  • Red light coming from my audio output, speakers not working

I read somewhere about wiggling a toothpick around in there, but that didn't work, any other ideas.
This happened after I had a 1/4 to 1/8 converter plugged in there to use a little mini amp.
I've lost the use of speakers.
    headphones work fine
I think the optical input is still reading as if something is plugged in. Not sure if there's something in my system I need to switch, or if I need to take it in, have the jack opened up and replaced

Just to rule out the obvious make sure your mute switch (F3) is not on. If your 'switch is stuck' you would see a red light coming from the headphone port.
Double check your Sys Prefs - Sound settings ...if things still are not working you might try a SMC reset followed by a Pram reset that would restore your orig. settings.

  • HT2494 the sound won't work on my Macbook pro  the headphone port actually has a red light coming from it

Can not get sound on my Computer.  The headphone port actually has a red light coming from it.  Help

Insert a headphone jack and remove it and see if the light goes out. The red light indicates the switch didn't switch from head phone to your Mac's speakers. Some folks have actually used a match stick to undo the switch.

This is perfectly normal. You can run an optical digital out this way. You need a mini-toslink adapter like this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini-TOSLINK
Then you can set the digital out as default (instead of Speakers) to run audio to a surround sound reciever via optical fiber.

  • Weird noises coming from MBA

I just went to copy something hitting "command" and "c" and there was some weird screeching sound coming from my MBA. A few seconds after that, there were a few "bloop" sounds coming from it and then it stopped. Anyone else encounter this? It may be worth noting that when the screeching sounds occurred, there was a loading icon on the arrow pointer.

My MBA's hard drive (not solid) makes a fast clicking sound; occurs maybe every few hours. It doesn't happen when you'd expect, it's not during at the startup of a program or opening a large document. Just happens randomly.
    Is this normal?

  • Light coming from screen under lock button (iPhone 5)

I can see a sliver of light coming thru in a crevice between the screen and the metal band, right below the sleep/wake button. Anyone else see that?

Keep me posted on the issue as it progresses compurhythm78. I've read on other websites I've found via Google search that people with this problem have taken it to the Genius Bar at the Apple store and they have replaced their phone with a new one as this is a common hardware problem with the iPhone 5. I wanted to make this post on here as this is more of a credible site to see if this problem would be covered under the warranty or if anyone knew how to fix it (if that's even possible). It's not like it's a huge problem with the phone, but I use the lock button quite often and it's just really annoying having to hit the button multiple times to get it function.

  • Display Problem - Light Coming From Top

    Hello,
So I recently purchased a 27" iMac, and have noticed a display problem when viewing in full screen mode. Its only an issue if there is black along the top of the screen (such as the black bars when watching a movie or trailer). When there is black along the top, you can see some white light kind of bleeding in from the top edge - kind of all the way along (very narrow), but more pronounced at certain spots. I browsed the forums, but couldn't find anything that seemed real similar (though there are a number of reports of a yellow tinge on the bottom).
I guess I"m just wondering if this is a common LED problem - or if my display may be defective, and I should take it back.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Pullo
There has been a few reports, but nothing wide spread.

If it's noticeable, then most definitely take it back.

  • Weird Sound coming from safari?

Help me, I have a 2010 13" macbook pro with os x mountain lion,  and sometimes when I have safari open, a weird chicken squawking, bongo drum sound comes on. This sound happens on any website, not just one particular website. It is scaring me and I think I might have a virus, can anyone help me? I've had it for about 3 months now :/ It just happens out of the blue and to stop it, I have to close the window I am on, on safari! I am very very worried as I love my macbook to bits <3
    thanks in advance xx

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Weird sound coming from above F1-F3 keys - locks computer up

I just got my MacBook Pro back from Apple and they did not fix the problem below (although, they fixed a number of small things, thankfully, like the bad speakers, crash from sleep, flaking keyboard paint, etc.). I am taking it back in today and need to figure out how to best describe this problem or point them in the right direction, since it was not addressed.
About a week ago, my MacBook Pro starting making this weird sound above the F1-F3 keys, something resembling a loud hard drive accessing sound or a sparking sound. When this happens, the cursor turns into the colored spinning beach ball, locking up my ability to interact with my computer. This continues for maybe 5-10 minutes. Then the sound stops, and the beachball goes away. But, it could come back anytime. This makes working on my computer virtually impossible as there are times it happens 3-4 times in an hour. It comes randomly, at any time. It seems some likely if the computer has been running for awhile and is overheating, but it has been known to come on bootup sometimes, as well.
No idea what his is - I already had the Main Logic Board replaced and it didn't help, so it must be another component up there underneath the F1-F3 keys.
    Any expert advice? Thank you.

  • What to do about white, whispy smoke coming from slot where paper comes out?

After a false paper jam message (the paper was sticky from humidity and only partially left feed tray), the printer prints fine, but thin, whispy white smoke comes out with the printed sheets. I don't know if it has a smell as I have little sense of smell.
    Help!
Printer is a Laser Jet 1020 bought in 2004

This is likely water vapor (steam) from humid paper and not a cause for concern.  See the page here for information.

  • Weird noise coming from computer when 'waking up' from sleep mode

    Hi everyone,
I recently upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 - specs are in the attached photo below.
Since yesterday, when I turn on my computer, or 'wake' it up from sleep mode, it makes a strange and noticeable whining noise. I've had the computer for around two months and it has never made such noises. The noise lasts for about 1-2 seconds. Aside from that the computer is operating as usual.
I reset/shut down the computer several times and also did a PRAM reset. I have no idea what the issue may be and can't seem to find anything of relevance in the community. Should I go to an Apple Store? Is there something to be fixed or will the computer need to be replaced?
Thank you all for your time!

@Thor - I too like Acronis although one could use Windows Backup if so desired.
Sleep mode -  I use sleep mode for scheduled recording of TV shows in Windows Media Center. If I shut down, no recording.
Yea, waking up to do a recording is certainly a valid scenario.  I gave up on Windows Media Center right before they came out with an XBOX that is actually quiet and could be used as an extender.  We've been a TiVo family since those noisy XBOX days.
Regarding sleep/hibernate, I just got tired of my machines waking in the Lenovo dock and having to reset application position, screen resolutions, and all of the other crap that seems to happen to ThinkPads on a resume.  That doesn't even take into account the black screen of death or other reliability issues I've seen over the years.
I am firmly a shutdown guy now.  It's clean and I know what I get when I press the power button again.  With 15-25 second boots and fast I/O, the reliability outweighs the perceived time savings.
We haven't discussed what might be corrupting the original posters file system.  That is disconcerting.  Sounds like a Crucial M4 firmware issue.  If that is the culprit, there's going to be hell to pay on the mSATA M4 based Ultrabooks assuming it has the same bug.

  • Internal speakers suddenly will not unmute.  My headphones work, and there is a red light coming from the headphone jack

I put my volume on mute a few weeks ago, and I don't know if I have used it again since then or not, but now the volume will not unmute.  There is a red light glowing out of the headphone jack.  Sound through headphones works.  I've tried updating and restarting my computer.  Help?

    No, not forceful - gentle.
    A PRAM-reset might also help:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Try this a few times.
