I can deduce if the others are in order of signal strength.
Can anyone confirm this?

not necessarily, it provides you with the list of operators but you can't use all of them, you can only use the provider that you have the sim card for. click on a option from non provider, you should not be able to have any service as your options are dependent on your sim card/opearator/mobile network provider.

  • Manual operator selection BUG!!!

I have an N73 phone. When i am abroad roaming and i use the manual operator selection the phone reverts to automatic operator selection within a minute and overrides my previous manual selection. I find this bug very irritating and i think nokia should post a solution ASAP. Anybody any ideas?
    Nik

I did few test with different SIM card from different operator and at least for me seems that only TRE (Italy) and THREE (uk and ireland) are blocking the manual operator selection.
When instead i used TIM (Italy) , or VODAFONE (italy or ireland) the operator selection was stick to MANUAL.
I have a N95 unbranded latest firmware. but the same BUG is with my N73ME.
Using a Samsung i600 with Microsoft WM6 the operator selection di work with all my SIM card .
Does anybody have any idea why the Symbian s60v3 have this bug?

  • 5230 manual operator selection problem

    Hi,
I recently detected that the manual operator selection does not behave as intended with my 5230 (Software release 20.0.005). I wanted to manually select "tre" in italy because I'm "drei"-customer in austria and 3 has this nice 3LikeHome feature where you have no roaming costs when you use a 3 network in a foreign country. So I switched the operator selection to be manual and after the nework search I selected 3 as provider. But as soon as I was out of the reception range of the selected network the phone automatically selected another network although the user manual says that if the connection to the manually selected network is lost, the device sounds an error tone and asks you to reselect a network. Can anyone confirm this behaviour?
    Thanks,
    Gerhard

Sim card are activated only for one particular operator provider, selecting the other only means that the sim is not for the other one. In locations where there are plenty of providers you'll find as many as there are & being in manual you have to be certain which one. In automatic mode, it queries one after the other in round robin fashion until it gets an access. I've noticed that too, that different models of Nokia phone have diferent strenght of radio signals transmit/recieve. It's not surprising to to see one model have more bars (signal strenght) than others.

  • E65 won't remember manual operator selection (roam...

    Hi,
while roaming, I can't get my e65 to remember manual operator selection, the setting will only last for one call, and then go back to automatic.
My operator(3 Austria)'s service hotline claims that this is an issue in ALL Nokia handsets and can't be solved. I find this hard to believe, as that behaviour oft the phone is clearly a bug. If anything, I could imagine 3 gives out all the Nokia handsets (or not just the Nokia phones, but all of them) with this bug installed to make more money out of roaming fees.
    Any similar experiences?
Any ideas if and how this could be fixed?
    thanks, Ben
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
I found something like a workaround for this problem.
    here goes:
If you can't disable automatic operator selection, switch the network mode from dual (jumping between umts and gsm) to umts only. that way, in countries that have 3, you will almost always get 3 automatically selected, maybe because it doesn't have a gsm-signal but just umts.
I don't know though about other operators in other countries, probably this method is always going to get you the operator with the strongest umts signal.
    cheers, Ben

  • Manual operator selection not sticking

    Hello
I use international roaming on a daily basis.
I am using a N95, when i go into networks/operator selection/manual selection. I select my network manually and it is fine.
However it seems like whenever a stronger signal is detected it swaps , doesnt matter what network its on to.
I have had my mobile swapped, with no effect, i have debranded the phone with no change, I loaded the latest firmware with no change.
Can anyone let me know if this is another **bleep** im not adult enough to look make my own choices 'feature' on the nokia n95

very strange, when i'm abroad and i loose signal from one operator the phone will prompt to select another, it wont automatically lock on,
does it really matter who your roaming with? so long as u have signal that's all dat matters.

  • Manual Operator Selection

    Hi
I have an factory unlocked 3gs and live in an area where the signals from mobile operators from a border country can be picked up. Occasionally, my Iphone changes operator automatically due to it picking up a stronger signal and the problems are obvious (namely that I get charged for receiving calls as I am roaming).
So, my question is, can the Iphone be made to only switch to another operator upon request (such as all other mobile phones). I've gone through the obvious parts of the menus (network etc) but cant seem to find a way to do it...
    Many thanks

Turn off automatic network selection. I think it's a case here of you can't have your cake, and eat it

  • Nokia E71 Manual Network selection Problems

    HI
I have the E71 on the Three network and it allows roaming in this country (something thats usually locked off) to avoid roaming charges I went to change the phones network select option from Automatic to manual, I get the usual pop up to select the network I want to connect to but when I go back to the network options screen it shows as automatic and does indeed allow roaming. How do I actually change to manual network selection.
    Cheers

I can't believe that Nokia have not resolved this problem.
The problem gives a direct influence on the cost of calls, which is very excessive.
I spent 3 hours on the phone to Three to try to resolve the problem and nothing worked. Tried removing sim card and putting it back in, factory reset and hard reset.
For a regular traveler this phone is a nightmare. Call charges can range from £0.25p to £1.50 and 0.12p to 0.25p. Also call charges may be applicable in the UK depending on your network provider.
Quite simply not fit for its purpose. A mobile phone by definition is "a hand-held mobile radiotelephone for use in an area divided into small sections, each with its own short-range transmitter/receiver provided by a specific network carrier".
Unfortunately the phone does not meet this definition. Under the Trade Descriptions Act of 1968 should be entitled to a refund as customers have been mislead by the sale of the handset. Also the phone directly misleads roaming customers.
Also under the Sale of Goods Act of 1979 the mobile phone should be "fit for purpose". Unfortunately the E71 is not fit for purpose as a mobile phone does not meet its definition and as a customer the network provider does not provide a fair service carried by the network. Most networks are contractually bound to do so.
If you have a problem with this phone please contact Nokia or your provider to try to resolve the problem and push the new firmware as soon as possible!

  • Nokia 6230 car hands free ACI question

    hello there,
I was trying to connect my nokia 6230 to the car's audio AUX input in order to be able to listen to MP3.
I have a very good knowkedge in Electronics, so i did some changes in the hands-free car kit.
question is : I noticed that when the car kit is connected to the phone (& the car icon appears), the audio output becomes MONO, which means I can't really enjoy stereo MP3 (with my change I bypasssed the car kit's speaker output with relay only when call is active).
the audio out pins of the pop port are at pins 11-14.
BUT - again - when car kit is attached, output pins 13-14 are inactive (only mono from pins 11-12 is available)
does anyone know how to hack this further more so it becomes stereo ? (I guess it is something with the ACI protocol ?? (pin 3))
    thanks,
    TOM

The phone is only seeing your "modification" as the basic the mono headset. It needs to recognise the ACI chip in the headset, that tells the phone whats plugged in and therefore what audio paths to turn on. Unless you can mimic the ACI info (copywright infringement so be aware)the phone wont open the second audio path.Message Edited by megadodo on 06-Sep-200704:16 PM

  • PC Suite 6.85.12.0 with a Nokia 6230 Doesn't Sync ...

My phone is a Nokia 6230.
My computer is an IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T42 running Windows XP Professional SP2.
I'm using a Bluetooth connection to synchronize the phone with Outlook.
    The system info is:
    Operating system:
    Microsoft Windows XP
    Build 2600
    Service Pack 2
    Language: English
    Language for non-Unicode programs: English
    Locale: English
    Input language: English
    Nokia PC Suite:
    Version 6.84.10.3
    Language: English
    Connectivity Cable Drivers:
    Version 6.84.4.0
    PC Connectivity Solution:
    Version 7.22.7.1
    Microsoft Outlook:
    Version 11.0
    Build 8169
    Bluetooth stack:
    Microsoft Bluetooth stack
    Version 5.1.2600
    Build 2180
Yesterday I received the message informing me that there was an upgrade available to PC Suite 6.85.12.0. I've had no real problems with 6.84.10.3 but it has a few quirks:
When I synchronize PCS 6.84 with Outlook I have to do it twice. The first time I get a message "Connected to (computer)" on the phone display. The synchronization then ends with a warning message in the last report
    PC Sync information.
The mobile phone has not responded.
    Possible Solution
Please ensure your phone is in the standby mode, then restart the Synchronization.
If I sync again within a minute the synchronization succeeds. After a minute of no activity the phone displays a message "Disconnected from (computer)" and I am back in the original state.
I can live with this. I just have to hit "Synchronize now" twice about five seconds apart.
The second problem I had was with transferring a largish music file (6 Mbytes) to the phone. I tried several times and it got truncated but I got enough of it (a minute's worth) to be a useful ringtone so I left it at that.
I thought I'd give PCS 6.85 a try and see if a release that promises stability fixes would clear up these quirks. What I ended up with is a release that wouldn't synchronize at all. Every time I tried to synchronize it failed. I would get the "Connected to (computer)" message on the phone follwed about one second later by "Disconnected from (computer)" and the same warning as shown above in the report log.
I then tried to back out to PCS 6.84.10.3. This version, and an older one as well wouldn't work now either. It took me many hours of hair pulling, head scratching, Googling, and experimentation to get back to the version and behavior I had started out with.
Since I didn't see this procedure stated explicitly anywhere let me describe the steps it took.
    1) From the control panel remove PC Suite.
    2) From the Control Panel remove Cable Connectivity Drivers.
At this point I thought I could just install an older version but the older versions didn't work now either. I then read about PCS Cleaner. So I downloaded that (version 3.6) and tried to run it and got the rather confusing message:
"PC Suite Cleaner does not support this version of Nokia PC Connectivity Solution (version number). Please contact Nokia support."
I then tried manually cleaning PCS files and registry but I only made things worse. Finally after many futile attempts it dawned on me that the above message meant "First remove PC Connectivity Solution" so:
    3) From the control panel remove PC Connectivity solution.
    4) Now PCS Cleaner 3.6 agreed to launch and I was able to scrub the machine.
    5) Finally I could reinstall PC Suite. Reinstalling PC Suite 6.85.12.0 gave me the same no synchronization problem. Repeating the whole procedure with PCS 6.84.10.3 brought my system back to its original state.
I have since again received theadvisory message that a new version of PC Suite is available. Needless to say I am now studiously ignoring it. I do not have the time or patience to work on this again until someone offers a workaround/fix for this problem.
    Any ideas?

SOLUTION AT LAST!! (as dumb as it may be)
-- This posts refers to an older version of PC Suite than mine, but I suspect the situation (and the problem) is very similar.
    Hey everyone!
It's been hours of forum searching and reading million of suggestions how to make my 6230 sync with the *several* latest versions of Nokia PC Suite (HELLO! NOKIA ARCHITECHTS! You have some serious recurring problem here! Don't abandon the veterans in your client base, it reflects really bad on you service-wise! At least post an official message that you acknowledge the problem and that you're working on it!)
Seems that tons of people encountered my exact problem:
Connection works, pairing works, file copying works, synchronisation doesn't work.
Well, the forums mentioned that the older older versions of PC Suite had a very quick timeout problem, so one had to synchronise twice, fast, in order for sync to succeed.
Now, it seemed like the timeout was reduced to almost "0", and disconnection immediately followed connection.
So, even though I did not see any second confirmation message (normally the phone shows a request to "connect" and then a second request to "transfer data" ) - I thought maybe it was there only disappearing very fast. So I decided to simply click twice fast, and I mean REALLY FAST, on the main button to accept, hoping that the connection will be kept. And VOILA! The connection was kept, and the sync was successful.
I know it's not a permanent solution, but for me, for now, considering how hard (why is it hard, Nokia??) and annoying it is to revert to a much older version of PC Suite - it's at least a temporary solution that works. And the only one I've found so far.
    ================================
    Specifications:
    Phone: Nokia 6230
    Firmware: 04.44, 21-09-04
    PC Suite: 6.86.9.0
    MS Windows: XP SP2
    MS Outlook: 2003 SP3
    ================================
I wonder if that would work for everyone.
If so please spread the word, seems that lots of people would like to know that. At least until a decent fix will be released for the PC Suite, that is.
    Cheers,
    Ohad

  • PC Suite 6.8 - Nokia 6230 - Connects ok but no Syn...

    Hi.
Finally got 6.8 to install on my Windows Xp SP2 machine.
Had the previous version installed and working ok. Had to uninstall/reinstall several times and use many of the fixes listed on this site to finally get 6.8 installed.
Phone connects via bluetooth ok and I can see files on the phone and transfer them back and forth.
PC Suite main window shows Nokia 6230 connected via Bluetooth.
Select synchronize. PC Sync window opens with Not Connected shown at the top of the form. The Synchronise Now and Settings buttons are greyed out. If I push Select Phone nothing happens.
Anyone any idea what the problem is ?

If you open File Manager in PC Suite and locate your phone at the left panel (you must have folders view in Windows Explorer), scroll to contacts folder under the phone, select update button phone with arrow in the upper area of the file manager window, do you get your contacts updated to PC from the phone ?
Just asking this question to narrow down the problem causes, if you get the contact to File Manager/Nokia Phone Browser, your syncronisation with the phone is propably OK, but the PC Sync application is stuck.
Another thing that may help PC Sync to realise the phone is connected is to open manage connections and untick the bluetooth option and then tick it back.
The is also a separate exit option in PC Sync, if you locate the jingjang symbol from Windows tray(bottom right of your screen)right click the icon you can see exit. Choose that and then reopen PC Sync from PC Suite main view.
OK, opend file manager from PC Suite.
The folder structure I see is
    My Bluetooth places->Entire Blutooth Neighborhood->Nokia 6230->
The only subfolder from this level is OBEX file transfer and below that are graphics,Images,Memory Card, Music files,Recordings,Tones,Video Clips
I don't see any contacts folder.
I can go into the memory card folder, see my music tracks and transfer them back and forth.
    Tried unticking/ticking. Makes no difference
Tried closing/reopening PC Sync, no difference.
If I click on the phone icon Nokia 6230 just below Entire bluetooth neighborhood then the right hand panel shows
Audio Gateway on Nokia 6230 (not connected)
COM1 on Nokia 6230 (not connected)
Dial Up Networking on Nokia 6230
Nokia PC Suite on Nokia 6230 (not connected)
OBEX file transfer on Nokia 6230
OBEX Object Push on Nokia 6230
If I double click Nokia PC Suite on Nokia 6230 it changes to show connected. If I right click on the icon and select status the signal strength shows GOOD, but after a minute or two the phone beeps and the icon changes back to not connected.
I noticed that after open/close PC Synch the first time I am no longer able to select Manage Connections. I have to reboot the machine before Manage connections will work again.
Throughout all of this, the icon in the system tray is saying that the Nokia 6230 is connected via Bluetooth.
Why is this so god damn difficult ??

    Please Help me...
Sorry if a wrote something wrong, i don't speak english. I speak spanish.
    Thanks.

Problem just solved. I installed Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP2 operating system and now it works perfectly, so the problem was just that the performance edition operating system caused the drivers not installing properly. But now I have another kind of a problem. I am using the N96 as a modem for Internet. I can only get a speed of approx 45kb/s, while I have got almost 110kb/s with another computer using the same cable. Is it caused because of the USBv1.1 slow USB version? But shouldn't it still be able to do better than 45kb/s, while it transfers files with OK speeds? When I use the Bluetoothv1 USB Dongle, it works with about the same speed but only when using the performance edition, not when using the home original OS. When using home edition OS it works about 5kb/s, but it could have been just temporary. But my main question is, still, that how could I get the speed faster? I have installed the windows KBxxxxxxx patch, but still it works pretty slow, just about half of the speed it is supposed to work.

    Does NOKIA 6230 Support themes?
    * )if yes kindly tell me how? & whats it type??does it need any program ???!!
    *) if noo thx alot?

Why does the Malaysian Nokia website say that a 6300 supports wma when the uk one says it doesn't?
Nokia Music Manager doesn't have support for WMA. So how then do you copy wma music to the phone?
My version of Nokia Music Manager has an option to search my PC for music, but doesn't find anything! I have some MP3 and mostly WMA. With MP3 selected it still doesn't find anything.
My experience with Nokia Suite over the past 6 years is less than favourable. Any free alternatives out there?
Do I have to get a Micro SD to SD converter and copy the files to the Micro SD card to get it to work?
Software supplied is not exactly slick!

  • Nokia 208 problems with Opera Mini

I have a Nokia 208 (Single SIM) and I can not install Opera Mini on him. The application is downloaded but not installed. When I want to install the application, it shows me: "Installing ..." and remains locked so. And after some time it says: "Unable to connect to the internet. Please chech your settings". I tried several versions of Opera Mini and same problem. I downloaded from Nokia Store and m.opera.com site, etc., and the same problem. Other applications on the phone I saw that it works. And I can surf the internet, the problem is only with Opera Mini. Internet provider is Vodafone Romania. So how can I solve this problem? Or Nokia 208 (Single SIM) is not compatible with Opera Mini? Thanks!

We have several reports of this issue. In one case, it was solved by creating the configuration settings manually which made sure both the Access Point and the Web account are configured correctly. Your description only tells us, the Web configuration is OK.
To solve this issue finally, I would like to go this path again first:
Nokia » Menu » Settings » Configuration » Personal » New » Access Point » Access Point settings » Bearer settings » Mobile data access point (APN) » internet.vodafone.ro
Nokia » Menu » Settings » Configuration » Activate » Access Point » My access point

  • X3-02 "roaming" manual network selection reverts

    Hi,
As the header states, I wish to lock my phone to the "roaming" network. The phone successfully connects to roaming for a few minutes, then frustratingly reverts to it's Home network automatically.
It can be seen that the menu option also reverts back to "Automatic" network selection.
    The conditions are as follows:
3G 'Three' 900Mhz - very poor reception that drops out
    3G 'Roaming' 850Mhz - perfect reception
Please advise how to make the manual selection stick.

  • Restoring backup from nokia 6230 to nokia 6233

    Hi there.
I am using Windows XP SP2 with Nokia Connectivity Cable CA53 and PC Suite version 6.80.22
My problem is when I backup my 6230 via USB and select phone memory only , it backs up fine aside from warning me that certain items are content protected.
When I restore this backup to my 6233 via USB and select restore abd then select the option to restore contacts , calendar , etc and then OK , Content Copier tells me that restoring contents from another phone model to the connected phone may result in all the information not being restored , once I click ok on this , it starts the restore process.
What happens then is that after 28% , Content Copier tells me that restoring the backup was aborted due to inadequate space on the phone , and that only partial content was transferred.
I then browse through my contacts on the 6233 and see that its the same as whats on the 6230 BUT I don't have any of the messages that was on my 6230 transferred to the new phone.
Any ideas or help or suggestions or what , I need exactly what is on my 6230 to be on my 6233.

This is tricky and from what I have learned so far I suspect this may be a current bad feature of PC Suite. I think it is so overly conserned about not overwriting anything on the new phone, that it is very picky of the memory availability (or something )
Anyways, so is your new phone totally empty or does it contain already data that you have put there ? Would you be able to empty the "target" phone and try the restore then, if that helps ? (for example, if you have images, move them to PC, if you have calendar items, add those to the old phone first, also contacts you can syncronise to PC first and then later when restore is successful(hopefully), you can resyncronise the additional contacts to your target phone.
If you can empty the target phone, then run factory settings to it, battery boot and then run a fresh backup from "source" phone and try restore.
Really interested in hearing will you get this sorted...
