Non-controllable Capture Problem

Yesterday I captured via a Sony media converter, on the non-controllable device mode and didn't have any problems. In fact I've been doing that for years. I captured via firewire last night, when I opened up FCP to capture from a non-controllable device via the media converter today, it reads the audio (I see the levels bouncing) but only gives me a gray screen for the video.
The settings all seem to be correct, I've tried different cables, switching from the non-controllable camera to the non-controllable DVD player that I used yesterday (didn't work either), and was only able to capture like normal using a controllable camera via firewire.
I looked for similar problems on this forum; nothing matched, but one solution suggested trashing my FCP preferences, which I tried (but didn't empty the trash). Of course, that didn't work either.
I'm going to find another media converter, but if that's not the problem, does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your time.

I'm sorry, I'm sure, just like the solution to my question, the way to delete a posting is right infront of my face, but I don't have time to keep looking.
Apparently the media converter defaults to the S-Video port when both RCA and S-Video cables are connected. I took out the S-Video cable and things seem to be back in working order.

  • Audio syncing problems w/ non-controllable device

I have some old 8mm camcorder tapes that I'm trying to capture in FCP. I have a digital 8 camcorder that's able to play back my old 8mm tapes and convert the analog video to DV within the camera, and send it via FireWire, just like with standard digital 8 tapes. The difference is that there's no timecode with the old analog 8mm tapes, so I have to change my device settings to "non controllable device." So the problem is that the audio doesn't seem to be sinking properly. When I play back the captured video, the audio is so glitchy, it's completely unintelligible.
The only solution I've come up with would be to first copy the old 8mm tapes  to digital 8 tapes, and then capture the digital 8 tapes in FCP. But I would need my old analog 8mm camcorder for that, and I don't have it anymore.
I'm using FCP 5.1.4. Your suggestions are much appreciated.

iMovie uses a straight transfer of the muxed audio/video stream - the DV format.
This muxed version is a non-native format to FCP and requires rendering as you edit.
Converting to DV/NTSC (DV/PAL) Quicktime de-muxes the audio and video into separate streams. FCP is optimized to edit this Quicktime format without rendering.
Using DV is like trying to edit H.264 files. You can bring these non-native formats into FCP and the program will try to work with the material. However, they will cause problems. It is better to have the material in a FCP native format.

  • 'Audio to Video' problem when trying to import from non-controllable device

    Hello,
I am trying to import media from a VHS into FCP, using a 'Dazzle', (DAC from Data Video). In my Capture Settings, under Device Control, I selected 'Non-controllable device', and under the Capture/Input setting, I chose the default, 'DV STSC 48 khz', then did 'Capture Now'. It seemed to work fine, until about half-way through the project, I noticed that the sound did not match up to the people speaking/singing on the video. Should I change the Capture/Input setting to something else? Or, is there another setting I need to make, so that audio/video will match up? Also, should I maybe try a Batch Capture, instead of Capture Now? I just thought of that when writing this - any help would be most appreciated, thank you!
    Kristina

Ooooo.... Hate to say... Dazzle just has bad memories for me. Hollywood Bridge... made by Dazzle...
Nothing but problems. Not sure if yours is the same.
Anyway to use your camera as a passthru for the VCR instead?
Still -- no guarantees sync will line up. For that you need to capture in 15 minute or less segments. Hard to do with VHS that will run for 2 hours... but it's your best bet. Join them up in post if you have to.

  • Non-Controllable Device (other than the freezing) problem

I am using FCP 6.0.2 and 10.5.1. I have had virtually no problems for years, but this one recently appeared. I can capture using any setting except for Non-Controllable device. I have two cameras I use, the Sony HDR-FX1 and a little Panasonic hand held Mini-Dv camera. Both have worked before using the non-controllable device, but now when I choose that setting, it says "No Communication" As soon as I put it in any other setting, it says "VTR OK" and I can capture and use all the controls. Seems like it happened after I installed Leopard.
I tried looking for something in all the settings and preferences but didn't see anything. I also trashed all the preferences for FCP. Any other ideas before I re-install FCP?

Try repairing your permissions as well...then be sure to re-boot

  • Capturing 720x486 from non-controllable device?

    Hi All,
I am using a widemouth betacamsp deck routed through a sony dsr-11 connected by firewire to a G5 using FCP crossgrade. Capture is set to DVNTSC 48kHz, non-controllable device. This works fine when digitizing non-closed captioned tapes.
I want to preserve the line 21 data, so I need to capture at 720x486...When I set the capture preset to 8-bit uncompressed, the setting for the device preset changes to generic capture template. When I want to capture, I get an error message...something about an audio/video digitizer.
What am I missing? Is there another way to capture at 720x486? Is there another way to route the decks? I've heard that there is a way to do this w/o setting to non-controllable device, but I can't remember what that was.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, if you need more specs I will be happy to provide them.
    Thanks!

  • Capture Now with Non-Controllable Device and Timecode from deck

    Hi,
Trying to replace a windows laptop using premiere during our events.
The mentioned system will allow me to get audio/video/timecode all through firewire from the deck AND allow me to "capture now" as a non-controllable device.
I have not been able to find out how to do this with FCP6. I am able to get the timecode I need, but only with the "controllable" device settings I have thus far tried, at which point a "capture now" gives me an error message stating that the tape has ran out (or something of the sort)
With "Non-Controllable Device" selected, I can "capture now" but the slot where the deck's timecode had been located is completely gone and no timecode was recorded on any of the test clips I tried.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hi -
    I'm confused.
The DSR 45A only has one firewire port, if you are plugging your computer into that to source the video, where is the video and timecode source feeding the DSR-45A coming from?
Within the DSR 45A there are internal menu selections that specify the timecode behavior of the DSR-45A, are these menu settings correct?
If you load a pre-recorded tape into the DSR-45A can you control the deck, and successfully capture from it as a controlled device from your FCP computer?
    You said:
we have main deck, a backup deck and a dvr deck recording the primary feed. the capture now stuff is extra bonus!
What are the formats of these decks? Is the timecode feeding the DSR-45A coming from one of them?
    Thanks

  • Naming files when capturing as a non-controllable device in FCP Express

Hey, we've got an iMac here capturing a live feed into Final Cut Express 4.0, coming in as a non-controllable device.. it all works fine however I cant seem to name the files, they all capture as 'Untitled'.. any ideas on how I can name the files? At the moment the usual text areas where you can enter file names is grayed out, and I dont know why!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Here's what we can see in user manual, page 189:
    "Automatic Filenaming During Capture
If you want, you can deselect the checkboxes next to the logging fields in the
Capture window. In this case, the Name field remains empty, so Final Cut Express
names your media file for you. Final Cut Express automatically names media files and
their corresponding clips using the following convention: Untitled, Untitled1,
    Untitled2, and so on."
So may be you have to select some checkboxes to get a custom name instead of untitled.
You can always rename clip in Browser.

  • Fc express and live capture with non-controllable devices

final cut pro allows live capture from non-controllable devices, by selecting this option in the capture window (as i understand). in my case that would be a sony dvc trv900e which i want to use without a tape loaded, and that means no timecode is transmitted.
is it possible to do this in fc express? when i try to capture, i just get the window up saying waiting for timecode...

great - thanks! i've read in numerous places that it is not possible in fc express, which i found hard to believe. i found the preset in the easy setup options. hallelujah!

  • Non-Controllable HDV Ingest?

    Hello all,
I'm working in my first ProRes project, but because I'm coming from HDV, I'm only going to ProRes LT, not ProRes 422 HQ or even just normal 422. Because of this, I can't do the simple HDV->ProRes option that automatically transcodes HDV to ProRes 422. Instead, I have a Sony 1080i HDV project setup, and I plan on importing into HDV, then using Compressor overnight to transcode to LT. Problem is my last tape has a glitch about 90 seconds into it, and I want every frame I possibly can, but FCP keeps making a new clip on the timecode break. I've told it not to via "Create new clip on Start/Stop detect". Now under User Preferences->General, "On Timecode Break" there's no option to do nothing, save for Warn After Capture, so I have that option selected and Abort capture on dropped frames turned off. It still either stops the import or makes a new clip.
Now I'm trying as a non-controllable device, but can't seem to get HDV to import as non-controllable. I've searched here, and googled, and the best result I got was this blog: http://fcproducer.com/2008/09/capture-now-with-hdv/ with the same problem as me. We both get a message that says "To capture HDV source material, both the Capture and Device Control presets must be configured for HDV; otherwise, to capture in another format, both must not be configured for HDV." I want to import as HDV, but I don't care about timecode as 1. I figure transcoding to ProRes will throw away my original TC anyways and 2. I won't be going back to HDV tape or recapturing anything.
What is the easiest way to get HDV to capture straight through timecode breaks and tape glitches into one single 63 minute file?
I've had a rough day already and FCP is not my friend today, so I sincerely appreciate the help,
    -Brian

    Brian,
I have occasionally run into the same thing capturing as HDV and it is so very frustrating. Often times the timecode break seems to happen in different spots. And no, I can't capture over it and ignore the timecode either.
Is there a spot after the break where you can start from with good continuous capture? Start with that, if for no other reason that to get a better outlook on the project. Then get as close as you can with that spot and hope you can use a cutaway.
Do you know anyone that can capture directly as ProRes that you can beg them to do that section for you? I have an AJA IoHD I use to capture most of my HDV as ProRes. Usually works good even on those pesky tapes that capturing as HDV says has those timecode breaks. Go figure. Finicky HDV.
Just for grins try a different FW cable. That helped once.
Sorry I'm not more help. Been there, no fun. Good luck.

  • Capture problem: TCBreak creates 1 frame clip

    Hi,
I am capturing 1080i59.94 DVCPRO HD footage in FCP 5.1.4 from a Panasonic HD1400 via firewire. I use the CAPTURE NOW function. Everytime FCP get to a timecode break, stops and tries to find the break and starts to capture again from that point. The problem is that even if the previus captured (before timecode break)clip was 3 minutes long, it is saved as a 1 frame clip (00:00:00;01)in the bin (browser). When I look at the size of the clip in the Finder, the size match the captured time (3 min) and I can watch the full clip in Quicktime.
When I try to bring back the 3 minute clip in FCP, it still gives a 1 frame clip even if the link file is 3 min long. And it's not me in/out points and I trashed the prefs several times.
It happenned with many tapes shot with the HDX-900 with 1 min, 2 min and 30sec clips.
    Thanks

The timecode break happen 'cause we shoot in freeRun so the 2 cameras start to shoot at 8AM if they stop at 8:30 and start back at 9AM, so will the timecode. And they are linked with a BNC so that they have the same timecode when they shoo
If you can "jam" code to the cameras, then I'm not sure why you are using Free Run code.
2- It would sure work with log and capture but I ain't got time to log everything
Not sure why you're getting the one frame clips but other than going "non-controllable" the only way around the time code breaks is to cut around them in the logging process.

  • Capture Problems URGENT...

I have rented a Panasonic AJ-SD93 vtr to capture footage in dvcpro format. When I attempt to capture, the error reads:
"Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved."
Nothing captures. It is as if it instantly freeze frames and errors out. I tried changing my capture settings to non-controlable device and use "capture now" but even that doesn't work. However, FCP can control the device and preview works fine. I just can't capture. What am I doing wrong??? Thanks in advance.
    Final Cut Studio HD 5.0

DO NOT set device control to non controllable. This is for devices that don't output timecode such as VHS. If you use it you will not get code from the tape. Instead FCP will lay it's own code and as I said before, it will have no relationship with the TC from the tape.
Once again, the easiest way to set up a program is to choose the EASY SETUP that matches the footage you shot. Now that you know it's DV50, choose the easy setup for dv 50. This should set choose all the proper presets for you. After creating the easy setup, create a new sequence and start capturing.
    Good Luck

  • Non-Controllable Device Sound Drift

My wife is a dance teacher who recorded some of her choreography using our Sony DVR-PC100. Unfortunately for me she "needs" to rewind the tape and review each take to make sure it is good before proceeding to the next dance. Since the tape I'm given to capture is a mess of broken timecode, I decided to use capture settings for a non-controllable device. The problem that I'm running into is the sound on the captured clip has drifted. I had run into a similar problem in the past when I was capturing and Hi-8 tape using a Sony DCR-TRV480 Digital 8 camera. Since the solution in that case was to set the camera output to 16-bit, I checked the audio settings on the PC100 and found that it is set to 12-bit (which doesn't seem to be a problem when device control is set to Firewire NTSC). I changed the audio setting on the PC100 and recaptured the footage but the sound was still drifting. Why this was still happening didn't make sense to me until I realized that changing the audio setting on the PC100 wasn't going to change the fact that the audio was originally recorded in and still was 12-bit audio. I believe the TRV480 is different because with the analog tapes I was capturing it was digitizing the video on the fly. My question (I apologize for my long-winded explanation) is there a way to capture the broken timecode footage shot with 12-bit audio without getting audio drift. The only solution that I can think of is put the original tape in another camera and output analog footage into the PC100 with the audio set to 16-bit. I should end up with a DV tape with continuous timecode and 16-bit audio. I think I would be OK with 12-bit audio at this point because I would have continuous timecode. Thanks in advance

The camera output is not relevant, only that the tape was actually recorded at. Was this material recorded at 32k or 48k, that is was it 12-bit or 16-bit? Whichever it is that's the setting you have to use in FCP.

  • Non controllable device lost

    hello everybody there,
I am trying to capture analog vhs-footage via a canon mvx350i (the camera serving as a analog-dv converter) but with or without the device connected, the setting for dv-converter does not work. it displays that the device profile for a "non controllable device" is missing.
if I trash prefs, the initial setup dialog ends up with an error -34, and I can not select the basic config for a dv-converter.
It makes no difference if I first connect the camera and then start fce, or vice versa. the configuration is just not available.
capturing does work with iMovie or quicktime, so I can use it as a workaround.
    I recently updated to OS 10.5.2, quicktime 7.4.1, fce is 4.0 .
re-installed FCE and QT. repaired permissions several times.
allthough I can use the iMovie or Quicktime workaround, I like to know where that "non-controllable-device profile" got lost?
    thank you for you help,
    michael

    I found it:
its a problem with the german localisation:
just for trying (and for looking up the correct english menu-items for better communication in the forum)
I switched to english as first language, then startet FCE, everything went fine and easy.
I had then 2 possible options to choose from in easy setup:
DV-Converter and DV-Konverter (the latter beeing German)
if I Choose the english "Converter", it works.
seems the german localisation can not connect to the proper config or something.
I think this is maybe something apple should know. What would be the best way to give them a note?

  • Possible solution for no preview and capture problems

We are part-time, intermittent users of FCPro - so numerous upgrades of QT, system10, FCPro have taken place since last we captured or did any editing. Seems like all our presets from former use have disappeared, leaving us starting fom scratch. Not using a sophisticated set-up, still capturing through the ADVC-100 with a non-controllable camera. All I know is, last time I captured, everything worked, and I never have had the option of device control.
After my struggling with the no preview issue all day, my husband DID do some maintenance stuff (delete preferences, repair permissions, etc) but I don't think that was a factor. Try the following (keep in mind, the ADVC is a pass-through "thing"(?)):
    Audio/Video Settings
    Capture Presets
    Edit
    Name: DV NTSC 48 Khz
Quicktime Video Settings: Digitizer DV Video
    Input: DV-VCR
Quicktime Audio Settings: Device DV Audio
Please bother to post back if this solves your problem - then others will know it works.
Still having audio sample rate problem, so I may be back....

Using FCP 5.1.4 During the quest, I'm fairly sure we tried that repeatedly. I think the setting that made the difference between "working" and "not working" was the Quicktime (vers.7.2) setting for Input to DV-VCR. But you are right, I did need to reset the other setting in "capture now" screen to non-controllable device. I did look over past posts on this subject, and before I got cross-eyed from trying to digest too much techno-talk, I did seem to see a correlation with QT in people's observations.
Oh, and BTW, I wouldn't say it works like a charm - I keep having to go back to easy setup and re-choosing my settings. Sounds to me like something that is supposed to get re-set as part of the preview/capture procedure is actually re-setting the wrong variable, and creating a domino effect after that. There's bad code somewhere.

  • Non controller vi returns error: no listeners

Dear All, The hint of several users inside helped me few times up to now.Unfortunally actually I have a special problem using non-controller.vi. The non-controller.vi itself works probably by addressing it with MAX (communicate with instrument). But it should work with another SW which can control GPIB devices (SW for EMC testing called RSUS). I adapted the non controller vi for my purpose, but the basic functionality stays same. My non-controller vi shall return a value for each different channel (kanal (1), kanal (2),...). If I send kanal (1) using MAXI get "1" as return. If I use the EMCtest SW I get the error: ENOL (2) "No Listeners on GPIB". Please fined attached the spy capture, row 1+2 captured using MAX, row 3+4 captured using EMCtest SW. Many thanks in advance for your hints and support
