Nokia N97 User Suggestions

Hi all, i use N96 untill a few days back, when i lost the phone. and now i'm planning to get a new one to replace that. my eyes are on N97 and i would like to have some feedback from its' users. so please help me in this.
Thanks!

Well, personally speaking, I am really happy with my N97. I bought a SIM-free handset from Carphone Warehouse and am running it on O2 with a Simplicity tariff.
The majority of people on this forum (and others) have problems with their handset and that's the whole point of them posting here. The silent majority have no problems and as a result you don't hear from them.
While I agree the initial firmware (10.x) was poor, v11 is far more robust and I can say my N97 is stable and running nicely. As a UK user I am still waiting on the release of the v12 firmware, but I am also aware that 2.0 is due in October which should provide a milestone in the N97 timeline. I just hope Nokia release it here in the UK at the start instead of making us wait like they usually do.
On a final point, at Nokia World on the 2nd of September, Nokia confirmed they had sold 2 million N97s and that it was outselling the N95 on a like-for-like basis which is great news. More sales means continued support from Nokia in terms of firmware updates.
It's your choice what handset to get and I applaud you for doing your research but from my point of view, the N97 is a great device which is set to get even better.

  • Nokia N97 User Interface on Nokia 5530

I know this is a stretch, but is there a way to get the N97 home screen interface on the 5530? I know both run off S60, but I thought it was pretty cool to have a bunch of different widgets readily available on my homescreen, rather than connecting to 3 or 4 different websites separately through the Nokia internet browser. If you can help, thanks. If not, no worries.

  • Why Nokia is not listening to N97 users?

It is a big shame to Nokia that it even do not reply saying, we are sorry about the inconvineance caused because of N97, we are trying to fix it, wait for so many days.
It will give lot of relief to me because from last so many years i am using only Nokia, and i can't even think of others (may be that is what made Nokia so reluctent).
I had visited Nokia Care Centre 4 times after taking this phone (5 times i have updated my firmware usng PC with two times hard reset) but NCC do not do anything, i had given my charger adapter and headset for faulty replacement do you know the best part is both periphels came as it was, no change. F***** O**
sorry Nokia for loosing trust on you, somehow i have wait till my INR 31,500 get depriciated over period of time, uske bhad maine tumhe NO KIYA ( hindi I did NO TO YOU)

    Hay thanks Xploit,
You know i am really not having any problem with my N97 as of now (but unlucky me it started from last night after posting here
I work in garment industry, do you know if my customer not satisfied with my shirts he throws it on my face (remember we do not claim any warranty ) but as a "customer is the king" we do listen to him and replace or discount him if there is any problem.
Doesn't that sound ethical or professional to be loyal to their warranty? Many people complain about paying extra money for softwears (like quickoffice, PDF reader, Joikuspot etc., ) i am not complaining that because it is my fault to purchase such a heafty phone if it doesn't comes with these softwears, fine i agree because that was the deal.
But how can i accept a faulty headphone?
Sorry i just went on writing....
    But I love my N97.

  • My Nokia n97 mini was stolen, and when i found it ...

I have a problem, my Nokia n97 mini was stolen, and when i found it my "lock code" was chandged. . .i used "hard reset" bud my phone dosent work at code 12345 or 0000. . .how can I ever found out witch is the code after "hard reset" ? O.o
Moderator's Note: We have changed the title into a subject-related title. This is to keep the forum organized and let other forum users easily see and respond to this post.

    Hi Klicko,
As per your post, hard reset does not work because the code was changed. If that is the case, we can suggest you to do the Key Combination Reset for your phone. You can do this by:
    1. Opening the slide of your phone
On the keyboard, press simultaneously Shift (left) + Space + Backspace and press the Power button
If the hard reset is successful, the device is reset to factory settings and boots up prompting for the country, date and time settings. However, if this will not work successfully on your phone, the best option that we can do is to bring the phone to the nearest Nokia Care Center within your place for the to be reset to its original setting by our authorized technicians.

  • Navigation on Nokia N97

    Hi all,
I have been doing a trial and error on the maps in Nokia N97 phone and would now like to share and seek your advise to finalise one. I tried the following for usage mainly in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and China:
    1. Nokia Maps: Very nice user interface, quick to load and always feel good to use the Nokia stuff in a Nokia Phone. But unfortunately it has problems. It does not have very detailed maps of Asia (see Google or a local service provider for difference and strange considering India and China are moving/has potential markets to move the cellphone economy now a days). Secondly, the traditional problem of connecting with GPS satelites (minimum 3/4 minutes and sometimes longer) is always there.
    2. Google Maps 3: Very good, easy to load and free. But not voice guidance and navigation system is very poor, no automatic re-routing etc. Google surely would capture this space in a year or two but I need to use the map now.
    3. Sygic: Procured recently. It comes with pre-installed maps, without other hidden costs or data plans, with no additional subscription fee for maps or data transfers. By far the preferred option because unlike Nokia it has got into collaborations with various local companies so that map becomes as accurate as possible. But, it has problems too. Almost 1.5 GB in your mass memory and produce a big cache. The N97 hangs quite frequently after loading this software. The updates are less frequent. Somehow looks bit out of sync with N97 with limited touch functionality.
    4. Garmin: Its quite ok and have a tie up with some local companies as well. The Maps are detailed and updated regularly. But in landscape mode it looks buggy.
    5. Tom Tom: Not designed for N97 and you need to use the key board.
Thanks for your suggestions. I am sure I have missed out quite a few and look forward to your inputs.

Hy!First sorry for my bad English.

    Go to Solution.

    Hi Aurora,
Thank you for your first post and a big welcome to the Nokia discussion forums. And no need to apologise for your English its perfectly fine!
What I would suggest is to try the following:
Firstly remove the wireless connection from your phone and reset the router then try reconnecting. Also please clear all the cache from the web browser.
If this doesn't reset the phone by doing a soft reset by typing *#7780# (Please remember to back up your phone) and then try reconnecting.
If this doesn't work then please try a hard reset by typing *#7370# (Again please make sure you have backed up your phone!!).
Just to mention if your phone asks for a security code then the default code 12345.
Let me know if any of the above helps if not then please let me know and I shall endeavourer to think of some more potential troubleshooting we could try.
    Regards

  • Problem updating Nokia N97 firmware over the arir ...

    OK here goes,
I'm having some real problems updating the firmware on my white nokia N97
I recently bought it of the web as a 12 month contract onto t-mobile (not there website though) in th uk
After noticing some problems i googled and noticed a firmware update had been released on 1st july 2009
I tried to get the firmwae over the air (OTA) via typing in *#0000# and selecting check for updates. I get no updates available for nokia and t-mobile (unsure what the difference is?)
So i heard try using nokia software updater.
i downloaded latest version 1.6.13 and installed it on a windows vista 32-bit home premium laptop ok
i have also installed all of the stuff that came with the cd with the phone (ovistore etc )
when i plug the phone into the laptop i get four options (PC, media, usb and something else) first time it ran it installed the necessary drivers and so therefore when i now plug it it just connects as expected.
so the laptop is detecting the nokia n97 at this stage
when i then load nokia software updater click next i put the phone into general mode on full charge with a sim card in it and click next again to detect the phone is pc suite mode
after about 2 minutes it says it can detect the phone although i can go to my computer and traverse the folder view!
i can even set it off looking for the phone pluggin it in and the autoplay options of vista will kick in in the background detecting the phone (ie outisde scope of nokia software updater)
i have tried all different connections mode pc suite mode etc different profiles nothing. tried it onto different pcs with different windows version on it. tried reinstalling software updater
my software version is 10.0.012 and my product code is 0587240
interestingly when i goto the can i update on nokias website it says no i have the latest version when i supply this information. weird
im kinda in catch 22 because there is a bug with pc usb detection of the phone in version 10 but i cant update to version 11 because of this bug
its driving me nuts any help greatly appreciated
    thanks in advance
    Cheers

just what i wanted cheers nokia
It will break your facebook as you have re-formatted the C: drive of you phone. Was you facebook installed to the E: drive by any chance?
Go to OVI Store and re-install it.
It may be work installing it from OVI Store then un-installing that one to clean off the mess you have been left with post formatt and then re-installing it fresh from OVI Store.
As I always say. Before doing a re-format always  uninstall all apps/widgests before doing a hard reset or factory reset.
I also do a this and a factory reset before firmware updates to clean my phone. Should really do a hard reset/format as this would be cleaner still, but tehn I would have to do a lot more set-up afterwards.

  • Problem with Nokia N97

    Hi,
My N97 went off all the sudden out of the blue so i tried switching it back on but it just froze on the welcome message (the blank screen saying "NOKIA") ...i've tried taking the battery out and putting it back in, connecting it to the charger, connecting it to the pc, but nothing seem to works!
    Can someone help me please!

    hi @ all.
you are not alone with this problem.
when u browse google, u would see, that several n97 users have the same problem.
it must be a huge bug in n97 which nokia is not able to solve this problem during the last firmware-updates.
i have this problem nearly every 2 days when i turn on my phone.
i have the same problem and a little bit tricky solution to start your phone.
    follow these steps:
    1. take out your battery and insert it again
    2. turn on your phone and wait until the screen became white.
    3. take out your battery BEFORE the blue nokia splash appears!
    4. insert battery again and turn your phone on once again.
    5. wait up to 30 seconds until your phone boots normal and will have your pin.
NOTE: if this is not working at first time, than repeat step 1., 2. and 3. once or twice a time and then try to boot the phone completely.
    it works fine for me.
BUT NOKIA MUST REALLY SOLVE THIS PROBLEM AS FAST AS POSSIBLE!
    =======================================================
hi rande, I am afraid that the trick may not work on my phone. I installed
Nokia Messaging 10.1 and MSN messager again today and the same problem
    occurs again.So it is reproducible.
Interesting, when I tried your trick the first time, it worked. I thought, at least a
handy work around is there, no more reset and reinstallation..
However, when I tried again, no matter how many times I repeat and how many different
combination, it does not work anymore.  Take out battery when the
white is dimmer and full lit. Really disappointed.

  • Crime of buying a Nokia N97

I see that I'm not all alone who has issues with N97. This is the worst phone ever and guess what I have a Nokia 6630 from the time it was launched and it works better then N97.... My phone was with their repair team for almost a month as firmware issue, camera flash was constantly on despite switching the phone off (on connecting the battery it would start), the camera quality was soo bad and its settings never responded; you login to facebook and cannot logout, the phone gets hangs in between, the swipe doesnt work sometimes when you try to answer the call, while loading applications or widgets the screen goes black... I have set the main internet connection point to be my WLAN but sometimes it automatically switches to "Data Package" by the service provider which I have not made as an access point and clearly defined WLAN (lost all my credit due to this).... once back in the WLAN area the phone does not search and connect to it by default and the other net applications like news, weather, etc does not connect unless I reset the phone.
Its been two months since I bought this phone with one month being with Nokia for repair work (infact they swapped the whole phone) but did not replace it... Yeah finally can someone tell me how to delete the email headers from the mailbox... it never deletes and hoped this would have been resolved by the new firmware as per Nokia service people...
I have had HTC phones - my god what a phone it was and never had to these issues esp with WLAN as it used to automatically scan and update information..
Exhausted and mentally tortured by Nokia N97 and time taken to repair the phone but still no difference.... should have gone for HTC Pro2
P.S - Nokia please recall this stupid **bleep** machine of yours and replace it with a new one or refund customers back their money...

"Many users of the N97 have been reporting various system based errors and bugs that have been plaguing the device since its release date. There are even entire forums dedicated to the bugs and problems of N97 users –a testament to how unstable the system is. The big blow came as both mobile carrier Vodafone UK and distributer Electronista have stopped offering the device to customers. Electronista now redirects buyers to the more stable N97 Mini and Vodafone no longer lists the device."

  • Disappointed from Nokia N97

HI i purchases a Nokia N97 about a month or two ago. i picked the white version and at the same time my dad picked the black version. over this past month i had so many problems with it such as shutting off for no reason quitting applications for no reason, having a black screen for a few second, etc.
i went to the Nokia Flagship store and they took my phone to diagnose it. They replaced some vibration sensor which did not help at all and my phone kept on having all of those problems. Yesterday i went to the store and they replaced my phone in a new one, now this phone is also messed up. most of the time it gives me this error message: "disk error - cannot complete write retry or data will be lost"
I'm really getting sick of this phone because I'm paying alot more for it since i need to drive to the store and waste so much of my time.
As i said before my dad has the black version and has non of these problems and errors he's runs smoothly.

Look, if your phone’s a lemon take it back and demand replacement. If the store will only offer to fix it, contact Nokia (your phone is still under warranty) and see if they will replace it for you. If they offer to repair, accept the offer if you want to keep the phone (they will send you a UPS label for return, so you won’t have to drive to the store again). If you don’t, sell it and count your losses and move on. There are options for you if you wish to use them. Sometimes life isn’t simple. The people here that kindly offer tech support and help for all manner of problems do so as a kindness and willingness to help others. They are not employees of Nokia, just people like you and me. The only difference between them and you, to paraphrase John Lennon, is that to them there are no problems, only solutions. This is a support forum, not a mope forum. If, as you say, you came here with absolutely no desire to receive help from forum members, but merely to gripe, then I would suggest you find a place more suitable to unload your angst and self-pity.

  • Add contact detail to a message Nokia N97 Mini

Hi, I bought a Nokia N97 Mini in January, and I still can't resolve this problem: I don't know how to add a contact detail to the body of any text message. I have had several Nokia phones, for years, and I remember that if you wanted to send a text message, lets say to a friend and this friend asked you for someone else's phone number in order to send it you just start a new message> insert content> contact detail, then you just chose the contact you'd like to send the phone number of and that's it. Now, I can't figure out how to do it with my new phone. Sorry if I sound silly, it's just that I don't know where else to look for. Thnx!

    Hi,
I beleive you are using MS Outlook.
    Try the following workaround.
    Manual sync
Open Nokia Ovi Suite--> Sync--> Sync option--> Uncheck the sync automatically everytime you connect the device.
    Then Sync--> Sync now--> Contact,
Repair the "pst" and the "ost" Outlook files as in the following location.
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\SCANPST.EXE
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\SCANOST.EXE
Right click the above mentioned exe file and 'Run' it.
    NOTE
It's adviced to take a back- up of the user's Outlook folders to avoid any loss of information.
Check with Microsoft support pages for more information.

The only reason I would think of for such a design is if the engineers actually designed it in such a way that, the side key you're talking about actually turns the screen off which saves energy and makes your battery last longer.
N97 users are welcome to confirm if this is true. I don't know much about the power consumption of touch screens but this theory of mine makes sense to me atleast

  • NOKIA N97 SYSTEM ERROR AND MENU NOT OPENING

I have a N97 which is a far cry from the N900. Anyhow, of recent when I try to access the menu a message pops up saying "System error" - so, I cannot access any of the other functions through Menu and, quite honestly, I don't know how else to access the menu. Any ideas or suggestions to resolve this would be appreciated!

Apart from loss of data I would probably suggest carrying out a "hard reset" upon this device, which is chronically short of phone memory:http://mynokiablog.com/2009/07/18/how-to-hard-reset-your-nokia-n97/
