Non-airport recommendations?

Hi all,
Our six (or seven?) year old Airport Express seems to be on its last leg, slow speeds, weak signal, dropping connection randomly, etc. Was thinking of upgrading, but also interested in comparison shopping with a non-Apple product. If I can get something cheaper that works just as well as an Airport wireless router, that'd be great.
Any recommendations? Any routers that are great? Any that are absolutely terrible?
thanks

a [refurbished|http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC340LL/A?mco=MTc4MzI5NzM] airport extreme
basically, in order to avoid incompatibilities with other Apple gadgetry, i'd go for an Apple router any time. those refurbs (i have quite a number) are just as good as new, come with the same warranty, and are great value @ discounted prices.

Will a NAS Plugged into a Non-Airport Wireless-N Router work with TM?
I'm looking for a backup solution for my new MacBook Air and I don't want to spend $200 extra for a Time Capsule when an NAS would do the job.
    Any guidance would be appreciated.

No. TM will not backup to any NAS other than Time Capsule

  • Cannot access non Airport network

    Hi all,
I'm running a Powerbook G4, whcih connects to its home Airport wireless network with no problems. However, when I try to connect to a different non Airport wireless network I get a message saying there was a problem connecting.
The two most recent I've tried are at a relative's house. The old router didn't let me in, it has been recently changed so I though that might solve the issue but it didn't. It's a D-Link DSL 2640R, used without problems by anyone else who visits, and my Mac can see it as a network whose signal it is receiving. The password is taped to the top of the box. I tried entering this in the password box on my Mac but was denied access. Then tried with the password in quotation marks, again denied. Looked on some forums which suggested using HEX. I translated the (eight character) password into a (sixteen character) HEX key, but since my Mac needed either a 10 or 26 character HEX key, went back to the forums and found the suggestion of preceeding the HEX key with a $, # or 0x. None of this worked either.
I seemed to find lots of postings from people with the same kind of issue, does anyone have any further ideas please ?
    Thanks,
    Ivan

If its lower case, it means it can see the netwoirk but can't connect. Uppercase is connected. Thanks though, it seemed to resolve itself spontaneously

  • Can AirPort Express Extend non-Airport WiFi?

The description of the AirPort Express at:
    http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/features/sharing.html
has this footnote: "AirPort Express can extend the range only of an AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express wireless network.”
Is this literally true or just a legalistic disclaimer. Is it possible to make AE work with a Netgear or Linksys router's WiFi? Or not?
One of our user group members does not have a stable connection between her iBook G4 and a Comcast router by Netgear. This is in a townhouse with two floors between them.

Is this literally true or just a legalistic disclaimer. Is it possible to make AE work with a Netgear or Linksys router's WiFi? Or not?
Pretty much. There are only a very very few non-AirPorts that are WDS-compatible. One is the Linksys WRT54G ... and only with a specific firmware version. You can do a quick Google-search, using terms like: Linksys AirPort WDS, and find at least a dozen references.
But, this is not really any different with the other vendors as most of their equipment, if extend-able, only do so with their own.

  • Can't connect to router with non airport wireless

I try again... my Imac won't connect wireless to my router. It actually connects, Imac says everything is fine, but when I connect to the internet, the colourfull little wheel is spining for hours...and nothing shows up.
With the same settings, using Airport express, wired on the router, everytihng is working fine. I can't just switch to the other network.
    Any cue?

You have a non-apple wireles card in the IMAC. Why would you do that?
Sounds like your wireless card is not getting an IP adddess. Check system preferences - network and verify both the ethernet and the wireless connections are getting DIFFERENT Ip addresses. You have to go to your wireless cards website to find out how to connect it to an AEBS. Linksysy has info on their site. Also your AEBS has to be set up to distribute IP addresses, otherwise, the AEBS and the IMAC may have the same IP adress and the system won't accept that.

  • Best non-Airport Wireless Router

    Hi folks.
Have a need for a brand new wireless router for an iPod 3, MacBook Air, and a potential iPhone 6 or maybe a 5C.  Airport is $99, and she's cheap, so I'm looking for some great alternatives.  Over the years I've had good and bad versions, and I'm soliciting experience from others for recommendations on other makes/models.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers

After the death of my AirPort about 18 months ago I decided on a NetGear dual band router which was about $70 less expensive than the Airport Exteme and since I'm a tech there was no reason not to. This is the router recommended as second best at the shop where I work part time. The first thing I was reminded of after my purchase is how 'fun' it is to configure third party routers. It took me three attempts to get it all configured the way I wanted and each reboot of the router took nearly 5 minutes. I'll not regale you with the hardware/firmware issues I dealt with over the next year, it was most un-Apple like. When the router died just outside of the warranty period I paid for the AEBS and frankly I wish I hadn't tried to save the $70. The fact that Apple updates the AEBS firmware and lets the user know in and of itself makes the extra $$$ worth it.

  • Non-AirPort Wireless Option

Can anyone recommend a wireless card other than an AirPort card that will fit in the PCI slot (I think that's what it's called; on the left side?) of my 15 inch PowerBook G4?
    Thanks!

All three cards work with Apple's Airport software, requiring no third-party drivers.

  • Can I add an Airport Express into an existing Non Airport Wireless Network?

    Hi -
Is there any way I can add an Airport Express into an existing Linksys wireless (802.11g) network?. I would not mind switching completely over to Airport but I want to maintain a hybrid (part wired part wireless) configuration as I have now.

Hi skyelaird and welcome to the Discussions
Is there any way I can add an Airport Express into an
    existing Linksys wireless (802.11g) network?.
    Yes.
You would need to configure the Airport Express to join an existing wireless network (client mode).
In this mode you can share a USB printer and stream AirTunes, however the ethernet port would be inactive.

  • Non Airport wireless router & shared usb printer w/ AX

I think this is possible, I hope so. This Sunday I hope to set up 3 photo viewing stations at a soccer tournament I will be covering with many other photographers. We upload our images to Exposure Manager nightly. The center has wireless internet we can access to bring up the website on laptops running a kiosk browser. The viewers can order prints online via credit card. I would like the multiple viewing stations to be able to print out receipts to a shared laser printer (Brother 2040). The printer works fine connected to an Airport Extreme or Express. The dilemma is the laptops must be connected to the sport centers wireless network for internet access and I don't see a way to connect to both Airport and the sports centers router at the same time. If the airport was able to pick up the wireless internet connection (wirelessly) the system would work perfectly. Any ideas?? Thanks!

In Airport Admin (for the Extreme or Espress with the printer), turn off "Distribute IP Addresses." This makes the Extreme/Express a wireless access point with the Other router remaining as the master - all computers (even if they try connecting through the AEX) are then in the same network (and can see the printer). (You can also change the broadcast channel of the AEX.)

  • Mac OS X Server 10.5 Radius authentication for non airport devices

We have an Astaro Security Gateway 220 that we are planning to use for VPN and other services, we would like to use our Xserve to do authentication for our VPN like we already do for our other services on the device. To do so requires that we use Radius as the communication protocol between the server and the gateway, it works just fine to test authenticate as long as I don't set a Nas-Identifier for the test but as soon as I do it fails. The Nas-Identifiers are used to determine which services the account has access to and are named logically for that, things like http, pptp, etc. are used. I can't figure out how to get the gateway to be able to authenticate users, I don't need to be able to limit based on user which services they can access, any service that has a restricted set of users other than just valid users will be handled separately outside this system. If anyone can give me any good ideas on how to solve this it would be appreciated, we currently are only looking at radius fore this, while we use airports for our wireless we don't link them into the server currently though there is a slight chance it will happen in the future.
    Thanks,

I found the problem. When turning off ClamAv virus scanning and Spam filtering everything runs fine again. So now we only have to repair those functions...

  • Ad hoc network with Non-airport adapter

I'd like to be able to set up an ad hoc network to communicate between my PowerMac G5 and an iPod touch. My mac does not have an airport card. I have an ASUS wireless usb adapter. I know this works because I can communicate with my wife's iMac if I create a network on her machine (it has airport built-in). I can't see any way to create a network on my machine, as there is no airport available in Network settings. Is there a way to create an ad hoc network using a 3rd-party USB adapter?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi there,
Did you ever resolve this? I am in the exact situation. Thanks for any tips.

  • Airtunes on a G3 Powerbook using non airport pc card

hello, I'm running a G3 powerbook with a belkin pc card which connects to a wireless network. I also have a macbook and a airport express which I use for airtunes which is great.
Can I use my G3 somehow to stream music to the airport express and use the same speakers without an airport card from this computer. When I start Itunes I dont see the box in the bottom to point music to the speakers so I'm doubtful but you never know.
Running 10.2.8 on the G3 with Itunes 4.7

Configure your AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network which your G43 is connected to. Follow the directions in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.
Your G3 should be able to stream music to the AX just like you MacBook is doing.

  • Non-airport wireless networks don't work

My PB G4 works seamlessly with our home airport network and many third-party networks at malls, air terminals, etc...but in some hotels, it's a bust. Both Airport icon and network preferences will show I am connected to the internet, but in practice, nothing happens...accessing a page just produces a long spinning beach ball and then a message saying the server couldn't be reached. Even hooking to an ethernet cable in the hotel rooms produces nothing, though when I hook up to the ethernet network in the hotel business cventer, all seems well. I am baffled...any suggestions? This is a major hindrance to me in my work. Tx.

The places you are having issues with have you inquired to find out if there is a simple password and or username rquired before you are able to connect.
If you are not having issues at the buisness center via ethernet, and you are not having issues connecting wireless at home or other wireless networks, and the correct changes are made in your System Preferences for the type Networks you are using.
Then the problem I doubt the problem is with the Internet Service you are connecting to.
Don't forget to try Repairing Permissions and follow the Instructions in Gullivers link.

Try to restart your computer as well when you get the error, as well as highlighting the URL address a 2nd time and hit the return a 2nd time and see if it connects.

  • Extend a non Airport wireless network with Airport Express

I want to use an Airport Express to extend a wireless network which is not an Airport network. The wireless is being provided by a wireless router. I tried setting up WDS, but that requires a wireless network. How do I extend the wireless network without it being an Airport Base Station? Can I?
    Thanks.

I'm trying to extend an 802.11g network. The base access point is a SpeedTouch which supports WDS. My Airport Express happily connects to the network as a regular node, but I can't get the WDS to work. Do you know of a way to set this up?
    Thanks!
