  • Screen capture function (Shift-Command-3 or 4) doesn't work

When I try to do a screen capture using the built-in utility, I hear the camera-click, but then get an error message saying the capture couldn't be completed because of this error: "unable to create type string". How do I fix this?
Note: I normally use Grab, but find having to convert tiffs to jpg/png annoying; I was hoping to use the built-in screen grab instead.
This problem has been happening for months, through many boots/reboots. I've repaired permissions to no avail. Any ideas?
    Thx!

Lyssa is correct try restarting the Mac first, I always assume that users do this to try to fix anomalies.
Creating a new user is fairly easy and non disruptive to the Mac or the way you log in. You can simply delete the user when finished troubleshooting or keep it for later troubleshooting.
To create a new account (just to let you know how to do it).
    1. Open Sys/Prefs/Account (yes accounts sorry I was thinking Tiger OS).
    2. Click on the Lock at the bottom left of the window.
    3. Put in your password (which should be the admin account).
    4. Now the + add user button should no longer be greyed out, select the + button.
    5. Give the user a name, shortname, and password. Then press Create Account.
    6. Select the Keep Automatic Login when prompted.
    7. Exit out of Sys/Prefs
Now to log in to the user, go to the blue Apple menu at top left corner of Desktop, Select Log off "User". You'll be prompted with a log in selection screen. Select the newly created user, enter the password then test the Screen shots.
    To delete the user.
    1. Open Sys/Prefs/Accounts
    2. Unlock as you did previously.
    3. Select the newly created user then press the - Delete User button.
    4. When prompted, select the "Delete the home folder" option then press OK. And your done.

  • Screen capture functions don't work with 10.4.6

After update to 10.4.6, Cmd-Shft-4 and Cmd-Shft-3 are idnored. are they supposed to work?
    John

Try removing this file if you have it:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screencapture.plist"
I have one because I changed the location of the screenshots from the Desktop to a folder. The other place the location is saved is in Grab's plist file:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Grab.plist"
It could be that the shots are being taken, but put in the wrong place.
    Francine
PS--I just put up an interactive AppleScript that Mark Douma wrote some time back that uses the system level function that the keyboard shortcuts are supposed to call. It is here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/francines/.Public/InteractScreenCapture.zip
Unzip, double click the script icon, then choose what format you want, click and drag the crosshairs and see if a capture appears on your Desktop.

(As in capture the dae model shown in the comp not from webcam.)
& also i just want to capture the swf window not the whole desktop.
I read online, they say its impossible?
Or is it possible to call screen capture function in javascript to flash CS4? (LIke external data)
(Moreover, does anyone know how to detect multiple dae models with different markers?)
Anyone can help??? Thanks in adv!!

My current program (Flash CS4, AS3) only can capture what the webcam sees.
How do i change it to screen capture (something like print screen) with my .DAE models?

  • Screen capture output is cropped incorrectly

I'm using the built-in screen capture functionality on OS X to grab screenshots, using Command-Shift-4 followed by space, then clicking on the window to be captured.  The problem is that if the window fills the full screen area, it is partially cropped at the right side and bottom (see example image).
This problem appears to relate to the screen capture grabbing the drop shadow in addition to the window itself.  If I reduce the window size to allow a decent margin around it, I can capture an uncropped image – but then the window size is smaller than I need it to be for the image I want.  Also, I would like to capture the window ONLY, without the drop shadow.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?  And for bonus points...is there an option to capture a window WITHOUT the drop shadow?  I know I can used the Command-Shift-4 and drag out a capture area, but this almost always results getting unwanted borders somewhere (since I can't accurately spot and click on the exact edges).

See https://discussions.apple.com/message/8007049#8007049 for a way to turn off the drop shadow in captures.

  • Changing file type in screen capture to .jpg using Terminal

I am having trouble changing my screen capture function to .jpg. For some reason it is set to .tiff and
despite opening Terminal and typing in "defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg"
(no quotes) hitting return and restarting, it remains a .tiff
I have also tried: "defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg" (return)
"killall SystemUIServer" (return) and restarting.(No quotes)
Can someone tell me how to accomplish this? I use keyboard shortcut control/command/shift/4 and I'm running 10.6.4
    Thanks

The OP here was using a keyboard shortcut, not Grabber.
I did some further exploring. I just tried TinkerTool again, and again was able to change the file format of saved screencapture files to jpeg. TinkerTool modifies the com.apple.screencapture.plist file the same way that the Terminal command does.
This clearly works for command-shift-3 and command-shift-4, which save the screencapture image as a file. However, on looking more closely at the O.P.s initial post in this thread, he/she actually said
    I use keyboard shortcut control/command/shift/4
When you include the control key in the command, the screencapture image gets saved to the clipboard instead of to a file, and you wouldn't normally be aware of its format until you pasted the clipboard contents somewhere else. I don't know where the OP was pasting it, but as was noted in the thread cited above by Baltwo, pasting a sceencapture image from the clipboard into a mail.app message results in a .tiff file being pasted. I also find this to be true in my system - perhaps this is what the OP was doing all along.
However this is an issue caused by the receiving app, not by the screencapture function. It's possible to look directly at the contents of the clipboard via:
    Finder>Edit Menu>Show Clipboard
With my screenshot format set to jpeg by TinkerTool, I used control-command-shift-4 to save a screenshot to the clipboard. Looking directly at the clipboard in Finder as above, the clipboard image was a jpeg. When I then pasted the clipboard contents into a mail message and used Mail>File Menu>QuickLook Attachments, the pasted graphic in the mail message was a .tiff.

  • Screen capture sees only Finder

My screen capture function does seem to work, but the only thing it sees is the Finder. When I press command-shift-4, it works just like in Tiger (plus the little coordinate numbers), and after a second or two a picture file appears on the desktop. But no matter what I was looking at when I captured, the picture shows only what was in Finder underneath the top application.

Update: An erase-and-install reinstallation fixed it.

  • Screen capture not working.

For well over two years now by screen capture function does not work, the screen cross hair or full screen capture icons appear but after selection nothing shows on the desktop... Can someone help? I have upgraded several OS versions in this time. I've had a look through some forum answers but can't find a fix so opening this as a new discussion.

Hey... I was plugged into my 24" monitor and after unplugging it... everything works as normal... kinda weird... any other thoughts?

  • Screen capture in J2ME

    Hello,
Is there a way to get a screen capture on a mobile device of the current display in J2ME?
Does anyone know how to do this (even if it is another way)?
    Thanks in advance.

'spyware' woah, dude, you got it wrong. Sorry, I should have explained what I was trying to do. I would appreciate it if you would remove your remark so that people won't ignore my post.
Actually (before you jump to conclusions about my motives) all I want to do is to take screenshots of the games/tech demos I've worked on and save them to my PC.
I saw a program that does it for $50 a while back, might cut my losses and buy it, you (burke) seem rather rigid in your thinking (I'm not a noob to programming, check my website on my profile).
I've searched for a while trying to find any leads on how I could do this in C# and I thought maybe I could put a J2ME app on my phone then send commands to it from a C# interface to then have the J2ME app feed the image back to the PC (all this through bluetooth). I've heard the Symbian SDK has some screen capture functionality built in, but need it on a non Symbian device.
Now that I think about it, apalsson your idea sounds like it might be the solution to my needs. I could work this into my own apps and save myself a lot of trouble (and people thinking the wrong thing).
Could someone point me to some documentation on writing out JPEG files on a mobile device (using J2ME)?
EDIT: btw, I awarded a Duke star to apalsson because he at least offered some useful advice.

  • IPhone can no longer screen capture

I used to be able to perform a screen capture by pressing the home button at the same time as the power button. I don't know why, but that no longer works. Can anyone tell me what to look for or do to restore this useful feature?

I found that the screen capture function works again after I restart the iPhone. Same thing if I reboot the iPhone as you described. Thank you.
The problem comes back however after a few tries. Here is what I'm doing to recreate the problem:
I have an app called PhotoTropedelic. It posterizes an image in bright and contrasty colors. I like playing with some of my photos in this way. The app does this by stages so you can see the first several layers of color being applied and then successive layers are added on until the image is complete. Sometimes the image looks interesting in the early stages of development in this process so I make a screen capture at any point along the way.
That works for two or three times and then the screen capture function ceases to work.
    Thanks for your suggestion

I read this was a promised function by MSI to a reviewer at [H] during a P67 review but that was back in March or April I forget which.
    Any insight appreciated?

  • New "Save image" function (not the 2-button screen capture, different)

I found this while playing w/ Safari on my iPhone. I went to Flickr, saw a picture that a friend uploaded, and had my finger on it a bit too long- a dialog popped up that said "Save image" or "Cancel"- so, I hit save image, and the big (1024 x 685, 197 KB) was placed into my Camera Roll file.
Does the same thing on any website- you can open a large image, and download it, not just a small screen capture.
Makes really nice wallpaper. Sorry if this has been around awhile, I just happened to find it

This was added with 2.0 software

  • Changing file type format in Screen Capture (shift command 4)

You'd think this would be in a preference menu! But it's nowhere to be found in any apps preference or system preferences.... I've seen posts how to do it in Terminal... and people sell programs to do it.... but Tiger and Leopard have t built in.. sort of....
The default file format when using SCREEN CAPTURE (ShiftCommand4) was a .pdf ... but then it was changed to .png Some people can't read .png... so I wanted my captures to be in .jpg format.
You can change the file format type of your SCREEN CAPTURE to any of the following:
JPG, JPG-2000, TIFF, BMP, PDF, Photoshop, PICT, SGI, PBG, TGA
But first you have to have a file you want to change (say it is a png).
    Open the file using Preview.
Once open, under File (in the menu bar) go down to SAVE AS.
There's you'll see FORMAT and a pull down menu. Choose which one you want...
Screen capture will now open your captured pictures in that format.
    Crazy, huh?

  • Nokia 5800 [ Screen and phone problems]

I got a problem with my nokia 5800 screen,
sometimes when my brightness is bellow 80% 2-3 flikering lines apear wherever i am ( home screen, watching a video, browser, call someone etc.)
when brightness is at 80%  its normal always( maybe of the high brightness i may not see the lines)
however this is annoying and i want to know if i can do anything about it !
on top of that my phones shuts down suddenly on its own  randomly!
the phone is functioning well running app without any problem and watching videos !
    skype

The 5800 is getting on in years now so it's definitely a hardware issue your facing. Your best bet is to visit a Nokia Care Point and see if it's worth the cost of repair otherwise you'd be better off getting a new phone.

  • Any way to get rid of the drop shadow on Screen Captures in Leopard?

i do a fair bit of procedure documentation work, and so use screen captures quite a lot. Since upgrading to leopard the screen grab tool now puts a 77(ish) pixel white border and drop shadow around the screen captures, which might look trendy for some things, but for the stuff I am doing is just annoying, and something that I have to remove from all of my screen captures.
Is there any way to turn this "feature" off.

There's a Terminal tweak that I got from Mac OS X Hints here:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080629181121863
You just copy-paste a line into Terminal.app and after a restart the cursed shadows are gone!
If you do a Command-Shift-4 then hit space for a window grab, then grab the Dock, then there's apparently a single funkiness with this fix, in that the resulting image in this specific case (of the Dock) is stretched horizontally. I haven't seen mention of any other side effects, and otherwise it's working fine on my system, but be aware of that.
The Dock shows up fine in any other type of grab, so since I never take a picture of just my doc using the grab window function, I'm more than pleased to use this and get useful window shots back again.
    Hope this helps!
