Nokia E72: Does Google Sync Work ?

Hello,
I want to sync google calendar entries with my Nokia E72. Google provides Sync for doing this. But they also have mentioned to use Mail For Exchange version 2.09 or later for setting up Google Sync. I tried once using mail for exchange and phone hung. I don't know if its because of this version conflict. Has anyone tried Google Sync with nokia E72 ? Did it work?
Appreciate your inputs.
Thanks
venks

This was the mail I've sent on Jan 29th. Got response from Nokia Messaging Support 2 days ago (Feb 6).

Hi,
Last week I've sent you an e-mail about my problem regarding Nokia Messaging Service. I cannot get e-mails through service and also cannot logon to email.nokia.com site, too. I receive this error message:
We are unable to process your request at this time. Try again later.Take me to the Nokia Messaging home page.
How long should I wait till I get a response from you?

  • E72 does not sync all of the memo field in an outl...

I was called at a customer last week to solve a Nokia e72 problem: when syncing with outlook, only part of the memo content of the outlook contact fields was synced. There was also no way telling which part would be synced: could be some piece from right in the middle. Can anybody tell me if there are limits to the memo field in the contacts on an E72, so that it prevents total syncing?

Well, I guess I have to download some other software to make my apple product work. Really great stuff you guys sell. I will never buy another apple product. My Iphone, Ipod and Itunes are junk

  • To what extent does auto-syncing work...?

I have researched this but can not find the answer anywhere.
I need to know to what extent does auto-syncing work?
I started my library quite some time ago, and I didn't want to use the auto-sync feature. My library has grown very large and to be honest, I still wouldn't mind doing the manual syncing if my behavior and/or needs hadn't changed. However, I am now going back and adding artwork and making some slight modifications to several songs. Overall, through one type of change or another, this will affect the vast majority of my library. What I need to know is if I were to make info-related changes, will the syncing make the modifications on the ipod, or will they be ignored?
For instance, here are some of the types of changes that I am beginning to make:
    - Adding Artwork.
    - Changing a track name from "Living in a box" to "Livin' in a box"
    - Adding info to the various fields such as album author, comments.
    - Modifying a track name from "Love is a Battlefield" to "Love Is A Battlefield"
    - Changing an album name from "Miami Vice Soundtrack" to "Miami Vice [Soundtrack]" or "Shrek (Soundtrack)" to "Shrek [Soundtrack]"
    - Updating an artist's name from "Jackson Five" to "Jackson 5"
Any insights would be most appreciative.
    Bill

While in Manual sync, any changes you make in iTunes will not get put onto the iPod until you drag the songs over.
Any changes you make on the iPod thru iTunes will not be on the original in iTunes.
    Any rating,
Any reason you are using manual sync instead of Auto sync?
If you don't want (or can't) to put everything in iTunes on the iPod, use selected playlists and manage those playlists.
When you make changes to the songs in iTunes, they will get updated onto the iPod automatically.

  • It does not cover my question about in what order does the sync work?

It does not cover my question about in what order does the sync work?
Does the first signed on computer copy its information to the cloud?
Does the second computer/pad/cell then download the information from the cloud overwriting the information on the second device even if some of the information is different?
What happens to the information on the second device that is not in the cloud?
If you delete a record (eg a bookmark) from the second device how does it then delete it on the first device?
What are the keys to the different types of information?

Hi I have answered you questions inline below:
Does the first signed on computer copy its information to the cloud?
Yes when you first set up the account or when you first add a device to the cloud, if it is not the first time, it will merge with the other data
Does the second computer/pad/cell then download the information from the cloud overwriting the information on the second device even if some of the information is different?
By default it merges. There is no option to change this.
What happens to the information on the second device that is not in the cloud?
It will sync at the next sync interval if that data is selected to sync.
If you delete a record (eg a bookmark) from the second device how does it then delete it on the first device? What are the keys to the different types of information?
It resolved the entry the next time the first and second device syncs. Can you elaborate on the second part of this question?

We don't have an iPhone app due to Apple's restrictive app store rules.

  • Nokia e72, gmail setup + syncing contacts and cale...

    My objective was to
    1) get my contacts into the phone from this account, as I had on my old windows mobile device
    2) set up my gmail account on my new nokia e72
    1) getting contacts from gmail into the phone.
    Go here:
    http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=147951
and carefully do whatever is instructed.
*This works for calendar also (I assume you will want your google calendar to come into the phone, and sync thereafter. But all-day entries on google become 24 hour entries, modified by your timezone (eg xyz birthday, 15 mar 2010 5.00 am to 16 mar 2010 5.00 am). Otherwise the calendars seem to sync ok therafter (didn't spend much time there).
*This does not work for tasks. (read the google sync instructions carefully for nokia. but not for tasks, or for email bodies (though email headers sync, and you can probably create and send, and delete etc your email on the phone)
*This does not work email either, ie you can see the message headers, but can't see the bodies of emails on the phone.
The explanation for this I found after much digging is that Mail for Exchange on Nokia is actually meant for Microsoft ActiveSync servers, and Google is providing limited sync facilities using this ....system. (correct me if I'm wrong). See the datasheets on Nokia Europe websites about Mail for Exchange.
Over all, a pity, but you can't blame Nokia. As for Google (in whose hands further improvement lies for MFE playing nice with google mail), I hope, and believe they will make things better here (unless they lose their interest in it like they did with google gears).
2)Now getting your email from gmail into your nokia E72: Here Nokia is at fault, and a serious deficiency. I went to email setup in the menu's and started the wizard to create a new account. It seemed to have preconfigured setups for common email providers like gmail, yahoo etc. I started the gmail set up wizard, keyed in my username and password, then waited 5 seconds, and the screen went back to the previous one. This kept repeating, every time I tried. Tried everything: checked internet connectivity (wifi), closed all other apps including the MFE I had set up earlier, switched off and on the phone, everything short of standing on my head. So what works? How do you set up a personal gmail account on your nokia e72? go here:
    http://www.techniqx.com/2010/02/workaround-for-configuring-gmail.html
(I paste that text here in case that page is removed:
"The email software in Nokia E72 still has lots of bugs. To configure your Gmail account, it’s not as easy as selecting Gmail and entering the credentials. That simply won’t work as there is a bug. Instead, workaround is to select “Other” and enter a false id like [email protected], this will take you to the next page to select the type. Select “POP/IMAP”. Now, you will get an option to enter your credentials and modify advanced settings. Here change your email id back to [email protected] and enter the credentials as mentioned here> (the gmail site for imap manual setup):
    http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78799
And you have gmail set up. Quite inelegant process of setting up gmail on this nokia phone, I would say.
Nokia, please iron out the bugs and inconsistencies in your flagship models' primary functions. Otherwise the phone functions very well, the interface is nice and attractive. And while the bugs are still there, please put up the limitations and  the workarounds if any prominently. Nobody expects 100 % perfection.

I had a number of problems setting up Google Apps with my E72 phone. Mail, Calendar and Tasks were not syncing.
    Mail
I have spent far too long setting up google apps to sync properly with my new E72 (latest software installed). It really is a superb phone but if Nokia is not going to fully support integration with Google Apps with a simple app then Android and Blackberry will simply take over for Apps users. It really isn't up to Google to solve this its up to Nokia. Are we going to move from Google Apps or change our phones????
I have gmail and  business google apps accounts and both are now syncing properly with what seems to be pretty good Nokia email software on the phone. This is allowing me to receive, send, view attachments, view sent mail etc. Here are the steps I took from the beginning. Its a repeat of some of the good advice above which helped me on my long journey!
    1. Enable IMAP for the google accounts. Couldn't get anything to work otherwise.
    2. Follow this instruction https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78887
    3. The inbox should now be working however you now need to map the other folders you want to see on your mobile. While at your inbox go to >settings>mailbox settings>what to sync>folder subscriptions.
    4. Click on Gmail and highlight the folders you want to see
    5. Go back to your inbox and go to the dragdown list of folders and highlight 'More Folders'. Under 'Gmail' you will find your sent items along with attachments etc. Problem solved. Its not a pretty solution but at this stage like me you just want something that works.
    Calendar
This was a nightmare and I am now running a third party app called Googasync which is working fine. In 10 days time I will need to buy this so if someone knows how to setup calendar syncing properly without it please let me know.
    Tasks
Googasync will not sync Tasks and I don't know if there is any app out there that will. If someone can help please let me know. Surely this should be pretty simple!?!?!
By the way I mailed Nokia support last Thursday on the above but have not received a reply other than to tell me that Google Apps is 3rd party software and not supported. Nokia needs to wise up.
In summary its a great phone and I've moved from a Blackerry Bold to it but I shouldn't be spending days finding workarounds!!

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Yup, by TOS I meant terms-of-service
As far as I know the way it works is that (1) your phone maintains a connection with (one of the) Nokia servers, so that as soon as the Nokia server has anything to say (e.g. "new e-mail"), your phone gets it; and (2) the Nokia servers fetch your e-mails so that (1) can work.
Now, I don't know how (2) works. In theory the Nokia server should act like an IMAP client, and should be using IDLE in order to fetch the e-mails as soon as the server gets them.
I don't use Nokia Messaging anymore (I now prefer Profimail on my E75), but for some time I did research a bit on that topic, and noticed that the Nokia server was making an IMAP connection to my e-mails server (fastmail.fm) every 15min, i.e. not keeping it open permanently using IDLE. It may be that during those 15min sessions IDLE was used, and then the Nokia server simply decided to close and re-open the connection. That may sound illogical, but perhaps it's more reliable this way.
In any case, I was getting my e-mails on the phone instantly, i.e. the reconnection every 15min had no impact on the actual push delivery.
Apparently there are many people having problems with Nokia Messaging. I don't know if Gmail or Yahoo allow you to see a connection log, but if they do, please have a look and see if and how often a server from Nokia/Finland is connecting to your IMAP server.
Also, I would just in case log on on email.nokia.com and make sure that your account is active (the E72 should give you a lifetime subscription, but please double check).

  • How far ahead does calendar sync work?

Does anyone know how far ahead the calendar sync works? Or is it limited to a certain number of entries - if so how many?

    Thanks.
I had a few entries that didn't sync about 6 months ahead but they appear to be OK now. I've only recently started using sync (to Google calendar and contacts) and I've had a few teething problems. However most seem to have righted themselves so it's almost as if sync needs some sort of running-in period before it's fully up to speed! Odd.

  • Nokia E72- email service not working anymore

    Hi there,
I recently bought a Nokia E72 for 300 bucks (euros). It looked like a perfect phone and everything seemed to work very well since two days ago.
I did NOTHINg but suddenly both my yahoo mail and gmail account on mobile does not work, not receiving anything.
When I tries to delate both the email account a message like this : "you must be connected to delete account" appears.
I re-did anything restoring the initial settings and trying to re-configurate the accounts. It seems like the authomatic configuration doesn't work at all..when I type email address and password it searches for settings but then anything happens.
anybody has the same problems? I'm very disappointed because , so far, nokia never let me down..that's why I choosed a nokia phone instead of a blackberry.

I was facing the same problem.
    Try this.
Suppose you are trying to configure gmail account, then select gmail and enter username/password then it comes back to the main screen ( list of type of accounts ). Again select gamil and enter username/password.. Since I have earlier set up my gmail account, so it was asking the email and password I used for the first time to use nokia messaging application. If you don't remember yours, go to email.nokia.com and there you can try out you possible email/password combinations.
Also you can edit settings on email.nokia.com for each email account. My email account in Nokia E72 wasn't updating. Then I checked these settings and found the problem.
    Try if this helps.

  • End of GOOGLE SYNC work around (or app) for WIRELESS sync for Gmail calendar

    thnx for help !
i use my google calendar exclusively -no Outlook at all, no desktop manager ever.
With my Curve  i used to use GOOGLE SYNC to immediately update and sync manually.
There is no more GOOGLE SYNC (support ended) ...  Not for my new Tour as it still was working on Curve 12/12/12.
I timed my update I made on my Google calendar online and it took 30 minutes for the bbery calendar to show the update using the wireless sync in the Tour setup.
HOW CAN I MANUALLY tell my bberry to sync wirelessly instead of waiting for however long it takes to auto sync ?
Why did it take so long?
is there a WIRELESS work around or an APP  for the end of Google sync?
    Using Tour 9630
    thanks again!

Could you please ellaborate on which other helps, you've tried?
Data plans are not available for 9780 in Denmark, rendering me unable to access my Google Calendar, except from going through a browser - not ideal, by any means.
So... Any workaround would be appreciated - even only for primary calendar.
I know Nokia has working apps such as Googasync, but I'm unable to find similar for BB (which is curious, as they are both based on S60).

  • Does remote sync work on a P990i with a .Mac account?

As there is a sad lack of iSync for the above phone does anyone know if remote sync works on a P990i with a .Mac account?
And if so, what are the settings?
    TIA

The version from Microsoft is very buggy and crashes a lot for me. I've had better luck with CoRD (which crashes on rare occasions) and have compiled the Linux rdesktop, which runs like lightning but doesn't have the nice features of CoRD.

  • Will Google Sync work after restore?

I set up my phone with Google Sync (using Exchange) a few months ago for push. I know Google stopped new accounts from using this method after Jan 30th. However, I have to restore my phone as new due to some issues. Will I still be able to set up Google Sync or am I screwed? Thanks!

It's not at all clear to me if you'll be able to continue to use ActiveSync after a restore.
Here's some information on how to set up your phone if you can't:
    http://www.mactrast.com/2012/12/how-to-setup-google-email-contacts-calendar/
There's also a link at the beginning of the article to information about the Google decision. I haven't looked at it in a while, though.
    Best of luck.

  • E72 - does not sync contacts cretaed on phone to s...

When I initialised my E72 for syncing with outlook, I included the syncing of contacts.  All my Outlook contacts synced to the phone but I am having trouble making new contacts created on the phone sync back to my outlook the other way.
I never had this trouble with my N97.  I have tried the syncronisation setting on the contacts in question as both private and public both nothing gets them across to my Outlook server.  Please help!
(BTW The E72 completely dominates the N97.  The E72 is the total package, I love this phone.  N97 - the flip out just doesn't work, the software is clunky, its terrible for email.  The screen was only plus.  My N97 will sit in a drawer now.  An expensive mistake but having a good phone makes life so much more fun!)

yep - me too...I actually get it happening the other way around too...so ones created on the phone don't turn up on the server
...used to work on a newer exchange server with the e71
is there a awy to get a nokia dude to look at this issue...or do we just all them up one by one
