Non American

Why don't iPhones work overseas? It's not fair that we know all about it and see all the previews and not be able to get the phone.
HP pavilion dv2000   Windows Vista

Randy, you're right... the U.S. is always last to get the "cool" phones.
I had a friend in medical school in India. Everytime he'd come home to Los Angeles, he'd ask me if i wanted an unlocked new cell phone (GSM). Apparently they are dirt cheap in India (they get them from Asia or Japan, i think).
But they were COOL phones indeed.... he's currently using one that may not be released here in the U.S. for another year or so he was telling me.
So yeah, for once we got the cool phone that the rest of the world wants

  • IPhone 4 Sales Policy in US for Non-Americans

    Hello Folks.
About 2 - 3 monts ago Apple did change its sales policy on the iPhone 3GS allowing non-american (no social security) citizens to buy iPhone 3GS without a contract with AT&T by paying the full price.
Does any one knows if this policy will still aply on the iPhone 4?
Basically... some one from other country will be able to buy an iPhone 4 paying the full price ?
    Thanks!
    G.

Even if you can buy it, it will be locked to AT&T, so won't work with any other carrier's SIM.

  • Japanese IME with non American (- Swiss) Keyboard layout?

Hi, I am trying to use the Japanese IME to type some japanese. However that seems to change the underlying keyboard layout assumed as well - with the IME I now get Z, Y, *, (, ) and other characters when pressing the keys they are normally assigned to on an American keyboard:
    http://www.dtp-transit.jp/images/apple-keyboards-US-JIS.jpg
which is different from the Swiss layout:
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e1/Keyboard_Layout_Swiss.png
For example, in the Swiss keyboard, the * character is suppsed to be Shift+3, but in the American it's shift 8 and so with the japanese IME on, I only get it that way.
Is there some way to select the keyboard layout used with the Japanese IME? On Windows, this requires a hack (you need to tell the IME which keyboard layout dll to use via the registry), but it is at least possible:
    http://nejtj.blogspot.ch/2011/09/howto-japanese-ime-with-non-japanese.html
Is there some way to get the Japanese IME on Mac to use the Swiss keyboard layout? I wouldn't bother having to manually recreate it if that was the only option, but tell me where to start.
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

You set it in the Kotoeri preferences, found toward the bottom of the "flag" menu when one of the Japanese IM's is active:

  • How do i make purchase at foreign non-american itunes music stores???

i wanted to purchase a song from the german itunes music store, so i headed over there, and was told that my account was only valid for purchase in the american itunes store, but if i click the ok tab, then it will transfer over my account info, so i can start buying german songs.
anyway, that's what i did, and at the very moment that i saw a balance on the top right corner of itunes, an error message came up and kicked me back to the american store:
itunes could not connect to the music store. an unknown error occurred (-3237). make sure your network connection is active and try again.
i tried again and again. the same result happened all three times, which led me to the the conclusion that i can try again and again and the same result will happen over and over. i cannot help but wonder if this is some sorta unspoken mechanism to help keep the dollars at home, instead of having the greens shipped overseas.
can someone in the know help with my problem please? any help will be truly appreciated. thank you.

  • Non - American English Language Mail Spell Check?

I am curious, is there a way to set up spell check in Mail so that it corrects for Canadian English instead of US English? Pages, does this - and in fact for numerous languages - nicely, but I haven't seen where one can do this in the Mail app. You know, odd items like "travelling" vs "traveling" or "colour" vs. "color". That sort of thing. Our British friends must have encountered similar issues, come to think of it. What do you all do?
    Thanks,
    john

Spot on, Tom! Good that you mentioned the 2 parts to the solution, because when I only changed the spelling in Prefs/Language, etc. nothing took place. I needed to also go to Edit/Spelling etc. as you point out. Also, I shut down and re-booted to enable everything.
    Thanks kindly,

  • Do non-US english keyboards work properly under ios7 on an ipad4?

Does anyone know if non-american english bluetooth keyboards work properly under ios7 on the iPad 4?
I figure that the results will probably be similar to an iPhone 5s running iOS 7 which is one of a couple reasons why I still have ios6 on my iPad (in addition to iOS 6 just looking far better.)
I have iOS 7.1.2 on my iPhone 5s and also tried typing with it in a few other 7.0.x iOS installs, but for the non-apple apps the keyboard keys I press simply put the key for what would be there on the US keyboard except for keys with no US keyboard counterpart. The keys with no US keyboard counterpart (such as the _ (underscore) key) do absolutely nothing at all.
Does anyone know if somehow this is specific to the iPhone 5s or if this is just inherent to ios7?
As I said, the apple apps seem to work fine. I checked messages, notes, reminders, and spotlight those recognize my keyboard.
Evernote also seems to recognize it.
Facebook, twitter, tumblr, and google+ do not recognize the keyboard (and this is an official apple bluetooth keyboard that has worked perfectly fine with my iPhone 4, 4s, and still works with my iPad 4 (all running ios5 or ios6)).
Does anyone know of any setting that was introduced in ios7 that might fix this or is this just apple screwing up the bluetooth keyboard api and not letting other developers know how to get correct keystrokes from a bluetooth keyboard?
I'd love to be able to FaceTime on my iPad again, but if I'm going to have to put up with an os that I find visually unappealing, I'd at least hope that it could get the right keystrokes to apps (or at least make obvious how to do so).

  • I got a new macbook pro and am having a great deal of trouble with it from the start!  But other than that, which I will get to, I have had macs since the one following Lisa and I am a diehard apple fan, yet now with the macbook pro and Lion and its

I could not download the upgrade to the mountain lion. my updates were taking an enormous amount of time for other programs. When I finally got the indication it was waiting to be downloaded I had to shut down. It was after 2 am and I was practically unconscious already with all the trauma of trying to find the right place for the redeem of the code to open the password. It was all confusing and poorly communicated by Apple. The terrible deterioration of Apple's written communications by non-American techies who can't write for easy understanding, even by this old time tech afficianado is heart-breaking and frustrating is putting the effects mildly.  I have not yet gone back to the mac book pro to finish the job. I am too frustrated and unhappy with the new system.  Also, I found out the hard way that my time capsule saved files on the macbook Snow Leopard, which still works fine after 6 years of use, is locked in that external drive and I cannot transfer the items except one by one or by folders on that computer to a DVD or to a flash drive, to mport to this new computer. Because the systems are not the same, I can't access the files automatically. I fear I will have further problems with the mountain lion vs. lion in seeing those files. What can I do? What should I do?  I am afraid to designate an external hard drive I purchased with the new laptop for the time capsule because then it won't work with any other computer.  I read of terrible incompatibility issues and crashes and things not working right once Mountain Lion was installed and now I am terrified they will happen to me. I just wanted the computer to be as easy to use as all the other macs I have and have had and now it is more like a horribly complicated and difficult Microsoft IBM compatible PC. I hate this. Perhaps Apple wanted to appeal to new Apple users and tried to make them comfortable while disregarding the comfort of loyal Apple users?  It's a sell-out. Meanwhile, I have to get senior tech people because the kids who try to answer my questions much of the time don't interpret what i am telling them and it takes a pro.  Perhaps the kids can answer what I should do in preferenced to scroll the screen, since the scroll indicators disappear and I can't see them and have to resort to using the arrows on the keyboard, which is not the way I like to work.    Please advise me about all of these things!

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • How to do The scenario of Make to order with inquiry and quotation?????????

    Dear All
Now I am implementing a make to order scenario, what we have is a scenario described as below:
The customer sends an inquiry to my client requesting a quotation for manufactures some goods then we have to check the cost and time to manufacture this goods then send him back a quotation so the customer can send the purchase order then I can start creating my sales order.
I want the solution for that as I am not able to know the price in the inquiry stage so I am not able to send him a quotation as I donu2019t know the cost and the delivery time yet
    Thanks in advance

Your steps are correct -- Please see (How to Modify or Create Notifications in Different Languages? [ID 1258834.1]) for details.
For the NLS language, just type in the new language and see if you can view it properly (or save it to the database and see if you can view it from the application then).
If the language is not set properly, you would get an error as the ones addressed in these docs.

  • On migration of Mac Office Excel the date values are changed to mm/dd/yy

I recently upgraded to new iMac and migrated my MacOffice 2008 and now find that all my date data is forced into the American date format (mm/dd/yy). I have phoned Apple support  - no help! Microsoft no online help. Not only is the entry data changed but I have to use the awkward data entry format of mm/dd/yy very unnatural to a non American.
I have searched in Excel preferences and confirmed my OS X 10.10 settings (languages and date formats) all using dd/mm/yy as input and display.
If I enter a date into the spreadsheet say 1/8/14 (meaning 1st August) it comes back with 8th January. Is there a fix or do I have to wear that nonsense?
Any ideas out there? This problem did not exist in Mavericks.
    thanks, Sigi

My requirement is if any of the above stated fileds are having spaces or zeros then I had to assign spaces or zeros to the variable .So many misconceptions.
You start with numbers not dates. You convert those numbers to dates when you can and every time you need to use them, which is why it would be better to store dates in the first place.
You cannot assign either 0 or spaces to a date variable because neither 0 or space is a valid date. You should probably assign it to null.

  • Can I buy an iPod classic in the USA and use it in Germany

    Dear friends and apple users,
I am currently using a MacBook bought in Germany with Mac OS X 10.4.11 and I would like to buy an iPod in the United States as I am staying here for a long time. Can I also use this iPod classic in Germany without any restrictions? I have heard that there is some kind of feature from Apple that makes it possible not to be able to use the iPod outside the USA/with a non-american Apple device.
Thank you for answering in advance,
    my name

I really want to get an iphone, but I'm in the Army and I'm getting assigned to Germany in a few months. I plan for Germany to be my home for a few years. When I looked at Apple stores in Europe I saw they had them in Italy and UK, but not in Germany. My main issue is if AT&T is the service provider in GE. Or do they offer more options over in Europe? Does anyone have any knowledge or experience?

  • Foreign Languages in Labview

    Hi,
Looking at producing a localizable (to three or four different languages) user interface in Labview. Has anyone tried any of the following, or know whether they are possible?
    a) Having a resource file with user interface labels, etc. in non-English extended ascii displayable languages.
    b) Any method of doing the same thing with Asian languages?
    c) Displaying Unicode with labview?
A brief glance shows little thought has been given to localization for the world not represented in the world series, but maybe somebody out there has some workarounds.

    Hi Craig,
Platform independence is *not* an issue for us. Your suggestion of using
ActiveX is an excellent one, and I'll follow it up. I'm sure a few locality
files won't prove too difficult using this technique. Thanks heaps for the
idea. Guess we'll need to get to know ActiveX a bit better.
The Unicode Worldwide Character Standard is a character coding system
designed to support the interchange, processing, and display of the written
texts of the diverse languages of the modern world (kind of like ASCII for
non-Americans). In addition, it supports classical and historical texts of
many written languages. While Micro$oft is on the Unicode consortium, so
are Sun, Apple IBM, Oracle and many more. It is an international standard
supported by most operating systems (including Linux and Solaris) and all
Browsers that I can think of (possible exception of Lynx).

  • Why is date format in mm/dd/yy & time 12hs when entering date in Business Objects report paramenters - V4 only?

Since upgrading to FF4 Business Objects XI parameter dates & times are mm/dd/yy & 12hrs as against dd/mm/yy & 24hrs. FF4 even takes previous dates like 1/5/11 (1May11) and interprets it as 5Jan11. Just have to remember which browser I am using, how it is still counter-intuitive for a non-American.

    Hi,
Not sure if this will help but maybe you could try:
    where to_char(meeting_date,'dd-mm-yyyy') =
    nvl(to_char(:tday,'dd-mm-yyyy'),to_char(sysdate,'dd-mm-yyyy'))
    or perhaps this one:
    where to_char(meeting_date,'dd-mm-yyyy') =
    nvl(:tday,to_char(sysdate,'dd-mm-yyyy'))
    Thanks,
    Richard.

  • Is it possible to use a UK dictionary?

If I type words like "colour" or "honour", the iPhone suggests the American spellings of those words (color, honor).
Here in the UK, on the iPhone bought in the UK, that's no use to me at all. After a bit of fiddling with the settings, I found that I could enable a British keyboard, but all that appears to do is replace the "$" with "£".
Is there any way of using a British dictionary for auto-corrections instead of the standard US dictionary, for us non-American English speakers?

When the keyboard appears on screen press the Globe icon on the left of the space bar.
The Spacebar should briefly show the word "English (UK)" This should remember your setting for the future too

  • Weather widget date screwed up post 01/01/09

Hi. I'm in New Zealand, and as of yesterday my weather widgets are showing the wrong day. It's Saturday morning here, and any New Zealand (or Australian) city I add on my dashboard displays as Friday. Up until a day or so ago this has never been a problem. I've called a few other Mac-users in NZ, and they're all having the same problem, where the dates/forcasts on their weather widgets seem to have defaulted back to American time zones. Any other non-Americans having this issue? Thanks.

Im planning to buy my first ipad, the thing is I live most part of year in latin america, just few months in the states, so i need to buy an ipad that can be used out of the states normaly, i mean to use a data plan for a non-american provider (nor tyt, verizon, tmobile, sprint cause they doesnt work in latin america).
Ive read that a verizon ipad (verizon a cdma provider) could do that, but keep looking others say that just a gsm provider is able to (like att, tmobile), so im asking to anybody with experience in the topic. which one should i buy?

Any iPad Air you buy should be fine. They all have GSM. You'll need to find out if there is a carrier who supports iPhones and who supports 4G LTE.
