  • Nokia N85 - New User Impressions

    Hello all,
Let me start by explaining just why I am writing this. My main hope is that someone from Nokia reads this, and really takes these suggestions to heart. My phone really is brilliant, and I am extremely satisfied, however there are some areas where it can be improved. My goal with this review is to help and offer suggestions, not to whine. Secondly, if any negative impressions I have are due to my own errors, I would like to be corrected.
Also, let me say a little bit about myself, to get a clear picture of how I use the phone. I am a relatively average 20-something. I have an hour long commute each day on public transportation, and although I don't have a car, intend to use the GPS for future motorcycle tours. Having one device that combines the functionality of my camera, iPod, video recorder, and GPS unit was highly desirable. My previous phone was a sony ericsson Z600, so this phone is a generational leap above my previous, and what I would consider my first "smart phone"
The listing below is ordered in what I feel to be impact. This is a combination of two factors: how common the annoyance is, and how severe it is (ie. something that is slightly annoying on an every-day application will be roughly equal to a terribly done rarely used application)
    Experience:
    - It seems there is a bit of mis-allocation of resources going on.... As a user, having one single large source of applications to download would tremendously increase the usability of my phone. Instead, I see things like "Vine" being made, which have very limited use in the daily lives of customers. I realize there is the n-series website, the download application, and a slew of 3rd party websites... but no single official source that has everything (or at least everything good).
    Podcasting:
    - I think podcasting is currently the weakest application. For me, this is a disappointment, as I use it daily. I think the main problem comes down to a philosophical one: Nokia does not appear to know exactly what podcasts are. They are treated like something they aren't: just another mp3 file. Podcasts aren't simply songs that you can listen to multiple times, starting over and enjoy each time... they are more akin to a saved radio program. To that extent, when you pause one, it should remember where that particular file was paused, and begin at that location the next time the file is opened... not at the beginning. The iPod does this very nicely.
    - The integration between the music player and podcasting application is strained. In reality, they should be merged. They conflict over resources in odd ways: I was listening to a podcast, took a call, then hit play... only to have some random mp3 from the music player start, instead of the podcast I was listening to.
    - I love that podcasts can be downloaded directly to my phone. I've currently set it up to check for new podcasts at 4:30am every day, so I have a fresh batch for the day. However, if for whatever reason I do a manual update when I get home, it resets my update schedule. My reoccurring updates should happen everyday at the time I set, and not be effected by manual updates.
    Profiles:
    - Profiles seems somewhat unclear as to what it effects. By this, I mean that each profile has a series of preferences within the profiles application that will change and are bound to each profile. That is clear enough... but then, changing profiles also changes my preferences for certain other applications... such as bluetooth. This would make sense if profiles was some sort of universal settings exchange framework... but at this point, I'm not sure exactly which applications/settings change with a profile, and which not. It would be quite cool to make it possible to have all apps change.
    - Probably should come with an "Airplane mode" as a lot of people seem to ask about this.
    Adobe PDF
    - The zoom keys are not used, but should be.
That's all I can think of after about 5 days of using this phone, perhaps I'll stop by with more later. Hope this was useful

Ah yes, I knew I would forget some things....
    GPS:
    - I do like seeing the satellite data, such as can be seen in the GPS data application. Why not have an easy way to get to this application, or at least the satellite information, from Nokia Maps.
    Hardware:
    - Perhaps this is to be expected from a slider, but there is just a very slight amount of play between the face and body of device. Enough that I can feel a small contact, and a little give, when pressing the call buttons. Nothing too bad, but such a feeling makes it seem less "solid" and makes me worry it will get worse over time. Probably it won't, as this isn't the first slider they've ever made, so it's probably just a consequence of having movable parts.

  • New firmware for nokia N85

Hello. I would like if you were lazy people from Nokia have made a new firmware for Nokia N85.
It is a shame that for some older models released new firmware. But even so it is only a few cell models of Nokia's touch-type screen.
Shame on Nokia. Wake up in the centrale and start finally doing something for people.

  • Help please problem with nokia n85

    hi guys
after updating the nokia n85 to v30.019
the speaker icon of the music folder disspeard in the menu
and even the icon of utilities folder disspeard
how can i restore the icons
i've tried the hard reset and it didn't work ?!
    waiting for your help guys

do a back up and reinstall firmware without memory card in your phone. right after the update use code #2 from the list below.
     1. *#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default ( you will not lose any data)
Make sure you back up your data as you will lose all of it when you perform option 2 or 3 on this list. The default code for ALL operations listed here is 12345
    2. *#7370# - Reformat your phone (out of the box, tho keep in mind that most newer nokia phones at least n series, e series and s60 based phones have udp - user data preservation so not ALL data may be lost. still it is a good idea to always do a back up of your stuff.)
    3. This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working. If the phone is not showing any activity, proceed with hard formatting , turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button. (the default code is 12345)
hard reset - hold the following buttons *, 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. once you feel the phone power up you can let go off the power button while still holding all three buttons ( for Nokia 5800XM - use the following buttons to do a hard reset, GREEN/RED/CAMERA keys pressed all at once on power up. this will only work on 5800's that have firmware version 20... and up. ) For Nokia N97 (unofficial version but works) is SHIFT /SPACE BAR / BACKSPACE while holding the power button. Again do not let go until you see the handshake screen.
If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service for assistance.

  • Nokia n85 stolen

Hi, My nokia n85 was stolen from 2days ago and i have t mobile as my provider. I was wondering what happens when they switch sim cards and use up all the attempts on the pin code because i have a pin code set up when different sims are used. Is there anyway that person can unlock the phone once the attempts are used up? thank you

Hi, sorry to hear about that! The PIN code can be usually typed for a maximum of 3 times, if after those 3 tries you don't get it right, the SIM card will lock itself, and you'll need the PUK of the SIM card. The PUK practically cannot be guessed, it appears only somewhere in your contract, and you're virtually the only person which can have/find it. However, if the SIM card is locked by a PIN code, it doesn't mean that the phone gets also locked. The one who have stolen it could just throw the SIM away and insert another one, and the phone will work just fine. The phone cannot be used only if you have set a lock code on it, if there is such a code only on the SIM card, unfortunately the phone will not be locked.
Shortly said, it depends on your settings:
If you've set your phone to ask for the SIM card's PIN code everytime there's a new SIM in it, they'll just type in their PIN code, and they will be able to use it.
If you've set up your phone to ask for an unlock code (that has nothing to do with the SIM PIN code), then the phone will lock itself and it cannot be used. Unfortunately there are tools and programs that can fully reset the phone's settings, even if the phone is password locked, and there is a chance that they will do that.
Do you know your phone's IMEI? If so, you can send it to your GSM provider, there are chances that they can trace the phone when it will be turned on. Also, you can give it to the police, so if they'll find it, you can prove that is yours.

  • Nokia N85

my new Nokia n85 cannot start up..it shows its charging when off but cannot start up normally..it starts up and then goes off even before i input my pin or it stays on for a few seconds

Haven't you already asked similar questions several times before? People have replied to you so no need to start yet another topic.
What YOU need to do is read some reviews:

It's pointless asking here if a model is any good as support forums are usually negatively biased.

I don't know where the chipset has been manufactured (or who actually made the chips), but there's no reason to believe it'd be overclocked (rather, the usual thing to do to preserve battery life is to run the processors at lower clock speeds than what the hardware is really capable of).
In addition, there's no practical way to replace individual chips on phone circuit boards. You'd need the whole board replaced.

  • Nokia N85 16GB micro SD Support?

Can someone comfirm in the MicroSD card of 16gb capacity work on the new Nokia n85?
    Thanks

yes it should work with no problems. n85 comes in a box with a 8gb card. in theory n85 should be able to support cards for up to 32gb tho, these do not yet exist.

  • Is this nokia n85 major firmware update?

    hi guys
The new firmware v111.007 for Nokia N85 RM-335 is now available via FOTA and will be added soon on Nokia Software Updater (NSU). Do get the new update it as it fixes bugs/errors.
    The following product codes are eligible for the v111.007 update;
    0581657: N85 CMCC CC PRD
    copied from symbian master;;;
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

yeh appears so that it may be for the China variant. i would take information on symbian-master with a grain of salt anyway.
If you found this or someone's comments helpful or like what that person has to say, please give some Kudos to their post!

  • GPS on Nokia N85 in English

I'm currently living in Israel and have a Nokia N85 which has GPS in Hebrew. Can anybody tell me how I get GPS in English. It is possible because I have had it in the past but can't work it out now. I have to drive alone to Jerusalem tomorrow and need to know before then if possible.

Do you mean the Voice Guidance or the actual text? For the text, you need to set your phone language to English. For voice guidance, go to Maps>Settings (the wrench/spanner icon)>Navigation>Drive/Walk Navigation>Select English
