Nokia N95 GPS Maps Navigation now free?

After using Nokia Maploader to get the maps onto my phone, its letting me use the voice navigation for free without buying a subcription. Why?

I hard reset my N95, installed the maps fresh (which took a very long time, but that is a different subject, so I won't get going on that)
I then checked if I could do full 7 digit postcode search while at home and still no, with "Network Use" set to "Never"
However, I have now come into the office, defined the wlan acess point (mine is broken at home) and set "Network Use" to "when needed" and I can do full 7 digit postcode search. If I then change that setting to "never" it reversts back to truncating the postcode.
I would appreciate if other N95 owners could confirm that this happens on their N95 too, and if so, it looks like maps is pulling additional info from somewhere to enchance the downloaded map.
You seem to be right. I cleared all the maps, then downloaded the maps for England using maploader and tested it. With network connection you can do full postcode search, but as soon as the internet connection is lost or turned off the system reverts back to truncating the postcode.
If you use the route planner while you have the network connection you can use the full postcode to set the destination point while having the GPS position as your starting point and the destination point gets stored as your destination.

  • Nokia 6220 - GPS,Maps,Navigation Question

This may be a silly question but I'm a little confused over this
I am considering buying a 6220 (SIM free), mainly because it's an 'upgraded' version to my existing 6300.
The idea is instead of having a SAT NAV (for the occasional trips to places I've never been before) & a mobile phone & a MP3 player etc - I get an all-in-one in a small package
Now to the question - What is the difference between 'Nokia Maps' and 'Navigation' ?.
Apparently 'Nokia Maps' is free but 'Navigation' isn't
Am I right in assuming that 'Nokia Maps' only shows you where you are & Where you want to go BUT doesn't give constant updates as you drive/walk between the 2 - a bit like if you have a map & ask a passerby to shows you where you are & where you want to go on the map - but doesn't tell you how to get there (you have to figure it out yourself)
BUT 'Navigation' is where you can have it in the car & it tells you the directions ('take next left'/'3rd right at next roundabout' etc) each step of the way i.e. Just like a Car 'SAT-NAV' equivalent
I don't like the idea of paying for a 'satnav/phone/media player' combi-device then paying EXTRA so that you can use it as a SAT-NAV, especially if you only going to use it maybe once or twice in a year.
    Motto: Illegitimis non carborundum

  • Nokia N95 GPS Navigation

    Dear All,
I am James and recently bought a Nokia N95. It comes with GPS Navigation but not sure how it works. Looked in the user manual but still not idea of how to work it. I have played around with it and downloaded Google Maps but find it difficult to get a reception.
I want to know how to download maps onto it, what connection is needed and how it actually works?
    Any ideas?
    regards
    James

    Hi,
I'm just back from the US were i used the GPS a good bit. like most GPS's, Navigation on the N95 told me to turn right then left on on straight roads with intersections (watch out for this, always look at the map before turning as you'll see that the route line is straight on screen), sent me down bizarre side roads, never went the same route to a place as it did going back (very strange), but other that that was very handy.
The one major bug I'd like to report is in v20 of the firmware (can't say for others versions), despite disabling network communication in the settings, the phone would still startup my GPRS data pack connection while roaming. Even when I set it to use Wi-Fi, it still made a connection over GPRS. I work out it cost me about a €10 in unnecessary data charges. Easy test to see if you get the same problem: Startup Maps and say no to data usage, exit or Press Menu, Tools, Log. You should see that a Data pack connection was initiated at the same time you started the Maps App. The only way around this I found was to set the phone to offline mode. But you might as well buy a proper GPS if this is the only solution.
    Good luck!
I had exactly the same problem. Once activated, network mode could not be turned off and it cost me around $50 in a day and a half.
As soon as I tried to shut it down in Maps>Options, it either shut down maps or rebooted my phone.
Keep network support off, is my recommendation.
To cure the problem, I had to reload my firmware and software...everything but settings. If you reload settings, you reload the problem.
I spend hours today doing just that. Settings are probably the least important part of my phone history so it wasn't too big of a deal and the effort was totally worth it to save me mega cash while using maps.

  • Nokia N95 8Gb Maps V2.0 problems.

I have had the new Nokia N95 8Gb for just over 2 weeks - I had it from my local Carphone Warehouse in Broughton (near
Chester). The problems I have with Nokia Maps V2.0 are as follows :-
    1. Very slow on calculating a route - I am visiting numerous factory sites around the UK, so I saved the postcodes. On this particular occassion, I wanted to plan a known route home from one of the sites (53 miles), and I was nearly home when it had planned the route.
    2. When a route has been calculated, the cursor showed itself just to the side of the road I was on, thus telling me I was not on a road.
    3. Keeps changing the orientation - from pointing in the diretion I want to go (forward), to the direction I have been (backwards).
    4. Planned road display changes from full width to narrow line - at this point, it no longer knows where it is and tries to recalculate route until the road changes back to full width.
I looked at the various forums (both Nokia and others), and there are many threads reporting the problems I have described above. I tried all of the suggestions including :-
    1. Switching off Assisted GPS - in the Positioning methods - seemed to make no difference.
    2. Use an external GPS receiver - much better in locating position, but still the same problems in reliability detailed above.
    3. Switched off the go online when starting up Nokia Maps - this just made locating position take much longer.
    4. Full hard reset of the phone, twice - no improvement.
    5. Download Nokia Maps V2.0 and re-install - no improvement.
The overriding conclusions from the various forums was that Nokia Maps V2.0 is a backward step and that Nokia Maps V1.2 was so much better. As a consequence, I downloaded Nokia Maps V1.2 and loaded this up. I used it for a 400 mile round trip with no problem at all - directions were clearly displayed, route calculation was quick and it never lost it's position. Unfortunately, I can only use the route planning for 3 days - free test from Nokia when I connected to see licence details. The
only issue I have is that as my car has Bluetooth, I cannot use the voice navigation whilst using Nokia Maps, however, this is not an issue as I just keep checking the screen.
As I am pretty reliant on being able to get to the various sites without complications, there is no way that I will reload Nokia Maps V2.0 until I can be assured of its reliability. Unfortunately, I can not use the route
planning either as my licence relates to Nokia Maps V2.0. What I want is to either transfer my 2 licences to Nokia Maps V1.2, or have a refund for Nokia Maps V2.0 and then purchase licences for Nokia Maps V1.2.
Any assistance would be gratefully received. I have been in contact with Nokia Care who have suggested reloading maps 2.0, however I have already done this. They now suggest updating the phone software, however, it is at v 30.0.018 (pre-loaded) which is the latest version. I am due to take it in to my local Nokia Care Centre tomorrow and let them look at it.

i've just read the thread you posted on10th dec 2008 about nokia maps v2.0. what was the outcome of your n95?

  • N95 GPS maps for Iceland

    Hi all
I have tryed the Nokia Map loader and I find alot of maps but Iceland in not there. Do you know if I can grap it somewhere or do I haveto use a 3rd party software for GPS ?
    Regards from Iceland

    Hi there,
Does anyone know of any updates on this? I am happy to use the non-navigable maps for now as I have a good road map (but a terrible sense of direction!). Would be really useful to be able to download whatever maps there are beforehand. I have been browsing the map over a WiFi connection on an N78 and quite a lot of data comes down. Map Loader doesn't list Iceland so I can't seem to download anything that way.
    Aggh!
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks,

Hi.. I have Nokia N95 (N95-1 by user manual) - device firmware soft version
    11.0.026

    Nokia N95(05.01)
When i try use "GPS position" application or "Maps" it's dos not work. All ways i see - "no connected" in status (in my home, in street and other open places). In all times that i'am user my N95 only one time by command "Satellites State" y have screen with 2 satellite (~5second) and other time allways "No Data or No Connected Satellites".
Q: Whats the problem - it's that Qaulite(or Strong) of GPS(for that needed like it GPS)? or it's defect and GPS must work avrever (and home, and on street)
When i try use application "Barcode Reader" - it's no one times dos not readed barcode? Only try? and try, and try... all times?
Q: Why dos not work? who see worked "Barcode reader"?
    Thank to ALL..
    (with love from Russia)
Nokia! Take a care for me and we real say THANK YOU NOKIA and you can collect a more money

First of all , you should update to the newest firmware (v20). If you can of course, for some network branded phones update is not available yet.
As for GPS, first fix is taking a long time (5 to 10 minutes).
In v12 and above A-GPS (assisted GPS) was added to speedup the process. It's using data connection for initial lock.
And make sure you're not covering tha hash key, that's where GPS reciever is. It will get a fix, just be patient because it will take some time.
Barcode reader is not for reading normal barcodes (like on products). It's used for Nokia's mobilecodes. You can check it here

  • Nokia N95 GPS not loading propaly

Hi I hope some can help as between NOkia and vodaphone i am going mad I have bought a Nokia N95 phone and last weekend i was playing around with it,I must say my husband has the same phone and has no trouble with.I log onto the maps and littlr yellow lights go back and forth until it is replaced by green ones when it finds the satalite, but then it does nothing,my husbands automatcly homes in to out adress.but my N95 does not, i have asked nokia but to no aviale, they just told me to log on to the maps and it will home in automatacly which it does not has any one else had this trouble.I can manually zoom in with the * and the # keys but it will not do it by itself. My husbands N95 has a picture of a satalite dish in the bottom right hand corner and mine has some thing totally diffrent with the little lights going back and forth, and changing from yellow to green,The other thing i bought the N95 to use as a navagation unit as well as a phone but to my horrow last week just by playing about with it logging on and off and looking at the maps i was charged over £10.00 from my pay as you go balance.I thought it would log on to a satalite and away you go like a tom tom or similair i did not know it had to go through a internet connection can any one enlighten me how it works because i cant see how any one could afford to use it with this kind charge
Any help would be gratfully recieved
    Anne

    Hi Purravida,
You might want to delete the old maps and folders from your memory card - the location of the maps has changed. Nokia Map Loader 1.2.1 seems to be downloading the maps to the old directory system if it exists but your software on the phone will be looking at the new directory and will try to load the maps over the data connection.
I had to delete the hidden Private directory and all of its contents to get the Nokia Map Loader to recognise that there is a new directory structure on my memory card. It could have been something else, but that fixed my problem of the new Nokia Maps not finding the downloaded maps (and trying to download them over the data connection.) Be sure to make a backup that you don't delete anything you would need...

  • Nokia N95 and Maps Software

Hi, Just recently I bought licence to Maps from Nokia for one month just to check how it works. The day I bought this I could not open Maps software for a single time. Because whenever I click on maps, its load 90% then it hang. I tried again and again nothing it does not open, I restart the mobile, nothing happen. Can you please inform me what can I do? Thanking you.

    @countryjet123
Would need to know whether you are using Nokia Maps v2.0 or Ovi Maps v3 from here:http://europe.nokia.com/support/product-support/maps-support/compatibility-and-download#/nokia-n95/
Map data is different between these versions and most common cause of application crashing is corrupt or incorrect data.
You may need to delete E:\cities + .qf file, re-open Maps application to re-initialise application and re-define necessary folder structure for Ovi Suite > Maps to re-download regional mapping.

  • Nokia N95 GPS

Hi people....I bought a brand new N95...and the first thing i did was GPS thing....
Here's the problem....i guess many of us have the same problem...
I'm running everything as i should...i got 4 Empty bars of satellites...i'm waiting for them to turn Black and full for 30 min...but no success...
I'm opening "Maps" and there's a red cross on the satellite...when i move the cursor it says gps positioning or smth like that...when i press it it goes to some city in germany i think....
So could someone PLEASE tell me how to make this thing work....because i want that most of all...and now it's getting me mad...
P.S.I downloaded all the maps required for my country Macedonia...When i'm looking for navigation on the streets it's ok...BUT WHAT ABOUT MY CURRENT LOCATION ?!?!?!I'm not in berlin for sure
    Thanks in advance

    I'm reffering to v20.0.015
The traffic lights of the sattelite keep moving n' stuff... and after a long time it stays still (ie gets connected..)
Some settings I have in the Positioning are..
    Positioning Methods:
    Not Selected - Bluetooth GPS
    Selected - Assisted GPS
    Integrated GPS
    Network Based
    Positioning Server:

  • Nokia N95 GPS - 616 Car Kits

When i use the GPS on my N95 - if it connnectd to the car kit the voice navigation does not come on - i have to diconnect from the kit to use GPS properly. If i use the remote sim option it mute the radio at all times until i close the nagivation application. Any suggestions

Looks to be a problem with a lot of car kits... many don't do the bluetooth audio thing - tho they do phone calls fine (different profiles I guess...)
So when you pair the phone to the car you loose the Nav voice because the phone is trying to pass all things audio over the bluetooth link - even if the car doesn't know what to do with it..
Leaving you in the position where calls work fine but voice nav is lost...
It'd be nice if we could leave the nav using the phone speakers and the calls using the bluetooth car kit... it might be a bit of a compromise but at least it would keep us legal whilst driving and still allow the use of the maps.. after all where better to use a nav app than in a car???
Pity Nokia seemed to have missed this one....

  • Nokia N95 GPS showing different locations and inac...

First of all, I did all of the following while I am standing stationary under the sky. Okay, so I first went to tools-conect.-landmarks. There i made a new landmark using my current location. Then I went to Nokia Maps but the 'My Position' location(the red dot) and the landmark I made previously was not the same place(it was maybe around 30-40m apart). The thing is every time I made a new land mark with the Landmark option, it gives the same location and every time i open Maps, I gives me the other same location. Why??
Another thing is while driving using Maps, it seems that in the map I appear to be driving off the road. The satellite shows three-quarter full. Why is it still inaccurate?
Please help! I have never had any experience with GPS!

I finally solved mine! Turns out I was using the phone in offline mode. The problem just disappears when I went online, It was like the Maps software needed to synchronize itself by using the network connection. The 'Maps' is much more accurate now. It seems the coordinate using the 'Landmarks' was correct but the 'Maps' was a bit off

When i origannally got the phone the maps were coming up.
But now since i have downloaded and installed nokia maps nothing is happening.
I have nokia map loader and have downloaded the australian map succsesfully but still no maps are coming up on my maps.
    Could you please help?

Do you get a satelite fix?
    Try this!
Save all data like mp3s, contacts etc.(not "city" folder)
Format memory card, then open mapps app. and wait for satelite fix. Close maps app. This vill create the nesesary folders om mem.card.
Use maploader to download new maps.

  • Nokia N95 Previous Map Installs

I am currently using version v2.0 wk45 B04 of nokia maps and have not got one connection yet even leaving it upto 1 hour.
Before my phone went in for repair i was on the latest V31.0.017 firmware but on v2.0 wk30 B04 which connected nearly always immediately, I have tried googleing but cant find a download for this version.
If anyone knows how to get that version of the install can you let me know please

    Hi twobit
Apart from the need to backup essential data, if you carry out a reset by keying in *#7370# on standby screen followed by 12345 (default Nokia lock code) unless altered by yourself device will revert to earlier version of Nokia Maps pre-installed in the firmware. That said your issue is more likely to be that network internet connection for "Assisted GPS" feature in Positioning > Positioning server is incorrectly defined after update.

    Hi all,
I have few questions about GPS using.
    - Does N95 support JSR179(Location API)? If yes, did anyone try to run MIDlets with using JSR179? Does it work?
    - Does N95 has intefaces to share GPS data to PC. May be the latest version of "PC suite" can collect GPS data from the device. I want to use the phone like GPS receiver for my laptop's applications.
    Thanks.

Yes, it supports JSR-179. You can check it here:
