Nokia to the rescue! Mobile phone giant brings fre...

London, long starved of Wi-fi hotspots, get a big boost this week. Nokia kicks off a large-scale trial of free Wi-fi in the capital, with plans for a wider roll-out early next year.
A two-month trial, in partnership with Wi-fi provider Spectrum Interactive, will operate in 12 key areas in central London, focusing on shopping centre Oxford Street and other popular locations such as Knightsbridge, Sloane Square, Victoria and Westminster, , reports AdAge magazine.
The trial is intended to help Nokia figure out usage patterns and consumer demand before the big roll-out next year . It will also promote use of Nokia's online services, principally Nokia Maps, which will shows the location of the 26 participating hotspots in case if you can't find one of the telephone boxes with the Spectrum Interactive logo, which house the access points.
The free Wi-fi is part of Nokia's "Amazing Everyday" marketing push, says the US magazine. Also in the mix: the launch of the Lumia Windows Phone in the U.K. on Nov. 16. This will be supported with a TV ad, part of a global $130 million campaign by London agency Inferno.
The spot highlights the countless small adventures hidden in ordinary daily activities, and ends with the tagline "Experience the amazing everyday. New
Nokia Lumia."
London has lagged behind other European cities such as Paris in the free Wi-fi business. In the French capital it is available in many cafes and restaurants. Starbucks offers free Wi-fi in the UK in partnership with BT - but users have to go through" a rigorous sign-up procedure to access the service," says Adage.
Nokia's free Wi-fi comes with few strings : You don't have to register; just log on to the network, accept the terms and conditions and begin browsing. Consumers will be able to pick up free Wi-fi from a radius of 50 to 100 meters from each hotspot.
In the City, The Cloud provides free Wi-fi (sponsored by Nokia) but with the Olympics next year more Wi-fi services to help visitors find their way around are clearly needed. There are negotiations to offer Wi-fi in underground stations .
John Nichols, Nokia's U.K. marketing director, said in a statement, "Nokia believes you can upgrade everyday moments to make them amazing. Providing free Wi-fi access to London commuters and visitors does just that. On-the-go internet access has become an indispensable part of modern life. We all depend on mobile to share our everyday experiences and enhance our lives."
Simon Alberga, executive chairman at Spectrum Interactive, said, It's great to be able to implement this service."

Nowadays people use their Smartphones to do banking and online purchase using credit cards. May I ask how safe are these free Wifi?

  • Not only is the iPhone 6 unlocked, but the t-mobile phones work on verizon!

if someone makes a youtube video or writes a news story about my post, this time around i really would appreciate some credit.  saying rigor mortis  from apple discussions' is good enough.
it turns out that the iPhone 6 and 6 plus model numbers #1459 and #1522 are universal. and both have the CDMA radio enabled. However, Sprint models are still separate as far as i know. i did not test Sprint. but as far as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, go , it is the EXACT same phone. i was playing around with my iPhone 6 on launch day. i wanted to see if "ask maggie" was right and the phone was locked to a specific carrier. i tried the T-Mobile and AT&T sims that i had. they do not have service.
however when i inserted my LIVE and ACTIVATED Verizon Sim into my iPhone 6 , my iPhone suddenly became a verizon iPhone. i was able to Place and Receive calls using CDMA, i was able to use DATA services, and i was able to send SMS messages. i assumed that VoLTE was not enabled. and it  was not. i assumed
that you had to buy a Verizon model to get Volte. but i was wrong. it just took a while to activate. and i did see use VoLTE in settings, for Voice and DATA
however, since the IMEI and MEID serial numbers are not listed with Verizon, you are not able to either Sign up to verizon, or to transfer service to your new iPhone 6. your service is still tied to your SIM card. and when the iPhone 6 is running and active with your sim card, your device listed on "MY Verizon" will be shown as NON VZW device and it will only show the sim card. but a pre-activated sim card pulling from another device will work in the iPhone 6.
this is just like the iPad Air and the iPad Mini Retina. the only difference between these phones is the serial number is put in some list that tells someone which
carrier it supposed to belong to, and if it is locked or not. and which sim card came with the device. other then that. there are no technical differences between them. except for sprint of course.
whenever i inserted a new sim card into the iPhone 6, it automatically got carrier settings and changed its baseband.

the iPhones 5, 5c and 5s, were all shipped with CDMA disabled in GSM iPhones. this is the first iPhone ever to come out where the CDMA radio was not disabled. that is why i posted this thread. because a lot of people assume that the CDMA is still disabled and they are repeating things from previous models of the iPhone, without bothering to check. if i have offended you by wanting to post a message so more people would know what exactly that LTE page says then I apologize. Heck, I'm seeing a lot of web pages like modern reader that are still telling people they have to wait a few months for apple to release the unlocked iPhones.
    which is totally untrue.
here is a good thread where you can see people just assuming that the CDMA was disabled. and the phones had different base bands.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=19926968&posted=1#post19926968
the iPhone 6 sees your sim card and as long as its unlocked, downloads the new baseband on the fly. i don't know if this is a new feature
with all the viral news about bend gate, i don't understand why you seem to want to criticize my positive post and suggesting that apple gives away this information. with all the bad news about bend gate and 8.0.1 bugs. its very hard for a single person like me to get a positive iPhone experience out and offer iPhone tips.
when the iPad air and iPad mini retina came out, the universal support of T-Mobile - Verizon - AT&T and even sprint (under some circumstances) was big news. but now that we have bend gate and iOS 8.0.1 and bloggers who are just copying and pasting what the other blog says. no one seems to notice that the CDMA is turned on.

  • Whats the best mobile phone for syncing to macbook?

I am about to buy a mobile phone and i want to know which one is the best, for ease of connection?

Personally, I would recommend any of the later Sony Ericsson models. Either the K800 or K610 (supported in iSync 2.4), or any of the additional models supported by iSync Phone Plugins from here.
You can see what data is synced on the page linked above. You can also use them with the Mac Address Book for SMS and Calls.

  • The new mobile phone directory

I was watching the news program on tv where the idea of a Mobile phone directory was imminent. I was given the following to opt out
08001386263 and all I get is the opening times of the 118 services.
I was also given the txt to send txt E and then 008800 the send, It comes back as a red X ,
How can we opt out of the new scheme.

I'm writing a simple web service to provide this in my last UC deployment. It will be a matter of weeks, and I'll publish it as freeware.
If you can't wait for it, here's a simple explanation :
You should create a web application (the server-side language it's on you) that returns to the client (ip phone) not HTML but the Cisco subset of XML (http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/voice/vpdd/cdd/5_0/5_0_1/ipphsv/ip503ch2.htm)
Your web app should ask on the first page the name of the contact to look for, make an ldap query, and then return the XML with the contact's data.
    Hope this helps,
    Alberto

  • Nokia 6111 - The **bleep**py phone.

Ok, this is my second 6111. The assistance guys changed me the phone because of camera light always on, strange rebootings, etc.
Now, the new 6111. It worked quite well (and i was impressed of that) since hours ago but suddenly started to reboot without any good reason. Guess what?
Putting my sim-card in another phone (i.e. my good old 7210) i've been able to discover that the cause of those rebootings is an sms prompted by my phone provider (Vo****ne) saying someone called me when i wasn't unavailable.. and the strange thing is that whenever my 6111 tries to get this sms, reboots itself!!!
I have the latest firmware version, no strange things, brand new phone.. what the hell is this all about?

hmm... unless the guy who replaces your mobile came from hell, yeah what the hell is that all about? Weirdly, huh!?!
...but since that guy replaces your mobile, it means that he is not from hell… and if he didn’t came from hell, he has only 2 places left – the “earth” and the “heaven”… but “heaven’ would not be possible this time because according to Holy Book, there is no mobile in “heaven”…. And therefore, this guy must be from earth… ahh!! What the heck…
...anyway, your problem sound like a virus… since by definitions a software viruses are small software programs that are designed to spread from system to another and to interfere with system operation. A virus might corrupt or delete data on your system, use other programs to spread itself to other system, or even erase everything on your system or simply make command like rebooting your system from time to time…Viruses can be disguised as attachments such as simple text message…
..if this is the case, the only option is to clean it with anti-virus.. and protect your mobile in future…

I have nearly the same problem, the printer discards my print job even when i have entered my email address as authorised senders.
    Details from my other post:
I sent 2 emails to the printer:
    - one is a 3 lines of text and numbers in a GIF file sent as an attachment
    - another is a jpg circuit diagram paste in a word doc sent as an attachment
both are classified as spam and refused to print. i have no email coming back saying it failed (even i have checked "Email Job Status" in ePrint Settings.
So what will this HP printer print?
How can I switch this useless spam filter off?
I have get this filter off! I need this email printing to work reliably, that is a major reason I bought this printer

The T-mobile phone is advertised to be SIM-free.  This does NOT mean unlocked.  Unlocked iPhone 6's are not yet for sale in the US.
