Nokia M86 8MP - Messaging & Mass Storage Woes

All,
I have an N86 and in the; "Message Settings > Other > Memory in Use" I have E: Mass Memory Selected as there is more storage space available.
However;
1) The phone seems to be alot slower at writing and reading messages whilst the messages are stored on the mass storage.
2) Every now and again, if I connect via USB to copy something to Mass Storage, it seems to take over connectivity to the Mass Storage, then when I go into messaging, it tells me that Mass Storage couldn't be contacted and going into the settings again, it has defaulted back to "Chone Memory" (It occasionally does this also after using an App that has been installed onto theMass Storage.
Any Advice ??
Cheers,
Scott

when you connect in Mass Storage mode you are in effect disconnecting the mass memory from the rest of the phone so that the PC has exclusive use. You shouldn't use anything on the phone while in mass storage mode.
Unless you are a message freak then there is no reason why you shouldn't use C drive for message store.

  • Hardware Test Error Message - Mass Storage Error code ata 1/6/8 HD: 2,0

I have an imac 15" flat Panel, 700 MHz . after getting the flashing question mark, running or trying to run all the standard tests, (pram, Software Restore, disk repair, reinstall, kernel repairs) I never see the hard drive or volume. I saw it was a maxtor HD with 0 bytes at one point.
I now ran the Apple Hardware Test think I lost the Hard Drive...this is the feed back:
    Airport- Passed
    Logic Board - Passed
    Mass Storage - Error Detected
Memory - Has Not been Run yet
    Modem - Device Found
Video RAM - Has not been run yet
Error Code ata 1/6/8 HD: 2,0
Could anyone help me diagnose the issue? I think I can replace the HArd Drive myself, if I knew this was the problem and what I need to buy to replace.
    Thanks,

I have a different take to a brody having replaced my hard disk and opened my iMac G4 up several times. Many people find that Apple Authorized Service Providers tend to give extortionate quotes for such repairs. Feel free to get a quote yourself. I'll provide the same advice I've given to many many other Apple Discussions users who have successfully replaced their hard disk themselves.
The iMac uses a standard desktop PC hard drive. It is 3.5" wide and in the iMac G4 uses the IDE connection. The iMac 700MHz 15" has an ATA66 bus so can use ATA66, ATA100 or ATA133 drives but not ATA33 or SATA. You should buy a 7,200rpm drive with a cache of 8Mb or higher as this also increases the speed over the original 5,400rpm drive installed so you should get a performance increase.
Here is a list of suitable hard drives.
It's pretty fiddly to work inside an iMac G4 so you must be very cautious. Always take anti-static precautions. Here are three options for guiding you through the procedure:
    MacWorld
    xlr8yourmac
    Service Manuals
I've also taken a fair few photos which you can find here.
I'd advise reading the reports on the xlr8yourmac's drive database so get other people's experiences first.
You must replace the Thermal Paste when you close the iMac up or it will overheat.
It's probably worth replacing the PRAM Battery whilst you're in there as these have a finite life (once they fail to re-charge you may start to run in to snags - it's only a $5 part).
The hard disk should be set to Master (link).
Some iMac G4 700MHz users have reported that they are unable to address hard drives larger that 128GB, there is an application called SpeedTools that can be used to overcome this addressing limitation.
You might also give consideration to installing a 512MB PC133 DIMM or an 18x DVD±RW Dual Layer burner whilst you do this update; both of which will have to be removed during the process.
You must be very careful around the video connector in the iMac; it really is very fragile. In fact there is no need to touch it at all in my experience.
It is possible that the ATA controller on the iMac's logic board has failed rather than the hard disk. Given the cost of the logic-board it would not be cost-effective for an iMac G4 700MHz.
Let us know how you get on.

  • Does the Nokia 6680 support USB mass storage class...

I am new to this phone and I am trying to figure it out...
    Thanks.

It doesn't. You can see the phone contents from a PC through Nokia PC Suite, however:

  • Nokia C5-03 and Mac OSX Lion - Problems copying files to phone in Mass Storage mode

Whenever I try to load more than one file from my iMac (early 2008, OSX Lion 10.7.2) to my new Nokia C5-03 in Mass Storage mode —since the files are MP3s and Multimedia Transfer doesn’t seem to work at all, I keep on getting asked which transfer mode I want to activate for several times, I always choose Mass Storage, and then the first file starts copying, but when it ends with the first one I have to wait for ±30s only to get asked the same again and again until the second file starts copying, and so on.
It’s driving me crazy, I’ve tried setting in the USB connectivity options not to ask me for the mode when I connect the phone, but it doesn’t work either. It still goes very slow and a lot of “USB Mass Storage transfer mode activated” messages appear.
I’ve tested it with a friend’s C5-03 and it’s still the same, but when connecting them to a Windows computer everything goes great and fast. Has somebody had this problem before? Is there a solution to this? I don’t know if this is the correct board to post this, sorry if it’s not.
    Thanks in advance.
PS: Sorry if there are any mistakes or my English sounds weird, i’m Spanish.

    Hi,
Can you try the suggestions below?
-Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel (called Programs
and Features in Microsoft Windows 7).
Select Nokia Ovi Suite in the list of applications and click
    Change/Remove.
In the dialog that appears, choose Repair.
    - Click Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver and repair
-Try creating the connection between your phone and computer
totally from scratch. Start by disconnecting your phone. In
Nokia Ovi Suite, select Tools > Options > My devices. Select
your phone at the top of the window and click Remove this
    device.
Then, select Tools > Add new device, and follow the
    instructions to reconnect the phone.
If this doesn't solve the problem,
-Uninstall the following programs withAdd/Remove Programs in
Control Panel (called Programs and Features in Microsoft
    Windows 7):
    Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver
    Nokia Ovi Suite
    PC Connectivity Solution
Then, download and install the latest version of Nokia Ovi
    I hope this helps.

  • Nokia N95 - unable to activate mass storage mode

I'm having trouble with my Nokia N95 8Gb and mass storage mode.
WWhen I can eventually activate this mode after shutting down apps (just intellisync and location tracker), it usually lasts no more than 90s before the phone reboots itself.
This makes copying music rather difficult since
    - The music apps on pcsuite/nseries pcsuite are useless and crash on any attempt to sync (Vista x64)
    - Nokia music doesn't see the phone
    - file copy in pcsync is slow
    - USB mass storage mode doesn't work (ie for using iTunes sync)
    I'm on the v20 software.
    Any ideas?
I love my N95 8Gb -- but this is why people but iPhones/iPods... it's just too hard.

Thanks for the hint. However I'd rather not do this just yet. I'd prefer to figure out which app is in error.
So Q: Can one retrieve the cause of a phone crashing/rebooting? Is there a "system dump" ????.........
Point taken, but more often than not it's the O/S itself that is causing a problem, hence the need to perform the reset. And I don't think there is a core dump anywhere that you can examine. Even if there was, would it mean anything to you? You don't know what system variables are where (there won't be any debug symbols) and I'd challenge you to reverse engineer the system stack (if you knew where it was) in order to find the point in execution where the failure occurs.
This is, of course, assuming it is a software problem. If the problem persists after a reset and, optionally, a firmware reinstall, then it could well be a hardware problem that a Nokia Care Point should take a look at.

  • N97 Mini Move message folder to Mass Storage

Ok, I'd like to get this right for once and for all. I'm challenging the Move message to Mass storage feature. These are the steps:
    0) I have two message in my Inbox, Remove and replace the battery and switch on the device. After that I format E:Mass Storage and close File manager
    1) In Messaging Options I select Settings and than Other and change the Memory in user to E:Mass Storage
    2) I'm asked if I'd like to "copy all messages to the new message memory". I click on "Yes"
    3) I'm asked if I'd like to "Save original messages" and I click "No" as I'd like to use the new stoage exclusively
After that the Inbox is empty.

    Hi Guys.
    My problem is slightly different.
    I have a Nokia N97 Mini
The other day i was trying to speed up my phone, so i did the following:
    1. Entered menu
    2. Selected option for: Settings
    3. Selected option forhone
    4. Selected option for:Application Sett.
    5. Selected option for:Messaging
    6. Selected option forther
    7. Set memory in use from: C: Phone memory to E: Mass Memory
At the time it asked me if i wanted to copy my messages or if i wanted to move them, so i moved the,.
Then i realised the phone messaging feature got even slower so decided to move them back and go back to original settings.
So went through the procedure again and did reverse of step 7 above.
But this time it didnt ask me to move or copy the messages.
I have gone into PC Suite, and backed up my messages whilst having the settings to E: Mass memory in step 7, then restoring back onto the phone with C: Phome memory in step 7.
    This didnt work either.
    Any ideas?

  • Annoying messages bug when using mass storage to s...

As you all well know the c: drive on n97 is quite small. I have about +2000 messages on my phone and I use the 32gb mass storage to store all of my emails and sms's.
It works ok untill I connect my phone to pc using mass storage mode. The first thing it does is it says e: drive unavailable - using c: to store messages. Ok - that makes sense BUT the darn thing doesn't switch back to using e: drive when I unplug it from the computer. Instead I have to switch it back to e: manually (from sms settings and email settings). It's also impossible to move messages that I have received while using mass storage mode to the drive e:
I really hope that nokia does sth about this matter. It's the single most annoying bug that this phone has.

To answer a few questions here...
The way the mass memory is broadcast to the computer when connected in PC Suite mode is called "OBEX". It's a kind of file transfer protocol. When it's connected in "mass storage" mode it uses an industry standard usb-storage protocol exactly like pen drives, external hard drives, external CD/DVD drives etc.
The difference between the two is that in mass storage mode, the phone relinquishes control of the storage space and hands it over to the host computer. That way, the computer sees everything on that device and it also happens to be compatible with more or less every operating system under the sun. In PC Suite mode, the phone retains control of the storage space and decides what to let the computer "see". Directories that are crucial to the phone's operation, such as "private" and "system", are not shown to the computer. Added to that, the computer needs specific drivers to be able to use the OBEX protocol, and this excludes non-mainstream operating systems.
As for being able or unable to transfer messages from one area to the other, the reason is fairly simple. Messages are stored in their own directory inside the "private" directory. If, for example, there's no such directory set up on E: when you want to choose that drive for storing messages, the phone considers that it has never been used for this and therefore asks you if you want to copy your messages from C: to E: so that they're still available to you once you switch over. If, OTOH, there is already a trace of E: having been used for storing messages (ie. if the messaging directory inside E:\Private does exist) then the phone considers that you might not want to clobber what's already there and doesn't offer to replace them with what's on C:.

  • Mass Storage Error Message

I have an 8gb msd card in the 8320, mass storage is ON, but when I access the phone through the Roxio media manager, it hgives the message "Please Activate the Mass Stoge Mode on your Device". Have tried it on and off, nothing. I can see the phones memory storage. There are photos from the camera stored on the card, which I can see from the phone. Also I can't see the phone through the XP explorer.
All other sync functions seem to work.

what do you expect from a Media manager ? I don't use any and can transfer my music to my device in just a few seconds.
About the Roxio Media Manager quality, I think many people have trouble with it indeed.

Remove the memory card and use a card reader to check if it works fine. If not, then you might have to reformat the memory card.
If the above fails, you may need to do a full reset on your phone either by performing a factory reset or by using the Nokia Software Recovery Tool.

  • Nokia 701 mass storage option hang

    hi..
Whenever i connect my nokia 701 with my computer and choose mass storage option it hang very badly...
How can i solve this probalam....??
Moderator's notes: Moved to it's own thread

    Dear Kr_gabani,
    Welcome to the Nokia forums!
Could you please try perform a soft reset using the code *#7780# security code 12345 if prompted, this will not delete any data however it will restore your settings to how they where when brand new.
Please try and replug the device and if it still does not work please go into your computers control panel > devices > uninstall the phone drivers.
After you have uninstalled the phone drivers please replug your phone and let the drivers reinstall themselves.
Hopefully this solves your issues with entering mass storage mode. If the issue persists, please dont hesitate to let me know!

  • Media Sync Error - enable mass storage manually message repeats

I have a blackberry 8310 with an extra memory card installed.
Every time I try to use Blackberry Media Sync I get an error message that reads: The connected Blackberry device required mass media storage mode to be enabled manually, please do so from your device and click Retry.
However when I have enabled mass media mode manually and clicked retry, it gives me the exact same message, or sometimes sits there saying connecting to Blackberry device indefinitely.
I have checked for updates both for my desktop software (version 5.0.1) and my Media Sync software (Version 2.0.0.27) all other software is working normally, and I can move music to my device with media manager (which I only tried after receiving the error message about 20 times).
    Any suggestions?

Hi and welcome to the forums!
Have you used this media card in a different Blackberry and used media sync
with it? Please read the link on the bottom of the post about Media Sync.
DId you format it in the Blackberry when you received it?
On solely your Blackberry, can you store a picture and retrieve it?
Go to options>memory and set the following options:
Use the following settings in the memory option of the device:
    Compressions enabled
    Media card support ON
Media transfer protocol ON (Storm and Bold only)
    Mass storage support ON
Auto enable Mass storage support when connected ON
Save all changes. Now back out of the memory section and go to security>encryption> DISABLE.
Do a battery pull as listed below and let us know how it goes.

I don't remember the details but have read on this forum that in different modes of connection the device nomenclature changes.. Also in some cases rather than showing ' contains nothing' even if there is a lot of empty space it showed as FULL...
Keeping aside this issue, do you have any functionality problem if you use the Suite mode for connection ? If not then just ignore this.. as there are lots of issues related to OVI Suite and this may be one of them...

  • Mass storage message

what does it mean when it asks me "do you want to enable mass storage". What is mass storage and what does it do?

Mass storage mode allows you to use your BB as a 'jump' drive when connected to your PC.  That is, when you connect to your PC, and it asks, and you enable it, you can go into Windows Explorer and see the files on the BB media card.  You can easily move files back and forth btwn PC and BB this way.
