And it stops at that screen and that is all that shows? Then you need to try and force the device into Recovery Mode and restore. See the instructions in this support document. If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

  • G4 won't start up after system update-what do I do now?

I just did a system update. Before I restarted (as required by the update), I used Disk Utility to repair disk permissions. When I restarted the computer, I only got a grey screen. I reset the PRAM, with no effect. I pulled the USB hub, so there is nothing connected to the computer, then tried restarting with DiskWarrior, again with no effect-just the grey screen. I then rebooted from the OS X system disk and was able to access Disk Utility there and redid the disk repair. I then restarted again, but am just getting a grey screen once again.
Any suggestions of what to do now would be appreciated.

The latest updates for Tiger often require a long time to restart (I have read reports of up to an hour), and often two restarts are required to get back to normal.
If you have used Disk Utility to repair your hard disk, and have repaired permissions, then that is about all that you can do.
The fact that the machine started indicates that the update has been applied, and you should be fine.
If you aren't backed up, take this opportunity to back up your files, then restart to confirm the machines health.

  • Win7 BootCamp won't start up after Windows Update

I been using Win7 with Bootcamp for over 8 months now and no problem but last night I shut down with a windows update and this morning it can not start up at all.  I just get a black screen.  I can select and enter my OSX drive no problem, even access the Boot Volume and copy files off it to my Mac partition also.  Holding option key on startup shows my two dirves also.  Is there anyway to revert back to old version of Win7 on startup or do I have to reinstall everything again?

Did you let the update complete? or shutdown while some of the update was still to be completed. A lot of it is done and completed after a restart.
Start getting into making sure you have free space, using restore points (you may need to boot from the DVD). You can also rollback an udpate to driver or uninstall.
There are always and will be 2nd Tues of the month critical security update in two days. The only Windows Update I've seen are to Microsoft Security Essentials. Maybe 3rd party issue?
I use CCleaner 3.0 on a daily basis to clean out temp files.
(you are running Windows, Boot Camp, no, that was/is drivers and partitioning tool, nothing else). Do you use a VM also? makes it sound like you might. Updates are best done running Windows natively, that is about as close as I can make it to what people keep referring to as "running Windows on Boot Camp" is just Windows running, not as a guest OS VM.

  • System won't start up after Software Update problem

I turned on the computer and ran Software Update. iTunes and others successfully updated, but there was a problem with the Quicktime update. The system required a restart to complete installations, so I did. The circle of lines was running around and around, but then blank screen and frozen cursor. I attempted to power down and restart, but to no avail. I restarted holding the Shift key and it loads up. I repaired priveledges and restarted. Still will not start up. Please, help me.

You say that "it loads up" when you start with the shift key down. I assume that you mean the system boots up okay. If so, you are successfully starting up with a Safe Boot.
According to Apple's KB article on What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?, the Safe Boot is doing the following:
    - It forces a directory check of the startup volume.
    - It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).
    - It runs only Apple-installed startup items (some of the items in /Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems).
The main goal of the Safe Boot is to repair the disk (filesystem) and to disable a variety of 3rd party extensions and startup items in the 3 folders listed here. Since you cannot startup normally after the Safe Boot, it seems that the disk repair did not fix the problem. So, most likely, you have some item in one of the 3 folders that is causing you trouble. Sometimes a 3rd party item is not compatible with an Apple upgrade and startup problems can occur after the upgrade.
So, a troubleshooting strategy would be to start back up in Safe Mode and then to inspect these folder for some item that looks suspicious to you. One approach is to look at 3rd party items that have been recently installed. If you find something that you suspect, drag it onto the desktop and then try to restart normally. If you are able to reboot normally, you have found the problem.
    I hope this helps.

  • ITunes won't start up after recent update.

I recently updated my iTunes software a few days ago, to the current 10.6v (64-bit for Windows), and ever since the update, I haven't been able to open up the program at all. I can double-click the icon numerous times and my cursor will show the timer as if it's about to open, but nothing happens.
I can still plug in my iPod Touch (4th Generation, I believe) and it'll charge just fine. However, sync-up is impossible since the program won't run in the first place.
I have already tried uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it, and so far, there are no results. Program still won't run.

I've done the first few steps successfully, but I run into a problem when I'm required to type in "C:\Program Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info" into the address bar. When typed in, I recieve an error message that says, "Windows can't find C:\Program Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info. Check the spelling and try again." I've directly copy and pasted the exact code in from the help page and it won't work.

  • Won't start up after software update

I have a PB G4 titanium 1ghz running 10.4.11. Just ran the latest software update which installed the latest security update, iTunes and QuickTime. At the end of the process the screen went black so I powered down by holding down the power button. Tried to restart and it just sticks on the grey apple screen.
Because of the common issues with the optical drive on these pb's I can't run anything off a disc to get it going. Don't have a bootable hard drive either. Feeling a bit stuck so wondered if anyone has any ideas for me.

Tough without the Tiger Disk problems, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
(SPACE between fsck AND -fy important)
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:

The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

  • Computer won't start up after mavericks update

My mb was due for an update, not sure if it did the update, but now when I try to start it up, it just goes to the gray screen with the apple and spinning wheel, then to a black screen with the mouse and nothing happens. Can't get it to start up and don't know why???? Just had a new HD put in two months ago. Any suggestions?

Startup your Mac while holding down the Option key.
That should launch the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk then click Restart.
If that doesn't work, try a Safe Mode boot.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
See if your Mac boots normally.

  • 2G  won't start up after ipod update

I've never had a problem with my 2nd gen ipod for 5 years until today!
Just connected to my Mac at work, ran an ipod update and now it won't boot.
Gets to the Apple logo, then a blip, then displays the connector icon, and then dies.
Have tried the reset combination for this model, but no joy.

  • Apple won't start up after security update

Last night, the installer program popped up and said the security update needed to be installed. So it downloaded and went to install, however the update was not successful and the computer wouldn't turn off. After holding the power button down, I was able to restart it, however, it comes to a gray screen with the apple logo and the spinning gear. It nevers brings up the window to login with the user profile. So how do I 'uninstall' the security update or fix the possibly corruption it caused by not completely installing.

Welcome to discussions, sorry for your current problem. Take a look at the following and try to begin with the Safe Boot section.

  • Tiger won't start up after massive update from Apple.

    Greetings Apple Discussions:
I have been using Tiger for a few months. I have my main start up on a 250 and back ups on other HDs. I updated some Apple apps from the Apple Software Update program: Apps like Quicktime, iPod, etc. The computer went into restart and never restarted—from the main start up HD. It just hangs on the Apple logo. I have to start up from other HDs. Is there something I can do to repair the main HD. I have most of the updates on it since cloning a copy of it a few months ago. I can access its contents.
    Thank you.
    Aubrey

    Hi, Aubrey.
    1. I suggest you begin troubleshooting using the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. An errant Startup or Login Item maybe the cause. In this case, it may be a Startup Item or perhaps a third-party kernel extension. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if an errant Startup Item is causing the problem.
    3. It may be that the update did not install correctly. For example, you may have had directory corruption present before you attempted to install the update. If that's the case, or if step 1 above finds issues, even if they are corrected, then an Archive and Install would be in order. See my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the specified order.
Before installing future software updates, you may wish to consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ. Taking the steps therein before installing an update often helps avert problems and gives you a fallback position in case trouble arises.
    Good luck!
