Nokia 9500 - Front User Interface Screwing Up

For some strange reason the graphics on the front user interface on my 9500 get all scrambled up and messed up for no discernable reason. Initially, I thought that the problem was due to a possible low memory level or maybe a software conflict issue. However, I have performed a hard reset on several occassions and have run only the most minimal of applications with zero items added to the phone's memory and I have received the same result. Thankfully, the front interface is the only part of the phone that has given me any probelms. Can anyone out there help??? Please!!!

Send it back, my friend. This seems to be a serious error. My phone did the same. With only a few weeks to run for the warranty to end, I sent my phone to Nokia for repairs. The had to change the phone (I got a new IMEI) which meant that even they could not fix it.

Hi. Please make an update for nokia 500. It is very slow and also hangs.

hi mate, have you tried moving any media (photos, videos, music) to a memory card and checked via Nokia Suite on PC that you are up to date with the latest firmware for your device? also try re-installing the current firmware thru Nokia Suite, and failing the above, a hard reset may be in order.

  • Nokia's user interface and software A terrible e...

(hope this is in the right section, here goes)
I got my E63 about a month ago. I thought it only fair to list my grievances with the phone so far, because I am really close to selling it and buying something else, and I think Nokia deserves to know the reasons why, and will hopefully improve in the future.
I will start off with what I love about the phone, because I do in fact, really like it. The slim size, excellent keyboard, great connectivity like 3G and Wi-fi, and the reasonable battery life, make it a great phone, but its in the user interface, and actual usage of the phone, where things really start to fall flat.
The user interface is very disorganized and difficult.
Why is everything so hard to find and use? For example, if I want to change the applications that appear on my home screen, I need to navigate the following directory tree:
    Menu > Tools > Settings > General > Personalisation > Mode Settings > Home Screen Applications > Application Shortcuts > Shortcut 1
and then, when I finally get to the list, the items arent even in any order!
You must be joking, what a horrible menu! Its insane. As a user, I feel like its a terrible experience.
But thats not all. Why are there 2 notes applications on my phone? There's notes, and active notes. Why does Nokia OVI store exist twice, once in the main menu, and once under installations? Why do I have Contacts, and OVI contacts on my phone? Why can't my phone have just one app that works well, instead of 2 that differ slightly.
Why is email setup in the installations menu? Why isn't it under email, where mailboxes get set up? Its just sitting there cluttering up Installations, when its something you only use once or twice.
Not to mention the fact that the configuration settings are all over the place, i.e. there is an Email Key setting in Menu > Tools > Settings > General. Its all on its own, not near anything. Why isn't it in the same menu where the other shortcut keys get set? Or even in the email app settings?
I am not naive, I know that the E63 is on the cheaper end of the scale, so I can't expect it to be the fastest phone in the world, but scrolling through my email in HTML mode is so horribly slow, and the view tends to jump from left to right on some emails, I hardly even use the phone to check my email anymore, which is sad because that is the reason I chose the E63.( for the nice keypad and email syncing)
These are just SOME of the things that I have noticed. So please Nokia, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! Spend some of your R&D money on user interface and user experience!
If there is anything you take away from this letter, let it be this:
Doing anything on the phone just feels like hard work, it makes me not want to use the phone.
Your phones should be simple and easy to use, even without the mass of Help files that appear in a lot of the menus.
I know, some people may say that if I want a better experience, I should be willing to buy a more expensive phone. Well, I can say that if I do spend more money on a phone, the chance is very slim that it will be a Nokia.
Really, I am not being nasty, just trying to be honest. I know that Nokia is run by human beings like myself, so I tried to be polite, and I dont intend to hurt anyones feelings.
I am quite willing to answer any questions you may have. Its a bit of a pipe dream, but I would love to see Nokia release an entirely new version of the phone software, with everything re-organized and re-done. The sad truth is that will probably never happen, and I will end up swopping my E63 for something that is easy and pleasant to use.
So please, let me know if there is anything I can do to change the situation, or help you guys in making this better for everyone.

"If your not used to symbian you'll learn it quick enough, compared to android it's childsplay."
On the contrary, Ive been using Nokia phones for the last 8 years, and for the last 2 years Nokia exclusively, and the UI has just got worse.
The fact that "you'll learn it" is of no comfort. Why should I have to spend hours learning how to use a cellphone? Whenever I want to do something I havent done before, I have to spend time digging through obscure menu options. That is absurd.
"What phone do you have in mind to replace the E63,  that would help us users alot more then telling us what is wrong with your phone.  Although over all I like my e63."
I don't have any specific phone in mind, Im just going to ask and look around until I find something with an operating system that is organised in a logical manner, and that allows me to access and read my email quickly and easily.
I put this here hoping that other users would come forward with UI related things that they were unhappy about,  and then Nokia would take notice. I could easily have just gone out and changed phones, but I chose to do something different.

  • How to create Labview User Interface with buttons?

    Hello,
I try to create a user interface, where the TestStand sequencies can be selected one by one not only Test UUT, Single run and run Mainsequence (about 20 buttons needed).
I'm playing with the simple UI shipped with TS and can load the sequence file and run automatically a sequence (Main or another).
How can I create and assign buttons to all sequence files in my TS project?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks. (TS 4.0, LV 8.0)

I've modified my main VI with the below steps.
I still don't know how to create and assign front panel buttons to the user interface.
Anybody could explain to me how do I need to modify the attached part of my main vi and how to assign buttons.
    Thanks.

  • Disabling Controls in the Full Featured User Interface

    Hi Ppl,
I do not want few controls (variables view, stack view) to be displayed in my full featured User Interface. What is the best way to do this. Are there configuration parameters(UserInterface.xml) that could make these controls  in visible. Or Should these controls be make in visible only through the Visible Property.
    Thanks

    Hi Dennis,
Will Deleting the controls solve the purpose ? I tried moving the controls from the visible part of the front panel. but when the code was run the controls came back to their original position. Then I discovered that the full featured user interface has some code to set the position, size etc of the controls. This part of the code also checks the number of controls present. So I was wondering if just editing the configuration alone could disable the controls.
    Thanks

Since the possible methods would be 1.ActiveX 2.TCP/IP 3.DLL
Which is the best technique to implement this with out having to manipulate much of my code also do we have any documentation available ?

    Hi Mutha,
This functionality was a part of the orignal Internet Toolkit for CVI.  However, the web server part of this was removed and isn't included in the Enterprise Connectivity Toolkit.  You might consider using LabVIEW with the Remote Front Panel feature.

  • Pages User Interface

Does any one else find Pages (08) user interface a pain to use? I have used Word for a long time and am used to having most of the functions clearly displayed up front in the icon bar.
Pages hides functions under multiple menus in the Inspector menu. It took me hours to find the paragraph and line feed markings (the "invisibles"). Apple used the paragraph icon to represent two different things - the slide out styles drawer and the pull down menu - neither of which show the formatting marks. It took me another 1/2 hour to figure out how to "unindent" a paragraph (reset the style to free form).
It seems Apple tried to change the word processing language, icons, and placement of things just to be different from MS. Well, MS adopted them from WordPerfect and Apple should too, since they are standard.
I know Pages has a strong set of commands and is much more stable than Word, but I give them an F for the UI.

  • How can I improve the response time of the user interface?

I'm after some tips on how to improve the response time to mouse clicks on a VI front panel.
I have  data acquistion application which used to run fine, but after spending a couple of weeks making a whole bunch of changes to it I find that the user interface has become a bit sluggish.
My main GUI VI has a while loop running 16 times a second, updating some waveform charts and polling about a dozen buttons on the front panel.
There is sometimes a delay (variable, but up to 2 seconds sometimes) from when I click on a button to when it becomes depressed. I have wired the iteration terminal of the while loop to an indicator on the front panel and can see that the while loop is ticking over during the delayed response to the mouse click, so I know that the problem is not that the whole program is running slow, just the response to mouse clicks.
Also, just for debugging purposes, I have indicators of the iterations of all the main while loops in my program on the front panel, so I can see that there are no loops running abnormally fast either.
One thing I've tried is to turn off multi-threading, and this does seem to work - the response to mouse clicks is much faster. However, it has the side effect of making the main GUI while loop run less evenly. I was trying to get a fairly smooth waveform scrolling across the screen, and when multi-threading is off it gets a bit jerky.
    Any other suggestion welcome..
    (I am using LabVIEW 7.1, Windows 2000).
    Regards,
    Mark.

    Hi Altenbach,
Thanks for your reply. In answer to your questions:
I am doing both DAQ board and serial data acquisition. I am using NIDAQ traditional for the DAQ board, and VISA for the serial. I have other similar versions of this program that do only DAQ board, or only serial, and these work fine. It was only when I combined them both into the same program that I ran into problems.
The multiple while loops are actually in separate VIs. I have one VI that acquires data from the DAQ card, another VI that acquires data from the serial port, another VI that processes the data and saves to file, and another VI, the GUI VI, that displays the data in graphs and charts.  The data is transferred betwen the VIs via LV2 globals.
The GUI VI is a bit more complicated than I first mentioned. It has tab control, with 4 waveform charts on one page, 4 waveform graphs on another page, and 3 waveform graphs on another page. The charts have a history length of 2560, and 16 data points are added 16 times a second. The wavefom graphs are only updated once per minute.
I don't use the value property at all, but I do use lots of property nodes for changing the properties of the graphs and charts e.g. changing plot colours, Y scale range etc. There is only one local variable (for the Tab control). All the graphs and charts have data wired directly to their terminals.
I haven't done any profiling yet.
I am building arrays in uninitialised shift registers, but this is all well under control. As the experiement goes on, more data is collected and stored, and so the memory usage does gradually increase, but only to the extent that I would expect.
The CPU usage is 100%, but I thought this was always the case when using NIDAQ  with DAQ cards. Or am I wrong about this? (As a side note, I am using NIDAQ traditional, but would NIDAQmx be better?)
Execution priority of the GUI vi (and all the other VIs for that matter) is set to normal.
The program is a bit large to post here, and I'm not sure if my company would be happy for me to publicise it anyway, so I suspect that this is turning into one of those questions that are going to be impossible to answer.
Just as a more general question, why would turning off multi-threading improve the user interface response?
    Thanks,
    Mark.

  • User interface threads

Ok let's say you're writing a user interface and nothing involves
special-resources like a daqcard so there's no constraints on using things
at once. These are some kind of stupid questions and ideas but I'm really
not sure how to write a quality app with user interface at the moment.
My current design is bad, it is a mainVI which checks the menu and
frontpanel buttons, decides which operation or calculation (if any) is
selected, and sends that to a case structure to perform the operation.
This is sloooow but the most common way in examples that I've seen. The
major problem is that while processing the interface isn't checked and
therefore mouseclicks might be lost. Let's say the processing takes like
500ms on average, that is kind of slow between user-interface querys so it
would feel unresponsive in the mean time.
So here's my three ideas so far, I'd love some comments on what will be FAST
and what would be worthwhile to spend my time on:
    1. Leave the app as-is, latch the booleans. However you can't latch
mouse-clicks on a picture indicator that I knew of. I emailed NI before
about this and they just suggested adjusting execution priorities. Anybody
else messed around with this? Probably the worst option, but would take zero
    programming.
    2. Divorce the user interface and the processing. Create two parallel
while-loops in the same VI, one checks the buttons/menu on the front panel
the other processes the request or calculation. Let's say on average UI
checking takes 1.2ms and processing takes about 500ms. Also in this case is
the watch icon still really my best option (since checking buttons/menu only
takes like 1.5ms on average) for not wasting time repeatedly checking when
there's no input and dividing up cputime accordingly? Seems like there'd be
some overhead in switching back and forth repeatedly.
    3. Going all-out and changing to somewhat of an object structure. That way
the UI could create a new "execution" refnum, maintain some list of created
objects, process, return values, destroy any object, so everything could be
going on in parallel. That way one slow calculation won't bog down the rest
of the things the UI requests. The idea is far too abstract to me at this
point, but on a single CPU w98 system is it even worth my thinking about
such a structure? I get the feeling I'd see zero performance change between
the two, in fact maybe worse from any labview thread overhead!
Thanks for any comments. I have seen DAQ intensive apps discussed often, but
don't usually catch much on large user interface apps.
    -joey

    Hi Joey
First check are you are not recalculating the values on ever iteration of the user interface loop but are you only recalculating
on any change in the user interface values.
Otherwise I would use idea No. 2 but with these changes.
    1. Only check the whole user interface every 200-300ms, 1.5ms loop time will unnecessarily load the CPU.
    2. Each user interaction could be given a string representation and then placed in a queue to wait for the calculation loop to
have time to process it.(So the user instructions are not lost)
    3. Have separate loops for faster and slower calculations (or more) with each having their own queue.
    4. The extension to the idea's of having separate loops, is to have each loop in a separate independently running VI (see
VIserver). Still use the queue's to pass the data. This method would allow the calculations and the user interface to run on
separate threads and also lets you alter the execution priority for each VI to fine tune the execution times.
Following these instructions you would produce a basic client-server architecture for your user interface, as long as the UI
doesn't require too many slow calculation results before continuing then this should work well.
If this is still not fast enough then, if you have used suggestion No.4, the calculations can be moved off the users computer to a
faster server (using VIserver) also assuming they are networked.
Hope this gives you some ideas.

  • Using LabView to serial interface my microscope how I make a user interface to make the stage move by pressing buttons?

I have used LabView very little and am trying to write a program to control a microscope. I want to be able to give it commands such as to get the stage to move left, right, forward, back, and return to zero. I'm having trouble implementing the code into my block diagram. I've been reading LabView 8.6 tutorials for a couple of weeks and I'm still learning. What I know that  is that I need a event structure inside a while-loop for the user interface but I've been stuck.
Thanks for any help! If you need me to try and provide more information please say so.

    Button.vi ‏21 KB

Alright so my serial port code should be inside a while loop unfortunately it doesn't work whenever I enter a command to move the stage. It sits there maybe I'm missing something.
So let me give you an overview to what happens in my code, so the configure serial port is very crucial. The VISA Write writes the bytes to the port. The first VISA Write takes the string to write command. I connected the second VISA write to make it easier whenever I enter a command, the \r will iniate the command as a whole. Example L\r will move the stage to Left once, ending up at VISA Read then closing. All of this found in separate case structures.
Now the user interface to control the the movement of the microscope is one of my issues, making several attempts to make it work yielded no results. My best work not the best but a attempt is attached, also one of the things with this I'm having trouble with is getting the button to talk to the stage. On previous buttons I worked on I could press the button and light up an LED on the front panel, I thought the same principle would relate to the movement of the stage, no such luck.
I hope I cleared up some misconceptions on my part, I appreciate your patience.

  • When i add menu bar in my user interface gives me error that this handle is not a panel handle(return value -42)

i have 3 panels in my application and parent panel is displayed first then i display other two panels which come to the front then on entering correct password i discard the child panel and then you can see parent panel , but there is an issue when i add menu to my parent panel i dont know whats wrong when i add menu bar in my user interface (parent panel)  gives me error that this handle is not a panel handle(return value -42) for a child panel. when i dont open and display child panel then its fine , and even without menu added to my parent panel all my panels and my application works perfactly

    Hello smartprogrammer,
some more informations are needed in order to properlu help you in this situation:
    - Are you adding menus dynamically at runtime or in the UIR editor? If dynamically: how are you loading the menu bar?
    - Are you dynamically tailoring the menu bar at runtime (adding or deleting menu items, dimming / undimming some of them or checking / unchecking)?
    - Can you post the code where you are getting the error, documenting variables and scope (local to the function, global to the source file, global to the project)?
You can look at uirview.prj example that ships with CVI for an example of LoadMenuBar (the exampl eis in <CVI samples>\userint folder): in that project, the menu bar is shown as a context menu when you right-click on a tree element (see DeferredMenuCB callback).

  • Multiple monitors, duplicate user interfaces

    Hey everybody,
My application consists (as the title suggests) of a computer running 4 touchscreen monitors. Three of the monitors will be completely different, but the 4th will need to be a combination of the other 3. The 4th is bigger, so it will actually fit all of the front panel from monitor 1.
Here is a depiction of what the setup will be.
The hard part is that I need Monitor 4 to act exactly like the other monitors in its respective sections. It would be nice to be able to do this without duplicating code or having to send my data to multiple places every time. Do any of you have experience in UI duplication, or know of a clever way to do this?
What I'm thinking I'll have to do is create a new interface for the 4th monitor that triggers the other user interfaces and vice versa. The downside is that it takes extra development on top of the UIs I already have and if I change something with the first 3 UI, I have to go in and change the 4th manually. I would also have to do some fancy global event triggering LIKE THIS in order to communicate between two different VIs.
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Solved!

    GerdW,
My architecture follows a Queued Message Handler structure and allows communication between each module.
Can you elaborate on "duplicate FP"? Is there a way to duplicate just the FP for control purposes, but have the code only running once in the background.
    johnsold,
Each GUI is it's own top level Queued Message Handler that sends its information to seperate QMHs through shared API. Essentially this means that each module has its own Master portion that can send its data to another module's Slave and vice versa. This architecture would allow for near-simultaneous user inputs from different locations because the first one to be written to the queue would just get handled first, then overwritten by the other, which isn't a problem.
Can you link to an example of pulling a VI in to a subpanel while simultaneously running another instance of the VI? Every time I try this, I get an error.
    Edit: Thanks David
