Nokia E72 (Updating the maps)

Ive noticed that when i connect any E series nokia phone to my PC i never get prompted for map updates. But surely there would need to be some available as there are always new roads.
My current map version is:
0.1.28.107
But i dont get notified about a map update for Australia when i connect it to PC with Nokia suite.
If there was a map update available would Nokia Suite inform me?
Thanks.

Regaridng the maps, Do you think its likely Nokia would bring any more actual maps out for the E Series S60 phones or would they be discontinued now and Nokia would only work on maps for the Lumia etc? Highly likely all resources directed at Lumia devices from now on.
Thanks very much for the link so that's to the latest version of the client i can use with my E73 right? AFAIK, yes
But what about actual maps themselves? Could i download maps for Nokia Lumia (because theyd probably be regularly updated) and have them able to work with my E73? No, not compatible at all

  • Will Nokia keep update Symbian Maps in the future?

    Hello!
I have a E6 and a 701 purchased this year (new, from the store) and I am wonder if I will keep using Nokia Maps in the future with the updates that will become.
What if Microsoft will stop updating Symbian Maps once they bought Nokia???

I don't want to last forever!
For sure we can define what "lifetime" means! Lifetime of my device, clearly! Or... lifetime of my cat. Or of my dog... Or lifetime of my gym shoes.
Now seriously, this kind of "lifetime"=dishonest trick... Probably lifetime of my device (obliviously not of my own life) AS LONG NOKIA COMPANY EXIST! But if Nokia will sell the soul of Finland with little devil like Stephen Elop and become Microsoft, it's clear that "lifetime" will become the lifetime of a butterfly...
In my opinion, in short time Nokia will be just dust, history and melancholy... If you love Symbian models, keep them with care and never let them go.
Windows Phone is a joke. A bad one.
    Elop has succesfuly killed Nokia.

  • Nokia E72 encryption & OVI Maps

    Hi,
I have two issues about the E72:
    1. My E72 came with a 4GB microSD card with OVI Maps installed on it. Unfortunately there are only 1023 MB free out of 4GB, so I planned to buy a bigger card. I would like toi know if I can simply copy all the data from the opriginal 4GB card to the new one? Will the applications still work?
    2. If I enable phone memory encryption in my phone, some applications stop working, i.e. OVI Maps does not work anymore, OVI Store stops working. I have to disable the phone memory encryption in order applications restart working. Is there a way to havbe phone memory enabled and still have the applications working fine?
    Thanks.

I did stop using encryption as there is a slight loss of speed and overall I concluded that it was not really safe since people could access my data without knowing the lock code. (a probable exploit scenario using Voyager Home screen). I mentioned that in another post (no one seemed to worry).
As far as I can tell, in that setup encryption is useless and ends up being annoying (because Nokia forced a maximum of 20 minute time-out for the lock in that case, meaning that it auto-locks sometimes when not handy.... while navigating in the car, listening to audiobooks, etc).

Going to reply to my own post saying that the annoying 20 minute limit for auto-lock when encryption is still enforced in the new firmware released this week (051).
If you are using encryption, it is not possible to have it set to higher values.
I'm re-encrypting my E72 (ram and card) to see how it performs now. Maybe it still crashes some apps when it auto-locks, making it useless for instance for trips while GPS navigating.
Will need to test to see if it is still possible to bypass the mem+card encryption code using JBakTaskman/Voyager Home as it was before... but I bet they didn't fix it.
Lame Nokia, lame... strong encryption still not useful.

  • Request for future Nokia E72 updates...

    I just used a Nokia E73 for T-Mobile.
It's software is a bit better than the one on the E72.
In the E73, the optical joystick is smoother and faster. The "lock keys" function is now available as an option for the selection keys.
I'd like to see the same tweaks on the E72.
Is anyone with me on this?

all you can do just wait. Nokia will release updates occasionally without notice. so no one knows when exactly release dates.

  • When will nokia be updating the firmware on the 58...

just wondering when the next firmware uodate will be released for the 5800. the rumours going around saying there is a new homescreen and kinetic scrolling coming with the next firmware update.
its hard to use the fone when u got loads of apps.
some sites say that it is getting the n97 homescreen but some say its getting the 5530 homescreen. either 1 is good for me.
if the 5530 can come with that type of homescreen why didnt they bring it with the 5800.
it would make the fone alot better.

As long as you remember that rumours is exactly what they are, you'll be fine.
With very few exceptions (only PR2.0 and PR2.1 for the N97 AFAIK), Nokia does not announce details of firmware updates in advance. Nobody knows for sure what will be in the next update for the 5800 or indeed if there will be one at all, although a few recent events do suggest that there will be an update in the not too far future.
So, it might be true, but don't get your hopes up based on rumours spread by people who are only going on guesswork and wishful thinking.

  • Wake up nokia and update the brand new 5800

seriously nokia - if you read these discussions i do have to say how disappointing it is that we should spend the money on such a nice phone, but have to pay for such essentials as a more user friendly home screen or threaded sms conversation (since your 2 yr old beta program is not available to the 5800)

Threaded SMS messages are hardly essential since there are low limits on character numbers (unless you want to be charged for multiple messages), so such an app would be used by a very small number of people. In any case, the 5800 is only a few months old. Unless after two years millions of people are screeng for this app in an S60 5th Edition version, why rush to create it?
The home screen may or may not be changed in future updates, but let's not forget that it is not a high-end model like its new sister the N97, products are developed for specific markets not the individual tastes of a small few.

  • Is it possible to alert Apple to update the Maps app to reflect  incorrect route advice?

Can Apple update its route planning software ?
This is the route of the problem as sent to TomTom and Garmin Sat Nav providers.
Hi there, I work in the Heritage Sector at an Irish National Monument called NEWGRANGE. We are experiencing a lot of problems here with Sat Nav system users. Here is the problem. The name Newgrange is iconic among pre historic monuments in Europe. It is almost a brand name at this stage and understandably it is the first name that thousands of end users key into their satnav systems. Heres the rub; Access to the Newgrange National monument is INDIRECT, via a Visitor Centre called Bru na Boinne ( Irish Gaelic ) which is several KMs away on the opposite side of the river and is a 10 km drive away. As a result the word NEWGRANGE being pre-eminent in most tourists minds, 9000 - 10,000 visitors per annum are consequently arriving at the wrong place. This is causing a lot of unnecessary anger and frustration among these well intended visitors and indeed among my own staff. The Solution; Is it possible to re-route people via an 'alert ' facility in the software, or perhaps offer a drop down menu with options for the end user, for example 1 Newgrange National Monument 2. Newgrange Townland 3 Newgrange Farm with the default set a Newgrange National Monument. Please let me know if this is possible and if you could open up a line of contact for discussion on the matter, I would really appreciate it.. • Nokia e72 and where did the memory go????

New Nokia e72, after the disappointing Nokia E75 i really didn`t expect Nokia to release another unfinished phone!
Dont get me wrong, great Phone the E72, solid hardware, but it has the same memory problem found in other nokia devices. 42 M at start up. Tried to go on the internet with the build in browser, 2 big flash sites like CNN and sadly the memory was down to between 356 K to 1 M, and the phone didn´t react anymore. After shuting down the browser, the E72 had 42 M in free memory again. It's the same story when using Spotify or Youtube.
Is there any one else with the same problem?  What will/can Nokia do about it?
    Best regards

I am using the program PhoNetInfo to check for available RAM.  Find it at http://www.patrickfrei.ch/phonetinfo/index.html.  Not sure if there's an easier solution?  You will need to follow the instructions to have it signed at http://symbiansigned.com for it to work.
As for the main thread, I am using an E73, which is basically the same as an E72.  Memory was one of the shortcomings I knew about when buying the phone, but so far I have hit only one browser "Out of memory" error.  Guess the sites I use either have a mobile version or simply aren't so memory intensive?  But I might look at this problem from the other perspective.  Unless they're loaded with pictures, web sites that trigger "Out of memory" are probably obscenely FAT!  I marvel at the design of certain modern web sites.  It's as if the programmers get paid by line of code, or are in competition to win this year's Rube Goldberg prize, for the most unnecessarily complicated invention.  Try downloading such a web site over a dial-up connection.  In this case, the problem is totally different, but the resulting frustration is the same.  And IMHO, the cause is the same: BAD DESIGN.  Simpler is better for visitors and both cheaper and easier to maintain.
Has anybody tried the Skyfire?  While it likely has some problems of its own, I assume it will work around a straightforward "Out of memory" error...because it's not a real web browser?

Hi, could anyone help me I was just wondering if I bought a nokia e72 from the US, would I be able to use it in the UK or would I have to unlock it or something??

If you have the E72-2, you can make calls and use WLAN, but you will not be able to use the 3 and 3.5G networks in the UK. Dial *#0000# for specs.

  • Update GCC map

I have received a Nokia Auto 500 Navigation as a gift. The GCC maps version installed in it is as of Feb 28, 2008. Now, I want to update the maps, but I don't know how. I have searched the Nokia website but could not find it. I have also gone through forums, but other other members have mentioned that it is not possible. Kindly someone advise me as to what to do? Is it possible to update the maps? If yes, how?

You should update the sitemap.xml and notify the search engines anytime you add new content. The easiest way to do this quickly is this...

Sitemap Automator soon pays for itself and has the ability to quickly identify and track down broken links which can save hours of time.

  • Stunning audio/video performance on Nokia E72.

I bought my E72 a week ago and one of the first thing on the to-do list, was to load it with high quality video material and my goodness, this mobile phone can deliver stunning performance.
Using YouTube downloader addon in Firefox, I found quite decent HD material. Downloaded it onto my computer (Lenovo Z61p).
Next step:  Using Pazera MP4 to AVI converter. Transforming from MP4 to lossless HuffYUV video and lossless PCM audio AVI file, keeping aspect ratio and all pixels. During the process, I kept an eye open and noticed how many frames per second the video contained and of course pixel width/height.
Next step: Using Windows Media Encoder, I had the video transformed to 320x240 if the original material had the same 4:3 aspect. Otherwise I had videos done so it matched either 320px width or 240px in height according to the original video aspect ratio.
Using the encoder WMV-9 I had to try several times in order to find the highest possible video quality.
A couple of HD music videos from youTube, Destinys Child "Say My name" and "Bootylicious" were the first to undergo transformation. the material itself is upscaled SD, but it's okay, since the final results has to be within a frame of 320x240 pixels.
I had the material encoded with (video) 3584 kbit/sec and (audio) 320 kbit/sec, Videosmoothness at 100 and keeping the framerate.
The result was stunning. But it still seem, that WMV material is more demanding on the CPU than appreciated. The result videos does contain jitter or perhaps even lost frames.
Yesterday I had a BluRay-rip of Baraka made. The Baraka movie is one of the absolutely best BluRay discs available.
This time I raised the max bitrate in Windows Media Encoder to 6000 kbit/sec. I've noticed in my previous experiments, that even though you choose a high setting in the encoder and choosing CBR, the encoder is actually using some kind of variable bitrate and the average bitrate is still lower than the ultra high settings of 3500-6000 kbit/sec. But by using ultra high settings, the encoder have room to give detailed footage enough bits leaving it without any digital artifacts such as macroblocking, which I hate.
The result. Well. The 320x240 matrix sure does have some impact on video material containing horizontal and vertical lines. It doesn't look too good to be honest. But organic shapes, such as animals, plants and human beings really looks amazing on a mobile phone )
But it still contained small amounts of jitter. During moments when I specifically knows the encoder used high bitrate like 5500 kbit/sec, the E72 lost a couple of frames.
Now. I have to do more experiments. Last night I found a way to make MP4's directly from a DVD, still containing subtitles. The material was the Twilight movie. My daughter, age 13, also got a Nokia E72.
The first experiments with small clips from the Twilight DVD showed, that the E72 can handle MP4 video at 8000 kbit/sec much better than WMV at 6000 kbit/sec. I noticed absolutely no jitter at all, even when using an ultra high bitrate setting like 8000 kbit/sec. Promising )
But....in order to enjoy high quality video material on your Nokia E72, I've noticed that you have to watch them in full screen. The socalled normal window (inside RealPlayer) degrades the video severe.
You also have to copy final video material directly to the phone. Don't let the Nokia PC-Suite transform the video material. Even the socalled "High Quality" setting in PC-Suite reduces video material to roughly 480 kbit/sec and that can't be recommended.
Now....the hunt is on to find the breakpoint of the CPU, using MP4 material. If it melts, it's my own responsibility. But for the time being, 8000kbit/sec (video bitrate, MP4) is no problem for E72.
I forgot to say: The audio quality on E72 is great. 9.5 stars out of 10. I've used Sennheiser HD600 headphones.

I've just found a splendid piece of software. Avidemux.
It can convert mkv directly into MP4.
As we speak, I'm experimenting with some videomaterial, which look promising. I'll report back at a later point in time.

  • How does the Maps app work?

I'm considering buying the software upgrade, but I don't understand how the maps application can possibly work. It requires wi-fi, so how will it work when you're trying to get somewhere and you're driving? Certainly there's no wi-fi in the car!
Can anyone explain this to me? Thanks!

You could just drive into a sub-division and hope somebody has an unprotected wireless network when you are lost...
The map app was originally made for the iPhone which with the unlimited data plan through At&T it can update the map and search on the fly as long as you are in a service area. Unfortunately for the ipod the map app is not as powerful as the iPhone because you can't get a map anywhere, it is the same app, but you get the idea.

  • Gmail would not configure on Nokia E72

    Hello Friends,
I recently bought a Nokia E72. The Problem is, it wouldn't let me configure my gmail account. It works for Yahoo, hotmail etc and OTHER gmail accounts, just not mine. It doesnt throw any errors either. I wonder if it has anything to do with the phone or with MY gmail settings on the web.  My gmail account would work on another E72. Complicated eh?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

From your message, you've tried your google mail account on another E72. Google mail is accessed through Nokia Messaging (to give push email) - Nokia Messaging is tied to the ownership of the E72 - I don't know for sure, but maybe setting it up on another phone has caused a problem?
