Nokia E71 question

Hello people,
I was thinking of getting a Nokia E71. But I read it only has monofone ringtones. Is this true? can that thing only play the dorky ringtones from back in the 90s or is that not true or a way to bypass?
thanks in advance,
Feint

Hi the E71 is a moden phone with all the features I have a MP3 playing as a ring tone and have used the same for the last few phones as we all stick to our tones so we all know whos phone is ringing. The E71 is a great phone the biggest issues I have had is with Bluetooth car kits and head sets other than that it's the best phone I have had and I have had a few as I am a Business Manager on the road most of the time and this is my point of contact. I do carry a spare battery when traveling as 3-4 hours talk time and MFE syn evey 15 mins does drain the battery. and when you add the sat nav going you can get the battery down to 2-3 hours of life with out a charger but I wouldn't change the phone and I have had mine since the first week they were out in the UK as my V8 died (after 3 months use) and I was going to go back for another E61 which I had for 2 years before.
I would recommend this phone and have done as all Business Managers at oure PLC now carry E71's

  • Nokia E71 Questions - 3G and GPS - URGENT PLEASE R...

Hi everyone! Hope you are doing well. I am a big noobie when it comes to phone services.
I am planning to buy an unlocked Nokia E71. My service provider is AT&T. I am currently using a Sony Ericsson w580i and I use the MediaNet data plan. However, I know the Nokia E71 is 3G capable.
My question is: Once I buy my Nokia E71:
    1) How do I enable it for 3G? Is there a seperate service I have to pay monthly like MediaNet to get the speeds of 3G? How do I suscribe to the 3G service on AT&T?
    2) Does Google Maps on the E71 give the exact location of me? My w580i only gives me an "accurate" location within 1100 meters, which is totally not good enough for me.
That would be all! Thanks everyone

I have AT&T with an old Cingular SIM card.  I popped it into my E71 and it works just fine.   I can set the phone to UMTS (3g) and it will connect and use it just fine for phones and data.  Though for data it appears (to me) to go slow like it's still using Edge for data.  I might need to go in and get a new SIM card meant for a 3G device to get actual 3G speeds.  But right now it is not a big deal for me.
3G is not a seperate service to pay for.  If you use it for voice then you don't need to do anything more.  Though for data.. like me.. you might need to get a newer 3G sim card to see its full speed potential. Be warned that you will need to get a data package (not the standard Pay Per Use). PPU will get $$$ very fast.  It is considered a smart phone and will cost like 29.99 for the unlimited data plan.  Though since AT&T doesn't have the E71 yet you can sneak by with the unlimited medianet option for 19.99.  Though if you use too much data AT&T might notice it and take the medianet option off without telling you and stick you on the pay per use plan which will cause your bill to be very $$$.
I have used google maps and it plays just fine with the internal GPS (you WILL need a data connection to use gmaps!)  I think it has said it has locked on to within 20meters for me.  I havnt used it in a while but I think that's the closest its got.
Another option is the builtin Nokia Maps.  Not as user friendly in my opinion. But at least you can download maps to a memory card and not have to worry about using data all the time.
    Hope this rambling helps.

  • Nokia E71: Messaging Button and Name and Date Form...

    Two questions:
    1. When in stand-by mode and I click on the Messaging button, it always directs me to my e-mail. I would like to set it as such that it will go to my Inbox, instead.
    2. Is there a name separator I can use? On my inbox, the name format is "Last Name First Name". Is there a way I can change it to "Last Name, First Name" or much better would be "First Name Last Name"?
    3. Lastly, I prefer my dates with the months spelled out, like "15 Nov 2008" instead of "15.11.08" It works for older Nokia models, like my brother's phone. Where can I set this for my new E71?

1: Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> General -> Personalisation -> One-touch Keys and change it from there. there are different options for short presses and long presses.
2: I think you need to get your contacts organised which in turn will organise your inbox! Go to your contacts -> Options -> Settings -> Name Display....
3: Can't help you with number 3 since they dont seem to have the ability to have the name of the month displayed, just the number of it. Maybe someone else knows how its done. Good luck to you.

  • How to report Nokia E71 localization error?

    Hi all!
The Swedish localization of the Nokia E71 interface has an error that has outlived several firmware upgrades. How Nokia has let this slip through is beyond me. How/where does one best report localization bugs?
For the interested, this is what I am talking about:
When viewing one of your contacts you see 'First name' and 'Last name'. The Swedish localization has it as 'Förnamn' (correct) and 'Namn' (incorrect). 'Last name' should of course be 'Efternamn'.
    See? Huge deal :-)
But back to my question - is there anyway to report this formally?
    Best,
    F.

Normally your channel to offer feedback is your local Nokia Care, but I'll pass your comments up the line also.
    Kind regards.

  • Nokia E71 time and date problems.

I cant ever set the time and date of my nokia E71. Anytime i access the time and date settings, it just doesn't go through. Please help me out.

    Hi Faces1,
    Welcome to Nokia discussions board!
In order to fix this issue, I advise you to perform a soft reset on your phone: type *#7780#. Default lock code is 12345. If the issue persists, perform a hard reset. First of all, back up your data using Nokia Suite (Tools > Back up). Once your data is fully backed up,  type *#7370# on the keypad.
Alternatively, you may also check for updates on Nokia Suite (by going to Tools > Updates).
Then try to set the time and date again.
Let us know how you get on and feel free to post any other questions you may have.

  • Nokia E71 -Hangs when we go to Maps

I recently purchase Nokia E71, Whenever i used to open the MAPS it hangs. I have waited for 5 or 6 hrs even it is not comming up. Everytime i needs to remove the battery and reset the Phone.
Is this the manufacturing defect of Phone or Maps will always hangs ?.   Any users or moderators having such kind of problem.
    Can you please suggest me.
    Thanks

    Hi roaming1977
I would check that in Menu > Tools > Settings > General > Positioning > Positioning methods that a valid network internet access point is defined, because if Assisted GPS feature can't get a network connection this can cause application to hang. Although in Nokia Maps application you can set "Go-online at start-up" to "always ask, no or yes" the Assisted GPS connection is a separate process. As you mention in another post that you don't have a "Data plan" then you need to DISABLE the Assisted GPS feature in "Positioning methods".
If it wasn't for need to backup essential data, I might have suggested a "hard reset" to return device to "out of the box" state to eliminate any possible software corruption. This would also be a good time to download latest version of Nokia Maps v2.0_4503 from here:http://europe.nokia.com/A4984199
Almost certainly this is a setting or software related problem and you would be also advised to download the latest regional maps to your device with Nokia Maploader on your PC.
Let us know how you are getting on and if you have any further questions.

  • Nokia E71 - some serious issues, and Nokia doesn't...

Well, I have owned the Nokia E71 for some weeks now, and while I must say that hardware, design, keyboard and display of this phone are well engineered, when it comes to software, there are many serious show-stopper bugs in many very basic applications which have been known for months and have so far not been taken care of by Nokia. New buyers, beware: 1) The Email-client has great difficulties coping with more than about 950 messages. After that, out of memory errors and lockups while deleting messages appear. Sometimes, repeatedly, all messages are lost. 2) The internet browser crashes at random intervals. 3) The calendar seems to sometimes produce buggy internal files, which in turn make the error intolerant sync-function crash when trying to transfer data to a PC. 4) The camera picture is very noisy in low light conditions and has a purple haze. The haze was finally corrected in firmware 210. 5) However, since firmware 200 the clock in not updated in standby. 6) Since firmware 200 the alarm repeat mode does sometimes not work when the phone was switched off and was not being charged. 7) When a software installation went wrong, on every startup annoying messages appear. Due to memory protection, this cannot be corrected from the phone, but only from a PC in mass storage mode. 8) When using mass storage mode, most menu item customisations are lost. 9) When doing a firmware update, all memory contents is lost. Users repeatedly have reported that restoring the necessary backup sometimes does not work, thus all data is lost. 10) The text color of the contacts list is always black. Instead of making this something dependent on the installed color theme, since firmware 200 the background in contacts is now always white, whatever the theme. Ugly. 11) Bluetooth connections are known to be unstable. 12) There is no stop-watch or count-down timer. 13) Hands-free volume is not loud enough. In short, if you want to use your Nokia E71 professionally, and not just to play around, think twice. Perhaps a Blackberry Bold or Curve are the better choice.

I have read the whole of this topic with great interest. I haven't got an E71 yet but decided to look up a bit about it first before deciding whether it was for me. I have been using a T2 palm which is now ancient and coming to the end of its life so need something that is going to be as reliable as it has been in the past. I also wanted to consolidate my phone with my diary. I am now in two minds as to whether to go for a smart phone at all :-S.
I don't think this discussion has anything to do with the decision as to whether to get a smart phone. It has to do with whether to get *this* smart phone. There are others, of course, and they should be considered.
The original question i was looking for on the forums was whether you can cut and paste entries in the calendar as that is something I use everyday, but now having read all the posts on this board I am worried that I will lose all my appointments and contacts!!
You aren't going to lose your appointments and contacts unless you are foolish enough not to sync your phone with a PC and to back up that PC. If you have data  that you care about in any electronic device and you don't back it up and the device loses the data or you lose the device you have only yourself to blame. Presumably you sync your T2 (a fine device, I have one, and two T3s as well)? Well, do the same with whatever phone you buy.
Can anyone convince me that I am doing the right thing in even considering a Nokia E71?
You've read what's been said here. I think the summary is that the hardware is very good, Symbian is a solid OS, but some of the phone and PC software, as well as the (website and phone) support is slipshod (I tried calling Nokia customer service the other day and their phone menu system went into a loop!). My experience is that while much of this is annoying as hell, I've managed to beat this thing into submission and make it usable, at least for me. And I use it both as an organizer (I'm finding that I use my T3 less and less, though I still keep it up-to-date, because there are things it can do that the E71 can't) and a phone. One of my requirements was that I wanted an unlocked phone. Because I am a light phone user (also occasional user of the web browser and email client; rarely use texting), I have a pay-as-you-go account, which is far less expensive than the usual contract account. The E71 is available unlocked at reasonable prices. Something equivalent, like the Blackberry Bold, was twice the price when I bought the Nokia in February. The iPhone wasn't available unlocked. The Google phone wasn't available unlocked and the reviews were lukewarm. The Palm Pre wasn't available. Etc. The E71 seemed like the most reasonable solution for me at the time. Of course, I didn't know about the problems I was to encounter, but, as I said,  I've worked around them.
So my advice to you is to look at the whole field of available smart phones, of which there are many, consider your needs and do cost/benefit analysis. I would include the E71 in your deliberations but certainly can't give it an unqualified recommendation. But I also can't say "you are completely insane if you buy this phone". It depends on your requirements and what you are willing to pay.
I hope this helps a bit.
    /Don Allen

  • Re: Nokia E71 & E66 New software available

On another issue with the E71 and the Bluetooth, I recently bought a Mazda RX-8 R3 (the 2009 model). The Nokia will pair with the R3's hands free system but, certain functions don't work, eg, hands free calling from the cars system!!
So I emailed the Mazda handsfree tech guys and this was their response: So if anyone finds an update to the bluetooth for the E71 that fixes this problem PLEASE let me know :-)

    Best Mr. Watsama,
    thank you for contacting us.
The Nokia E71 is not compatible with the Mazda RX-8 2009.
Therefore we cannot give a statement about whether it is (partial)
    compatible or not.
This might be the reason why it does not recognize the mobile phone.
If you have any further questions,

    Hi all,
I too have a Mazda burtooth system built in to my 09 Mazda 6. I presume the smae voice activated on as in the RX8. Same thing for me. The phone connects and you can recieve calls from the answer button but you have to send from the phone which is illegal in the UK. I dont have a fix, but i am aware that annoyingly the voice activated system works perfectly on my Nokia E51 which the 71 replaced. They are supposed to use the same operating system so does anyone know what has changed?????? I may have to go back to my old phone as i'm in the car all day as a rep and this is driving me insane!
    Help anyone!

In order to fix this issue, I advise you to reset your device. First of all back up your data using Nokia Suite.
Then type *#7370# on your phone's keypad. When prompted, enter 12345 as default lock code or the one you have changed it to.
Once the phone is restarted restore the data from Nokia Suite. That will solve the memory issue.

  • Nokia E71 Calendar Memos across multiple days

    Hello,
    I recently got a German Nokia E71
    (E71-1 Software Version: 100.07.76 08-06-2008).
I noticed a strange behavior of the calendar:
When I create a memo that goes across multiple days (lets say 10 days or 14 days) In Month view the memo is shown correctly for the set time. Also when synchronizing with MS Outlook the memo is shown correctly on the PC.
But when you open the Memo directly (open day view, select the memo and press the center of the nav-key) then the memo is displayed to last one day longer than originally specified.
For example I created a memo that should end on the 11th of September (actually it starts in August so maybe spanning the Month barrier may also cause the problem) but it is shown to end on September 12th when I open it. Although it is shown correctly in Month view (shown on 11-Sept, not shown on 12-sept).
    Maybe you have similar experiences?
Or an explanation for that behavior?
    Thanks and regards,
    Sebastian

I think I'm experiencing the same thing, Sebastian.
Phone: E71 bough from 3 in the UK ~20months ago.
    Firmware: 100.07.76 08-06-2008 RM-346 E71-1 (241.02)
    Here's how it happens:
Step 1)  I create a memo on the calendar with the phone.
Step 2)  I do an Ovi sync over the air (i.e. there is no use of the PC Suite or Microsoft Outlook going on).
Step 3)  Some (but not all) of my single day memos are spread over two (2) days.
How it should look when correct: http://tinyurl.com/ovi-cal-memo-right
How it actually looks when wrong: http://tinyurl.com/ovi-cal-memo-wrong
As you can see in the 'wrong' example, instead of memos showing up as lasting for 1 day duration it's apparently "23 hours, 59 minutes" in duration, and ends on 18/07/2011.  And yet it's spread over the 18th and 19th on the month view.  The correct date (as entered and displayed on my phone) is actually the 19th!  The same goes for all those other 'wrong 2-day memos': they should all only be shown on the second of the two day bar that's visible in month view.
At the moment, for some unknown reason, the problem seems confined to April-October of this year (and subsequent and prior years) and dates are stretched back by a day so they appear on the web version of the Ovi calendar as lasting for two (2) days instead of one (1).  But I think that the problem has been more widespread and across-the-board in the past, and it may have put dates forward by an aditional day (although I can't be sure on that.
Thankfully, all these memos remain as correct on the phone and seem to be unaffected by the sync.
When it first happened I made an attempt to correct the Ovi Web Calendar memo sync problem before (thinking it was a once only bug) by going through all the Ovi calendar entries on the web interface and tidying things up that way.  But I'm not prepared to go through all that hassle again.
It's a real niggle, to say the least.
    What can be done?
    Thanks for any help.

  • Lack of My Folder support for Nokia E71, even in n...

With my 6230i PC suite allowed me to see and manage folders and messages under My Folders. Now with my spanking new E71 it doesn't. Not only does it not let me manage them but I cannot even view their contents. This is not even supported with the latest Beta version of Nokia Communication Centre (Version 2.0). This is surely a major step backwards? Some problems
    - Messages on my 6230i under My folders did not restore to the E71 and I have found no way to get them across. The 6230i does not let me move them back to the Inbox.
    - Copy and paste between phones is not possible
    - If you right clicked Inbox in Nokia Communication Centre 1.0 a New folder option appeared. This did not work. The solution in the new version appears to be to remove the option altogether.

    HI,
One option may be, you can copy the 6230i messages to the PC and then paste that in Nokia e71. Hope it may help you

  • Nokia E71 Fading Text On Display

    Hello Nokia Owners,
Hopefully someone has seen this issue and have an easy fix, as I'm frustrated about this oddball occurrence. I'm wondering if there's a QA/QC issue at hand where these are being manufactured?
Within the past 6 days, I've purchased 2 brand new Nokia E71 phones from 2 different Walmart stores, 30 mins of each other.  These are phones for the Straight Talk prepaid service. I have not yet activated the phones on ST, as my goal is to first test the basic functionality to determine if it's worth the $200 and will satisfy my needs.
What's happening on both phones, in the same exact manner and location on the phone, is that the menu title name for some menus have fading text. It appears as though there's a display issue. I've attached some screenshots to make it easy to see what I'm experiencing.
However, when I've tested playing the included videos in the phone at full screen, it appears to play the videos through the menu title name area with no fading. The same goes for looking at images - I do not see any fading with the included images in that area.
I have done a Soft Reset on both phones using the *# option and from the "Factory Reset" option in the menu. This has not resolved it on either phone.  I have also changed themes, changed menu colors, changed the font size, none of which has resolved this.
Thus far, I've returned one phone to Walmart and ready to return the next one now due to this issue. I'm willing to try a 3rd but that's where my limit is. I really like this phone and want it, but if this issue is indicative of a fully dead or fading display after a short period of use, I will not make the investment.
    Any help is most appreciated.

Short answer: I don't know.  Other phones (the E52 and maybe the E5) have issues with the display lighting at odd times as the keyboard lock or phone lock activates (not typically when it deactivates).  So it could be a firmware issue.  But it could have also been a bad phone.
    AdriaticBlue wrote:
By any chance, have you performed a software update on your E73? That's the only step I have not taken, as it appears I need to activate the phone on service to do any software updates via TracFone.  I can (and have) tested the E71 on my WIFI connection which works great, but I cannot invoke a software update via WIFI.
Mmm, you could try Nokia's Ovi Suite or Software Updater software for Windows.  Instead of downloading a small patch file, you'd be downloading a complete 50 MB+ firmware file instead.  You might see a message that no updates are available, but it would be worth a try.
But something to understand about Nokia phones: they're all different.  You can have two phones with the same OS, released within months of each other (my T-Mobile E73 is very similar to the E72) and have very different issues.  Maybe they each get firmware releases at nearly the same time, and one update fixes a bug while the other includes the bug.  (I'm  exaggerating a little, but you get my point.)  The E71 is a feature pack 1 phone while the E72/E73 are feature pack 2, so while the phones share lots of surface features, their guts are often quite different.  For example, I get the impression that Nokia made substantial changes to the hardware drivers from FP1 to FP2, but not always for the better.  I have done several software updates to my phone, but have never seen the problem you described.  Hopefully it stays that way.

  • Connecting laptop to nokia E71

Hi i just got a Nokia E71 from straight talk i was wandering if i could use it to connect my laptop to the internet if so how can i do that. I have downloaded  pc suite on my computer but its having trouble connecting to the internet. Thanks in advance for the help

Hi, check out this tutorial first to make sure you do it the correct way: http://europe.nokia.com/support/download-software/pc-suites/how-to/connect-to-the-web
If your device is brand new, I would check that you have the right internet acces point settings installed in your device. If you are missing internett and mms settings, you should usually be able to get them from your service providers internet site. If you cannot find it there, give them a call.
You will have to connect using your service providers net on your phone, beware of that if you don't have a surf plan, I would check out the costs.

    Hi,
I have a Nokia E71 and cannot send emails from the gmail or pop 3 accounts set up on the device.
I can recieve emails and I know the settings are correct for the incoming and outgoing servers.
A google search has shown a number of people had this problem but I can't see any solutions.
An hour on the phone to Nokia care resulted in checking I have the correct system software on the phone ( I do).
Can any one help this problem?

Sometimes, internet service providers block access to any SMTP servers but their own over their networks. If you are sending via mobile internet then that could be the problem, try with your network operator's SMTP server (I have two mailboxes set up on my phone, one using my ISP's SMTP for when I connect via WLAN and one using the Proximus server for when I use GPRS/3G).
