Non Apple external DVD R/W drive (USB)

Is there any way I can get a Toshiba (TS-L632) DVD R/W external usb drive to work under OS 10.4? I've tried PatchBurn, but the drive isn't seen so that's no good. The drive does work (I've tested it on a PC).

Hi,
I think Patchburn was your best bet.
Depending what you want it for, VLC may work to Play Movies, Toast Titanium or Dragon Burn should work for Burning.

Apple does not make external HDDs so you will most likely be using a non-Apple drive for backups.
However, I want to understand your question. Are you asking can you connect an external HDD to an AirPort Extreme for Time Machine backups? If so, Apple does NOT support this feature and I would recommend against it.

  • IDVD 4.1 burning to an external DVD-R/RW drive

I have a G4 dual 500 with iDVD 4.1 (5 & 6 require 733 MHz or higher). I just bought an external DVD-R/RW drive and I want to use it with iDVD. I downloaded Patchburn to assist iDVD in seeing the drive. Every time I click Burn, iDVD crashes.
All of my media is on an external drive (Lacie d2 Firewire). Has anyone had any success with this or do I have to upgrade my processor?

I'm not sure patchburn works with OS 10.4.x - when iDVD 4 was released, the OS was at 10.2.8
I suspect you need to update to the iLife '06 applications to get your external drive to work. However, iDVD says it requires at least a 733Mhz G4 or later processor.
Have you tried to see if patchburn will allow you to write a disk image file out of iDVD? If it does that, you can use Apple's DIsk Utility to burn the image to writable media.

  • External dvd/cd firewire drive disappears

I have a OWC Mercury Pro Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Pioneer DVR-218L External DVD/CD Writer. I have it connected by the firewire 800 port. problem is that it will disappear from the desktop intermittently, i only turn it on when i need to use it and sometimes it never mounts the disc. the only way to bring it back is shut down the drive and computer, unplug the firewire cable from the drive and the power cable from the computer. start up the computer and when it is up i can plug the firewire cable back into the computer and start the drive and presto its back and working. also i can not burn music cds with itunes. i will put in a blank cd and it will mount, itunes will go through the whole burn process and then give the error of "the attempt to burn failed. the device is not accessible, probably because it was removed" it is now gone from the desktop at this point and will not open the tray until i shut it down and power it up, and wont mount on the desk top until i do the unplug procedure. any suggestions?!? Thanks Chris

    Hi Chris
Could just be a bad FireWire cable, but it's hard to tell exactly without more testing.
    1. Check the drives power supply connections and try another FireWire cable.
    2. Still having trouble, test the drive connected to another iMac with FireWire 800.
+(ask your Local Apple Store if you can test it with one of there iMacs)+
    3. If it has USB, test it connected up to the iMac USB.

  • PC External DVD/CD-RW Drive To Air

I have always owned PC's, and buy at least 1 new desktop or laptop per year, having to upgrade by choice or need for 3 people. In the last couple of years I have become interested in Macs, because of the good things I have heard, but was put off by the price difference.
So having decided to make my next laptop a Mac, and a possibility the Air, I have questions regarding external devices in general, and external USB DVD drive in particular. I bought an external USB DVD/CD-RW drive for a new netbook a week ago, and I may buy a Mac in the next month or so. Can I use the USB DVD drive I bought on a Mac Air, or any Mac for that matter?
And, can I use my other PC externals (printer, mice, drives, cameras, etc) with any Mac? Going even Further, are any internals like memory or HDD's, WI Fi, compatible?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Most of questions are YES!
HDD are the same but you need to get the right size to fit on laptop hight wise.
All mac's now have WiFi (bar some macpro can be ordered without, i think).
Memory is the same but must be to mac spec for the model, crucial.com I always use.
USB DVD drive will work but it may not not be able to boot macbook air if you need to reinstall OS from 10.5/10.6 DVD's etc. They all should but sometimes they just don't, i found. Fine for DVD burning. note to get most out of any drive Toast is a must buy!

  • Non-Apple RAID card with internal drives possible on 2009 model ?

    Hello there,
I have decided against the Apple Raid card, since it does not support any other drives than the ones sold through the Apple Store and it also only supports up to 1 TB drives.
My goal is to have 3x 1.5 TB drives in a RAID 5 array.
Does anybody know any hardware Raid 5 capable adapters, that can be used with internal 1.5 TB drives & the early 2009 Mac Pro model ?
    Cheers,
    Martin

Once upon a time, in a land far far away, ATTO and LSI, and Adaptec mainly owned the storage market for Mac controllers, and even then in those happy times we heard there was Voodoo in the land, and a curse on what were the Rules of SCSI Voodoo, and one had to be careful that a drive really was certified and tested, and one had to insure which firmware version one was talking about, not just any which firmware - and controllers also had to be updated as well.
Signal processing over SCSI with good active termination, cable length, and 160 pins (and cable strands) (and no noise or crosstalk, good insulation).
If one did all of the above, and was careful, you were rewarded with a working storage controller and array and the best possible performance at the time.
And sometimes you could venture off the reservation... a little, and some drivers could patch and work around bugs in firmware or other problems - just as bugs in cpu, boot firmware, and microcode can be patched by the OS kernel. And people would pay for retail drivers, or they would have to rely on the vendor's bundled driver (that may only work on their own drives and no others).
Hard Disk Toolkit, Silverlining and others made name for themselves, amoung others that now have faded into oblivion for most.
But it still exists when you venture beyond consumer and pro-consumer devices and venture to use FC-SCSI, SCSI, and SAS. And taking a chance when you try to use off the shelf SATA storage products and solutions. There are times when OEM drives really are OEM-only and a good thing; and times to avoid.
And there is no list of any kind of successfully used non-Apple drives, though there is word-of-mouth of a few that definitely need to be avoided.

  • I'm not able to save any files on an none apple external hard drive, what can i do to make it work?

I bought a omega 320GB external hard drive so a friend could save the files off an old windows laptop i had but now when i try and open the files on my mac, it doesn't let me. i'm also not able to save any file on to this hard drive either! can some one please help me?

The drive has the NTFS format, which the Mac OS can read but can't write to. Copy the files from the external drive onto your Mac, then reformat the external drive using Disk Utility, creating a Mac OS Extended volume and using the GUID partition scheme. Then you'll be able to write to the drive. Note that reformatting erases everything from the drive, so don't do it until after you've saved the drive's contents to other media.

  • External DVD/CD connection by USB

I don't have an iPad, but in considering a purchase, I am still mostly Windows based and just starting to shift into Mac, and iPod's along with opening an iTunes account.
-So most of my movies are still on actual hard disc...I have an external CD/DVD hard drive, would I be able to connect that to an iPad?
    -any other solutions...?

    Hi and welcome iguy909..
No USB support for the iPad, tech specs availble here.
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/
The movies need to be in your iTunes library in order to "sync" to your iPad from your computer.
You may want to check out iPad Support here.
And the iPad online user guide here.

  • Is there a way to use a non-apple external display (monitor) without having my macbook air plugged in?

Just got a 27'' AOC monitor that I'm using with my Macbook Air (purchased in 2013). It's working great but as soon as I unplug the power adapter from my laptop the monitor goes black and says 'no signal'. I've been reading online that you need to have the power adapter plugged in to use an external monitor - my questions are: 1) does that harm the laptop's batter? if so, 2) is there a workaround? if there is no workaround, 3) does an Apple monitor also require that a laptop be plugged in for the external display to continue functioning while the laptop is in clamshell mode (closed lid)?
Thanks in advance for any advice

Thanks, Matt. In my case, the monitor definitely shuts off when I unplug the power from my laptop in clamshell mode. If the lid is open, however, the monitor continues to function even without the power adapter plugged into my laptop. Ideally, I'd like to have the lid closed on my laptop and be able to use the external monitor without having the power plugged into my laptop. That's what doesn't seem to work - if your does, please let me know if you have any pointers.
    Thanks again!

  • Non apple external displays

i just got an external VGA monitor and I hooked it up to my Mac book pro using the DVI/VGA adapter. The desktop background shows up on the monitor, but I can't move my pointer over to the other monitor. Does anyone know how I can use both the external monitor and my MBPs monitor at the same time as one big desktop?

because my laptop screen is so much smaller then my 23" screen, to move accross to my laptop for example i have to move my mouse from the center left of the screen to get it to cross over, if i do it in the top left or top right corner it just stays on the screen.

  • External DVD drive not working

Need some help with this one:
    My sister-in-law has an iMac G4 1.25Ghz 17” LCD USB 2.0 with 10.4.11.
The internal DVD-ROM CD-RW died awhile back so she purchased a Sony external DVD-ROM CD-RW USB 2.0 to take its place.
    Everything was working fine.
Recently, she had some bad sectors on her HD (5 yrs old anyhow), so I purchased her a new HD, installed it and while I had the case open, I removed the broken internal DVD-ROM CD-RW. Installed a fresh 10.4.11
System profiler can see the USB Sony DVD-ROM CD-RW, but when a disk is installed, or when I open Apple DVD player, it says a disk drive cannot be found.
The DVD can be seen on the desktop.
System prefs is configured to open Apple DVD player when a DVD is inserted.
I hooked the new Sony drive to my setup (iMac G5 2.0) and the drive works fine when I put in a DVD.
Would removing the old broken DVD-ROM drive from the G4 cause the new external USB Sony not to work??
Any suggestion? I checked Sony’s site and there is no d/l’s for the drive.
    Thanks,

    Hey Bob,
My understanding of this is that when you install the OS there is like a "shake hands" with the DVD-ROM chip on the internal ATA bus by the installer. The installer then installs/enables the necessary components to play DVDs.
Would removing the old broken DVD-ROM drive from the G4 cause the new external USB Sony not to work??
If you remove that drive that's probably why you get the:
"An installed DVD player cannot be found" error.
I did not re-apply any thermal compound on the heat pipes. Is the compound something I can get a Radio Shack?
Here's the exact procedure from the 1.25 Service Manual:
"This procedure requires the following tools:
    • Plastic stylus or plastic spatula to remove the old thermal paste
    • Plastic stylus or plastic spatula to spread the thermal paste
    • Thermal paste (922-4757)
    Part Location
    1. Thoroughly clean the original thermal film from the mating surfaces (circled below) of
the bottom housing and thermal pipe. Use a plastic stylus to scrape the surfaces
clean. Note: Do not use an abrasive material or liquid cleaner.
    2. Squeeze a ball of thermal paste onto the mating surfaces of the thermal pipe.
    3. Replace the bottom housing.
Warning: The bottom housing has four torx screws that must be tightened to at least
17 in.-lbs. Use a torque driver (service tool 076-0899) to ensure that the thermal pipe
is firmly mated with the top base. If you do not have a torque driver, you must make
sure the screws are tightened by hand FIRMLY, BUT NOT FORCIBLY.
Failure to apply the thermal paste as described in this procedure, and failure to
tighten the torx screws as directed, could cause the computer to overheat and
    damage internal components."
I personally haven't had a 1.25 apart. The 700s and 800s I've had apart have a silicone pad like material or thick rubber compond on the heat pipes. The manuals for those machines refer to "thermal pads".
I think you could use a thermal pad material like from Micro Center, Comp USA or Radio Shack.
This is the Radio Shack stuff:
    http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2295074&cp=&sr=1&kw=therma lpad&origkw=thermalpad&parentPage=search
If the thermal stuff was not too badly damaged you'll probably be OK but I'd probably run Temperature Monitor for a while just to make sure.
