Nokia's Symbian Promise

I wonder whether the N97 is included in this promise or is will it be for fourth coming releases only.
Wasn't a Nokia web link!

Nokia N97 Black v21.0.045 RM-505 Code-0585162 (handset No 3)

Doubt it - the n97 does not have much under the hood to do anything with.  Also keep in mind it is more about driving investment capital than delivering, you might recall this time last year the amazing n97 being announced (leaked) and wow what a disaster that was.
Besides in the last week there has been leaks that Nokia is going to ditch their mobile ops, they are going to move N series device to maemo - dude, Nokia is all over the board these days.  I've lost confidence in them.
One thing them seem to be really good at is suing other companies - its almost gotten out of control, if that is how they plan to grow revenue, well they've lost me as a 15 year customer - I'd rather they focus on making a decent phone (and me happy) than being a bunch of cry baby patent trolls.
Just my 2 cents, and I hope they prove me wrong.
I love my purple screen, 1/2 day battery, sketchy touch screen and $800 price tag - I call it my Lumia 900

  • Nokia N8 Symbian Belle - A downgrade of sophistica...

    Dear Sirs,
I am writing to you in regards of the latest Belle update for Nokia N8.
I am deeply disappointed with some of the features and i would like to bring those to your attention. Dont get me wrong, as an update, Belle its nice and looks very beautiful on the phone, however, some things must be pointed out.
    1. The notifications widget. WHY was this removed completely and made the phone less sophisticated?? (and please dont reply back to me as i saw in other posts, stating that it has been replaced with the drop down. Pls read further before replying and bare in mind that i already know with what it has been replaced!) I mean listen.... i own an N8 (550 Euro mobile phone!) and my wife owns a nokia X3 (60 Euro phone!)... with the current update of Belle, on the N8 when i receive a message i get the cheap looking like, old style notification on "1 new message received" (without stating from who i received the message before i open the message)... with the notification widget we had on Anna however everything was more sophisticated, it actually made the phone look More sophisticated as well, as it stated on the widget from who (e.g. John) you received a message or a missed call... on the X3 of my wife, is States that, it states from who you you received the message...I liked that and made the phone look different from many other phone and as i have observed from a lot of posts, Many people liked the notifications widget and believed the same as well... therefore we reached a point where cheaper phones now look more sophisticated than smartphones??  i know that when you make new software you wanna change and update everything for certain marketing reasons, however in my humble opinion that does not mean that you should also go ahead and downgrade the sophistication of the phone just for the sake of changing extremely nice stuff in the name of updating... there are certain things that you should be left as they were if not need update...
    2. The fact that the widgets have been made all coulurful and "comic" like is a good thing on one hand but bad on the other. (e.g calendar, mail) On what basis was this done? I mean i am a lawyer, and i used those widgets and were very inportant to me on a daily basis, and i used them daily. On Symbian Anna, they were all very nice looking (glassy and black) and more professional. The fact that i updated the phone now and the widgets are so childishly designed and driven (colourful comic like calendar and email widget etc), makes one very uncomfortable in their use. (i mean think for instance a situation of me sitting next to a client and checking up my incoming mail on the widget that looks like poor unprofessional, childish email like hotmail, yahoo mail etc) I mean dont get me wrong, you should have included the new ones, but you should have also included the old glassy looking like widgets of symbian Anna (since i am certain you have them somewhere saved ni your databases) in the update and let the user decide which ones to use... you dont just simply proceed and make so many radical changes when you know that these kind of phones are also (and probably by majority) used by professionals.
Further, the old clock digital widget with the profile all in one was very nice and better looking like for some of us and shouldnt have been removed.......
    3. About the screensaver screen. My comments here are interelated with my above comments regarding the notifications widget. Firtsly, i dislike the fact that on the screensaver screen, i only get the message and missed call signs when i get one, but there is no number next to them stating now how many messages or missed calls i have received like it used to be on Symbian Anna (its one thing to have 10 missed calls and its another to have solely one. i mean think of this scenario: when i am in an important meeting, i only take the phone out of my pocket to see HOW MANY missed calls i have. i dont sit with clients there and check who called isnt it? so if i saw i had 10 missed calls in one hour then i would know its an emergency and interrupt - maybe my child had an accident or something)
Further, the clock on the screensaver shouldnt be made with this dotty white colour, that looks like or seems as if the phone is about to die completely - makes the phone look cheap and unsophisticated as well. The colour of the clock should  be solid crystal white as it used to be on Symbian Anna...
    Thanks
    YK

I too am having the same issue with only hotmail. Looking at Microsoft forums, Nokia users aren't the only ones. MS have done some sort of 'upgrade' to their exchange servers which is causing the issue.  They are sorting it out but goodness knows how long this is going to take. My emails sometimes come in but then on the next sync they disappear. The gripe that alot of people have is that phone manufacturers apparently hadn't been told of this 'upgrade' and for me, my additional gripe is that I have been a Nokia user since 1996 and over the last 1.5 I am getting increasingly frustrated with Nokia anyway and waiting for them to sort out some ongoing issues I have had since September last year, now this as there is this ' I don’t use active exchange as I don’t want to sync my contacts or calendar this way and prefer to use other ways/apps to sync this info. As there is and apparent ‘partnership' between Nokia & Microsoft, how come none of us users had a clue it was going to happen and what steps we should take for a smooth transition.

  • Nokia 701 Symbian Belle Widget problem

when i see previews of themes on nokia store, there are some widgets that i don't have on my Nokia 701 (latest software update)...for example the (3G On/Off) widget and some others too, is there any place where i can get these widgets ?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

These widgets are in the latest symbian Belle firmware that comes to S^3 devices like N8, C7 ... in february.
I think newer devices like your 701 will also get a software update of Belle.

  • Nokia 500 symbian belle w/ NFC support?

i wonder if i upgrade to symbian belle on my nokia 500, will it able to add NFC support? TY
    Nokia user since 2004.
    Owned 3310, 1100, 3300, 6600, 6300, 5310, 5130, N79, 5800.
Owns: 6230 (still alive) and 500....
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well the Nokia "Store" seems to think that the Nokia 500 has "NFC SUPPORT"... Please take a look at this link:
It clearly states there the folllowing:
     - "Simply perform the NFC handshake with another Nokia 500, 600 or 700 to unlock content."
So I don't know if whoever posted it up was trying to mislead people who own the Nokia 500 into buying their application and make them think that the software will "enable" NFC on the device.... Or just a "typo"?
It probably was a marketing strategy..... "me thinks"...

  • Nokia 701 - Symbian Deserve this?

    Please note
It seems a rather illogical and questionable step by Nokia not to grant the portion of their customers that completely appreciate the purity of the Symbian platform with a fundamental upgrade in aspect of the 'screen size' given.
    X700 released prior offers 4inch, while the 701 with a 1Gb equivalent Processor, 512 RAM gets a 3.5inch? It's a good question?

jimmyireland, I respect your prediction that a new line up of phones running belle will hopefully be released, I honestly hope so.
Your right though, not everybody wants a 'bigger' screen. Good and fair enough call. However, Nokia is releasing 3 phones, 600, 700 and 701. All have 1GHz processors, but why out of the 3 releases, is there no consideration given to those that would prefer a larger screen? We're talking about larger screen sizes but in all respect to NOKIA, we're not talking MASSIVE, we're only comparing it with most of the other smartness out there available, which most come equipped with at least a 4inch screen!
Fair enough again, they say the 700 is one of their most compact and 'eco-friendly' smartphones, so OK, they are concentrating rather hard on achieving a smaller package BUT, to date, why is there not a phone out there that offers most of the capabilities of the N8, C7, etc, with 1GHz processor with a 'fair' screen size?
Since the release of the N8, you would expect considerable progress. Yes, with the Belle and software enhancements, they have achieved an extraordinarily level of accuracy on their QWERTY keyboard, considering a 3.5inch does still allow a user to quite comfortably type using two fingers holding an N8 upright BUT, in comparison again with the IPhone and many other examples, a 4inch offers much more level of accuracy and usability in regards to to this aspect.
Also in regards to camera's, I have another question. Has there since, the release of the N8, been some form of formal agreement not to pursue smartphones dominating the market regarding digital cameras? I mean who wants to pay hundreds of dollars for a digital camera when a few more hundreds could land you a smartphone that can do ALL!
Is this the reason the 12megapixel hasn't been adopted on later releases or were there just mere issues regarding the 12? Rather, will we see Nokia specifically in this case, pursuing on improving the camera qualities of their smartphones or is 8megapixel the new foundation?
Again I want to make clear. X7 released after, has a larger screen, much nicer but same specifications. It was clear a more powerful processor would be required to give the user complete comfort, specifically with the quality of of FLASH and JAVA on the native browser, which apparently does consume and require a lot of RAM to operate properly. There were all types of 'freezing' issues, 'lag', or just complete malfunction, since then I should say has been more than rectified with optimal software improvements BUT the question is still there, WHY?
A phone with the capabilities of the new ' beautifully evolved' Symbian Belle platform, along with a 1GHz processor, 512 RAM AND A ****4INCH**** screen would put it right up there as surely 'dominant' competitor with the IPhone 4, AND without much hesitation in my words, most likely would surpass the capabilities of the upcoming Iphone 5, whatever that is!
So again why is Nokia creating this MASSIVE problem? Choices, where is the choice everybody should HAVE with a 4inch screen!?

  • Nokia N8 / Symbian^3 not up to the job compared to...

I purchased Nokia N8 couple of weeks ago. Expectring that it will be really good and transformed ways of doing things however it is very disappointing that it is still lacking so many features and things which makes it easy to use compared to iOS/Android.
    1) Many Apps for iOS / Android which are also Free. Long list of apps which is not same for Ovi Store.
    2) Other than Typical UI elements, which are typical of Nokia, Nothing different in UI elements.
    3) Symbian^3 still ways behind other OS in market. Slow in response and lag in the Apps.
    4) Still no One touch menu access like iOS and Androids. Have to touch/tap many many times in the menus to get the job done like Messaging, Texting etc.
    5) Camera still have high Noise level however images are good quality.
    6) Games load slow. e.g NFS, Pro Golf still gets stuck in response many times.
    7) Good part is Symbian^3 is more finger friendly than other Touch screen Nokia Devices on Old Symbian Platform.
    8) Widgets, Shortcuts , Customisation home screens are really good features but have limitations.
    9) Connectivity still requires lots of improvements. Each app decides it's own way of connecting. Not like iOS/ANdroid. where if you are connected or known Wi-Fi Available it will only attempt to connect that connection. Some apps, Browser decides automatically to pick up mobile data over Wi-Fi etc.
Bluetooth is no good either. any Bluetooth headphones you use with this including NOkia's own, Not giving consistent connection and while listening music etc. it keeps breaking up the sound.
    10) Texting , if you select "Save Sent items" NO. It still keeps saving them many times.
    11) No Straight forward one tap menus in Messaging / Calling where you select your contact and you can straight make Call /Text. Or when you Type Text, unlike other OS like Blackberry OS, iOS, Android you have to tap many times to reach desired contact/function.
    12) Camera quality , HDMI, USB on the GO are really good features
    13) Honestly Symbian OS still requires lot work which will make it very light weight OS and gives you Fast/Smooth interaction with OS/UI.
Keep up the good work Nokia.
    Thanks.

I hope Nokia stick with the Symbian 3 what they are using in my Nokia N8.  I don't want my phone to be out of date after a few months with newer phones using different Symbian versions.
I hope they just update this version so I can use mine for many years. If they go for a newer version, then there won't be much support for the people that bought these phones, and that would be terrible.
I had the Nokia N82 before this phone and it was great because there were many phones out using the same Symbian platform. That mean there were heaps of APPS and GAMES around for the life of my phone which was about 3 years.
I really hope Nokia just UPDATE this version of Symbian instead of bringing anohter new one out, otherwise I would be very dissapointed as I just purchsed my phone a few days ago.
If they do do this, I think I will be going to a more stable company that use the same stuff and is very popular like Iphone. I bought this phone because of the camera and features, plese don't let me regret the decision nokia.

  • Nokia 500 Symbian Belle?

Why has postponed the launch of Symbian Belle nokia 500? So large are the problems that we are still delay?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Nokia Belle is specifically tailored to each phone model, including the  Nokia 500. Due to technical specifications, Nokia Belle for Nokia 500 differs to other Nokia Belle phones in the following aspects:
Nokia 500 with Nokia Belle only supports 4 homescreens.
Nokia 500 does not support NFC.
FM transmitter and widget are not supported in Nokia 500.
Nokia 500 includes Nokia Maps 3.06 instead of 3.08.
Additionally, Nokia 500 will get Angry Birds with the Nokia Belle update. This update is expected to launch on Feb 15th.

  • Will WP7 able to Overcome Nokia's Symbian Lackings...

I m rili interrested to buy one wp7 of nokia...coz i have seen symbians r going down and down...dey have superfasts like belle...anna...^3...bt dis arent able 2 fight agaist android on iphones os...its really wierd dat how Easily Android got the number 1 mobile platform...frm nokia...i want something from nokia Dat will Heal us like samsung galaxy S II...iphone 4...i am dreaming like such fone of nokia 4 dat i will be in a long line....of buyers...so im just excited and savinG my Money for WP7 or a Heal!

I have looked into this and the answer is NO.
Present high end devices have hardware specifically designed for Symbian^1. Some of the latest devices, such as the N97mini and new X series, have the hardware capacity to run a basic Symbian^3 but again they are designed for Symbian^1 with upgradability to a basic Symbian^2 and they would not work well with Symbian^3.
The first Symbian^3 specific hardware devices will be available later this year, and the transition by Nokia to the iPhone and Android, (and now Win mobile 7 series) user experience will not be completed until 2011 and the Symbian^4 capable devices.
Its interesting to note that from the youtube Nokia conversations video, the clarity for long term development of high end devices is not clear. Others are now taking the lead in innovation. Nokia seem to be hedging their bets as to which OS will become prominent in 2012 -  it may be Symbian  or it may be MeeGo. As to usage, obviously there is a device development route that leads to a focus on new high end devices rather than lower end handsets, but again what these will be (as well as phones) is unclear.

  • Nokia and Symbian support

Nokia have abandoned City Lens for Symbian.. This is what i think!

First i got the Lumia 800 fine then an 900 also good and Nokia declare some some day after that WP8.0 not avail for those phone's.
Next i purchase the avesome Nokia808 pure wiew and being very proud about the camera and also Belle! That 808 give me just what i wanted and i did never miss the LUMIA. It was hard to find behind all LUMIA on the nokia mainpage web but finally i got it. Thanks for that.
Now i read that support will end and some software's is abandomed for symbian.
Well Nokia Do you really think i will get any more Lumia from you. Im very dissapointed about the fast going to kill all Symbian and play out all on one card simple card that you never know if it will go well.
As shareholder and i lose some money also for that so i can ensure you Nokia that im close to give up your product now.

Before i upgraded to belle software i was able to put a film on my usb dongle then using the adapter that comes with every n8 ( which turns your mini usb connection into a usb) plug it into my phone. Then i would use the av or the hdmi lead to connect it to my t.v and play the film through my phone on to my t.v screen. Since i have updated to the new belle software it doesnt work anymore the pictures there but no sound! • Nokia N8 Symbian Belle - Mobile Data Auto Connecti...

I have recently updated my n8 to symbian belle and I am having trouble in disabling the mobile data. For some reason the 3G connection icon keeps on beeping in the menu bar. It keeps on trying to connect to packet data even though i have disabled  the mobile data from the menu bar. I also disable it from the connection and admin settings but its still trying to connect to the 3G network all the time. It is big issue for me because the battery is only lasting about 12hours where as before it lasted almost 2 days. Also I do not have any access points for the 3G network, I only got a wifi access point on it.

i had one program which kept running on the background, i removed it now but it still trying to connect somehow. I went through all my applications also. There wasnt any given net settings. Could it be because my mobile was locked to a 3 network before and the OS version is based on the 3 network? It comes with useless apps which are net based but do not work for me because you need to have a 3 network and they cant be removed.
