Nokia Experience (N97 and 5800)

About two weeks ago I was in the market for new a new cell phone...being an AT&T user I decided to go unlocked instead of buying a subsidised phone.  After searching the net I gave up and went to a cell phone "boutique" store here in Washington DC which specialize in unlocked phones.  This place came highly recomended so I gave them a try.  I went into the store to find that there was a lot of Nokia advertisement in the store.  In the past I haven't dealt with nokia much.  I told the salesman what I was looking for and he first tried to sell me an IPhone but at $800 unlocked I passed.  I then told him that I was also looking for a phone for my girlfriend.  I have big fingers so I needed a keyboard...long story short I left the store with an N97 for myself and a 5800 for my GF.
I should have done more research on Nokia and not just listen to the salesman.
The first few days were great then came an update for the N97 and things seemed wonderful.  But things started going south for both phones.  Since the 5800 belonged to my GF and ultimately caused me the most grief we'll start with that one.
5800:
My GF uses the phone for three things...talking, texting and facebook.  The phone is untouched outside of the latest updates and adding the Facebook app.  Every so often the phone will freeze after a phone call, she is usually around me when this happens and she just throws the phone at me and says fix it.  The Facebook app is useless and doesn't come close to any other Facebook app out there (I hear it constantly).  The web browser will shut down on it's own for no reason.  She has like 1000 friends literally and she find scrolling through her contacts annoying and the search function is not always helpful.  There are many other little small glitches that she complains about and I have to hear and feel the results...thans Nokia.
I use the N97 myself.  I got it because it has the Keyboad and I am a DJ and have tons of music that I like to carry with me.  After a couple of days of use and a couple of app installs..the phone became slow(er). Switching from landscape to portrait and back would cause the phone to stop and think for a second (or two).  The phone wants to go to landscape when some one call, this a very annoying and gets in the way.  I have almost 30 gb of music and phonos in the phone and I will say that digging through them is painful to say the least...why can the photos be place in folders in the gallery?  The nokia browser does the samething that the 5800 does with the shutting down problem.  The alarm clock is off by several minutes.  My phones randomly freezes for no apparent reason.
After searching the web I stumbled across this forum and started reading the many topic...wow I am not alone.  Many people are having the same issues and it looks like these issues have been around for some time.  Isn't this a Nokia forum?  Do they even read this forum?  How could these phone go through several updates and still have the same annoying problems?  All I can say is WOW. Before the is Phone I had a Blackberry and it too had its bugs when it came out but in subsequent updates the bugs went away.  I have heard the same for other smarthpones.  Being a first time Nokia user, this left a foul taste in my mouth.  I call the store to complain and they are willing to cut me a deal on any other phone they sell since my Nokia experience has been less than favorable.
Sorry for the long rant...I didn't come here to vent, I actually came for advice.  Before I go and return these phone and lay down even more money, please tell me that there is a light at the end of this tunnel.  You guys have more experience with Nokia's than I do and I am willing to listen to your advice in this matter...should I stay or should I leave?  HELP!!!

Okey, thanks. Nice to know!

Working great on my unbranded N97 and 5800 handsets (and as I'm in the UK they both have ancient firmware). It also works in my N900 Maemo handset

  • N97 v12 and 5800 v30 .. YAWN

You see, I have to say 'YAWN' because when I actually yawn, you don't get it do you Nokia..
Two phones. Both bought directly from Nokia "sim-free".. BOTH stuck on the old firmware.. how old is the 5800 v30 firmware now? 3 weeks old?
I'm hopefully getting my hands on a Sony Ericsson Satio in the next few days. A Symbian phone from another Vendor! Hopefully I'll see how a competitor to Nokia might've managed to have released a phone on the same platform that does not suck so unbelievably...
Get a move on with your mind numbingly convoluted release cycle with its secret change log and even more secret release dates..
Still no Mac support for the N97, ey... tut.. no chance you could add the USB Id's of the N97 to the existing Mac software so it would just work? I doubt very much it requires a code change and lets face it.. what's the worst it'd do.. break the phone and I'd need to *#7370* it? ooooooh.. not for the 85th time then?!
    grrrrrr

Just follow up.. I did play with a pre-release satio at the weekend and I have to say it's actually pretty nice!
The screen is much more shiny than the N97 sort of like comparing a matte and gloss laptop screen.
It feels a little bit snappier too.. I put this down to a lack of theme effects (which were disabled. The screen rotate with the theme options turned off was "atomic" rotate the phone and almost immediately the screen swapped.. no slow redraw or fade to black..
The home screen was obviously very different and geared towards the SE look and feel but the main menu app felt almost identical to the N97. To be fair, the phone felt a bit more like a 5800 than a N97.
Size wise it is very similar, thinner but that would be down to the N97 keyboard.. It is certainly larger than the 5800. No micro USB.. that's a bit odd.. perhaps it will change in the final release? I thought SE was in on the standardising connectors effort.
It had a google maps app, but not much else GPS wise.. This I think was down to the fact it was really pre-release..
The camera (12.1mp) was phenominal, but what do you expect.. The slide on the back does look a bit like a blister.. but it does an infinitely better job of protecting the camera.. the flash is xenon too.. and shares no flat plastic for that **bleep** bleed problem (maaan. that really irritates me on the N97!) It has extra hardware buttons too.. more than the camera and volume. Although they're geared towards media functions, I'm sure that could be helpful when trying to map functions (like missing pencil button, for example)
On the whole, I was actually really impressed. I loved playing with the R&D tools Neat for looking around the parts of the OS that are hidden. It didn't have a file manager app so I couldn't tell you how much free memory it has.. I've asked for a follow up on that (especially as my N97 is back under 10meg again .grrrrr)
Compared to the rather old 5800, I *think* I'd prefer the Satio.. however.. the N97 and its keyboard (albeit a keyboard without a damn control key!!! COPY AND PASTE DAMN IT!) still beats it on the hardware stakes.. (asides from the **bleep** keyboard cover does and the loose screen/vibrate does anyone dislike the N97 hardware?)
Software wise, it was really very stable! At no stage did it play the Nokia ring tone instead of the ring tone set in the profile
What was really great was seeing yet another Symbian phone.. Forgetting the PC software (which really isn't of much interest to mac user's anyway.. the mac user base is large.. considerable larger than say the N97 userbase! Nokia, stop ignoring or atleast update your mac software!) the phone is a really usable symbian phone. For the day to day, stock symbian stuff you'd hardly notice the difference.. I'm not sure Nokia or SE would be please about that fact, but as a Symbian fan.. I'm really pleased
The software on the phone suggest that some of the N97 bugs are Nokia bugs.. This is good because it puts the blame at Nokia's door.. by that I mean Symbian aren't to blame, its what Nokia do that's causing a problem..
As more and more Symbian handsets are released and if Nokia don't fix their attitude to testing this will become more and more apparently.. the good news for the Symbian fans out there is that you might now have a choice of vendors..

  • Nokia Ovi Suite and Nokia 5800 crashing after fw u...

When I start my Nokia Ovi Suite (V. 2.2.0.245) it works as usual, I can brows around my content without any problems. As soon as I connect my Nokia 5800 XM (RM-356 V. 51.0.006) it crashes. Worked just fine before I upgraded to the latest version on the phone.

    Troubleshooting so far:
    ===============================================================
Uninstall Ovi and re-download from Nokia web. Reinstalled Ovi Suite but that didn't work.
I then uninstalled all Ovi and all Nokia related software, cleaned Registry and reinstall Ovi Suite: Failed to fix.
Then I installed Nokia PC Suite 7.1.40.1 which worked just fine with 5800 XM (RM-356 V. 51.0.006). I had no problems making backups or to synchronize.
    ===============================================================
    How to solve this problem?

    LOL
I just tried Nokia Ovi Suite again to copy the full error report that it sends to Microsoft.... lo and behold it started to work again?????

This I did before I tried

Then I installed Nokia PC Suite 7.1.40.1 which worked just fine with 5800 XM (RM-356 V. 51.0.006). I had no problems making backups or to synchronize with Nokia PC Suite.
Made a complete backup on my phone.
Installed Nokia Software Updater and I reinstall the latest FW 51.0.006 to my phone.
Then I organized my content for a few minutes.
Shut down Nokia PC Suite and Nokia Software Updater.
    Started up Nokia Ovi Suite.
Connected my phone and clicked on PC-Suite on the options.
    It now works again????
Something happened when I installed PC Suite that enabled me to use my Nokia 5800 with Ovi Suite again.

  • Goodbye N97 and goodbye Nokia

Once the not so proud owner of not only 1 N97 but 2 of them I can now proudly say that I have sold them off to their less fortunate unsuspecting buyers.
It seemed like a real beauty. when I first started it up it looked like I had finally found the perfect phone. about 7 minutes after starting it up for the first time I was thinking about taking it back to the store and demand my money back. Then I heard about this fantastic new firmware that was about to be released so I decided to at least give the phone a chance.
After this my GPS antenna started acting up and the camera lens got scratched by the lens cover. I called the store to see if I could have the phone replaced. They said they only do replacements if you take it back within a week. They would be happy to send my phone in for repair. They could lend me a basic phone during the 2-3 weeks the repair would take. Only, I need to be able to connect to my Exchange server.
So, I ordered a new N97 from Nokia. It arrived a few days later. It had the same issues as the previous one. I had been screwed over once again. I sold off the first N97 for a reasonable amount of money to a poor sod. Earlier this week finally another fell for my ad on eBay and once I had the money in my account I sent the second phone off.
I can also tell you that the v20 firmware has still not been released for the Swedish version, product code 0588301.
So this is me telling you that I will never, ever pay for another Nokia smart phone in my life. I have my iPhone 3Gs and I am very, very pleased with it. To me, there are 3 manufacturers of smart phones that know what they are doing: Apple, Blackberry and HTC. Btw, anyone have an unlocked Blackberry Storm to sell?
    Former owner of E90, N97 x2, E72, N8 and current owner of E7.

Solution to this, BUY AN IPHONE
As i posted in the nokia obituary thread, i want it everywhere so everyone knows how much of a piece of **bleep** the phone is
I sadly was one of the foolish Who purchased an N97 at great expense, struggled with it for months on end, problem after problem. This was far from my first nokia I've had nokias ONLY since the mid to late 90's as they were the leaders. Key word WERE.
As I simply couldn't deal with the problems with the phone preventing me from doing simple tasks like making or receiving calls etc + the various other failings the N97 had + the time (days, weeks? Who knows) spent formatting, reloading, resetting and just trying to get the thing to work just crushed me.
Some say the N97 was released to early? Well to you I say it was far to late, if it was released "later" when it was more "ready" it would have been scrapped as there is no way it could even be thought it could compete with other handsets that will be on the market in say the next 6 months. Nokia were just not ready, the phone was not ready, they were behind the 8 ball and knew it, but instead decided to release a substandard product to burn all those loyal customers out there.
My solution ? Ebay, I sold the N97 at a great loss after the great expense of purchasing a "Flagship" phone 6 months prior.
What did I get you ask? Well I got an iphone of course.
Well that's a rubbish phone I hear you all say?! And the N97 "technically" with all its apparent and "advertised" features (never seen in the flesh & working) run rings around the N97 .. Sure you are right in theory. But you want to hear the crazy part?
IT WORKS, I bought it, activated it, imported my address book & contacts, made a few settings changes, got a few apps (I even paid for them, something id never do with the OVI store) I have EVERYTHING I want working fine without problem.
I then JB'd the phone to get it a little more "custom" to the way I want it.
That's it, its been a few weeks now with this thing and I haven't had to format it, restore it, hard reset, spend hours of my days trying to get it to work, wondering why I haven't got calls or sms's that are expected to find that its locked up (N97)
None of these things, like most people these days I don't have the time nor care for a product that wont be fixed to be all that it was promised it was, I don't have the time to waste trying to get it to work.
In short I no longer have time for nokia as they haven't got time for me.
As a "turning point" as such I also got rid of the Mrs. nokia phone (N95) and got her an iphone as I wish to not support nokia in any way.
And even more amusing when I "terminated" my OVI account a couple of weeks back I thought that would be the end of it, it said this will close all your nokia accounts Inc your discussions profile, but no even the OVI TERMINATE FUNCTION DOESNT WORK!!!! I STILL GET EMAIL UPDATES FROM NOKIA WITH NO WAY TO UNSUBSCRIBE !!!!! - Can't log in as my user details don't work to change subscription settings, and there is no OFF setting for subscriptions either.

  • N97 Issues - Nokia please read and address

    Hi All,
I am a massive Nokia Advocate and have been buying and using the latest Nokia since the 2110e back in 1996.
6 Weeks ago I purchased the 2 x n97s for my partner and I and I feel that Nokia has let its loyal customers down badly.
I can get over all the small software related issues but when a phone can not perform the fundamental day in day out tasks it is a serious problem.
Does anyone else have these same problems:
1 - Microphone is terrible when on speakerphone. Person on the other line strugggles to hear you.
2 - Phone does not always connect to bluetooth car kits. Both Nokia CK-7W and Honda Genuine Bluetooth.
3 - Phone reception is on average 2 bars lower than most other phones.
4 - Phone is slow and buggish compared to it's major competitors
5 - GPS (Nokia Maps 3.1) goes in and out of satellite lock every few minutes and often freezes, making it impossible to navigate.
6 - Nokia MMS take an extra ordinary time to send as compared with the n95.
There are more issues, but these are the main ones.
I understand most of these can and will be fixed with software updates, but it appears that some issues could very well be hardare related (eg microphone) and if this is the case Nokia has a real battle on their hands.
Please Nokia, get this right as soon as possible, before your loyal customers and advocates have no choice and are forced to desert you!

If you want Nokia to read this then you have to send it to Nokia. This is a public forum populated by other users like yourself.
Use the "Contact us" link in the navigation bar at the top of all forum pages.

  • Nokia 5800xm bugs and nokia contact error . To all...

Hi , am really having a bad time after being a nokia customer all my life, now since n70, that was very great, came to n81, good but bad camera, but it was fast, no bugs, n95 8gb, bugs, starting with wgz, apps which go empty when u hold menu button and take up alot of ram, now am using 5800 , utterly depressed. Alot of bugs, i'll mention all of them today and also what it lacks, 1. On all nokia phones, the im app has never worked, remove it in the next firmware update,2.the pulsating touch on 5800 level 1 is higher than level 2. 3. Add some type writting sound on the kb,4. Video playback reallh sucks!!! N it has a large screen, what for?5. Music player, that one whch is from n97, when launched, on all songs, scrolling then stopping takes you to the top again, the head set controls fail atimes, you cant fast forward a song. 6. When yiu turn on the phone on landscape, the full screen kboard disapears and the rotation is disabled completely.7. The browser has alotof bugs going in and out of full screen mode.8. And why dont we have good games? Ngage? Ngage 1. Was better than ngage2, and now you give us java games, utterly slow, i know that processor can run much better games, ngage 1 was 220mhz. Tha memory full error when i am jist running one app isnt amusing at all, and the camera, make the image mode same as video mode.... Do somethingm i feel like selling my phone right now, but i have faith u will listen to me, n hey, resistive touch screen can now do multitiouch, we need it. 10. The radio, when you rename a station, it takes forever to update on the flowing text, and also, how can n95 save 50 stations and 5800 20, what is xpress music? scanning for stations sometimes wraps around 1 station, i am sammy gimnyigei, using 5800xm, fw 50.0.5 i think, from kenya, please answer my plea and where can i give my suggestions on the new firmware, or just employ me on the firmware desk to tell you what everybody needs like new home screen, java needs a new interface, full screen with semi transparent keyboard, also ngage, i have tried contacting nokia for 3hours and i get an error on that page, the send button doesnt work. Please help me to forward this message to nokia people. Im tired and angry!!!

after buying a phone there is no customer care? I'll now migrate to iphone or x10. Nokia is a rip off!

  • Nokia Maps 3 - taken offline by Nokia for N97?

    Pretty interesting now...
    http://europe.nokia.com/explore-services/maps/download-maps
I can't find the N97 in there anymore.
    What happened?

The following statement was released RE: the removal of Maps 3.0 for N97:
The Ovi Maps 3.0 version for touch devices (Nokia N97) is temporarily not available via the Nokia Software Update and www.nokia.com/maps website as we are making adjustments to further improve the overall maps and navigation experience. We are certain that the application will be back in Nokia Software Update and www.nokia.com/maps website shortly where consumers can easily upgrade to the new version of Ovi Maps.
    Cheers

  • Software updates from Nokia are free and safe to i...

Neither can I update my wife's phone using the device, nor can I install Ovi without getting 2 errors reading like "cannot register codec blabla" and the phone is really slow, telling "got no memory" - however, there are 3.7MB on c: and 29GB on E:
I mean, I am into software development - but producing such a piece of **bleep** like Ovi Suite would make me be ashamed of my employers.
I have already changed to another mobile phone company from my 5800 - and I was a satsified Nokia customer for many years since 1993 - however, my wife likes her N97 and I need to get it running.
I do not expect to get any useful answer from your Indian support center, so may it be and my wife will be an Apple user these days.

if the phone C: memory has only 3.7mb it really is low memory.
try moving or uninstalling apps from the phone memory, and put them to E:.

  • N97 and Home Media

Anyone found where Home Media is in the N97 ? I'm need it to browse and access PC based media the way I did with my N95.  Thanks
    Nokia 808
    Nokia CK-200

Hi, unfortunately I don't believe it's possible, I am a current N97 and ex (and current) N95 8gig user. However, if you want a very useable compromise start a free Ovi Files account. I have one and can access up to 10 gig of files from my pc from anywhere any time on phone even when computer switched off. If I wnted to leave computer connected to web when I'm out I could access the lot !! It's worth a go, don't use it a lot , but if I occasionally need a photo or tune from my 'Anytime ' files it's handy to just download to my phone.
    Good Luck

  • N97 and N85 Camera mechanism malfunction from magn...

    Hello all,
I'm new here and the reason that registered is to tell to you about thing that i discovered yesterday.
So if you have N97 and use a pouch to carry it on your belt, you may be aware that in case the pouch
closed by the built-in magnets, the magnets will operate the camera mechanism even if the phone is locked.
As soon as i discovered it on my new Nokia N97, i picked up from my memory that my fiernd who owns
the Nokia N85, complaned in the past about unwanted front camera operation. We made the test on the N85
and found the same as on N97 - even when the phone is locked, the front camers starts operation from the
magnets proximity. And its the magnets in the standard cell-phone pouch. I bought my Nokia N97 few days
ago at the Orange provider store together with the pouch. My N97's locker side swich is already doesnt operate
well becase of the magnets of the pouch. Since the pouch was recomened by Orange and sold in the Orange
office, i asked today the Orange to exchange my N97 by new one.
The problem of the sensitivity to the magnets in pouch: the front camera operates and some times even records.
So the battery of the phone and memory are becoming empty much faster than expected.
So take care guys - buy only non-magnetic locking pouch!
    Best regards!

Guys, i've been told by Orange that they will replace my phone since te magnets of the pouch screwed up the sensors...

  • N97 and SAP V2 Bluetooth

    Hi
I have a Mercedes Benz E220 CDI with the COMAND systems and a SAP V2 Bluetooth cradle, which I currently use in conjunction with my Nokia N95
I am consiering buying the new N97 and want to know whether it is compatiable with the SAP V2?
    Can anyone help?

I can help. I have that running since yesterday when my new N97 came and it runs like magic. Not only is the pairing relatively easy but the remote access works wonderfully. Then you press 0000 / dial on the Car phone (MB Command in my case) and the phone book is transferred to the Merc including ALL !!! numbers that you have per contact. In other words no more multiple entries in your Outlook, just because the stupid Bluetooth in your car can't handle multiple numbers per contact. Hats off to the folks at Nokia. Nice Bluetooth SAP implementation.
The one thing you need to know is that the MB command takes a very long time for the initial pairing and phone book transfer. It takes for absolutely ever and while it is working on it it constantly gives you messages to the effect that 'no phone is detected' and 'no connection can be established' and "Sorry but you are a total loser" etc. when in fact everything is absolutely fine. This threw me the first time I did this. Once you have the pairing completed, just dial for zeros and hit dial and let it do its thing and give it 10 mins or so. Once you are set up, in the future you just get in the car and everything is automatic, as long as you have Bluetooth enabled on the phone.
However, it does not stop there. WHILE you have your N97 paired up in SIM ACCESS mode, you go to the N's music player, start your favourite music, select random play, switch on the FM transmitter on your phone and the thing will actually start transmitting your favourite music to your car radio in great quality. Now, THIS is all you ever wanted from a mobile comms system and never dared to ask, a clean car interior in terms of radiation, sweetened with some smooth music from your mobile phone and all with just one device. I got so carried away, that I actually fiddled on my car's command system in order to switch tracks on the N. Took a minute to realize I was listening to a Radio station called Nokia which was what appeared on the Radio's Display as the Broadcast Station's name ;-). Obviously I don't know about any other cars. Mine is a SL350 / 2007 with its standard MB command system.
I then figured that my radio actually supports WAP and also gives me access to my SMS text messages, including text or voice response option. Next thing I'll try is whether I can get a stock ticker or RSS feed of sorts pushed to my radio display via WAP. As you figure by now I am very happy with the N97. It is an expensive phone but if it holds up mechanically, I think I will be using this for a long time.

  • Nokia Music - N97

I have a similar problem, I have tryed /t5/forums/replypage/board-id/music/message-id/12425 but it didn't work.
I own a N97 and have been downloading music through the Nokia music store straight from my phone, I'm now experiencing problems.
My downloads are nowhere to be seen on my phone, I have looked and looked but no luck. When I go to the Nokia music store and hit the downloads button, I can see all my recent downloads, instead of the percentage they show them as "Downloaded", (This list previously cleared itself once a download was completed) I can play them from there or set them but nothing on my library and refreshing the library does nothing.
    Any help would be apreaciated.
    Thank you.

yes on the n97 it is on e/music
My  question is: where does nokia software put a database on my pc/windows xp a file to manage my music-files (i know where they are on my pc, I also know where itunes has its xml-file to database/manage the files).
How does Nokia Music this and where? on
    C:\programs\nokia?
I already see that -grrrr- nokia music will act on my music-files managed with itunes when I change something in nokia music. We have over 7.200 titles it was much work to have everything nice and clean no wish of nokia music messing the whole thing!
Nokia music hat no search function with letter, very heavy to browse through our files and I did not found any possibility to add new music files into nokia music.
    Where could I look for?
    Thanks

  • Nokia 1520 shortcomings and lack of proper support

I have been given a Nokia 1520 as a gift (after i had suggested i liked it). I have owned it for 3 weeks roughly and it's been a total saddening experience. Amongst the countless issues i am meeting are:
    - The infamous oversensitive display issue. Can't type any sms or email straigth without having multiple characters repeated over and over. This also means that while i try to scroll the screen i happen to open unwanted apps or unwanted links in the browser or in newsreaders. Also, trying to select a tile to resize/unpin it, it most often results in opening it countless times before i actually manage to unpin.
    - Lack of a keyboard allowing me to input Traditional Chinese with Pinyin (It was requested in 2011, ie 3 years ago).
    - Timed stroke writing for chinese characters means that if you are too slow (as most westerners writing chinese are) you can't even write characters (maximum timing is 0,8 secs).
    - Lack of any form of quick input like swiping or so. Multiple issues also at downloading languages for the keyboard. A nightmare.
    - The OS won't allow users to select single words or place the cursor in a specific position inside a word. This can be done in some places but not everywhere.
    - Bing Translator honestly sucks and there is a huge shortage of dictionaries and language related resources in the market (nothing comparable to Pleco or Hanping
    - Lack of a decent notification bar and a LED telling people they got mail or messages or calls when the phone is muted. This caused me to lose two important jobs.
    - Very poor/shaky reception for the phone and Internet. Where my Galaxy Note 2 works full broadband, the Nokia connection goes up and down or is none at all.
    - I took the device to Nokia Support Centre in Taipei and the person in charge was a kid who not only didn't know anything about the, now well known, issues of the device but he also got very arrogant, talking carelessly and with a very bad attitude and claiming "people shouldn't buy phones without being able to use them" and "if you tried it before why you complain now?". Tested the phone for 2 seconds and he decided it had no issues, so apparently no chances to have the phone sent for a repair/substitution.
Is this the path Nokia and Microsoft are taking with Windows Phone?
I am so disappointed that i am considering reselling the thing and going back from where i came from, IE Android.
It's a shame Nokia hasn't learned how to treat users yet. I am particularly disappointed at the defective device and at the attitude of the part time, lazy, sleepy teenagers they use in Taipei to cover the service making customers run (or worse since some of those guys really push your patience far above the limits, maybe they don't like foreigners or they are scared at speaking English, whatever it is, it's very uneasy and unpleasant). I have never seen such a bad service for a such a malfunctioning device in my life. I have owned maybe 20 or more devices to date (including old Windows Phones) and never had so many negative experiences piled up all together at the same time
I just wish i had been given a device with some other OS rather than a device with a Beta version of an OS supported by part time staff.

This would appear to be a genuine issue with the 1520. Do not have one so could not comment
    - Yes indeed i can grant you it's genuine. Haven't sent an email in the last 2 weeks. Just too frustrating.
I know there is several Chinese language settings but as I am not Chinese could not comment beyond this is not something Nokia could do anything about as it is a core OS issue and not a hardware/firmware one.
    - Well, it's easy to see if you have doubts. Enter: Settings-Keyboard and go search for any form of input that says "Traditional Chinese with Pinyin (PinYIn is the romanization of chinese characters. You type say "Wo" and the chinese character for "I" pops up amongst other choices. This has been existing from day 1 in any decent keyboard. It has been requested at MS suggestion board 3 years ago. Is still to be implemented. I find it hard to think how they can sell these phones here (especially considering the relations between China and Taiwan and the fact they use simplified/traditional respectively). It's not only a mad marketing move, it's also politically sensitive. No one normal does that here, believe me.
There's several swiping keyboard shortcuts such as typing special characters or numerals (tap hold the 123 key and swipe to the desired character)
    - Sure, then do one thing. Download any swiping keyboard on an Android device and then compare the speed at which you type and amend words. The WP keyboard is primitive. The fact you can't resize it combined with the screen oversensitiveness make it useless. Other Nokias are much much better, but you can't beat a real swipe keyboard, especially if you type as a profession. How can someone use such a keyboard on a device in 2014 is beyond me and and anyone else who has used an Android but even a Blackberry in old times. It's simply inefficient compared to anything else out there. Then we can argue on what we like or not but surely not on its lack of productivity compared to else (whatever else)
As long as the app does not use it's own code anywhere you want to enter text tap and hold to have the cursor appear and swipe to the location wanted.
    - Then do a test. Take an email sent by someone else. Then go to the portion of text he sent you in the REPLY mail you are writing and try to select one of the SENDER's words. You'll see it's impossible. Then move down and try to select a single word of your reply. You'll see it can be done. Different menus pop up based on where you are or which app you are.
Same is TEXT PREDICTION. It works in some places, doesn't in others, even when you'd need it
Never used it, as far as I heard especially since tha latest (recent) update this got a lot better)
You don't. Try to be a foreigner permanently based abroad and the usefulness of these tools (Dictionaries, translators, etc.) will appear immediately, especially when you have to handle or even study characters based on ideograms. Now, Android (Which i insist in saying i don't like due to their philosophy), offers not only a good mobile translating app (including a function where you take a picture then just scroll your finger on the words you want to be translated and translation pops up in a moment) but if you don't like it you can also find a wide choice of tools (Pleco and Hanping being among them and their developers having no intention to expand on WP for now and some not even in the future). In this perspective, what for you is useless or secondary, for people like me (and other expats who do business and work abroad) is a killer application. Google got it. Microsoft and Nokia, it seems, don't.
Never understood the obsession with a notification bar when your apps and services all give up constant updates and notifications on their tiles. I would not want a blinking light on my phone ever. If you are unable to check your phone even once an hour that is really not the phone or OS problem. Don't try and pin your own negligence on the phone that just makes you look silly.
Let's try to be constructive. This OS must not be built based on what you as Blog Admin like or don't like. It has to be built to cater for a wide range of users. Now, you don't like that led because apparently your tiles make you happy. I, don't spend all my day watching tiles. I work too so the phone goes in standby and since it's permanently muted (no ring, no vibration), LED is key to understand when i get emails or sms' or other notifications. I am not asking a multicolour LED as in Samsung devices (which allow you to assign a colour and vibration combination to different accounts so you understand based on colour and vibration what is important and what is not; but at least a basic primitve LED telling people "Hey you got mail or SMS". If it's not a LED, a screen notification waking up the phone from standby would to as well. As far as i know it's not present. It was present in many Android devices as both standard or third party app since the very first basic versions.
So you use a Note2 and 1520 at the same time? this may well have nothing to do with the phone and it won't be the first time it turns out a WiFi router is actually at fault.
So what do you do? Go to Starbucks and tell everyone to stop using the free Wi-Fi because your Nokia 1520 needs a dedicated connection and i threaten to suit Starbucks for not letting the King have the whole bandwidth for itself?
Galaxy works fine. Nokia doesn't, especially when broadband gets weaker (Taipei has Wi-Fi also on Metro wagons and any restaurant or other outlet you may think of). Core point is everyone is there reading their content on their mobiles. I am there trafficking with settings and **bleep**. Ended up using my Galaxy which works fine.
Those are not Nokia owned nor operated stores, go complain to them
Let me explain you a basic of marketing so you understand when it's not the case to defend a brand beyond reasonable limits even when you administer their blog.
If i, as a customer, enter a BLUE SHOP carrying a big, huge, NOKIA brand with all people wearing Nokia shirts i (and the other 23 million users who almost stopped to buy Nokia in Taiwan) assume whoever is running it, is running it on behalf of Nokia (Officially or unoficially doesn't matter as they get the license to sell from Nokia in any case). So, if your licensee works good, people are happy and buy more; if the staff shows signs of laziness, arrogance, treating adults without respect, showing ignorance on device's issues (They didn't even know about the global issue of oversensitiveness or about keyboards...the phone was an alien in their hands), people RUN. And i did RUN.
If you combine the bad support with the fact that the device is actually malfunctioning and lacks a lot of basic functions that in 2014 are given for granted, i beg to think that the only users left once they try the phone for one or two weeks will be some Fans of the brand and a few people who need it to watch movies and take pictures but you don't need a phablet for that. When you sell a bad device and have an as bad support that instead of solving the issue denies it you are turning the market in a self-help environment where users get angered (And you can see how many there are about Lumias and 1520 starting to get on top of the list). So, as much as you and I may stay argue in your blog, i think that if this issue is not solved this OS doesn't have much future.
Finally, a phablet is a sophisticated device where screen size, hardware and software package combine to offer a certain experience that ranges from entertainment to work IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT (Not in your garden, in your living room or when you show off the device to friends to let them see all those useless tiles which you can't even interact with as they open when you want to resize them etc. due to the bad screen). It means the device must be ready and functional in your country or in mine or wherever you live. In this case, Galaxy and their cheap plastic trash got it right with the Note family. Others like HTC and Nokia are lagging behind and 1520 in this respect is not helping people who want to jump from Android to Windows Phone to make that jump.
Test the device simulating the job a professional user doess (typing mails all the time, text messages, interacting with web content, copy/paste, translating and sharing data, sending data to other apps in a snap), then multiply that for 7 days a week and then experience the frustration accumulating day after day. In my case, this is further amplified by the fact that i come from a device that has spoilt me allowing me to do things in a snap.
This phone, as is, is no game!
