Nokia C7 - POWER saving SCHEDULE for night period

Hello NOKIA!
I have a suggestion  for  "the biggest (and most awaited!) update ".... PR  2.0  for  C7  &  N8.
We know that all phones with touch screen are big consumers of power and the battery life greatly decreases.
I do not use the phone at night.
It can be very useful to set Power Saving to start automatically at night, for example at 23.00 and was to expire at 7.00 (between 23.00 - 7.00).
Thanks!
PS: please Nokia, expected answers even if we do not receive major updates do not understand why we C7 clients, we have to wait nearly nine months for PR 2.0 which is already on  Astound  ... in nine months a child is born ....
... it would be nice to meet someone in this topic .... /t5/Cseries/How-can-I-manage-add-a-new-folder-in-my-email-client-Nokia-C7/m-p/941655#M14031

Thanks, but i dont need a big program... with gps suport and others... just a little/thiny program, very easy and helpfully.
I found solution here... http://store.ovi.com/content/128280?clickSource=search  with money... I spent a lot of money on programs that must hold manufacturers to provide ...
Lucky me with another developers... NOKIA SLEEP ON... SWEET DREAMS!
PS: more than a month the only update from Nokia with "software update" is for "Here and Now." What can I say, very useful ....!

  • Nokia 7370 Power Saving Problems

    Hi Everyone
I just got my nokia 7370 (the gold swivel one from the l'amour collection) and I'm having a minor problem.
When the phone is inactive it isn't displaying the date and time on a black screen as it should in power saving mode.
Power saving mode is switched on in settings but it isn't working.
Can anyone help me with this?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

well my operator (Videotron) here in Canada, i can only connect via 3G for calling therefore i sort of need 3G to make and receive calls, otherwise it's like being in Offline mode!
so i can understand this person's issue.
As i have the same problem.
Basicly whenever my phone activates Powersaving, it literally disconnects me from the network (no longer able to make and receive calls)

  • Power saving tipps for desktop PCs

Hi, lately I've been trying to make my boxes at home (router, desktop, fileserver) more power efficient. My energy bill was always kinda high and I think that I waste too much energy.
Most of my experience with computer related power saving comes from my laptop (maximize batterie time ). I've already taken some steps to minimize power consumption but I'm not sure what else could be done. If you have some ideas please let me know!
Some details about the steps I've taken so far:
    router (24/7)
Its an really old stripped down mashine (P2) that is underclocked (hard).
It's currently running pfsense (FreeBSD based) that is installed on an old hdd. I was thinking about getting a small usb-stick and running the system on that one... would that be a good idea? (lifetime etc)
    fileserver
Runs only when needed. In addition the cpu is undervolted (ondemand). Should be ok I guess.
    desktop (24/7)
This one is a bit more tricky. It has pretty much up to date (-> power hungry) hardware but needs to run 24/7 most of the time (ssh, ftp, p2p). Downgrading can only be temporary because sometimes I need the performance (casual gaming, video encoding, photoshop etc...).
So far I did only 3 things:
    1. hdds go to sleep when they are not used for 15 minutes --> hdparm -S 180
    2. cpu undervolting --> cpufreq-set -g powersave
    3. grafik card underclocking --> nvclock -n 250 -m 350 (nvidia only)
I'm a bit frightened to underclock the grafik card even lower... my screen got blocky and froze once while testing. ^^'
2 & 3 are done with a small script that I run when I leave the pc:
    #!/bin/bash
    if [ "$(cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor)" = "performance" ];
    then cpufreq-set -g powersave && nvclock -n 250 -m 350 && xset dpms force off
    else cpufreq-set -g performance && nvclock -r
    fi
I've a shortcut for the script on my keyboard but some automation would be better if I think about it... triggered by afk time or sth like this.
If you guys have ideas what else could be tweaked please let me know!

Raccoon1400 wrote:Using a flash drive instead of a HD may save a bit. It may be significant, it may not, but every little bit would help. Flash drive would take much less power. Maybe several times less.
You could also check out solid state drives for the desktop. I know very little about them, so it may be a good or bad idea.
Yeah flash drives uses less power but I wouldn't use them for a desktop pc. The price per GB is far worse compared to normal HDDs and the blocks can only be written around 100000 times... for a system disk this is not really acceptable (caching, temporary files etc). These SDDs are more designed for small (sub)notebooks imo because they have no mechanical parts what makes them more reliable.
For the router this would not a problem though.
omgwtfbyobbq wrote:A stick would definitely be cheaper! The HD power draw isn't as low as I thought it was but it's close. The power supply can be a huge draw like I mentioned before. There's a 20W and 40W difference at idle between a earthwatts 380 power supply and a couple generic power supplies I had lying around. I originally though my PIII used way more than my C7-D system, but after swapping power supplies I found out the PIII used less at idle than the C7-D even w/ two sound cards, a network card, and a video card.
Yeah a quality PSU will probably save allot. Currently the router uses an old generic power supply, so this is really sth i should look into. I have an enermax noisetaker that is not used atm so I'll see what difference it makes compared to the currently used PSU.
The power consumption of HDDs is really not that low (thx for the link). Around eight watts (Idle) for the tested HDDs. So putting the disks to sleep when they're not used is probably a good idea for the most people that leave the PC running for longer times. My desktop has 5 HDDs, so even when they are not really used they need around 40 watts for nothing. Old HDDs (like the one in my router) will probably need more power.
I've asked a friend of mine to lent me his digital wattage meter. With this I can make some detailed tests to see what tweaks are really useful to save power.
I'll post the results when I'm done (probably on the weekend). What I can say now is that the few tweaks I made on my desktop PC (first post) will probably save a bit. The temperature of the CPU and GPU drops around 10-15 °C, the ambient temperature drops allot as well. This pretty heavy considering that the case has a good airflow (2 80er fans in front of the hdds and one 120er fan at the back).

If you don't mind a very dim screen and the lights going out quickly then you can use it all the time.
It only really makes a difference whilst using your phone. It doesn't save any power if your phone is sat there unused on standby.
It doesn't reduce the performance of the phone or effect programs.

  • Power Saving & Scheduled Shutdown

I work in a computer lab at a grammar school... it's a small room but we have 15 eMacs squeezed in, and they generate a lot of heat. I've tried putting the machines on a schedule to start up at 9 am on weekdays, and shut down at 6:30 pm every day, but invariably, they're asleep at 6:30, and so the shutdown never happens. I set them to never go to sleep, too, but it doesn't seem to stick. We're running 10.3.9 on most of these. This sound familiar to anyone?

    Hi,
You can create a scheduled task using group policy preferences to initiate shutdown.
Checkout the below thread on similar discussion,

    FYI
The file path for the executable to initiate shutdown, restart, logoff, hibernate -
    c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe
    Command for,
    Shutdown - shutdown -f -s
    Restart     - shutdown -f -r

  • Power Saving is Fake

i just want to tell every1 here that the power saving mode doesnot saves your battery.
i have tested it for the last 4 days.
i put the my n8 on power saving mode for a period of 24 hours and during which i jst receive 2 calls and used wi-fi for 15 mins only. These are the most appopriate figures i'm telling here.
and my battery was showing last bar after exact 24hours.
then i put my cell phone on profile "Meeting" with i have disabled the ringing vibration only.
and i was expecting that i'll no longer last for 16 - 18 hours .. and i received and dialled 15 calls instead of that 2 calls on power saving mode and used the wifi for 30+ mins. But surprisingly after 24 hours i still had my battery showing 3 bars..
this really made me surprise that if the phone is showing me 3 bars of battery under normal conditions then what the heck is Power Saving Mode is doing ??
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

This is hardly a scientific analysis. Power saving mode doesn't switch off any particular features, it simply puts various functionalities on a mode that consumes less power when not being used during normal operation. Only if the phone is in offline mode with all types of radio signal disabled is it truly doing "nothing".
Switching to a profile with no audible ringtones will only make a significant difference to overall consumption if your power unless you receive literally hundreds of calls, the maximum any incoming call will ring is 30 seconds which even at highest volume is not going to make a dent.
Your WLAN usage is not just down to surfing, certain home screen widgets or other apps may be making connections at other times. Personally, I only use widgets to give me quick accss to phone features such as my contact, calendar, music player etc. - I never have any of the downloadable widgets or widgets for TV/Radio services etc. active.
By far the biggest impact on your consumption is likely to be your network connection, firstly you need to be aware that power consumption is different if the phone is on GSM or 3G, talk time is significantly lower on 3G than GSM, though standby (ie: completely idle) time is marginally higher on 3G. If you are in an area where your network operator has a lower quality 3G service, it is possible that your phone is having to hunt more often for signals (if 3G drops out, the phone aurtomatically picks up GSM until it can find again a good enough 3G signal). If this is the case, you might benefit from switching to GSM-only mode (Menu>Settings>Connectivity>Network>Network mode>GSM) to see if this makes any difference. I live in an area where my operator only offers GSM services, so with no network switching the battery life is fantastic. I work in an area where I can usually get 3G and sometimes 3.5G, and I do notice a difference in battery life due to network switching.
I recently travelled by Eurostar from Brussels to London, during which I watched a film of almost two hours on the N8, then spent the afternoon in the city with friends during which time the phone was frequently roaming between different networks, and by the time I got to the friend's house where I stayed the night (around 8 o'clock), I stlll had three bars. Power consumption is a minefield because there are a myriad of different factors, many of which are external to the phone, which affect performance.

  • Using both power saving mode and offline mode caus...

So I am having a very strange problem. I have been using the Situations App (formerly Nokia Situations) to automatically put my phone into offline mode, and power saving mode over night. 9pm to 6:30am.
Recently the phone as started refusing to leave the offline mode in the morning. Even if I try to change the profile manually it says "Unable to change profile". The only way I can get out of offline mode is to reboot.
I uninstalled Situations, and manually put the phone into offline mode and power saving mode. By the morning I had the same issue, stuck in offline mode until reboot. So it's not the App causing the problem. I've tried a soft reset, same problem still.
I also noticed that over-night (from fully charged before 9pm) to 6:30am I used about 70% of my charge. (A combination of power saving mode and offline mode is killing my battery!)
I would have to go to work and immediately put my phone on charge! I.e.. 12 hours of offline + power save has drained my battery almost completely.
Last night I decided to use the Situations App to put the phone into offline mode, BUT NOT activate power save mode.
This morning the phone had virtually full charge and it had no problem returning to online mode. So it's ONLY if I use BOTH power-save and offline. (Tonight I will try using power-saving mode and NOT offline mode to see if it's only the power-saving mode causing the issue!)
If I manually enter offline+power-save mode, and then try to return to on-line/non-power-save mode, relatively quickly, i.e.. Not over-night, everything is fine. It's only over night the problems start!
    Any help?
    Rob
PS. I also have the problem where using HSPA+ causes my phone to drop from the network and stop being able to receive/make phone calls. But disabling HSPA+ works around this for now, I think this problem is unrelated however.

I have a similar problem. My 808 PureView loses 70% of its charge overnight if I leave it in normal profile without power-saving. To deal with this issue, I started using the situations app to put the phone in power saving mode overnight. That solved the problem (although I never put my phone to offline mode). This is a weird problem because throughout the day my phone doesn't use 70% of charge, but it does overnight while doing nothing!
I have also experienced the second problem, losing cellular and internet connection, on my 808. I have started a thread to deal with this issue.

I believe it is a firmware bug that causes this problem.

  • Nokia N8: Possible Power Saving Mode Bug

    Dear All,
For the past week, I've change the way I use my Nokia N8. I decided to set it up in power saving mode during the evening. There is no point for it to be on 3.5G if nobody is using it. Unfortunately, I seem to have hit a problem. At the moment, my N8 is using a pay as you go sim card from O2 and this card is in the phone 24/7.
When I activate power saving mode, the phone re-registers with the network and the maximum speed it will have will be EDGE. In the morning, when I take my phone I disable power saving mode and the phone re-registers again with the network.
Having said that, on multiple ocassions, my phone showed some worrying symptoms. For example, a few das ago, when I disabled power saving mode, the phone did not show the 3.5G icon and I could not make any phone calls. The coverage was up and down. You might say that, it did not show 3.5G because you had no 3.5G you idiot. That is not true, where I live, there is 3.5G everywhere.
I was shocked that I could not make any phone calls. After a few reboots and taking SIM card out, I managed to get the phone in working order.
Today, the same thing happened. I managed to fix it just a few moments ago. It seems that the power saving mode option has an implementation problem or O2 does not like the way the N8 registers to the network when you enable and disable the said feature.  Has anyone encountered this???

@m80116, this may well be a solution, but could be problematic if in a weak reception area where only Edge is available ? You could lose data connection completely ! I tend to use Dual mode, and generally don't have an issue, but certainly for anyone living and working in a very strong 3 or 3.5G area it may work very well, wish I had the luxury of being able to use 3G Only

  • Nokia N8 Screen Saver & Power-Saving Mode

Few issues after 24hrs of N8 usage...
    1) My Screen Saver stopped working... screen stays lit indefinitely, even when locked... after multiple restarts and lots of frustration it came back, but this issue has already happened twice - surely a bug
    2) Power-Saving mode doesn't really make sense unless it is customisable... I am on a 3G only network, power-saving enables GSM-only... see the flaw?
    Appreciate your feedback,
    Mike

Regarding ISSUE #1 (the screensaver failure), I have a PERFECT solution!!!
However, I am not sure if this will work for you, because I have SPB Mobile Shell, but it is worth a try!
    1) Make sure you have the widget for the MUSIC PLAYER on one of your main operating page.
    2) Turn OFF your phone regularly. (NO NEED to hard rest by hold over 8 secs)
    3) Turn ON your phone.
    4) Once the phone loaded up, immediate play any song through your music player. (Need to be done before your phone auto-locks)
    5) Lock your phone with your side-lock button; your screensaver should come back.
Both my g/f & I owns a Nokia N8, and we both experienced the screensaver failure problem. My N8 was easy to fix by many people's solution of just simply reset, and it automatically fixed the problem. But My g/f's N8 was stubborn, and wouldn't turn the screensaver back on by this simple reset method. Later I discovered the above method, and it worked every time! I think somehow the music player is triggering the screensaver and forces it to stay on.
Well, although we somehow surpass this  issue, but Nokia still need to fix this problem. Nokia N8 is a great phone, it shouldn't have such a simple mistake in it. This makes the perfect phone imperfect!!! Anyway, please let me know if this method works for you guys, thanks.

It's an idea, Scott, but I haven't heard that anyone has implemented it.
There are a number of other options that various people have noted would be handy to have "on" when running on AC and "off" when running on battery, or vice versa. We can all think of some of them. Send feedback to Apple:
