Nokia N8 & PR1.2 experience

Applied the PR1.2 last week on my Nokia N8 (not carrier-locked having PR1.1
The upgrade was smooth and in this one week I noticed following improvements ..
1) Minor postive impact on battery life
2) Mail syncronisation really works well now
3) The FM transmitter power seems to have been improved.
No issues so far.
Anyone find anything else better (or worse) with applying PR1.2 ?

don´t think anybody from nokia will say anything about that, some say that a new firmvare is testing right now and will be out at least when the E7 hit the stores since that phone will have the new firmvare installed...and that phone is to be released in December..

  • Nokia update PR1.1 - Nokia N8

    Hi guys!

    Thanks for the info.

    Cheers jrrsteve
bluegnu, I totally agree that it's not an ideal situation but it's what we've got at the moment and others aren't much better.
I too am excited about this upcoming update and the year in general but too many people have a habit of turning excitement into bitterness when things don't happen exactly when they expect them to (or as they expect).
What a lot of people don't understand is that Nokia is still in the process of taking full control of symbian after the foundation ended in a mess. As the year goes on we should see more updates, more features, more quickly and possibly more news coming directly out of Nokia. Hopefully things will continue to change for the better as the year goes on.
Remain positive, take rumours with a pinch of salt and most of all enjoy your phone as it is treating any updates as bonuses. That's always worked for me

  • Official Nokia N8 PR1.1/PR1.2 Software Release Sch...

The helpful guys at Nokia Care have created a handy PR1.1 Software Update release schedule for the Nokia N8. This list will be updated regularly with release timings for different countries and variants. So, if you’re not sure about the availability for your phone, just take a look at the list.
We are also working on the same kind of list for the Nokia C7, which will be posted in a separate thread.
    Moderator note:
Subject changed to reflect addition of PR1.2into the data

    Status: 13th April 2011
The release schedule for N8 PR1.1 is attached as an Excel file.
To check the Software Update availability for your phone, please first search for your country and then have a look for your specific productcode. (Your productcode information can be found by typing *#0000# on your N8.)
Status "Published" means that the software update is available for download
via your N8 (use Menu > Applications > SW Update > tick N8-00 Device Update and then follow the on screen prompts) or
via PC (connect your phone via USB and use OviSuite).
If you need more instructions just post here and we'll assist you.
Status "In creation" means your version is currently with our software teams. We can't give a specific day here, but you can switch on the automatic software update check in your phone (via Menu > Applications > SW Update > Options > Settings > Auto-check for updates) and your N8 will prompt you as soon as the new software is available. There may be unforeseen delays for some products if any issues should be discovered in pre-release testing.

  • Nokia N8 Customer's experience [Pros, Cons, and Ti...

I am a Fan and Nokia user since the release of Nokia 3310, then Nokia N37, then Nokia 5230, and now Nokia N8. when I see the history of improvements that Nokia did achieve so far I feel glad to be a Nokia fan and user, and when I look for the future I hope for more and more.
I got my N8 almost 6 days ago; this phone is extremely powerful cellphone, it really in a level to compete with iphone. I was lucky to have mine as a second batch, and it does not have any problem so far , only it restarted once and hanged once and this was due to the over limit multi-tasking which I did in purpose to test the ability of the phone and to know experimentally the limit of the processor.
This is my experience summary about my N8:
    Pros*:
1- Simbian^3 is a very powerful improvement to Nokia’s history, it is really fast. The processor is working fast even with such a good operating system.
2- Multi home screens and widgets are very powerful feature.
3- Contacts list had improved very well.
4- Messaging and Social networks had improved very much.
5- Photos and Videos editor had received a very excellent improvement.
6- Web browser is very fast in the second batch (Same speed as Opera 10).
7- The music player was improved very much (since the N73).
8- The GPS was improved, and connects quickly to satellite.
9- The ability to assign different themes to each profile mode is a very cool feature.
10- The screen visibility and quality is very good even under direct sunlight.
11- Sound quality is very good (however if it had 2 speakers like my N73, it would be a good addition).
12- The ability to use USB keys is very powerful, and I really enjoyed using this feature.
13- USB charging is very good, I wish Nokia standardize it in all its new phones.
14- HDMI connection is a very extent addition, especially when you do have a BT mouse and keyboard with the HDTV home theatre one, as if you are using your laptop.
15- Gaming experience is very good, especially if you connect it to TV with the HDMI.
16- OVI store offers a good pack of apps, hopefully it will expand in the near future.
    Cons*:
1- Simbian^3 is little bit sophisticated.
2- No customized equalizer in the music player (I don’t like the Nokia standard equalizer sets).
3- The FM transmitter does not support the GPS voice guidance, only music player.
4- The WiFi widget has some problems to turn off the WiFi (It is not a one step process; I wish Nokia fix it quickly).
5- When watching a movie, the menu key does not dim or turn off, I should hide it with my hand.
6- Only 3 home screens (I wish it has n number of customizable home screens).
7- Keyboard is very retarded in the vertical mood (multi letter for each key is not likely to exist with touch screens, they should replace it with a full keyboard mood even with the number rows).
8- Keyboard is very tight in the horizontal mood (Also it is confusing for the people who used to use S60^5th ed touch) [I wish if the numbers are displayed in the top as a fourth row, as my language (Arabic with English letters) has numbers as equivalent missingletters in the English alphabet, so it is painful to such back and forth between number mood and letter mood].
9- Only the Nokia default languages are the only set of languages for the phone (I hope one day, Nokia allow customers to select their suitable language packs, as the screen is touch and Nokia will not need to customize a set of letters on numerical pads as in N73).
10- The camera is 2x zoom only (I wish that extended zoom could be applied to boost it up to 6x with the 3 mp resolution as it was in the N73 when selecting less resolution option we get more zoom). Also there is no way to silent the camera sound nor the red light of the capture, my Samsung digital camera has it. Also no sequence picture support.
11- The display resolution is poor; more pixels would make it better. I know that a higher resolution means a faster processor, means a much powerful battery.
12- Battery life is not enough (One day with high usage. ie. music & GPS all the day + some Wifi).
13- 16 gb is not enough specially with apps that can reach over 100mb in the near future.
14- The speaker position on the back cover is not good, when the phone is on the table, the sound is blocked.
15- The plastic covers of the top and bottom is a big disadvantage (it could break for sure if it felt on its tip), as it would be better if it was aluminum and leave the top black part only plastic for the antenna functionality, or merge the antenna in the casing body as in the iphone.
All in all, this phone is a good step from Nokia in its learning and improving experience, I would like Nokia to learn from the costumer’s experience, and listen to their suggestions and requests for improvements. Nokia is Nokia I know, but learning from “others” will save Nokia time and money to improve and to be creative in adding new ideas instead of being just in the average area. I believe that Nokia will take back the lead in the cellphones creativity as it was with the announcement of the first N-series device 4 years ago.
*Future Pros and Cons will be added as I get more experience with N8

You are very lucky you don't care about email. For those of us who want to make Blackberry users jealous, the N8 experience is a humiliation.
If you call your prejudices standards, please lower them.

So in various forums & Nokia official news, it appears that after upgrade to the new firmware i.e. PR1.1, I should also be able to edit applications with Quick Office, but that does not seem to be the case (it keeps asking for License). Community Manager's note:
    Corporate identity details removed,

I'm generally disappointed with the user experience and functionality offered by Symbian Anna on the E6 too. It's ok but nothing to shout about at all, especially considering that it is supposed to be the current pinnacle of Nokia's offerings in the smartphone market.
The last Symbian/S60 phone I had was the Nokia 3230 about six years ago and apart from the very obvious cosmetic changes as far as I can tell there have been few other leaps forward.
This perception can often be down to the little things, the numerous little functions, user choices and options that an operating system could have.
Silly things like I can't choose which folder the camera saves pictures to. My two year old 6700C running Series 40 lets you do that, Anna doesn't. Come on catch up!
Oh and when you enter the directory in which images are saved, Series 40 gives you a little thumbnail preview in the listing. That's a bit too much for Anna.
The Anna media player doesn't even equal the functionality of that on the 6700C. Some might say the E6 isn't a  "music" phone but then neither was the 6700C and it's two years old now. Come on Anna, catch up again!
Anna will not let you directly access the folder in which the stock ringtones are located. So you can't delete the unwated ones or add new ones to it to keep them all in one place. Guess what? Series 40 on the old 6700C lets you do that.
... and don't even get me started on the disorganised unintuitive mess of the photo viewer application.
I'm now thinking that Anna is just a cosmetic facelift to Symbian to bridge the gap between now and when the Windows 7 Mobile devices are released. In places, Anna doesn't even compare well against Nokia's own feature phone OS.

  • Official Nokia C7 PR1.1 Release Schedule

As with N8, we now have the C7 Release Schedule available for you. This list will be updated regularly with release timings for different countries and variants. So, if you’re not sure about the availability for your phone, just take a look at the list.
    Status: 13th April 2011
The release schedule for C7 PR1.1 is attached as an Excel file.
To check the Software Update availability for your phone, please first search for your country and then have a look for your specific productcode. (Your productcode information can be found by typing *#0000# on your C7.)
Status "Published" means that the software update is available for download
via your C7 (use Menu > Applications > Tools > SW Update > tick C7-00 Device Update and then follow the on screen prompts) or

    C7 PR1 1 & PR1.2 status (130411).xls ‏70 KB

Ok, I'll answer one by one:
    - Week07 is the calendar week, meaning it will be released this week when it's listed as "in creation"
    - Product codes that are missing in the excel sheet are not with our software team yet - this is mostly due to us waiting for approvals from operators, who want to test the software first
    - Creating this list is manual work & we therefore can only do that for N8 & C7. At the moment I can't give any information about other products & software releases. If you activate the autocheck in your phone, it will automatically tell you when a new software is available.
    - There are separate software update packages created for PC-update and in device-update - so it could be that one of those packages is available faster than the other.

  • All quiet on the N8 PR1.1 update front - Nokia fai...

Whilst the vast majority of N8s around the world have received this update there seem to be a large number which are "stuck in the system".
In a separate thread ( /t5/Software-Updates/Official-Nokia-N8-PR1-1-Software-Release-Schedule/td-p/923407) Nokia were providing a regularly updated spreadsheet of when the update would be available by phone variant. That's not been updated since the 24th February.
Whilst I can accept that the release date may not be in Nokia's control, I feel they've shot themselves in the foot by starting out with good comms then letting it drop. In the thread we were promised that the update would be available within 5 days of the dates in the spreadsheet but with those dates being nearly 3 weeks past many of us are still waiting with no (promised) forthcoming information - and no update.
Shame - Nokia seemed to be doing well.

NOBODY HAS A CLUE WHAT IS GOING ON AT NOKIA!!!!
I have rang Nokia customer service, I have rang Vodafone customer service. Neither of them have a clue what PR1.1 is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NOKIA!!! This whole PR1.1 **bleep** is one of the main reasons why I am SERIOUSLY considering jumping ship. I WANT MY UPDATE NOW.
Nokia Care contact centre staff are only able to help you to know what is the latest version of software for your particular device's product code, they will not be able to tell you when an update will become available - update schedules for Nokia devices, like those for most other major phone manufacturers, are not currently published in advance.
If your device is a Vodafone variant (ie: it has the Vodafone-customised version of the software), then Nokia will only be able to offer the update to you when it receives the approval from Vodafone. Approval for operator-variant software updates is a process undertaken at commercial level between Nokia and the operator concerned, just as Nokia Care staff cannot provide you with advanced scheduling, I doubt that the customer support staff of your operator will have information regarding update schedules for any devices that they offer.
Software updates are phased in due to the wide range of regional, national and network variants. Nobody questions the frustration of customers whose device is not yet able to receive an update that is already available to others, but this is regrettably unavoidable - particularly in the case of operator-variant models.

3 Transfer the downloaded file to your phone in the standard way."
Well the only way I know how to put ANYTHING on there is ZOON and ZOON DOES NOT HAVE AN OPTION IN IT FOR EBOOKS THAT I CAN SEE.
How is "IN THE STANDARD WAY" supposed to be of any use or help to me whatsoever when STANDARD WAY FOR EBOOKS IS NOT EVIDENT TO ME???

  • Social 1.3 causes Nokia N8 phone to crash/hang/fre...

    Problem Description:
Unable to load certain Facebook messages using the Social 1.3 App. When opening a certain messages, "loading message" appears with a progress animation. The message does not complete to load, even waiting 5 minutes. When the app is exited, a few minutes later the phone will not respond or is very slow to respond. I'm unable to determine which facebook messages won't load, but seems the larger the message or has links, then the message does not load.
Able to reproduce the issue using a different phone with no 3rd party applications installed with the exception of Latest Ovi Maps, Angry Birds, Fring, Nimbuzz and Nokia Bubble Lock. Also tried loading the message via wifi and 3G and is still able to reproduce the issue using either of the two.
    Configuration:
    Nokia N8 PR1.1
    Social 1.3
    Nokia BubbleLock
    Steps to Reproduce
    1. Using a Nokia N8 with the above configuration, launch Social v1.3.
    2. Log in to Facebook.
    3. Navigate to Messages.
    4. Open a Large Facebook message with links. (Message May not load)
    5. Click Back and Exit Social App.
    6. Wait a few seconds.
    Expected Results:
Social FaceBook Message loads correctly with no adverse effects.
    Actual Results:
Social  Facebook Message does not load, when the app is exited, the entire OS/Phone will hang or crash.
    Workaround:
Hold power button for 5-10 seconds to shutdown the device.
