Nokia E52 choppy VoIP due to WLAN interruptions an...

I love my Nokia E52, but one of the main reasons I bought it (the combination of WiFi Wireless Lan support and fully integrated Voice over IP client) is not usable due to very laggy, unsteady WLAN connection (while having perfect signal strength - E52 shows 100% (same room)).
Because of this I get choppy VoIP (cracks and interruptions up to several words in my VoIP conversations).
My E52:
Software version: 031.012
Modell: E52-1
Type: RM-469
This is not a problem of the VoIP Client, audio-codec, or SIP provider/internet connection.
It is the Wireless Lan connection between my E52 and my Router. I tried 3 different access points, with and without wireless encryption, 802.11b (1M...11M data-rate) and 802.11g - problem always the same.
I can track it down by pinging my E52 (idle without any programs running) from my Linux box:
192.168.0.100 is the IP of my E52 assigned by DHCP.
1.) 64byte pings, once per second:
PING 192.168.0.100 (192.168.0.100) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=1 ttl=69 time=6.36 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=2 ttl=69 time=57.9 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=3 ttl=69 time=80.9 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=4 ttl=69 time=203 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=5 ttl=69 time=128 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=6 ttl=69 time=50.0 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=8 ttl=69 time=324 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=9 ttl=69 time=79.7 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=10 ttl=69 time=37.5 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=11 ttl=69 time=60.0 ms
64byte pings using a good wireless 802.11g connection should be around 1ms and constant!!
It's not because of bandwith limit of E52 wlan/cpu, because the higher ping times stay the same, even if I increase ping-packet-size 150x:
2.)10000byte pings (150x times bigger packages!), once per second [still ping times look quite similar]:
PING 192.168.0.100 (192.168.0.100) 10000(10028) bytes of data.
10008 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=1 ttl=69 time=175 ms
10008 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=2 ttl=69 time=89.8 ms
10008 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=3 ttl=69 time=115 ms
10008 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=4 ttl=69 time=234 ms
10008 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=5 ttl=69 time=153 ms
10008 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=6 ttl=69 time=83.7 ms
3.) Small 64byte pings, but now ten pings per second:
Now it gets even more strange:
# ping 192.168.0.100 -i 0.1
PING 192.168.0.100 (192.168.0.100) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=1 ttl=69 time=200 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=2 ttl=69 time=95.0 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=3 ttl=69 time=2.25 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.100: icmp_seq=4 ttl=69 time=5.93 ms

Note: My Linux Ping Command doesn't say something like "Request timed out." for lost packets (like Windows Ping does). So if there is a jump from icmp_seq=81 to icmp_seq=150 it is because everything in between got lost.
You see, in 3.) it has the slow pings once in a while and in between almost normally fast pings, but suddenly a long lag of 6-7sec (this is deadly for voip) and then the circle repeats.
Is my E52 wlan chip defect, or is this some kind of Power-Management system? How can I turn it off?
I don't need a fast wlan connection on my E52. 1MBit/s is more than enough. But it has to be steady, without lags.
Ideas, anybody? Please!

Well, it has nothing to do with the VoIP service itself for sure. As razvan_t has already noted earlier this problem affect all network services like internet radio.
It behaves exactly as E52affair described in the very first post. If I ping the phone through my home LAN using ping with normal settings, i.e. 1 packet per second nothing much wrong happens. It finishes with some 1% packet loss. But when I increase the ping frequency up to 10 packets/s the same test ends with terrible >80% packet loss as you can see below. And the following pattern can be observed during this test: 10 packets goes through well then some 60-70 packets is lost and it repeats again and again. Lags in VoIP audio stream correspond to the lags in ping. The wifi conditions are excellent, phone is located some 2 meters far from the router´s wifi antenna.
I tried watch some video on Youtube. The video stream was prefetched in jumps appearing with the same frequency as lags in fast ping were observed during the test.
Before I found this thread I obviously thought it was a VoIP problem. Therefore I tried various VoIP settings, different codecs, nothing has helped. Now it is clear why.
I even did a phone hard reset. It did not help neither.
Because I observe almost the same lags in VoIP even when the phone is connected using the packet data through the GSM network, I suppose the problem is not limited to wifi connection only. But I cannot confirm this theory because I´m not able to ping the phone throughout the GSM data network.

  • VoIP problem Nokia E52

    Hi!
I have a problem trying to setup JustVoIP service on my Nokia E52. I installed the VoIP Settings Manager and set up everything as below:
    Profile Name: justvoip
    Service Profile: IETF
Default Destination: Internet (I am using VoIP via my Home-WLAN)
    Default Access Point:  none
Public Username: sip:[email protected] (Note: “sip:” will always be added automatically)
    Use compression: No
Registration: When needed or always on (choose your preference)
    Use Security: No
Proxy & Registration Server have identical(!) values:
    Server Address: sip:sip.justvoip.com
    Realm: justvoip.com
    User name: YOURJUSTVOIPUSERNAME
    Password: YOURJUSTVOIPPASSWORD
    Allow loose routing: Yes
    Transport type: UDP
    Port: 5060
I see the service but I cannot enable it. Whan I try to activate, the message "Invalid settings" appeares. The most funny thing is, that at the beginnig it worked fine! With the same settings! Anybody know, what is going on here?
    Thank you for your help!

Same issue on E72 and XM 5630 here. Other people experienced it also with N97.
you can read this info in http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=192607
VoIP3.x registers a user, it writes a randomly translated username in the contact URI, i.e. aweofj293j2c0239jdwiofje0@nataddress instead of username@nataddress
Ougoing calls are not an issue (when the client succeeds to register) howevver for incoming calls the server has to put this translatedusername in the request-URI of his INVITE. Some Registars do that, but yours and mine don't.
This interpretation of how SIP should work by Nokia was not implemented in prior versions of Nokia VoIP settings (v 2. and v 1 used on FP1 models such as E61, N95, etc) thus enabling incoming calls to work for all.
Now however it seems this is the new standard Nokia has chosen to go for with all new models thus leaving us with a choice to either :
1- have our service providers patch their registrars to make them work with this new Nokia implementation or
2- use alternative third party VoIP apps for our devices instead of the native/integrated Nokia SIP client. or
3- change SIP service provider to use ones that run Registrars compatible with this new implementation...

  • Losing internet connection on Wi-Fi (Nokia E52)

    Hi Everyone!
    I have:
    1) PC (Windows 7) with ASDL internet (D-Link DSL-200) and USB Wi-Fi Adapter (TP-Link TL-WN821N)
    2) Two netbooks (Windows XP)
    3) Smartphone Nokia E52
I want to: share the Internet from PC to other devices via Wi-Fi adapter.
The problem: on PC Wi-Fi connection disconnects with smartphone. But on smartphone, connection is active, the smartphone sends the packets, but the PC is not responding
    Updates, drivers, firmware:
Windows 7 - all the latest updates.
Windows XP - all the latest updates.
    D-Link DSL-200 - installed the latest driver.
    TP-Link TL-WN821N - installed the latest driver.
    Nokia E52 - installed the latest firmware (091.003 \ 03-Apr-2012)
I was standing on a PC Windows XP. First I tried the program Connectify Pro. Speed is low, not always connected. I created connection manually by Ad-Hoc mode (I manually prescribed IP and DNS addresses). On netbooks, connection is good! But the problem is with the smartphone. Sometimes the connection is lost, on PC Wi-Fi connection disconnects with smartphone. But on smartphone, connection is active, the smartphone sends the packets, but the PC is not responding. I thought, that USB Wi-Fi adapter's power saving is active, but it was disabled. My friend recommended installing Windows 7. I’ve install it. The same thing ... (on PC Wi-Fi connection disconnects with smartphone. But on smartphone, connection is active, the smartphone sends the packets, but the PC is not responding). Situation is the same in Ad Hoc mode and in SoftAP using MS Virtual Wi-Fi or Connectify Pro.
    Is there any solution?
By the way! I forgot to say, if any of netbook will be connected to the PC via Wi-Fi, the smartphone does not lose internet connection, but turning off the netbook creates the same problem after minutes (on PC Wi-Fi connection disconnects with smartphone. But on smartphone, connection is active, the smartphone sends the packets, but the PC is not responding).
Wi-Fi connection on netbooks is good, internet works, no disconnects.
I read on the Russian forums, that such a disease is on all Nokia S60 smartphones.
P.S. Sorry for my bad English.

    Hi AssIsBack,
Thanks for your feedback and welcome to the forum.
From your description I make it you are creating the ad-hoc connection using the TP-Link TL-WN821N? As a general rule it is not advisable to use ad-hoc for 'permanent' WLAN connections. This is more intended for quick 'point to point' connections and is generally considered to be both unstable and insecure. Also it could be you are using the same USB hub on your PC to connect both the modem and the WLAN interface which may cause these two devices to interfere with each other.
I would strongly suggest you replace the D-Link DSL-200 with a modem which has a WLAN accesspoint built in. You will find this will increase your networks dependability and speed. It will also allow you to have your PC turned off and still be able to use WLAN with your phone.

  • E52 - Advanced VoIP settings 3.x v2 - VoIP service...

E52 - Advanced VoIP settings 3.x v2 - VoIP service profile settinsg unavailable
    Hello,
I have Nokia E52 with firmware 091.003, with installed VoIP advanced settings 3.x version  2.0.
My problem is that I have unavailable Profile settings in VoIP services menu ( with SIP profile defined)
to set WMCMDA(?)  ON to use 3G.
Factory reset of settings neither reflashing of FW by Nokia OVI suite did not help.
My previous E52 ( stolen from me ) with FW 07x.nnn or older had  it available......
Do anybody know, or has clue, about the reason and solution ?
I use Nimbuzz 3rd party VoIP, that works great on wifi/ 3g and even Edge,
but for some reasons is cancelling voice after 65 s of the call....
    Poutnik

BTW, I would not believe how deletion of extra VoIP service can ruin Nokia Connection destination/target (?) groups, so Nokia is not easily able to access internet.
E.g. Opera mini, instead of list of variable APs starts t offer just
    System Default and
    Always ask,
but none of them is usafull, because even Always ask fails, never asking me....

  • Nokia E52 restarts everytime using WIFI to access...

Everytime when i try to use WIFI to access Internet either using browser to surf,  accessing  the facebook or youtube applications using WIFI, the phone screen goes dim,  and goes back to the main screen (the WLAN is automatically off when the phone restarts).
I have tried upgrading the firmware, but the problem still persist. The storekeeper says this is a phone bug, and there is nothing NOKIA can do.

Today i went to the company which sold me my Nokia E52 for my WiFi problem, i mentioned above.
As they saw i have updated my software version to 34.001 /the latest/ the told me that the warranty is void. Is this correct?
Everywhere it is mentioned that it is recommended to use the latest versions of the software, because some bugs are fixed, some additional functions are available, some problems are solved ...
I tried to explain to this companys personel, that i have never used my WiFi, because in the beginning when i bought my E52 phone, my first attempts were unsuccessfull because the phone was restarting when trying to use WiFi; but the use of WiFi then, at that moment was not so necessary. Now when i need this WiFi function, i tried the sofware update, and now my phone gives "System error" when trying to access WiFi.
    Please advice?
Also i tried to look for the Nokia representative in Bulgaria - no success - on the Nokia official site it is mentioned only to ask for service where i have bought my phone from... No official authorised service?
As i read over the net the WiFi problem of E52 is a very common problem. Please advice what to do?

  • No email body in mail for exchange? Nokia E52

On my Nokia E52 i have setup mail for exchange access to gmail, but all it seems to download is the header with who its from and the subject? There isnt any mention of the email body/message at all?
My contacts and calendar all sync properly.
Am i missing something?  On my ipod touch it downloads the messages using the exact same account

Curious issue, on the 22nd January 2010, I also got a system message stating ‘Mail for Exchange – Your account does not have permission to synchronise with your current settings.'  then a further message saying that the phone required a locking password etc.  This resulted in the phone being locked before it could be opened.
I'm sure nothing changed on the local mail servers, so I wonder what has changed on the Mail For Excange settings?

Nokia E52 Message Sender Name/Field is not updated automatically on Firmware 054.003!
Issue 1: Message Sender Name/Field is not updated automatically after changes made in contacts.
e.g. Message send by Mr. A is displayed in inbox, however when same contact changed to Mrs. AB in contacts does not update sender name/field inside inbox. Sender name remains Mr. A physically on handset. However the changes made to contacts and Message Sender Name/Field is updated automatically on use of Nokia PC Suite 7.1.60.0 and Nokia Ovi Suite 3.0.0.290 but not on phone.

This is a classic problem on these new FP2 phones. I had the same problem with my N96.
You'll need to have a memory card inserted for this and you'll have to re-populate your contact groups afterwards, but the solution is to go into your contacts and then:
    Options > Mark/Unmark > Mark all
Options > Copy business card > To other memory > memory card
This exports a bunch of VCF files to the memory card.
Next, delete all the contacts from your address book
    Options > Mark/Unmark > Mark all
    Press 'C' and confirm.
Now re-import the contacts from the memory card:
Options > Copy business card > From other memory > memory card
This will re-import all your contacts and it will now be possible to assign defaults.

  • Nokia E52 - downloading maps direct to the phone

Hello, i would ask if here is chance to download maps directly to the phone without using a PC. (through WiFi).
    I have Ovi Maps appliaction v 3.04 , phone Nokia E52.
    Thanks for answers.

    @sladdy
    Welcome to the forum!
There is nothing to stop you downloading directly the compressed .zip file for smaller region(s) from map servers directly upon your E52, decompressing it and moving the (16) folders 0 - 9 and a - f to their respective positions in E:\Cities\diskcache following the methods outlined by ovikovi here on the forum!
There is unfortunately no "Update" feature within Ovi Maps v3.04 as opposed to v3.06 for this purpose!

  • Nokia E52 - where is my contacts?

Hi guys.  I have my Nokia E52 for well over a year now and can't say it has given me any problems of note.  However, recently, I started using an instant  messaging service named WhatsApp.  It was working fine in the begininng, but one day while using it, it made the phone switch off, and would never swich back on.  I sent it in for repairs and it came back working fully functional.
That lasted all but 1 week, before I noticed that suddenly, all my contacts have disappeared from my phone memory.  I can not find a single one.  The weird thing is, if somebody calls me who was previously in the contact list from the phone memory, their name appears.  So, somehow, it seems to me that the contacts are there, but I just can't access it.  I phoned nokia helpdesk, and they asked me to backup --->format--->restore, and that didnt help my cause either.  Even if I try to store new contacts to the phone memory.... it foes it successfully, but I just cant pick them up. Can somebldy please advise me on this matter?
    Thank you

    I did the following...
a)Made a backup to my pc using Nokia PC Suite
    b)formatted the phone(dialed *#7370#)
c)tried to restore the file, but couldnt, because the phone was probably in a "lost" state and nokia pc suite could not pick the phone up.
    d) Did a hard reset.
    e) phone was visible again
    f) restored the file, but was back at square 1.
I am not sure if what you suggesting is the same as what I did above and if ovi suite is anything different from nokia pc suite or if it is the same thing. .  Needless to say though, thanks a million for your input thus far.  Really appreciate it.

  • Firmware update on my Nokia E52 only run java game...

Hi, I made that day Firmware update on my Nokia E52 and then update-s all right, only run java games and their sound is gone whether he shall be ON. Anybody have a similar problem and a solution for it?? Firmware-v 052.003 but the date is Cot. 29, 2010) will be happy if you give me an idea how to fix it! I tried quite moratoria preinstall, reset backup I have not done, unfortunately the old Firmware.

Okay, you are using a MacBook so I am not sure how much help I can give since I use a PC with Vista. In the latest version of Ovi Suite, once the update file has been downloaded and the installation starts, the computer will give your prompts that the phone is disconnected via USB, the phone restarts, the screen flashes, etc. I just leave it alone and after the progress bar on the Ovi Suite ends my phone is updated. I currently have v40. The free maps is available only to v31 and above for 5800 if I remember correctly.
If possible please use the Ovi Suite instead of PC suite (at least in my experience it works better), and do not in any way touch your phone during updates, even if it "disconnects" from the computer.
However regarding to your query as to why it is not available via the *#0000# method (or FOTA), updates are generally released through NSU before FOTA, sometimes with as much as a month in difference because the files in FOTA are not the entire update file but rather extractions from it. For example, the v40 FOTA is 17mb (according to someone who said he had it already), while the v40 I downloaded through Ovi Suite was 128mb.

You can do a hard reset of the device, but note that *ALL DATA* on the device will be ERASED. To do a hard reset ( where the phone is almost rewritten ), press *#7370#. If it still doesn't seem to solve, turn off the phone and press *, 3, dial ( green ) and power key altogether till the phone turns on. Always backup before you perform these functions.
