Nokia N97 3 months in

as a member of this forum since I got my N97 i regularly read the boards and hear some horror stories and grievances and just thought i'd like to share my observations on the phone so far
as with all new technologies there are always bugs and things to iron out i chose the n97 primarliy as an all in one device as i wanted a change from my iphone and as someone who travels daily for work the ability to entertain me and keep me in touch was a main reason to chose this phone. 32Gb of expandable memory pretty much unheard of for a phone was a killer for me. Video playback as all devices is depending on the formats from ipod to archos to iphone to n95 all seem to have slightly different formats and its just a case of getting a good convertor and getting settings that work i found a ipod convertor freeware software by dvd videosoft (i use the high quality settings)
I now have over 15 films on the phone which all playback fantastic quality
Mp3 playback im pleased with and the beauty of the device is i dont need to bring an mp3 and expensive phone to work wish the player was a little slicker and had a nicer interface but i reckon firmware 2 may sort that. the remotes very nice replaced the headphones. Web browsing is ok not as smooth as the iphone but hey
Camera I havent used much but no problems with the lens cover perhaps because ive used good cases since day 1 and do like to look after the device cleaning it regularly.
The downpoints so far have been for me the missing photos really annoying if you download a pic from the we for album art as you have a 75% chancer of it appearing in the gallery, having to reboot is always a pain but as a follower of new tech have had this since the spv to the n70 to now so i take that as part of having a lot of tech in a small machine. The widgets in particular the facebook widget are bloody annoying as evrytime you lose connection you ended up having to remove the widget and reinstall same with iplayer
But overall I love the phone and wouldnt swap it for anything else on the market Iplayer is a great feature
and being able to drag and drop files and the ever growing instore software and 3rd party apps for me give it the edge over an iphone
as an owner of both i gave the iphone to my daughter and have no regrets roll on firmware 2.0

  • Problem updating Nokia N97 firmware over the arir ...

    OK here goes,
I'm having some real problems updating the firmware on my white nokia N97
I recently bought it of the web as a 12 month contract onto t-mobile (not there website though) in th uk
After noticing some problems i googled and noticed a firmware update had been released on 1st july 2009
I tried to get the firmwae over the air (OTA) via typing in *#0000# and selecting check for updates. I get no updates available for nokia and t-mobile (unsure what the difference is?)
So i heard try using nokia software updater.
i downloaded latest version 1.6.13 and installed it on a windows vista 32-bit home premium laptop ok
i have also installed all of the stuff that came with the cd with the phone (ovistore etc )
when i plug the phone into the laptop i get four options (PC, media, usb and something else) first time it ran it installed the necessary drivers and so therefore when i now plug it it just connects as expected.
so the laptop is detecting the nokia n97 at this stage
when i then load nokia software updater click next i put the phone into general mode on full charge with a sim card in it and click next again to detect the phone is pc suite mode
after about 2 minutes it says it can detect the phone although i can go to my computer and traverse the folder view!
i can even set it off looking for the phone pluggin it in and the autoplay options of vista will kick in in the background detecting the phone (ie outisde scope of nokia software updater)
i have tried all different connections mode pc suite mode etc different profiles nothing. tried it onto different pcs with different windows version on it. tried reinstalling software updater
my software version is 10.0.012 and my product code is 0587240
interestingly when i goto the can i update on nokias website it says no i have the latest version when i supply this information. weird
im kinda in catch 22 because there is a bug with pc usb detection of the phone in version 10 but i cant update to version 11 because of this bug
its driving me nuts any help greatly appreciated
    thanks in advance
    Cheers

    mega
just what i wanted cheers nokia
It will break your facebook as you have re-formatted the C: drive of you phone. Was you facebook installed to the E: drive by any chance?
Go to OVI Store and re-install it.
It may be work installing it from OVI Store then un-installing that one to clean off the mess you have been left with post formatt and then re-installing it fresh from OVI Store.
As I always say. Before doing a re-format always  uninstall all apps/widgests before doing a hard reset or factory reset.
I also do a this and a factory reset before firmware updates to clean my phone. Should really do a hard reset/format as this would be cleaner still, but tehn I would have to do a lot more set-up afterwards.

  • Problem in nokia n97 charging

sridharrb - apart from the fact that your problem has no relationship to this thread, your problem is a symptom of the rubbish handsets that Nokclue build. The only real fix is to replace your phone with a handset from another manufacturer.
    Nokia N97 (RM-507) v 22
    iPhone 4 (Coming Soon) - Lemon N97 - SE - Nokia 8210 - Nokia 7710 - Nokia 5100

When i connect charger to my mobile (n97 mini) it wont charge automatically, i need to switch off the mobile and start again then it will charge, its really sucks,
almost a month i am struggling with it, Even i give it to nokia service dealer they just erase the software and clean but still the problem same.
What could be the problem and how can i fix it.

  • Nokia N97 not charging

My Nokia N97 use to be in perfect condition and would charge every time i plug it in. However, lately whenever I plug it in, it charges and then it stops and says "Unplug charger from power supply to save energy" and then it says "Not Charging" and then it charges again and then it doesn't. The light near the charging slot always turn on and off multiple times. I have to play around with the charger and plug it in and out multiple times to get it to work. When it finally starts to charge, it takes extremely long to charge. It used to charge quick but now it take hours. Also, if it is charging, and I accidently touch the phone or the cord, it will immediately stop charging. Then I have to play around with the cord again so it will charge. Please help! What is the problem with my phone and how can I fix it? Thanks so much!

I have the exact same problem.
A new charger does not solve the issue.
The problem also occurs on USB. However, the USB connection is left in place even if it stops charging. And when connected to the charger: the phone does notice the charger is still connected. As soon as I pull the plug it immedieately puts up the notice again that I should unplug it for energy savings.
So it does know it is connected, but it simply refuses to charge the battery untill you disconnect and reconnect it multiple times.
    This is either:
    1.) A software issue
2.) A issue with the battery's internal protection.
I sent a large email to Nokia regarding this issue as this entire N97 is starting to me very angry. Nokia must be laughing very hard about the people paying a ton of money for a product that doesnt even work and will not work for even a year!
Camera slide problems, unlock slide falling off, C: space running low even if you install everything on E: and now the battery that appears to be dead after less than 8 months.
And support or warranty service is nowhere to be found, the nearest Care point only helps ppl that have a business contract with them and the other care points are uber far away. And if you want to send your phone: it can take up to a month or more before it will be repaired!
Great job Nokia.... Your service is extremely bad, and with such a bad service: your phones are way too expensive. You dont care about the clients as soon as they have paid. You dont provide any service at all.
    To topic starter:
try to charge your phone on USB. If it charges without issues: get a new charger.
If it gives the same issues: Check your battery or try to find a Care point. Although the care point dont really care about customers.

  • Crime of buying a Nokia N97

I see that I'm not all alone who has issues with N97. This is the worst phone ever and guess what I have a Nokia 6630 from the time it was launched and it works better then N97.... My phone was with their repair team for almost a month as firmware issue, camera flash was constantly on despite switching the phone off (on connecting the battery it would start), the camera quality was soo bad and its settings never responded; you login to facebook and cannot logout, the phone gets hangs in between, the swipe doesnt work sometimes when you try to answer the call, while loading applications or widgets the screen goes black... I have set the main internet connection point to be my WLAN but sometimes it automatically switches to "Data Package" by the service provider which I have not made as an access point and clearly defined WLAN (lost all my credit due to this).... once back in the WLAN area the phone does not search and connect to it by default and the other net applications like news, weather, etc does not connect unless I reset the phone.
Its been two months since I bought this phone with one month being with Nokia for repair work (infact they swapped the whole phone) but did not replace it... Yeah finally can someone tell me how to delete the email headers from the mailbox... it never deletes and hoped this would have been resolved by the new firmware as per Nokia service people...
I have had HTC phones - my god what a phone it was and never had to these issues esp with WLAN as it used to automatically scan and update information..
Exhausted and mentally tortured by Nokia N97 and time taken to repair the phone but still no difference.... should have gone for HTC Pro2
P.S - Nokia please recall this stupid **bleep** machine of yours and replace it with a new one or refund customers back their money...

"Many users of the N97 have been reporting various system based errors and bugs that have been plaguing the device since its release date. There are even entire forums dedicated to the bugs and problems of N97 users –a testament to how unstable the system is. The big blow came as both mobile carrier Vodafone UK and distributer Electronista have stopped offering the device to customers. Electronista now redirects buyers to the more stable N97 Mini and Vodafone no longer lists the device."

  • Disappointed from Nokia N97

HI i purchases a Nokia N97 about a month or two ago. i picked the white version and at the same time my dad picked the black version. over this past month i had so many problems with it such as shutting off for no reason quitting applications for no reason, having a black screen for a few second, etc.
i went to the Nokia Flagship store and they took my phone to diagnose it. They replaced some vibration sensor which did not help at all and my phone kept on having all of those problems. Yesterday i went to the store and they replaced my phone in a new one, now this phone is also messed up. most of the time it gives me this error message: "disk error - cannot complete write retry or data will be lost"
I'm really getting sick of this phone because I'm paying alot more for it since i need to drive to the store and waste so much of my time.
As i said before my dad has the black version and has non of these problems and errors he's runs smoothly.

Look, if your phone’s a lemon take it back and demand replacement. If the store will only offer to fix it, contact Nokia (your phone is still under warranty) and see if they will replace it for you. If they offer to repair, accept the offer if you want to keep the phone (they will send you a UPS label for return, so you won’t have to drive to the store again). If you don’t, sell it and count your losses and move on. There are options for you if you wish to use them. Sometimes life isn’t simple. The people here that kindly offer tech support and help for all manner of problems do so as a kindness and willingness to help others. They are not employees of Nokia, just people like you and me. The only difference between them and you, to paraphrase John Lennon, is that to them there are no problems, only solutions. This is a support forum, not a mope forum. If, as you say, you came here with absolutely no desire to receive help from forum members, but merely to gripe, then I would suggest you find a place more suitable to unload your angst and self-pity.

  • Nokia N97 loss of signal.

    Hi to all!
Let's get straight to the point. So, my Nokia N97 lost its signal! i restarted the phone and everything. What should I do?

Contact your service provider, you may have a sim card problem, I had a new sim sent a couple of months ago as mine was about 5yrs old and they are improving as time goes by, unless you dropped your phone or something, it's unlikely that the phone would just 'stop' receiving a signal !

  • Do The New Nokia N97's Have The Latest Firmware Ru...

Do the new nokia n97's have the latest firmware running on them (V20) or do i have to upgrade it after it arrives?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

That depends how long it has been since the phone left the factory? It is possible that some retailers have a stock that is very big, so that the phones that they sell right now have a firmware that is a few months old...
Where are you planning buying the phone?

  • How to get money back for Nokia n97?

     Hi Guys!
I gave up with Nokia N97!!! I have a lot of problems with it. All of them are known. While this 2,5 months of using the device I was so **bleep** off and felt very uncomfortable while using it! Is that what we paid $700 for?? To see how good it is in the official video commercial and how damn SLOW, buggy and how bad the hardware is? I waited for software update and was hoping to see nice and fast device, oh! and working GPS! Instead - it's still the same "smart" which is most worse on nokia market. That's enough!
So now I have this question: How to get money back for Nokia n97 after 2,5 months of usage? or maybe exchange to n900? I will call to customer care center soon but maybe  someone of you have done this already and you can give some tips?
     Thank You!
     Cheers
     Hi guys!

put it up for sale, you have used it for over 30 days nokia will not give you a refund. sell it and buy yourself another device in this case. im giving mine away to a friend. he likes the n97 so its a win win
You know what I love about you the most, the fact that you are not me ! In love with technology and all that it can offer. Join me in discovery....

  • Thinking of getting another nokia n97

I have a HTC Desire on 3 uk and like the phone but want a second device for sat nav .. i am thinking of bidding on a 6 month nokia n97 locked to 3 uk as I loved the phone when I had it last time and must admit didnt have the dreaded error messages re memory
I notice that the firmware is now v 21 has this improved the phone ???
I love ovi map and cant stand the google map ....
what do you think ... if not what about any of the other nokias that do the free ovi maps ??
    ta

My phones have been Vodafone branded, and maybe that's the cause, but I'm not aware that 3 is any better, I can only give advice on my own experience, and I truly wish it mirrored CJ's, but it hasn't, and if anything the phone has got worse with V2.2 (I'm in the middle of it's 3rd hard reset as I type) When it's working it's the best phone I've ever owned, but barely a day goes by without at the very least having to remove the battery. I do have the phone FULL of stuff, but I bought it as a multimedia smart phone, and refuse to run it empty with occasional navigation , WHY SHOULD I ??
Hope you are happy with whatever choice you make, and if it's N97, I hope you're one of the lucky ones !

  • Isync for Nokia N97?

I am looking for a isync plugin for Nokia N97. Does anyone know if it will be available soon or if there is a work around to get it working?
    Cheers

What you've been told by Nokia is incorrect.
Yes, iSync is Apple's software, but it is Nokia who has been creating iSync plugins for their phones for the past 18 months or so.
They even provide them from their own support web-site here:
    http://www.nokia.com/isync
Apple have not added any new phones to iSync since Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard was released in October 2007 - they are leaving that task to the phone manufacturers and third-party developers.

  • People who cannot update their Nokia n97 to firmwa...

People who cannot update their Nokia n97 to firmware v21.0.045 please post your comments here, provide your product code and whether  your phone is unbranded or not.
Nokia has stated that the new firmware (v21.0.045) will be available at 08:00 GMT for "standard non-customised versions of the software , with country (SIM-free) and operator versions following over the next few days and weeks." *This can take up to a month for the firmware to be approved by your Operator*
BUT if you still cannot update your n97 by the stated period of time please post your comments here. Also post here if your unbranded phone is incapable of updating

  • Serious problems with my Nokia N97

I've recently restored the factory settings on my Nokia N97, which I've had for less than 6 months.
I've reloaded all my photos onto the phone..But, now when I got into my photos from the menu the only option that comes up is "Share Online"  I can't access my photos at all, when i take a photo with my phone..It doesn't show up anywhere.
    Help PLEASE!!
Also, where can I send this phone to get repaired in Adelaide? How much will it cost??

Hi, firstly did you restore factory settings via Phone management, or by doing a soft reset ? If the former try backing up contacts and calender NOT settings, then dial *#7370# followed by 12345, phone will reset nad you'll have to set it up again, but hopefully , you will not need to have it repaired, as this action tends to solve many issues.
Secondly, if the phone is only 6 months old you won't have to pay, according to Google the nearest Nokia care centre is here:
    82 Frome St
    Adelaide SA 5000, Australia
    (08) 8227 0499

  • Nokia N97 Warranty

Hello, I had purchased a Nokia N97 with a 12 month warranty from the Philippines in September 2009 and I had came back to U.S. as that is where I live. But I just found out that my warranty is not valid here in the U.S. Does anyone know if it's possible to transfer the warranty over to the U.S.? Is it possible to buy an insurance or something right now for my phone? Thanks
P.S. I don't have the receipt of my purchase anymore because I could not bring it back to the U.S.

    Hi
Unfortunately you won't be able to transfer the Nokia warranty over to the U.S as the warranty is only valid for the region the handset was intended for, Europe, U.S, Asia etc.
You might be able to take out insurance on the handset but you would need to check this with the actual insurance company to see if they would cover imported handsets

  • NOKIA N97 Dark/night shot imaging issue

there is imaging issue with night shot, whenever i shots pics in dark/night it gives me pic with white fadded in left side of image,is just bcoz of dual led flash which is very close to camera lens .anybody are facing the same problem...

Just thought I'd add a follow up to this. Last night as I couldn't add my email account using the standard Nokia N97 email set-up so instead I used the Email Client application (Email on 3) that came from Three Mobile (my network provider) in the UK. I have been using this Three mobile client for my work email but used the N97 email app for my hotmail but the hotmail account stopped working when I upgraded the firmware software a couple of days ago and have been unable to add any new email accounts using the N97 email application. However last night I added my hotmail account using the Three email client and on doing so I got back 42mb from somewhere. I don't know if this is a fault with Three email client or some other interaction somewhere but from nowhere I got all this space back.
For months I have been losing space and have been removing applications to get back last bits of space but was now down to below 1mb for the past week and ran out of apps to delete.
I think this was probably yhe Three client app but am a bit suspicious that after this firmware upgrade I cannot add any email clients using the standard built in email software.
Just though I'd post this in case it helps anyone else of points someone in the right direction. Will keep an eye on the space and see if it still goes down quickly and if so will try deleting the hotmail email account and see if that frees the space. I will post back if that is the case.
Definatley reluctant to do any more firmware upgrades from now on though as have lost my built in email app (fails to connect to any accounts anymore)  and can no longer use the external wireless Nokia keyboard I had. Hate to think what I'd lose on the next upgrade.
    Thanks
