Nokia Phones - Windows 8.1, Firmware and Future

Lots of posts about Windows phones and the Windows Phone 8.1 update and firmware update(s) that are not happening for Verizon customers.    The talk on the net is Verizon has discontinued the Lumia Icon, so I called Verizon to find out.   The rep. I spoke to could not/would not confirm if the Lumia Icon was discontinued.    When I asked about the status of the Windows Phone 8.1 update (and firmware updates), he again could not/would not provide a status, or any kind of time frame.   I expressed to him my concern that I have a Verizon Lumia Icon that is about 1 month old, and potentially will no longer be receiving updates.  I also told him there are many other Verizon customers with Windows phones with the same concerns.
Still - no substantive response.    Can't speak for the rest of you, but this concerns me.   Other carriers have updated their Windows phones to 8.1 and current firmware, but not Verizon.   Do I now have a phone that will *never* be updated, and am locked into a 2 year contract !?   Verizon is playing the silent game with us.
On a more positive note, I received an email from T-Mobile today asking me to come back.   They said they would buy out my current wireless carrier plan.   I will give Verizon a little more time to let their customers know what the future is with the Windows phones (and specifically the Icon), but I will not wait forever.   I will dump Verizon and go to a carrier that is actively supporting Windows phones.

I contacted support myself today, and this is what I got:
My name is Kim, how may I assist you?
Visitor: Hello! I have the Lumia Icon and I was wondering if you guys have ANY idea when we can expect to get the Cyan update? And furthermore, the Denim update that we are supposed to get before the end of the year?
Kim: Good Afternoon!
Kim: Great question! We do not have an idea of when the software updates will be made available by the phone manufacturer. You can definitely reach out to Nokia and see when the updates would be available for download from their site or when they would be pushed out to your phone once they have been tested.
Visitor: Really? They are saying it's being held up by Verizon.....
Kim: I would be more than happy to get a link from the manufacturer's site and then put it here in to the chat for you.
Kim: We do test it before they release it, however the software does come from the manufacturer for the phone
Kim: >>>Click Here<<<
***if you click this link and go to Nokia's website, you find this:
Latest software release for Nokia Lumia Icon is 1028.3566.1417.0047
The availability of this update may depend on your network service provider. To check for updates, on your phone, tap Settings -> phone update.
Kim: Here is a link to the manufacturer's site
Kim: What else may I take a look at with you today?
Visitor: Even on their website it says that it is dependent upon your service provider. Does this mean since you guys don't know anything we are probably just never getting it since you don't plan to continue selling the Icon?
Kim: We complete the testing for the software and then provide our results to the manufacturer per the information that was provided by our network engineers
Kim: As far as the information that I have available to me, the software is then sent back to the manufacturer in order for it to be released to the devices and made available on the manufacturer website.

Before updating your Nokia's firmware you should check that the newer version does not break Bluetooth and iSync abilities.
From the many reports on these and other forums, it seems people who have recently updated their Nokia phones firmware have found it impossible to get their phone and Mac to communicate.

  • Phone not working after firmware update for nokia ...

I tried updating my nokia 5800 today when the new firmware was released. i have already updated my other phone including another 5800. But when I updated the firmware of another 5800 (my 5800 through nokia software updater from pc/laptop), after the nokia updater application said that the update was successful, my phone showed the nokia logo with the new firmware version. It's supposed to reboot automatically and continue as normal but after waiting for like 15 minutes, my phone's still not turning on and still showed on the screen that the phone was not connected. That's when I unplugged it off from the USB cable and tried to turn it on, but it will just vibrate for a few seconds and then nothing! It won't turn on or work! I've tried to search on how to fix this problem but to no avail.. please help me.. is my phone going to work again?

    What's the best option?

I'd love to help you find the best option, beahah. If your phone is 4G, it is already unlocked for international use, and can be used with a local SIM card. If you'd like to keep using it under your Verizon account, you can check out our Global options here: http://vz.to/1oVFiwM

  • Why are there no plans for BlackBerry? How are Android and Nokia phones priority over BlackBerry's? Big mistake no? You're excluding a big sector, please advise

I just want to know whey Mozilla is excluding a big sector of the mobile phone community. There are so many more BlackBerry users at least here in the US than Android and Nokia phone users. Please advise why I have to be excluded from using my favorite browser on my BlackBerrry Torch 9800.

We do have plans to create a BlackBerry version of our iOS app, Firefox Home. For details, see http://blog.mozilla.com/mobile/2010/09/28/firefox-home-looking-to-the-future/

  • How to remove Nokia Phone Browser from Windows Exp...

    Hello :-)
This is registry hacking and your lawn's going to curl up and die right in front of you if you do that. OK?
OK -- if you're happy with that, here's information, based on experience with Windows XP Pro SP2 and Nokia PC Suite 6.7 Release 22. It will probably work with other versions of Windows and PC Suite.
It should be possible remove Nokia Phone Browser from Windows Explorer by going to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideMyComputerIcons\
and creating a Dword Value named
    {416651E4-9C3C-11D9-8BDE-F66BAD1E3F3A}
    with data of 1.
    That didn't work for me so I went to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\ and changed the name of {416651E4-9C3C-11D9-8BDE-F66BAD1E3F3A}
(by adding a - on the end) to
    {416651E4-9C3C-11D9-8BDE-F66BAD1E3F3A}-.
That worked and it's easy to undo the change.

This is incorrect. You can turn iMessage off and unregister your phone number from the service.  Actually getting that done, however, is difficult.

  • Non-Nokia phones and OviStore

Hi everyone! I want to congratulate the people who worked hard for ovi store release. I know it will be a success in the future if planned correctly.
In the near future, can non-nokia symbian based phones be compatible with ovi store?
I and other people would greatly appreciated compatibility for samsung, lg and other symbian phone  brands.
I soon will purchased a phone with similar N97 specs (hd) and would loved to used ovi-store.
Advantages of supporting non nokia phones in Ovi store includes:
Greater market audience - more revenue
Greater developer offerings  - (more appz) more revenue
Secured future growth for release of next symbian phones
Symbian OS more appealing to phone manufacturers (vs other phone OS)- more adoption more revenue
There are many more reasons to support non nokia phones in ovi store, but in general, its what Nokia and Symbian needs to solidify their possition in the market.

    psychomania wrote:
Not 100% sure but using common sense can you really imagine that other manufacturers will allow nokia's store to be available on their phones?
Widsets was always offered as cross-platform.
Also, from a commercial point of view, it might benefit all manufacturers that have such a store. It could encourage more content providers to take part if they are able to offer a wider range of apps in one place, the competition for the stores is to provide the best environment to encourage content providers to choose them over another.
Although seems logical to lock people into your own service, by offering more choice to the consumer you make them more likely to choose your product before they even consider buying the add-ons. You'll note that most of the places where you can buy a mobile phone don't offer just a single brand. The real key to commercial success is the customer's freedom to choose, not by trying to dominate the customer's use of additional products and services, this would be a turn-off for many people.

I have the iPhone 4, and yesterday I synced my photos onto iTunes, but now I have albums on my phone that cannot be deleted, and there is not an option to delete the items in the albums individually... How do I get rid of these unwanted albums? Using Windows 7.

If you used iTunes to get the photos on the phone, then use the same iTunes and uncheck the music you don't want and do another sync.

  • I am having trouble transfering music and pics from my old Nokia phone to Iphone 4s

Why won't my iphone 4s recognize my old phone so that I can transfer pics and music through bluetooth? It just keeps telling me it is not paired with the device but I can't figure out how to do so. The Nokia phone recognizes the iphone just fine.

Connect you rdevice to your computer/iTunes.  Go to the Photos tab. Choose to have no photos synced over and then 'Apply' the changes.

After updating my Iphone 4s to os 7.1.1 from 7.1 over the air, my phone went into recovery mode. Yet when I try to restore it with Itunes on my windows 7 laptop it says the network connection has been reset. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network is active, or try again later. My phone has the itunes logo and charger symbol on it, as well as an arrow pointing at the Itunes logo. After holding the sleep button down or even doing the hard reset the same screen comes up on my phone regardless of whether it is plugged in or not to my computer. I have turned my computer off and on again. It is plugged in and charging as it's battery life is very short. I also reset my modem and the same error message pops up. The only option on my computer when my phone is plugged in is to restore it. My firewall also allows Itunes through it. I have literally tried everything I know being someone who knows very little about technology. I also do not want to hear about how the update worked for other people. My phone has been in recovery mode for 5 hours at least now so it will just make me more frustrated if a bunch of people post about how the update worked for them.

You may need to try this More than Once...  Be sure to Follow ALL the Steps...

  • If you're having problems updating firmware and have Windows Media Player 11 B

I've seen a number of problems with people updating their firmware with WMP installed and it turns out that's the problem. WMP has a bug in it that will not allow the firmware update to recognize the player. So, here's what to do to roll back to a previous version:
These instructions will only work for Windows XP
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to perform the following procedure.
. Disconnect any portable music or video devices that might be attached to your computer.
    2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    3. In the Category View of Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program.
    4. Click Windows Media Player , and then click Remove.
If Windows Media Player is not displayed in the list of currently installed programs, then try the following:
. At the top of the list, select the Show updates check box.
    2. In the Windows XP - Software Updates section, click Windows Media Player , and then click Change/Remove.
    5. In each of the two confirmation dialog boxes that appear, click OK.
    6. When the rollback process is complete (it might take several minutes), click Restart.
    7. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    8. In the Category View of Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program.
    9. Click Windows Media Format Runtime, and then click Remove.
If Windows Media Format Runtime is not displayed in the list of currently installed programs, then try the following:
. At the top of the list, select the Show updates check box.
    2. In the Windows XP - Software Updates section, click Windows Media Format Runtime, and then click Change/Remove.
If you installed a non-US English version of Windows Media Player , the instructions in the dialog boxes that are mentioned in steps 9, 0, and might appear in English.
    0. In the first confirmation dialog box that appears, click OK.
. In the second confirmation dialog box that appears, select the Do you want to continue with the rollback? check box, and then click OK.
    2. When the rollback process is complete (it might take several minutes to complete), click Restart.
    3. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    4. In the Category View of Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program.
    5. Click Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack .0.0, and then click Remove.
    6. Follow the instructions that appear in the Software Update Removal Wizard.
If the Wudf0000 confirmation dialog box appears, click Yes to continue. When the software removal process is complete (it might take several minutes to complete), click Finish.
If you are still having problems and all else fails, do a System Restore to before WMP was installed.
*Note: If you remove Windows Media Player and the Windows Media Format Runtime, and then encounter error C00D27D ("A problem has occurred in the Digital Rights Management component. Contact Microsoft product support, you might be able to resolve the problem by installing the Windows Media Format 9.5 Runtime. For information about installing the Runtime, in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, see article 8922, "Update for Windows Media Digital Rights Management-enabled players."
**You might not be able to roll back to a previous version of the Player if the hidden folder $NtUninstallwmp$ is deleted from your computer. Some non-Microsoft programs (such as CCleaner) delete this folder in an attempt to remove unwanted files from your computer.
    More information here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...ionofthePlayer
Some people have found these instructions to be a solution to the "Player Not Connected" Error when trying to update the firmware. (Your mileage may vary)
Note to Mods: This would make a nice sticky

OK. I've been having this problem and have probably read every post there is on the net concerning it. But it doesn't seem to be only a Media Player problem. I was only running Media Player 0 when it happened to me. I found the solution somewhere, I can't remember where, but it worked for me and it was easy.
    Here's what you do:
    . Download BOTH ZenXtra_PCFW_LA__20_08.exe and enXtraP4SAudible_PCFW_LB_2_0_03.exe
    2. Connect the Zen Xtra to your PC.
    3. Run ZenXtra_PCFW_LA__20_08.exe. When the window comes up and says that your device is not connected DON'T do ANYTHING! Just leave it there.
    4. Now run ZenXtraP4SAudible_PCFW_LB_2_0_03.exe
    5. It told me that I already had this version on my device did I still want to load it's I said yes and it went through the whole upgrade and now it works fine.

You are all kidding about this right?
Really, you do all know it's ENTIRELY down to product placement - ie: paid for advertising - rather than any "cool" factor, don't you?
I just can't believe there are intelligent people out there who still don't know that. I mean: why would a high profile pop star or the producer of a multi-million dollar movie feature a (usually entirely irrelevant) piece of technology in their product for free when they could get hundreds of thousands of dollars to do it?
It's not even like it's subtle anymore: have you seen how much product placement Apple have bought in Californication? Every other scene has someone using a powerbook or an iPod or at least talking about it.
Favourite line from the last one I saw: "Do you know (some **bleep**py album)? I'll gift it to you on your iPod."
