Nokia Lumia 1520 Overheating & Battery Drain after...

Hello,
I've been experiencing an intermintent problem with my Nokia Lumia 1520 (AT&T, 16GB model) where my phone overheats and the battery drains. The problem started after I upgraded to Windows Phone 8.1 and Lumia Cyan. As of now I haven't figured out a good step by step method to reproduce the problem on demand however I have noted that when this problem occurs and I wake the phone and unlock it the Start screen shows a never ending or unusually long "Loading" message and my phone will overheat and drain the battery. So far the only way to mitigate the problem is by shutting it down manually or performing a "soft" reboot of the phone. Afterwards the problem gets resolved and the phone resumes normal operations after rebooting with the phone returning to a normal temperature and battery drain rate that is consistent with the use it is being given.
Given that I don't know anyone else carrying a Lumia 1520 has anyone seen something similar to the problem I am describing on this post with their Lumia 1520 unit after updating to Windows Phone 8.1?
So far the only big resolution step I've taken is to perform a complete phone reset and not recovering the phone from my back ups, effectively making it a "new" phone in terms of settings and software conditions.
My theory for this problem is that it is software driven as an overheated phone and a stuck "Loading" message instead of the Start screen after unlocking the phone indicates that a software process (either OS or separate Application) may be behind the issue.
Thanks for any assistance on this matter!

Did not work unfortunately... But I have resolved my overheating and battery drain issue...
CORTANA is the culprit and needs to be unpinned from the start screen.
Here is the process if CORTANA is piined already..
1) Unpin CORTANA
2) Go to "Settings.. Applications and open Cortana
3) Turn off Cortana
4) Phone will RESET
5) Go to "Settings.. Applications and open Cortana
6) Turn on CORTANA
DO NOT PIN TO START SCREEN
7) Swipe your start screen over to your applications
8) select CORTANA and allow it to set it self up again.
Now CORTANA is still accessible by the Search icon or from your application menu.
Now your battery.. Before the update my battery was reading "1 day, 14+ hours"
After update After recharge I was getting 14 hours then it would start draining.
After taking CORTANA off the start screen my phone stop getting hot near the camera (Upper left) and after 2 days (Battery cycling) my battery has returned back to reading "1 day, 14+ hours"
My assumption - The matter will be resolved with the Lumia Denim update coming later this qtr.
When that arrives my understanding is CORTANA is off BETA in US. Some additional Firmware tweaking, along with the camera updates and more.. Which "SHOULD" resolve this battery drain & over heating with CORTANA
Per my experience, I believe you're right that Cortana is the culprit for the problem described by the original poster. I unpinned Cortana from my start screen 6 days ago, and so far so good. I have not had a recurrence of that problem. I did not turn Cortana off and then back on again though. I just unpinned it, and that seems to have done the trick.
I'm also hopeful the Windows Phone 8.1.1 and Lumia Denim update will fix this since Cortana will be off Beta in the U.S.

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 OVERHEATED Symptoms and Died Afte...

My new phone Nokia Lumia 1520 is beautiful and it works great.  I like its big 6" screen and everything else it was designed to do.
However, for first two months of using this new phone, it started showing overheating problem.  I remember overheating occurred at least 4-5 times in last two month period.  Last time overheat issue got really worst yesterday.  It was not hot enough to burn your skin but It got to the point of intolerable.  Overheat happens when my phone was heavily in use: frequent calls, texting, and internet usage, and other apps running in background like Microsoft OneDrive Cloud.  I talk many times over 15 and 30 minutes long on the phone, and the phone heats up.  When it overheated, I stopped using the phone and let it cooled.  It cooled off after it has a little rest.  The battery was always good; it runs almost of the entire day and only needs recharge at end of day.
Then until yesterday, I turned on the feature "Internet Hotspot Sharing" in Settings for very first time to get my laptop online.  I worked on my laptop for several hours.  When I got home last night, Nokia Lumia 1020 was completely knocked out.  It went blank and unresponsive.  I left it charging the entire night.  This morning, it didn’t even turn on or off.  It was just a dark screen, dead weight.
Today I am going to take it back to AT&T service store and have it checked out.  I went online today and found this overheat discussion going on, and so here I post my facts to share with everyone.
Usage in 2 month period (60 days):
Phone calls: 1,503 times,  25.1 calls per day
Phone call length at least 60 minutes: 1 time
Phone call length at least 30 minutes: 17 times
Phone call length at least 15 minutes: 66 times
    Total minutes used: 5,271 minutes
Total Picture/Video /Text/Data Used: 735 times, 24.5 messages per day
    Data used: 168 times
    Text used: 476 times
Picture & Video Used: 91 times
Total data used: 3,695 MB or 3.6 GB

Looking at the statistic of many people reporting overheat problems with the phone.  Does that tell you something?  I think Nokia is aware of their inferior product.  Nokia needs to improve their product quality or risk of losing customers like me.  I'm one of many reports about overheat problem.  This is not an issolated issue; it's commonly reported from users like me regarding this phone.
I will be happy to show you proof of my transaction with AT&T.  I can post it here for everyone to see.  I bet if you go to Nokia assembling facility, you would probably see tons of returned overheat phones.  Research it yourself rather than speculating.  Your thought is irrelevant to the overheat issue experiencing by users.
The replacement phone I received from AT&T seems to be working fine now.  It's working ok.  Overheat issue has disappeared from the replacement phone.  I will post my comment again if overheat issue repeats.  Technology we using today is just a temporary for a better invention and idea tomorrow.  Remember we have progressed from a little pager device clipped to your waiste 20 years ago to smartphone screen today?
There's no such thing as perfect on this planet earth, ranging from birth defects to space shuttle disasters Challenger & Columbia.  All we can do is to learn, improve, and keep on moving toward Type 1 Civilization.  We can never reach a perfect point, our universe is forever expanding.

  • Nokia Lumia 920 potential battery drain issue?

Can you Nokia confirm this? http://reach.jdbpocketware.com/topic/128305-to-nokia-ref-lumia-920/
    The issue illustrated in detail:
    Nature of Windows Phone buttons
Pressing either the power button or the camera button will cause the device screen to turn on, even when the proximity sensor detects proximity.
    The lockscreen behavior
Upon power on, screen lights up and shows the lockscreen (or camera), which runs a timeout to auto power off the device if screen is not touched in X seconds.
But if screen is touched, the timeout counter is restarted, so continuous touching could lead into a loop, the "death loop" which won't let the device to power off (standby) and will consume battery life.
    New touchscreen technology
The Nokia Lumia 920 comes with a touchscreen that reacts to touch from pretty much any material such as metal or clothes. This can be dangerous.
    So here is a theory
When the phone is inside a pocket or bag it can be touched by other objects. These objects can press buttons and can touch/rub the screen. This will initiate the "death loop" for who knows how much time, could be minutes or hours, depends on how active the user is since body movement will produce friction between objects/clothes and touchscreen:
The "death loop" will drain battery and battery is precious.
    Solution?
Should be simple: screen must not power on if the proximity sensor detects proximity. Current version of Windows Phone does not take care of this. The big question is: will Windows Phone 8 take care of this? Is the Lumia 920 a potential battery drainer?

I don't understand why we have to spend our valuable time in the forums for days and nights to FIND HOW TO FIX THAT CRAB!! NOKIA company did not handout these devices FOR CHARITY.All of us had paid around a thousand dollars to buy this Phone. They have got to work overtime to fix it and publish a solution otherwise recall the devices back.

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 overheating

i have 1520 and it overheats, but after usage of any app after 5 min top up corner is going insane heated
Moderator's note: We amended the subject so other users can easily identify and answer the concern.

Hello, brooklands. Is this for a Lumia 1520 as well? Smartphones like Lumia devices may get warm when multitasking, charging, or using heavy performance apps. However, it should quickly cool off. There are systems in place to restrict power consumption to essential features if the phone does become excessively hot. Since the issue only happen when using certain apps, have you tried isolating the case through several troubleshooting steps? If those apps are downloaded ones, have you tried removing them and see if it'll help?
If you still believe that the phone is too hot, you might want to consult a Care Point where it can be checked to see if there is a genuine cause for concern. Find one in your area by clicking here: http://www.microsoft.com/en/mobile/support/locations/.
For the screen issue, try doing the steps shown here and see if it'll help improve the phone's performance: FAQ - My Lumia touch screen is not responding or is responding the wrong way. The info given in this link can be used for queries globally.
Let us know how it will go.

  • Heavy Battery Drain after updating to 8.1 Lumia Cy...

After updating my Lumia 1520 to 8.1 Cyan update, the battery drain is very high. The battery is lasting only for 6 to 7 hours when the data traffic is on  (under  mixed use of 2G and 3G modes). I have noticed few other users were also experiencing heavy battery drain after the Cyan update.
Will there be an update to fix this battery drain issue?
When the phone was in WP 8 Lumia Black update, battery backup was around 24-30 hrs (when data traffic was on).
What will be the workaround for this?

    Solved!

Yep, my 1520 battery drains like a helicopter that's lost it's rotor after this 8.1 update.
I was just boasting last weekend how awesome the battery life was on this phone, I drove 300mi with the GPS w/navigation, did some tethering to my laptop for work, went overnight..no charging, used lightly all the next day, few pictures, email, browsing, phone calls, and drove 300mi back on GPS/navigation and I still had 38% battery left.
I updated to 8.1 sunday night, and on my normal commute to a customer in another state, which under 8.0 would have drained oh...mabey 4-5%, I was at 62% by the time I got to this customer yesteday.
All I did was make a phone call, that's it. All background stuff is not allowed. location off, cortana off, ...still drains.
Bad bad bad news. I'm not seeing much usefull ness out of 8.1, and considering the battery life and no real new features....just gimmicks if you ask me, I'm not sure I want to stay at 8.1 . I'm trying to give it a chance...battery life is still better than my POS samsung androids I've had in the past, but knowing how good it really can be...and no real features in 8.1 (I was hopeing they'd fix the imap email not allowed to map sent/trash/inbox issue)....eshh...what a mess it seems.

  • My Nokia Lumia 1520 has a plethora of issues

This is mainly about my Nokia Lumia 1520, but also some other Nokia Lumia phones.
After I inherited my Nokia Lumia 1520 I had to wait a few weeks before I could install Windows Phone 8.1 (Blue) + Nokia Lumia Cyan on it, after doing so I signed in with my Microsoft-account (as it was of a deceased family member before, and I was using his Microsoft-account, so I had to factory reset it), after resetting it I noticed a plethora of issues that weren't present in Windows Phone 8, no offence to anyone at Microsoft, but Windows Phone 8 had absolutely 0 bugs I ever experienced, no crashes, no oddities, ever since the new operating system was released all my phones as well as my ex-girlfriend's and my girlfriend's phones have been experiencing issues, but none more than my Nokia Lumia 1520, here is a summation of each phone. Note that I am a huge Windows Phone fanboy, so I have purchased several devices for multiple people, and I'll write what they've told me down here too. Note that most are either Nokia Lumia or Microsoft Lumia, but one is by the Cantonese manufacturer, Huawei so I don't know if that will be considered (ir)relevant by the moderators.
    Nokia Lumia 1520:
    * Sometimes the touch-screen randomly doesn't respond (which is really annoying while playing Age of Empires: Castle Siege where I lost the chance to get several British banners due to this error), this recovers sometimes by going stand-by, but this alternates and seems completely random when the screen gets responsive again, and when not.
    * It randomly starts pressing physical buttons, and when I try to press them it's not recognized by the phone, and there is no way to turn my phone off or even put it in stand-by while it's doing this.
    * There is no back-up for settings and app data, it did this before but for some reason it does notify me that I haven't backed up in a while and any attempt to back it up is met with countless of errors, before my phone backs up my data again I don't want to factory reset it because I don't want important data to get lost, so please help me fix this.
    * It sometimes starts crashing random applications with provocation.
    * Sometimes it won't charge.
    * It crashes randomly while playing videos on Google YouTube and other websites.
    * It can't download Lumia Help + Tips.
    * Sometimes the screen goes all black, and the camera stops to work, but here is the odd part, whenever I click on the back-button and hold it it shows me the ''open'' applications, but they all remain black.
    * Half of the time when I take pictures with it there is a 3 second delay, and most of the time those pictures aren't saved, so I only use it to take screenshots, and maybe 1 in every 10 screenshot is actually saved.
    * It won't show the profile pictures of my Microsoft Skype-contacts.
    * The calendar doesn't work on the lock-screen, and shows me the wrong information all the time.'
    * Cortana randomly starts in the middle of other things.
    * Internet Explorer Mobile randomly crashes and closes the tab I'm on at that moment.
    * Internet Explorer Mobile randomly opens tabs I didn't ask for.
    Nokia Lumia 920:
    * The phone sometimes won't restart after going completely off unless one would hard reset it.
    * There is no back-up for settings and app data, it did this before but for some reason it does notify me that I haven't backed up in a while and any attempt to back it up is met with countless of errors, before my phone backs up my data again I don't want to factory reset it because I don't want important data to get lost, so please help me fix this. (note for my Nokia Lumia 920 this happened after I returned from Hanoi, the issue has been constant on my Nokia Lumia 1520 even while it was in Europe)
    * Microsoft Skype crashes when I want to upload a picture or drawing (unique to this specific phone, it works seamless on all the other devices).
    * Microsoft Cortana often notifies me about news, but can't fetch anything when I click on the message in the Action Centre.
    * It can't download Lumia Help + Tips.
    * On some (Vietnamese) Wi-Fi connections it can't update nor download several applications regardless of size (for example an Angry Birds game called Angry Birds Go! that is nearly 1 G.B. nor an 8 M.B. N.O.R.A.D. Santa Tracker).
    * When there is a flippable protective case around it the cellular network will crash, and can only be restored after rebooting it, before I got S.I.M. errors on it nearly 5 times a day, each time it required me to restart my phone.
    * It permanently shows 2 unread mails in Microsoft Outlook and 8 in Google Mail for no reason, I have 0 mails in Yahoo! Mail but it does tell me that I have ''unread'' ones in several (NON-EXISTING) folders.
    * The Calendar doesn't appear on the lock-screen, and if it does it's either several weeks too late, or shows me messages for months about things that happened last year.
    * Sometimes one ear-plug goes without sound, rather than being a hardware problem it gets fixed by rebooting the phone.
    * Sometimes I can't copy or paste anything.
    * Internet Explorer Mobile often doesn't recognize images I want to save, while somehow it does recognize those same images either the day before and/or the next time.
    Nokia Lumia 520:
    * The phone sometimes won't restart after going completely off unless one would hard reset it.
    * It doesn't recognize the Micro-S.D. card it did before (it worked while on Lumia Cyan).
    * It can't download Lumia Help + Tips.
    * It sometimes won't charge.
    Nokia Lumia 530 Dual S.I.M.:
    * After inserting a Micro-S.D. card it can't download in-app videos (Microsoft Skype) or voice messages (WhatsApp-Messenger) or even links (Facebook Messenger).
    * It can't download Lumia Help + Tips.
    * Sometimes it doesn't recognize the 2nd S.I.M. Card.
    * Like before, the Calendar doesn't function on the lock-screen.
    Microsoft Lumia 353:
    * Touch related issues similar to the Nokia Lumia 1520 as expressed above.
    Huawei Ascend W1:
    * The phone will detect low storage even when there is lots of free space.
Unrelated to these phones, but still ''Nokia'' hardware is the Nokia charger that comes with Nokia Lumia phones for some reason doesn't work, I mean like ever, and Microsoft forces me to buy new chargers, plus I still use the charger I had on my old H.T.C. Windows Phone for my Nokia Lumia 920. All the above phones have many more issues, but I just simply can't remember them right now.

Confirm that Date / Time settings are correct.

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 upgraded to Windows Phone 8.1 G.D...

    Hello reader(S),
Today I accepted the Fast Ring (which was the only offered ring) programme on my Nokia Lumia 1520 to install the latest preview builds of Windows 10 and provide feedback for Microsoft... but here's the odd part, it installed Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2/G.D.R. 2 and doesn't show anything even remotely related to Windows 10, whenever I go back to the Windows Insider Hub it tells me that it'll reboot my device, then it shows me everything that's new in Windows Phone 8.1 (Blue) - with Nokia Lumia Cyan, and then doesn't change anything. It had an oddity in the ''migrating your data'' portion of the update where it went, and then I'd literally watch the bar roll back, where it went, and then I'd literally watch the bar roll back, where it went, and then I'd literally watch the bar roll back, where it went, and then I'd literally watch the bar roll back, where it went, and then I'd literally watch the bar roll back, OVER and OVER again, after a while the update was done rolling out and since my Nokia Lumia 1520 is already a rubbish phone that constantly crashes and is so inusable for anyone without the patience of a Shaolin Monk that I can't give it away as a gift (I intend to give it to my sister eventually...), now I bought a Microsoft Lumia 532 mobile telephone last week, but after reading that some ''cheaper'' mobile telephones have trouble with Windows 10's technical preview I ought to install it on my Nokia Lumia 1520 which severely lacks in every respect, is a bug-fest and I wouldn't mind it getting "bricked".
¿So how can I install the Windows 10 preview? Note that I don't have a developer's account and did not download it via the Windows Phone Developer Preview Hub, I installed it over Windows (Phone) Update and did it exactly as other Windows Insiders previously have.
    Sincerely,
    Tula, the Quang

I also forgot to mention that I indeed have tried to roll into the Fast Ring programme again with no avail.

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 not finding Bluetooth headsets

    Hello
I have a nokia Lumia 1520 and it won't connect to the two bluetooth headsets I have. They are not even showing up to connect to.
I tried with a Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Headset (bluetooth version 3.0) and a Sony MBH10 (bluetooth version 1.2). Can you give me a list of compatible bluetooth headsets and/or what version of bluetooth I need for it to be to work with my lumia 1520? My phone is updated with the latest updates and I also tried to connect via bluetooth to my other phone a Nokia E6 and it did connect succesfully.

The devices you are trying to connect to the phone have to be in the bluetooth pairing mode before the phone will see them in bluetooth.
Read up on how to put the headsets in pairing mode.  Should be in the literature that came with them.

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 having problems with Voyager Lege...

I recently purchased Nokia Lumia 1520 and I am having some problems with Plantronics Voyager Legend. Before 1520 I was using HTC Radar 4G with Plantronics Voyager Legend and I don't have any problems. The problems that I am having are, when I am on a call using the Plantronics Voyager Legend the voice of the person will automatically switched between Plantronics Voyager Legend and 1520 through out the entire conversation back and forth. It does read all my text messages without any problems. Another problem is on my HTC Radar 4G once I turn on the Bluetooth under setting Bluetooth stays on even after I reboots the phone. On 1520 after rebooting the phone Bluetooth is off automatically by the Windows 8. Why does it do that? Are there any workaround or fixes for my issues

My Voyager Legend firmware is up to date.  This Voyager Legend works with all my others electronics without any problems.  Problem with Nokia Lumia 1520 only.  I think the problem is 1520 Windows 8 OS.  I am waiting on Plantronics to contact me but looks like I am at the bottom of the list.  Does anyone know why after rebooting the 1520, Nokia Windows 8 OS automatically turn the Bluetooth off in setting, under Bluetooth everytime?

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 - Screen Brightness Problem

I  have two Nokia Lumia 1520.
Both of them have the same problem. I will explain the problem to you in detail and before that let me assure you I am a Windows Phone long time user , have been part of the development , developed several apps for the platform and I have used Lumia 800 , 720 , 920 , 925 and now 1520. So I am well aware of all the settings , sunlight readability , automatic brightness etc. This problem is not due to any of these , I can assure you
    Now the problem ,
I set the automatic brightness option OFF
I move the brightness to HIGH
    Then I lock the phone
When I unlock the phone , the brightness drops by 10% suddenly without any intervention
This problem happens sometime. Some days I see this problem , some days I don't and there are few days where I see this problem very heavily.
I purchased another 1520 and it has the same problem. I am very sure , from my experience that this is a firm ware issue. This is NOT a hardware problem , but a serious problem from your software end. It is prudent that Nokia recognizes this problem and finds a solution to this. Interestingly , I am not the only one who is facing this problem , the whole globe is facing the same problem and for such a pricey phone , this is a frustrating experience - very frustrating. I am sending some links , which will show the problems users are facing:

I have Nokia Lumia 1520 Black.
I have also been facing the same problem with screen brightness.
The problem occurs only when the Brightness is in Automatic mode.
--> When the Brightness is set to Automatic mode & take out from dark location to bright location the display turns out to weird grey color.
--> And then if the brightness is set to low, medium or high display comes to normal.
Is this issue related to the hardware or software.
If it is related to the Software will you be able to fix it ? or else How about the replacing with the new one ?

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 progressively worse

After receiving Lumia Denim on my Nokia Lumia 1520 the irritating issues I received on my Nokia Lumia 1520 during Lumia Cyan became worse, and I can't factory reset it as the back up function doesn't work and I don't want to lose my valuable data. The most common issues is that the screen starts randomly ''pressing'' on a non-existing button on the lower left corner of the screen, and it would randomly ''press'' the back and/or search button.
On my Nokia Lumia 920 I also had back up problems, but they were fixed with Lumia Denim, despite the ''back-up'er'' telling me that every attempt at a back up failed, so when I recently bought a new Nokia Lumia 930 it was a pleasant surprise that ALL my data (except for alarms, and Cortana reminders) was synchronised, but now my Nokia Lumia 930 has THE SAME back up problems as my Nokia Lumia 1520 and my Nokia Lumia 920... the odd part is that my American cousin who has a Microsoft Lumia 535 has the same problems, as does my Chinese girlfriend who has a Samsung ATIV SE, this seems to be a recurring problem in Windows Phone...

Because I am just an end-user like you and I do not have your hardware combination here, I can only give general advice. Could be a new interoperability issue between these two devices, introduced with Lumia Cyan. Could be a old wrong pair-key. Or could be interfering between your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (Bluetooth Adaptive Channel Hopping). Therefore, let us start with the Bluetooth part:
on the Nokia Lumia 1520, Settings » Wi-Fi » Off (to avoid any interference)
on the Nokia Lumia 1520, Settings » Bluetooth » On
(status: paired) tap and hold your Jabra CLIPPER » delete (if paired already)
on the Jabra CLIPPER, press and hold the multi-function button until the indicator light is solid blue (approximately 6 seconds) to activate the paring mode
Your Bluetooth headset should appear in your phone now. After you tapped on it, it should be paired successfully. Does it?
If not, start over again and between step 1 and 2, power off both Jabra CLIPPER and Nokia Lumia 1520.
If it still does not work, start over and between step 1 and 2, please hold volume down + power until the Nokia Lumia 1520 turns off (soft reboot; do not forget to set your date/time afterwards).
If it still does not work, start over and between step 1 and 2, turn off your Wi-Fi access point.
    Does it work now?

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 out-of-the-box problem

I just got the Nokia Lumia 1520 from Germany and I took it out of the box all good and pretty, but when then I go and charge it since it didn't turn on at first (I have this british charger and a european adapter) and put it in the phone. I left it for a while to charge since the windows start button started flashing and now when I turn it on, it shows the Nokia start screen, then it shows that it's charging and then there comes a blue screen that flashes and it vibrates after that. Again the Nokia start screen shows and the blue screen flashes again, vibrates and Nokia screen again and so it goes endlessly!
I have never gotten it to start it just flashes the blue screen and turns off again

    WHAT DO I DO HELP!

Sounds to me like the charger you are using is not powerful enough. Are you using the charger that came with the phone? You mentioned adaptors etc so thought you may be charging with another charger. You could also try charging with high output usb chargers, typically ones for tablets.
