Nokia N900 Rebooting after droping it...

hello i have accidentally  dropped my nokia n900 on the floor from about 1 meter high. The battery didn't come out but the back cover was removed and the phone turned off...
i then turned it on, the nokia logo appeared and then a black screen then the phone rebooted and it kept rebooting about 17 times then it gave me System Malfunction. System shutdown in 10 secs.
I removed the battery and the sim card and i still got this problem...
then when i came home i tried the R&D mode but it didnt fix the phone it kept rebooting even in the R&D mode...
so what do you think is this a software problem or a hardware problem?
i sent it to nokia today they told me to wait about 3 days to check if it is a software problem...
please tell me what you think the problem is as i am worried !
Thank you

ooooh.. I'm way off this evening..
It could be anything..
Remember, the N900 has two flash units.. the first is small and very fast (256meg) which contains the core OS..
The other is like an SD card and is 32gig and contains part of the OS
Some users reported their devices failed and couldn't see the 32gig storage.. this causes all sorts of problems, failure to boot has been seen, failure to reflash is another.. general flakieness..
If any of the components has failed, it might stop the device booting..
The OS is remarkably intolerant of hardware failures.. but since there are practically no serviceable parts in the device it doesn't seem to matter..
Point is, it is very unlikely to be a software fault.. I detest the test centers attitude..
"It could be a software fault"
then flash the device.. if it can't be flashed, its a hardware fault.. Infact no repair center would look at a modified, used OS.. A phone that has been messed with is very likely to have software problems.. what did the user do? delete some vital system file?!
But still...
if it can be flashed and STILL doesn't work, then the software is stock and it is essentially fresh-out-of-the-box meaning it has to be a hardware failure otherwise there is a flaw in the OS that could affect any brand new fresh device..
it should be a 2 minute job to diagnose as "hardware"
Point is, R&D mode does sometimes allow a faulty phone to boot and give you a chance to find out which hardware is playing up.. but if it still isn't booting I'd be hearing "my hardware is duff"

Any advice on how I can get my N900 up and running again or should I send it in for replacement or repair?

Have a look at this thread.. many people in your situation have been helped out there.. any questions, post them in there and I'll try and help..
    /discussions/board/message?message.uid=593949#U593949
If your device hasn't booted, it won't charge.. if it isn't charged, you almost certainly can't fix it.. the easiest solution is to find someone with a N900, X6, 5800 or 5230 handset and use theirs to charge your battery..
To fix your device (and get it booting, not to stop it rebooting) you can try:
    remove battery
plug into USB cable and computer..
    wait until screen lights up..
    put battery back in..
This *might* get it booting again.. if so, you need to leave it on charge for as long as possible..
The reason your device is rebooting is a firmware bug that has been fixed...
the reason your device stops booting after 17 reboots is a firmware bug that has been fixed..
So, you need to upgrade your firmware (without it rebooting)
Have a look at site on your phone when it boots
    http://chris.intrepid.cx/N900/fix
If you get your device booting, follow the instructions there. That temporary fix may make your device stable enough to upgrade to the latest firmware.. then you can disable the temporary fix and enjoy your device with no more  reboot problems..
Any questions, post in that thread I'll try my best to help out

  • Brand new Nokia N900 ceases just after half a day ...

I recieved the new Nokia N900 as an upgrade. It crashed few time opening emails, however restarted automatically. Later on it crashed on ovi map (pre installed). I tried rebooting after taking the taking the battery out and putting it back in - no joy! I tried startgin without the sim card -still the same problem - it starts with the Nokia banner and then 5 flashing dots... that's it.
I have used Nokia for over 10 years, I never experienced this from Nokia.
I think N900 is still 'Work in Progress', am not sure if it is fully tested yet!!

This is a known problem.. And I'll be brief here since there are lots of posts about it..
A bug in the firmware causes some devices to reboot.. Your's is an unluck one.. There is a permanent fix in an up and coming firmware release (not the one released today.. but soon) but in the mean time we have a work around..
you have two problems.. first getting your device booting..
Each time your device randomly rebooted itself, it increased a counter.. when this counter reached its upper limit (17 reboots) the device will STOP booting.. as yours has.. To reset this limit you need to manually restart your phone.. use the power button to turn it off.. use the power button to turn it on and the counter goes back to zero..
problem is, your device has already reached the limit so we need to trick it into going back to zero..
The easiest option may not work for you.. but it is fairly simple..
Take the battery out.. plug your phone into your computer.. put the battery back in.. allow the phone to boot..
If that doesn't work, you'll need to use the longer process detailed in the link above.. Read the first post carefully and see the section:
REPAIRING A DEVICE THAT NO LONGER BOOTS
If your device won't boot and won't respond to flasher.. the battery could be flat.. you MUST charge the battery to get your device booting. To do this you'll need to find someone with a Nokia N900, 5800 or 5230 handset since they all use the same battery.. If you device won't boot, it won't charge..
Ok, assuming these instructions have helped your device boot, you need to implement the patch to stop it rebooting..
Open this URL in your phone
    http://chris.intrepid.cx/N900/fix
Click and INSTALL the first link.. when you click the first link select open..you'll be taken to app manager and you must proceed with the install
Go back to the browser and click and SAVE the second link.. Save the file in the documents folder of your device..
now, open an Xterminal and type these two commands exactly.. remember they are case sensative:
    sudo gainroot
    sh MyDocs/.documents/fixpm.sh enable
Reboot your device once more and you should hopefully have a happy N900!
Any problems refer to the first link in this post... and post and questions in that thread..

I tried flashing and downloaded "Flasher", "WinFlasher_3.12.1.exe", since I've windows 7 in 32 bit operating system.
It opens properly, but after i give first command "flasher-3.5.exe -F pr1.2.bin -f". It shows prompt command and says nothing about detecting, as lot of post refers to.
Please someone help me on this.

First, Thanks a lot for replying.
Second, I'm not very familiar with linux. I followed the instructions posted by ceroberts75 as sticky at the first page.
    1. Download the Flasher
    2. Download the latest firmware image for your N900  (you will need your IMEI of the device)
    3. when you save the global variant of the firmware to the "flasher-3.5" folder, save it as "pr1.2.bin"
    4.  When you save the vanilla file of the firmware to the "flasher-3.5" folder, save it as "vanilla.bin"
    5.  Turn your phone off
    6.  launch the flasher-3.5 program
    7.  type this command:   flasher-3.5.exe -F pr1.2.bin -f
it will then scroll a bunch of gibberish and then say it is looking for a unit.
    8.  with the phone still off, hold slide the kb open and hold the "U" button while you connect the usb cable to the phone.  continue holding the "U" until you see the faint "NOKIA" logo and/or the USB connection symbol in the top right.  The flasher will find the device and automatically flash the unit to the original rom
    9.  after about 1.5 minutes, it will be complete.  DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR UNIT!
    10.  type this command:   flasher-3.5.exe -F vanilla.bin -f -R
    11.  now it should reflash the device and wipe the emmc clean of EVERYTHING.  after it reboots, you can disconnect it.
My problem starts after step 7. It doesn't scrolls any thing nor it says its looking for the unit. It keeps going back to prompt command.
I hope somebody can tell me what mistake I'm doing.
    Thanks.

then try a clean reflash of the device with the global variant, and then do a vanilla flash as well to erase the emmc completely.
before you do this, be sure to connect to your pc in mass storage mode and take any files off the device you want to keep as this will take your device back to factory state and erase EVERYTHING.
HERE FOR DIRECTIONS TO FLASH YOUR N900
you will need to be sure that you have a non-64 bit pc.
    7.  type this command:   flasher-3.5.exe -F pr1.2.bin -f
it will then scroll a bunch of jiberish and then say it is looking for a unit.
    8.  with the phone still off, hold slide the kb open and hold the "U" button while you connect the usb cable to the phone.  continue holding the "U" until you see the faint "NOKIA" logo and/or the USB connection symbol in the top right.  The flasher will find the device and automatically flash the unit to the original rom
    9.  after about 1.5 minutes, it will be complete.  DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR UNIT!
    10.  type this command:   flasher-3.5.exe -F vanilla.bin -f -R
    11.  now it should reflash the deviece and wipe the emmc clean of EVERYTHING.  after it reboots, you can disconnect it.
before you load any software into the device via restoring from your backup, be sure to try the backlight settings again and see if it is still having the issue.
if the issue is gone then there was some software that you had installed that was affecting it.   if the issue is still there, then have your device replaced.
if the issue is resolved, then a couple of things.
    1.  depending on how many applications you had installed, you can go back and install them one at a time and re-sync your contacts/calendar seperately.  or you can do a restore from your back up.
when you do the restore, be sure that you look at all the applications in the list that it is going redownload and install before you allow it to, to be sure they are the only applications you want.
    2.  mark this post as solution and post a kudos to any post above that has helped you in the effort to resolve your issues as a happy thanks to thier efforts in giving you free support for your device that NOKIA did not give you.

  • Nokia n900 in my hand

    hi :
i have Nokia n900 in my hand , it is amazing , fast
let me if u guys have question regarding phone...

    My first impressions:
picked up from the flagship store in regent st on Sumday and had to take the kids shopping for pressies so couldnd play with it for a good few hours until i got back home.... very frustrating .)   i did take a peak and was suprised at how small the phone looks 'in the flesh'  keyboard is nice and compact but could pose probs for people with fat fingers.
if you place on top of an iphone its almost exactly the same size. just a lot thicker.
screen is stunning when you spark it up for the first time and the browser blows any device of this class out of the waterby a wide margin.   im writimg this review on my device whilst in bed .)  excuse any typos....
i did a lot of research before parting with my money and there was a lot of internet chat about battery life.  the first two charge cycles gave me resonable performance and now i can easily get a day of pretty heavy use from 8am until 1900.. wont go into my usage but battery aint an issue for a device of this class and as we are only on public firmware release 1 it can only get better.
after the excitement of powering on subsided i felt a bit dissapointed' especially seeing it cost me 500 quid. this lasted a day. it takes a bit of getting used to the interface and then it all starts to come together. yes there are a few interface issues that need sorting. my main gripe at he mo is currently no mail4exchange support for 2k3 but that can be sorted and the maemo boys are looking into it.
compared to previous handset releases this one seems to have gone very well if you take into account this is the first maemo device that nokia have released that is also a phone.i like to call it a hybrid
i can now say im loving it and my netbook is now gathering dust.  i can browse the internet whist watching tv with the wife and its just as good as a netbook but a lot more portable!!
camera up to normal nokia high standards geotagging works well for me. very fast plus like the tagging of images for searching large albums.  im also loving the customisation possibilities of the whole desktop.  once i got the hang of the phone i spent 6 hrs adding and moving stuff about so everything i use daily is a click away.
once mfe is running contact calandar sync will be good. done an initial sync through the suite and the calandar\contacts diisplay is first class. possibly due to the nice screen res. it all fits on nicely and the calandar month view is so much better than on my bb. looks similar to outlook
x terminal aint too bad for the more advanced users. i set font to green with black background for a nice retro look. much better than the default! font size can also be reduced due to the nice screen so u can see a lot more text and its still clear
reckon in the next few days ill have more to say but the device defiately grows on you the more you discover..

  • I have questions about Nokia N900..can any one ans...

thanks everybody for your answers..but what do you mean cpitchford by Maemo 6 ,is this update to Maemo 5 or it is separate Maemo edition for devices which will come after N900 ??
Maemo 6 (aka Harmattan) is the next maemo OS (think XP to Vista) There isn't any firm guarantee it will run on the N900, but it is due out 2011 by which time the N900 will be quite old in phone terms.
DRM is something Nokia seems to love. They back Microsofts DRM heavy media formats (wma, wmv), they use DRM to manage their games, they use DRM to manage the ring tones on the devices!! Even Nokia music store sells music with DRM (how 2007 of them!! Seriously, DRM on music downloads?? *YAWN* get with the times, Nokia, please!! I can't sync my phone with Nokia music as it copies every track every time I connect my phone and your technical support haven't given me any assistence, so WHY would I pain myself further by using your DRM heavy online music store!?!)
DRM requires kernel (and potentially hardware) level intervention. Maemo traditionally uses a fairly stock Linux kernel and as such DRM doesn't really feature that much..if you have "root" access on the device you could potentially fairly easily circumvent it.. (why? to gain access to stuff you already own?)
To overcome the issues, DRM needs to be fixed into the kernel OR factor in other DRM hardware. It may come on the N900 already, dunno, haven't seen it yet.. but if not I don't think we're going to see it before Maemo6
    In terms for future proofing..
The N810, announced end of 2007, ran OS2008 (maemo 4) which is already end of life.. under 2 years later..
To answer your question, Maemo 6 will be for future devices and *may* be available for the N900..
Don't get me wrong, though.. I don't see this as a problem.. I've owned a 770, N800 and N810 and I will own an N900 when its out.. each time the hardware got a lot better.. more RAM, camera, keyboard, CPU..
