Nokia 700 not receiving SMS until power cycled

I have not had any replies to a lot of SMS messages for a few days. Then I turned the phone off and back on and a load of messages were delivered within a few minutes.
However I had been using the phone for phone calls throughout that time.
It sounds like a bug...
It is latest firmware and on Vodafone.

My Vodafone SIM card is brand new.
Looking at the above post, it does sound like a bug.
This explanation was posted in usenet and is very interesting:
Most people are aware that it is store and forward in that the message
doesn't go from your mobile to the destination one but rather via
something akin to a post office (the SMSC) which works out how to
deliver it to the destination mobile,  delivers it if it can and if not
holds it until it can deliver it.
As ever, the devil is in the detail, first of all deliveries to
destination mobiles are not universally successful (1% or so seem to
fail even if you know the mobile is available and has full signal) and
in general (although not always) SMSCs have a timer based retry to get
around that,  but sometimes the error specifies that the mobile is
really not there and hence the SMSC needs to set what is known as the
Message Waiting Data (MWD) in the Home Location Register (HLR) (the
database in the network that is always queried for your profile and
settings when you come into service in a new area).
When you next appear in a new area,  the Visited Location Register (VLR
- the local database at your new location,  generally controls roughly
100 cell sites or so) queries the HLR for your details and this query is
meant to cause the HLR to Alert the SMSC that you have appeared and to
make a new attempt to deliver the messages.
However, notice the occurrence of "new" area - if you hadn't actually
left the area and there was just a routing issue or a momentary loss of
signal then it can be hours (or potentially days) until a regular update
to the HLR occurs and you'll get your messages.
Now, also, all of these things have addresses in the network that need
to be configured and routed correctly,  and if 99%+ of the traffic is
successful (as it goes down a delivery route that works right) then it's
often very difficult for the networks to track down (particularly if it
only causes an unwanted delay and they get their revenue eventually anyway).
Of course, it could also be a phone bug that tries to say to the SMSC
"not right now",  but actually comes out with something like "my memory
is full and I'll tell you when I have space" (and it never does the the
latter).
None of that has anything to do with data and BB services though - data
is another can of worms that is very much a case of standards by committee.
I wonder if a phone firmware bug can cause this network behaviour?

  • HELP - not receiving sms on android after using ichat

For the past 3 months, I have lost the ability to receive SMS texts about once a month.
The first time it happened right after I sent somone an ichat on my ipad. Up until then, I had not used ichat for about one year, which is when I went from an iPhone to an android (and I have not used it since then either). I did some research online and found some suggestions on how to fix the issue. A few forums suggested removing my cell phone # from my Apple Support profile. A few others said to change my apple password. I did both and my messages started coming in about 3 days after they stopped.
About 3 weeks later, I stopped receiving them again. I looked at my Apple Support profile and found that my cell phone # had been added back in. Thinking that maybe Apple has some job that runs every so often and repopulates information on blank fields, I removed my cell phone # again and entered a bogus #.
Couple days ago I stopped receiving texts again. I looked at my Apple Support profile and found that the bogus # is still listed so that was not what fixed it the first time.
I have called ATT (my carrier) repeatedly and they have tried to trouble shoot my problem with no success. They suggest that it's only something that Apple can fix. I have also called Apple and they suggest that it's an ATT issue. No one has been able to help me. It really surprises me that this is not a known issue with a fix.
So here is the problem in a nutshell:
I am not receiving sms texts on my android, from anyone at all.. doesn't matter what kind of phone they have or who their carrier is.
    I DO receive mms texts.
All of my texts are going through no probelm.
Does anyone have any clue how I can stop this from happening every few weeks? I want to stick with my current phone until the next iPhone comes out. Any leads on this issue are greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!!

I just don't understand what you mean by "invites". What kind of "invite" did you send "from another gmail to gmail"?
What about a simple email? Do you receive simple email messages to that address?

  • N9 not receiving SMS's

A friend of mine has an N9 and it's not receiving SMS's.
What could the problem be and what could they do to get it working again?
They've tried restarting the phone, and sending an SMS to themself.

    @CLTSchwartz
Would be interested if this has started after updating to latest v30.2012.07-1_PR_001 or not. Strange as you might expect to receive SMS but not send if issues with message centre number. It might be an idea to check in Settings > Applications > Messages > Message centre number - where default is to use from SIM card:

  • Could send, but not receive SMS messages until today - Can I retrieve the SMS messages that never came in?

I didn't realize until today, but I haven't been receiving SMS messages for two weeks.  I'm pretty sure it started when I sent an MMS message. People have been getting my messages, but I haven't received any SMS sent to me.  Today I reset my phone and was able to receive an SMS that I asked someone to send.
Is there any way to retrieve the SMS messages from the last two weeks that didn't come in on my phone?
    I have a Curve 8900

    Hi,
As far as sms r concerned, that were sent to u around 2 weeks ago cannot be retrieved because of the reason that sms do have a time period for being delivered, else r self destroyed.
In other words, suppose a sms has 24 hrs time for delivery and for any reason the sms is not  being delivered in that given time period to the specified number, then the sms will automatically get erased/destroyed depending on the netwrok provider.
    Sorry for ur loss...

  • Airport Extreme - Slow until power cycle every few hours (wired, not modem)

I have the latest Airport Extreme Base Station (no time capsule) connected to a Motorola Surfboard 6121 modem.
When wired directly to the AEBS I get download speeds of 90Mbps+, but after a few hours (I haven't determined if it is consistent) the dowloand speed drops to about 1-4Mbps. Power cycling the cable modem brings back the original speeds.
Please Note: When wired directly to the cable modem the speed of 90Mbps+ are consistent over several days (I haven't tested longer).
The drop in speed only happens when connecting through the AEBS, no matter if I'm connected wirelessly or directly.
My next test will be to see whether powercycling only the AEBS resets the speed the way powercylcing the modem does.
Any thoughts? I would rather not have to restart my connection everytime I go to use it.
    Thanks!

The issue happens when I have the following setup:
    MacbookPro (mid-2008) wired directly into:
AEBS (brand new, no time capsule) wired directly into:
    Motorola Surfboard 6121
    or
Samsung BD-5900 Blu-Ray Player (2013) wired directly into:
AEBS (brand new, no time capsule) wired directly into:
    Motorola Surfboard 6121
    or
MacbookPro (mid-2008) and two iPhone 5 devices all wirelessly connected to
AEBS (brand new, no time capsule) wired directly into:

  • Nokia 5800 not receiving texts problem!

Hi guys Bought the Nokia 5800 about 2 weeks ago and all has been fine with it until recently.....
Ive done no modifications of upgrades or played about with any of the settings..
But now for some reason im not receiving text messages when they are sent??
The only way I can get them is by either sending one, turning my phone off then back on or by going into message settings and selecting view sim messages then the message will pop up....
But I have to do this everytime which is quite annoying! I can do everything else fine....send messages, ring people receive calls etc.
Ive rang vodaphone and 5 times they have fobbed me off with different things to try and none have worked....Ive tried the hard reset and still nothing!
Is anybody else having this problem, or does anyone know a solution to fix it?
    Thanks

I haved the same problem and I think I solved it, and it works (right now and hopefully also in future).
    I have 5800XM with latest firmware upgrade - V30.0.011
THIS IS NOT NEEDED BUT USEFULL
Connect your phone (with phone battery loaded on full) to PC. Make backup of your phone data. Menu START, Nokia, Nokia Ovi, Content Copier
If you have V20 or V21... *#0000#  - select this combination as a phone number to check what version do you have. If you have V20 you can update firmware to V21 via NSU (Nokia Software Updater). All international language versions beside English are corrupt (last week I checked, maybe something changed) so better use English version because it's always latest, fresh etc. ALWAYS read what NSU talk to you on the screen.
If you have already V21, update to V30 you can do only from phone. You must have access to stable WIFI connection (because file to download is something like 5MB size) and phone battery loaded on full. I'm using Polish language so I don't know how it's named in English but... Press middle button twice, go to Preferences, go to Phone and find icon with arrow ("Phone management" or something like that) then phone icon with arrow straight down - this is responsible for firmware update.
THIS IS IMPORTANT IF YOU ARE AFTER FIRMWARE UPDATE (OR IF YOU HAVE BASIC FIRMARE VERSION)  AND DON'T GET NEW MESSAGE INDICATION AND/OR NEW SMS SOUND INDICATION
Press middle button twice, go to Preferences, go to Phone and find icon with arrow - "Phone management" or something like that, then pure phone icon - "Factory settings" or something like that. Some window arrive, click OK. This is not hardcore format, you don't loose anything.
After this operation you will have "clean screen" like straight from factory, so if you haved before little "tuned" screen and overall phone (added phonebook contacts from SIM card, selected wallpaper, different profile etc.)... you know what to do - tune it again. ;PP
I tested it. On different profiles (General, Outside - one hella loud profile on 5800 speakers, better don't use it rooms where silent is needed xD), with upcoming sms when screen was active, with upcoming sms when screen was locked - indication works with the sound!
Turning on/off phone registry logging (incoming/outgoing connections, sms etc.) got nothing to do with solving this problem.
Have hope it helps someone... This is for 5800 but what I see also other Nokia models have the same problem so maybe other users find this post usefull too.

  • Not Receiving SMS's

Hi All BB - Curve 8520 Carrier - CellC (South Africa) For the last week now I have not been receiving SMS's at all. I can send SMS's and I have confirmed that they are being received. All other services seem fine as well. It's just the SMS receiving problem. I have scoured the forums and have tried almost every suggestion, to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks

Unfortunately, we cannot know what you have already tried, so we risk wasting your time with redundant suggestions. Here's my first guess...
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness shows up, the first thing to try is a proper reboot:
Pre-BB10 Devices ONLY. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes.
See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
    Good luck!

  • HT3529 I am confused about messaging. Shouldn't I be able to send and receive messages with cellular data off?  I can usually send the message, but often do not receive messages until I either have wifi or turn cellular on.

I am confused about messaging. Shouldn't I be able to send and receive messages with cellular data off and without wifi? I can send the message but often do not receive messages from others, iPhone or other, until  I turn on cellular or wifi.

Depends on the type of Message.
SMS messages will send and receive with data off.  and while you can guarantee you send using SMS you cannot guarantee that whoever replies to you does also. They may be replying thorugh iMessage if they are using iPhones.
However Android should be sending through SMS.
You can turn off iMessage if you want to, though people with limtied SMS text messaging in their plans may not appreciate it, and stop messaging you.

  • Weird! Not receiving SMS (Texts) but have reception and 3G

    Hi all,
Haven't had a problem with my iphone 4 until i believe I upgraded to the 4.1 and changed the case.
Basically when I am at home and only appears to be at home and round the area I live I do not receive texts. The phone is showing 2 and 3 bars of reception, I can make calls, send text, send emails but for some reason not receiving texts. However when i make a phone call or receive one all of a sudden I get an influx of text messages come through.
I have reset the NETWORK SETTINGS
I have reset the ALL SETTINGS
I have restored the iphone through itunes
Can any one help to solve this problem?
    Cheers

In my opinion, this is probably just a reception issue at your home. If SMS works everywhere else but your home, I think the handset is fine. Do you live in a concrete bunker or steel building?
SMS uses the carrier or signalling channel and not necessarily the voice or data streams. It's the signalling channel that tells the phone that you have an incoming call or are making a phone call. So, theoretically, if you can make or receive a call, you should also be able to make/receive SMSs.
Please let us know what happens.

  • Since upgrading to IOS6, some of my contacts (using nokia) no longer receives sms from me, although it shows on my 4s phone that it was sent. I receive sms from these contacts though. These contacts are international numbers. What do I do to fix this? Thx

Since upgrading to IOS6 on my 4s, some of my sms messages (international) are no longer delivered to other phone users (nokia, etc.), even though it shows sent in the message screen. I do however receive sms messages from these numbers. These numbers are correct and I can call or receive calls on the same numbers. I would appreciate if someone can assist me so that my messages can be received again on international numbers. I think all my local numbers are working fine regarding messages. Thanks.

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.
    Best.

  • Auto Answer will NOT stay on after power cycle or reset - C20 TC7.3.0 UCM 10.5SU1 registration

As the title suggests, I've got 2 C20 codecs running the latest 7.3.0 code I can download registered to UCM 10.5.1 SU1.  Power cycling or resetting them causes the auto-answer to default to off.  There is still no way to change auto-answer from within UCM, and TMS cannot manage the device anymore.
I've found a couple of instances of this with older TC and UCM code, but it seems this issue continues today.
    Any ideas?

Saw that and it ended up being the right direction, but since I was on a different version I wasn't able to use that device pack.
So, I found out the following from TAC:
Auto-Answer became a configurable field presented to UCM in TC7.2.x, but the appropriate management fields on the web pages didn't become available until later in the device pack. I read through a couple of device pack readme's and I didn't see anything related, but sure enough installing 10.5.1.11005-2 presented the fields and that works fine now.

  • My C6-01 not receiving SMS

    Hi,
My C6-01 has stopped receiving SMSs after I upgraded to Symbian Anna last week. It always falsh when new SMS received but when I select show it does not display new SMS just old SMS from last week only. On home screen it flash that unread SMS icon but dont show SMS. I tried restart 3-4 times but its not receiving or probably not displaying new SMSs. I just have about 50 SMS in my existing inbox so space is not the issue. I appreciate any help.
    Thanks!

Thanks for your reply, you must have been right! since a day or 2 it's just started working again. I'm assuming indeed there was a problem with the provider, maybe the old messages were removed from the pipeline as you said and all is well now. I must say I love symbian anna, it's much smoother and much more stable. My phone hasnt crashed yet, as with the symbian^3 it came with, it did that a lot.
    cheers, sander
