Non-Apple Mouses

I use a microsoft optical mouse with two side buttons and a scroll wheel for my pc and I love it because you can go back and forwad while browsing the internet with ease thanks to the side buttons. Right now i'm trying it out on my macbook but the side buttons don't work while browsing in safari. I was wondering if u can make them work some how because they are so helpful! Thanks

You can download the Microsoft Intellipoint mouse driver and install it to get your functions back. Or use USBOverdrive. Either should work for what you are wanting. I believe that the Microsoft driver may give you additional capabilities, such as Magnify (I don't know for sure if this is supported on Macs, but it is a really nifty feature on Microsoft mice under Windows).

  • Can't use non apple mouse with hard drive test?

Having trouble reading an installation CD for a new scanner. Laptop with Tiger fine. Not iMac. So, was trying to run Hardware Test. Inserted disk, restarted with option key down. Image comes up. Can't select anything because Macally mouse won't work in harddrive test mode. Mouse plugged into port on back of computer, not in keyboard. Do I have to find the original apple mouse?
    Thanks for help! Judy

It should work, I have a non-Apple mouse that I use for that and it works just fine. Perhaps Macally mouses require special software to run, maybe you should check their web site. I know my Wacom, what I usually use, is completely dead until my login window opens.
So, yeah, I think you need to find the original Apple one.

  • Panning with a non-Apple mouse

I'm using a Razer Orochi, and I want to be able to pan (horizontal and/or vertical scrolling, the same way as a two-finger drag on a touchpad) by moving it. Is there a button config or keyboard shortcut for this?

I mentioned the model & driver for completeness and macro programmability, not because I expected the pan functionality to be provided by a 3rd party driver.
There is no way that I can see to setup any non-apple mouse to be able to pan, 3rd party drivers or not.
Something as simple as hold control while dragging would be perfect.
AFAICT there is no support for panning with a mouse is OSX.
I can't even find a way to pan with the keyboard.

  • Using non apple mouses...

My Logitech G5 Gaming Laser Mouse USB (Corded) - http://www.surpluscomputers.com/348331/logitech-g5-gaming-laser-mouse.html
Isn't working too well on my 13'' macbook pro - http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MC374LL/A?mco=MTc0Njg1ODA
Whenever I aggresively use the mouse (ie trying to scroll all the way left or right up or down) in SC2, it works fine.
But whenever I try to do "close" movement actions (ie send a probe that spawns at nexus to mineral line)
the mouse cursor goes EXTREMELY slow and I need to "force" it by moving it further/faster in the designated direction.
Is there a reason for this? (it also happens not in sc2, but I thought with all the computer gurus here, I'd post it)
Also, it's come to my attention that this could be the cause of "acceleration."
    Any way to disable this?

Acceleration means what it says. As you move the mouse faster, do you want the pointer to accelerate a little, or a lot? You might want to set acceleration to a low value. Check the Logitech driver software for this feature, or if that doesn't work, try the Keyboard & Mouse system preference where Apple calls it "Tracking Speed."
The reason some people like high acceleration is that they have large monitors or multiple monitors. A constant speed would not work, because it would be invariably too fast for small movements and too slow to get the cursor from the far left to far right edge of all connected monitors. So acceleration means if you move the mouse a couple inches slowly, the mouse is at or nearly at 1:1 speed, but if you move the mouse the same couple inches but much more quickly, it moves the pointer much further so you can get across all monitors fast.
If you have a small monitor, like a 13", acceleration/tracking speed should be set rather low.

  • Question about Lion on non apple mouse

I am thinking of downloading lion, however the videos make great emphasis on being able to flick through pages just like on a iPad, but I don't have a trackpad and I use a trust mac mouse as the one that came with it battery life was rubbish. How do you use the features with no track pad. Are other features worth getting it for?
    Carrie

Here is the warranty link from the mighty mouse page.
    http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/hardware.html
With the mighty mouse you should get a receipt that is your proof of purchase for when it was purchased. There is no registration because there is no serial number to register it with.
The MacBook has it's own one year warranty so you don't need to worry about the Mighty Mouse one year warranty covering it?
I suggest you keep the receipts in a safe place so if you need them you have them.

  • Problem with a non-apple-mouse

    Hi,
I don't like the one button mouse, so I use a USB mouse on my Power Mac G5. But the mouse is extremly imprecise but on a windows computer it works fine.
Can somebody recomend a mouse which works fine on a mac?
    Thanks

I presume you've set the cursor speed and suchlike in System Preferences/Keyboard and Mouse?
Did the mouse come with driver software or software for it's own Control Panel?
Generally most mice should work fine, but if you still have a problem, Logitech are a good choice..

  • Have no mouse and a non-apple keyboard

i recently got this computer as a hand me down so I could get accustomed to Mac OS. unfortunately it did not come with a keyboard or a mouse and all i have available right now is a non-apple keyboard. I'm having difficulty trying to navigate my way through anything. Can anyone help?

    Hi, s2loco -
    Eww is correct.
For many things there are keyboard workarounds. For example, if you are looking at the desktop, press the up-arrow key - that should highlight the upper-leftmost icon on the desktop; you can then use the arrow keys to navigate from icon to icon on the desktop. Note though that you can only travel that way in a straight line, laterally or vertically.
You can also press the initial letter of the filename of the item - even the first two if you're fast enough - and the alphabetical-earliest item whose filename starts with that lerr(s) will be selected. You can then press Command-O as before.
You can also press 1 to select an item that starts with 1, or the earliest item alphanumerically, and then use the Tab key to move from one item to the next in alphanumerical order.
These methods will also work in a folder set to List view as well as one set to Icon view.
Once the icon of an item you want to activate (open if it is a folder, start if it is a program, open with its creator program if it is a document) is selected, pressing Command-O (that's the letter "O", lower case) will initiate that action.
However - although the Enter key can be used in most windows to activate the default button, there is no keyboard solution to using pulldown menus, or to select items in a radio-button array (like in control panels), or (in most windows) to click a button other than the default one. For those a mouse is needed.
Just as important is using a keyboard which is compatible with Apple command keys. Although there are many non-Apple keyboards which are Mac-compatible, many, if not most, PC keyboards are not - it is iffy whether the Window, Alt, or whatever-they-use keys on such will behave like the keys on Mac-compatible keyboards.
If you have a working mouse, then you can sidestep the absence of keyboard command compatibility on such keyboards - except at startup. No matter how well we maintain our Macs, at some point or another we will need to use one or more startup commands - to zap the PRAM or rebuild the desktop; or to select an alternate boot volume; or to access Extensions Manager before the OS loads; or for some other crisis-based reason. For that reason it is wise to have a Mac-compatible keyboard available.

  • Apple mouse ball non-functional

Is there a way to disassemble Apple Mouse to clean out the roller ball? Tried rolling it on cloth many times but no longer works.

I have a later USB Apple mouse, and the roller collects enough dust to become annoyingly non-functional in one direction or another within a period of 4-6 months. After the first time it happened, I realized that since the outer bezel was glued on, Apple did not intend for me to service the mouse, even though I knew exactly what was wrong. I took it in and the Apple Store gave me another one. The same thing happened again, but I am now nowhere near an Apple store, and the mouse is out of warranty anyway, so I fixed it myself. What a nightmare. Unlike the mouse shown in the video, the cables connecting one circuit board to the other are much shorter, and unplugging and re-plugging them is like trying to add mustard to a fully assembled ham sandwich without removing the bread.
In the good old days of user-serviceable mousies, all you had to do to clean the tracking ball and its contacts was turn a bezel 1/4 turn with your fingers and out popped the ball. Now of course since the Apple mouse uses a laser instead of a ball to track movement, that's no longer necessary. But the scrolling ball could easily be designed for simple removal. Having to break open a glued-together component and go through the virtual equivalent of micro surgery just to clean a ball and rollers (in a ridiculously complex assembly) that are just going to get dirty and start malfunctioning within months is absolutely ridiculous. The scroll wheel, being on top, will collect dust internally no matter how operating-room clean you keep your office.
This mouse is obviously designed to be non-user serviceable. And frankly, what computer service technician would go through all that hassle without charging you $50 (the cost of the mouse) anyway? So essentially the mouse has a tricky bit of built-in obsolescence that would force all but the most determined do-it-yourselfer to just go out and buy another one. I thank you for the video anyway, but this operation is not for the faint of heart, so I'm quite sure that very few people will actually try to clean their scroll wheel assembly, which is a shame and a waste.

  • Airport Locks with non-Apple Bluetooth Mouse

I have an iBook 12" G4 1.33GHz 1.5GB RAM, internal Airport Extreme, Bluetooth, etc.
I have tried several non-Apple Bluetooth mice and they create the same problem: Airport stops working and when I put the mouse pointer on the menubar Airport icon it turns into a spinning disk. I have looked in the log files but can't see anything useful. I have to reset the computer to get it to work properly again. If I use an Apple bluetooth mouse this does not ever happen. I am trying to use the same Logitech mouse that I have used perfectly well for over a year on my Apple Mini G4.

  • Macbook Pro does not boot from install CD, boots from non-apple live CDs

This story begins with my macbook becoming entirely unresponsive while just sitting around with the desktop in focus. My current problems begin with the third of such freezing events. It felt like the hard drive had stopped responding since everything looked fine and I could move my mouse, but as soon as I attempted to access anything that depended upon the file system (ie everything not already in memory) that thing I attempted to access would freeze up as well. The only thing I can do when these happen is to force a shutdown.
The three times I have had these problems I would be greeted with the flashing folder-and-question-mark. So, for the third time now I threw in a live CD I have and ran DiskWarrior and DiskUtility and fsck and everything I could possibly need to recover the system. Each of these programs ran through their routines and reported that it had either successfully made repairs or the disk needed no repairs and was A-OK!. S.M.A.R.T. reports that the drive is perfectly fine as well.
Now, though, whenever I try to start up my computer I'm greeted with the normal grey apple startup image, the folder with the question mark, and also the prohibited sign (grey circle with a slash through it). This is the first time that running the disk repair programs has failed. Expecting a crashed hard drive or something equally fun I threw in the live CD again and attempted to recover my data. The thing is, I was able to navigate the file system perfectly with terminal and didn't even need any data recovery tools. So, at least my data has been safely backed up.
I've tried booting into single user mode, but it seems that DiskWarrior helped my computer in an assisted suicide of sorts as boot.efi is sitting in a DiskWarrior recovered folder and the mach kernel has been entirely misplaced. Immediately I restart, throw in the first Macbook Pro installation CD, and hold down C in an attempt to reinstall the system.
Here is my current problem: Whenever I attempt to boot from any of the installation CDs that came with my laptop, the laptop will begin to boot from the CD and show a grey screen as it begins reading from the disk, but before the spinning gear or grey apple appears the laptop simply restarts and attempts to boot from the disk again.
This boot-restart process loops infinitely with every Apple-provided installation CD I have tried. The laptop never progresses past a grey screen, instead restarting and happily chiming. However, I have been able to boot from a non-Apple Live CD that I own every time I have tried; moreover, the hard drive is perfectly accessible and shows no errors from any program I run. When I hold option upon startup it shows the drive and lets me boot into it (but then the problems I have described pop up). I have also tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM with no success.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to boot into the live CD? Or would I be better off making sure I have backed up all of my data and then wiping the drive for a fresh install?

I am having the exact same issue. I can only log into the system in safe mode. Holding down the Shift key when turning the machine on, until the log window appears.

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard with Windows 7 on non Apple Hardware

    Good Day,
I love the Apple Wireless Keyboard and it's the on I use when using my Thinkpad laptop as a desktop, meaning connected to an external Monitor and with an external keyboard and mouse. The Keyboard I use is an Apple Wireless Keyboard.
On my MBA 13 I use Windows 7 as my OS and the Apple lyouted keyboard works actually quite well with windows: The function keys perform very much like in Mac OSX with the volume, screen brightness, the fn+left or right for "home" or "end" etc.
Not I bought an Apple Wireless Keyboard to use in conjuction with my Thinkpad but all does features are missing. I guess that this has to to that on the MBA 13 the appropriate drivers where installed when the whole Bootcamp Software package was installed.
Since I obviously cant install the whole Bootcamp CD on non Apple Hardware, is there any way to just download somewhere the drivers for Apple KEyboards so the behave the same way as they would on a Mac running Windows?
Or is there any other way I could use my Apple Wireless Keyboard with non Apple Hardware the same way it behaves on my MBA 13 running Windows 7? Can somwhere lolely the Apple Keyboard drivers be downloaded?
I want to thank anyone who is kind enough to help mme with this mather in advance and please leave out comments of the kind that I it's my fault, I should have bought an Apple machine from the beginning. I have my reasons and If anyone can't handle that I kindly ask you to just ignore this post unless it's constructive and helpful contribution

After 3 frustrating hours of trying every tip on the net, I found the answer: Try this.
"This finally fixed it for me: Device Manager - Open System Devices, you will find a Bluetooth HID Device. Double Click it, open Driver tab and click "Update Driver" Select Browse my Computer, then "Let me Pick". It should now show TWO compatible drivers with exactly the same name. One of them is the Microsoft one, one is the non-working Chinese ****. Install one of them and see if the driver properties changed to the right (Microsoft) driver. If not, try again with the other one. For me, the Microsoft driver was the first one in the list, but this may be different for you. Wow, an annoying and intense hour of trouble shooting finally over..."

The issue is related to the Chinese version of the driver that the latest windows update applies that stops the keyboard from working.
