Non-Detected RAM

I've got a 1.8 Dual G5 with 4x256MB RAM Modules already inside. If I move the pairs around the computer will not restart. I also purchased 2x1GB RAM Modules to upgrade the machine. If I put those in the machine w/out moving the others around it will start, but not detect.
What am I doing wrong?

When changing RAM configuration, in order for the memory to be seen and register properly, I've found that nvram needs to be cleared in order for the device tree to be rebuilt properly. Either zap PRAM/NVRAM from cold boot, or reset-nvram from Open Firmware (command option of).
Sometimes A brand and B brand don't get along, so test with just the new RAM as well. I'd put the 1GB DIMMs in first, see if it works, then the 4 x 256.
Run Apple Hardware Test and Memtest if you want to be sure. Memtest is easy to run with Applejack custom install (readme that comes with it).
Link to vendor these came from? DDR400 PC3200?

  • Using non-original RAM in X4600

    Hi @all,
did anybody tried to use non-original RAM for a X4600? We are thinking to do so, because the RAM is a little bit expensive and we have an offer for the same typ of RAM from a local vendor for 1/4 of the SUN price. Anybody have any experiences?
    Thanks in advance
    Andr

Normally, as with all other manufacturers, there could be warranty issues when using 3rd party RAM. Contact Sun.

  • True non-volatile ram - Yes or No?

I have never been much of an Apple person so I am both amused and annoyed by the lack of information which ships with the Touch. The "available online" Features Guide is helpful but even it is lacking in many ways.
Question: Does the Touch have true non-volatile ram? That is, if the device's battery becomes totally, completely, drained, will everything (music, photos, mail, contacts, etc) still exist in memory once it has been recharged? Or will the device need to be "restored" from the host PC?

    Hi iTouchMe,
I do think so (however, I'm not 100% sure). Actually my battery drained completely once and I didn't lose any content.
    Hope this helps!

  • Detecting ram and hard disk using servlet

how to detect RAM and HD using servlet from remote client host. currently i use JIGSAW as JWS...should i use hashtable and runtime class for this problems. please help me...

    well...
    You can't...
You could use the methods in the Runtime class for memory management but they'll return the corresponding values of the server and not the client (Servlets are Server Side Java Applets).
And most of the hardware specs are hidden to JVM and without JNI programming you are unable to detect any hardware type (HW drivers are usually written in C or even in ASM).
So, learn C, figure out how to access devices at low level programming if the information is so important for you and stop dreaming of accessing computer hardware from the web. It would be a serious security risk if it would be possible ;)

  • IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH INSTALLATION ERRORS, REMOVE YOUR NON FACTORY RAM

I was having all kinds of errors with the installation of 10.5, I read about removing non factory ram. I did this and the installation worked just fine with no errors.
Except now I have a new problem where it won't recognize my user name and password. Apple has a post on how to correct this problem. I have done what they said and it does now work.
Now I am on the phone support hold line.....

it is high time for everyone to accept that this is not a end-user error...this is simply a firmware issue Apple engineers choose to ignore
Posting here is extremely unlikely to get Apple's attention.
Have you reported it?  To an Apple Store, AppleCare, a Bug Report, or the Feedback site?  If not, please do so.  See Reporting a Problem to Apple if you're not sure how.

  • Mixing ECC and NECC (Non-ECC) RAM Modules

    Hi,
I have a G5 Dual Core 2.0 with a pair of 512Mb Non-ECC (NECC) RAM installed and I want to upgrade to 3Gb. I'm thinking of getting 2Gb ECC modules and discarding the 1Mb NECC installed. But I came across a phrase in the Apple Manual of my G5 that states "DO NOT MIX ECC and NON-ECC Memory Modules WITHIN A PAIR." Does that mean I can mix ECC and NECC within Memory Banks and NOT within a PAIR? Because in that case I won't have to discard my NECC 1Gb and have a mixed 3Gb Memory!? I'm afraid to actually try it so I would appreciate your insights. Thanks much.
    G5 Dual Core 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Yes. You can mix ECC and nonECC as long as you don't pair the ECC with the nonECC. The computer will just treat all RAM as nonECC.
You can keep the original memory as long as the two 512MB DIMMs are always paired with each other.

  • Will Apple Hardware Test definitely detect RAM errors?

    Hello,
Been having various problems with Leopard/MacBook. Someone suggested running Apple Hardware Test, which I did, in extended + looping mode all night (it cycled 6 times). The test turned up nothing. Can I take this to mean that whatever problems I am having are definitely software related? I am not familiar with the AHT, don't know exactly what it does, nor how I can interpret a "clean" result...
    Many thanks for any advice/tips.

No indeed (just "Colin" is fine...)
My problems have mostly been documented by other people, and I have just been monitoring the discussions on these issues.
Specifically (at the risk of getting off-topic):
    1) inconsistent shared server behaviour: I have 3 other macs at home - an iBook and a G4 MiniMac running Tiger, and a G4 tower, also running Leopard - and most of the time, the tower doesn't show up at all, but I can connect to it via CMD-K, the MiniMac shows up in the sidebar, but won't let me connect, and the iBook, when it is running, behaves normally. Oh, screen sharing doesn't work either: it tries connect but hangs (except for the iBook, which works). I could connect to all four quite normally after upgrading to 10.5.0, using the sidebar icons. Everything worked fine until sometime after the 10.5.1 update, when suddenly everything went pear-shaped. Nothing has changed in the configs of the other machines, and the iBook and the MiniMac are identical in terms of software config (but behave differently as regards this problem?!?)
Closing Airport and reopening it makes the icons reappear in the sidebar (all of them, G4 tower included), as does relaunching the Finder, but doesn't change the behaviour: I still can't connect. When I try to use the sidebar icon for the tower, it disappears (the icon...)
As far as I can tell, trying to operate shares from the G4 tower works as Apple intended (although I admit I have not exhaustively tested every option, as I don't have unlimited time...)
    2) Lost my printer connections, both at work and at home. I managed to reestablish them at work, but I tried so many things that finally I'm not sure what actually worked. No dice at home (shared printer on the MiniMac... same problem as (1) I guess.)
    3) the dreaded Keynote spontaneous reboot problem (I placed a reply about that last night here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6630702#6630702
    4) diverse weird things, like
4a)iCal which had doubled all my events the last time I opened it. I had to manually delete one copy of every event I had entered, whereas I made these entries several weeks ago, and had consulted them many times... I'm thinking this is perhaps a result of the brutal reboots caused by (3)? Having deleted all the doubles, iCal seems to be behaving normally again.
4b)screen resolutions on my slave screen suddenly failing to select properly. I move my MacBook between two different external monitors, one at work, one at home, and their resolutions are different. Initially the MacBook had no trouble detecting and correctly setting the resolutions for the two screens, then suddenly my home screen went weird on me, and required a manual reset. Again, this was a once-off, and does not seem to be repeating (yet).
4c)sluggish performance with some apps that are normally quite snappy, like Firefox, which seems to hang a lot loading pages, Keynote (saving is often painfully slow), and indeed, trying to copy a 250Mb file from the tower to the MacBook via Airport (having connected using CMD-K) said it was going to take 33 hrs, which I thought was a bit rich...
4d) hot-swapping a usb pin for a keyboard+optical mouse receiver from the tower to the MacBook sometimes causes something inexplicable to happen to the MacBook's keyboard: both the Caps and the NumLock LEDs come on, and the keyboard has jumped into some config other than what it is normally in (French). I have not been able to determine what the keyboard actually thinks it is when this occurs (3 times now). The command keys (ctrl, alt, cmd) do not appear to work at all. Rebooting corrects it.
All up, pretty irritating, and a huge time waster, as you can well imagine. I stuck a bit of a rant on the discussions the other day in a moment of intense frustration, which got zapped by the moderators (probably not unreasonably!), but not before someone replied suggesting that it might be bad RAM, hence my questions here.

  • Having Problems with Powerbook After installing New(non-apple) ram

I had a total of 768 mb of ram on my Powerbook G4 1.5 but I decided that I wanted to max it out to 1.25 gb. So I went out to the store and bought a used but tested 1gb Patriot ram chip to replace my 512mb . I put it in and went to system info to see if my computer detected it, and it did, it reported that I had 1.25gb just as I wanted. The next morning I was excited about using my newly upgraded computer ( I left it in sleep all night I don't know if that could have caused any problems) and when i turned it on first thing i got was that semi-transparent shut down your computer screen when OSX has experienced a problem, I had never seen this error message before, I can tell you I was pretty angry. I restarted my powerbook and then I logged in, I used Onyx and forced to run maintenance, thinking that might help, but again the comp crashed when i tried to open Onyx. and then again the next time trying to open Entourage, then AGAIN the next time trying to open Safari. What is going ON!? Now I am on my laptop again but i took out the 1gb and put back in my apple 512mb, so far so good but why did my 1gb not work?? I would like to have 1.25gb so ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Eric

Acctually yes it was returnable and I did return it. But before i saw your comment I bought a new not pre-owned chip of the same kind, it also didnt work so I will take your advice and purchase a chip that supports bus slewing, maybe i'll go for the more expensive ones just for some added security
By the way thanks for the help,
    Eric

  • Anyone using non Apple ram with standard heatspreaders?

    Hi,
Is anyone using non standard Apple ram with normal sized heatsink/heatspreaders and if so have you had any problems?
I can find ram for the same spec that works but they only have the standard thin silver heatspreader attached and am concerned about running temps etc.
If anyones using these modules without problems, please post here!
    Thanks.

Might want to read this article and it has some good information to help you decide.

  • Failure to detect RAM on P6N SLI Platinum

    Hi,
I am having problems with new Motherboard and RAM.  I cant get the system to boot consistently.
No OS installed and BIOS at FailSafe for most testing.
During boot the system will hang. The POST code from the D Bracket 2 is
Memory Detection Test - Testing onboard memory size. The D-LED will hang if the memory module is damaged or not installed properly
With 2 sticks of RAM in either dual or single channel mode I only can boot about 10% of the time.  I have tried all combinations of slots and it makes no noticeable difference.
With 1 Stick RAM installed I can't boot about third to half the time.  Different slots seem to all act the same.
    When it is working it goes in groups 3 to 7.  For example B B B B F F F F F B B B B B B F F F B B B  F F F F F F F F F F B B B B B B F F F F F F F F F where B is able to boot and F is failure to boot.
When no RAM in installed it hangs at the same Memory Detection Test as to be expected.  It only gives the continuous beep to indicate missing RAM about 4 or 5 power cycles.
Also tried setting RAM options to 667 MHz & Auto or voltage 2V & Auto, 800Mhz 5-5-5-18-2T @ 1.9v (Corsair recommended) did not seem to make any difference.
If the system does boot there are no issues.  RAM testing with Memtest-86 on single stick passes OK.
    Any Ideas?

Does your computer run stable once booted?  If so, you might want to flash to the latest beta bios and see if it helps.  Also, if you can make it into windows, run cpu-z from cpuid.com .  Check out what it says about what your ram spd is and what the current settings are.  For me, the auto setting for ram in the bios does not work correctly.  In fact, it often set my ram timings to fast in caused me instability and no boot issues until I manually set them.  I only figured this out from cpu-z.

  • BIOs not detecting ram properly

I have a K8N Neo2 Platinum, with paired 2 x 512 meg of Corsair DRR 400 ram (TWINX1024-3200C2PT), it should be picked up as DDR400 Dual channel, but when the pc boots up its picked up as DDR333 single channel - i am assuming this is wrong!
I have updated the BIOs, the ram is in the right slots for dual channel
I am guessing that i need to set the ram settings to auto in the bios, Corsair state the ram should be run at 200mhz 2.5-3-3-6, but i am not sure which settings in the BIOs the 2.5-3-3-6 refer to, could someone please explain what each number is in the bios settings please! i am hoping this will sort out my system, although it works, it is benchmarking lower than before i upgraded it!!!
i used to get 15000 of 3Dmark2001, now i get 12000, (though it keeps pausing when the demos run, but it doesnt in 3Dmark03 which also gives a low score), i should be getting 23000+
    please help!!!

  • Are there any memory and cpu logging extensions that is addon, not process oriented, that will detect ram/cpu usage, even within the main Firefox process?

And why wasn't this a feature in FF already? I hear it was, but it was dropped in FF4 as part of some kind of feature freeze? Why was this most important of all features removed, and how can I patch this? So I can use my browser properly again. Maybe an addon that would make about-addonsmemory detect that kind of stuff would do, maybe something that forces all addons to operate within the plugin container. Or maybe just something that will moniter everything right.

The CPU usage part is the most important

  • Non-conforming RAM

I'm wondering if I can use 2 RAM sticks from a 2010 iMac in a Late 2012 machine - it's easy to try and I might experiment with this just for the heck of it.
The only difference in the spec is speed -
    1333 MHz  (2010)
    vs
    1600 MHz  (2012)
The machine I'd like to try this on currently has 16GB (2x8) with 2 open slots.

is it really worth the risk?
    Thank you for the reply!
Therein lies the question - what risk?  Real - or merely perceived, for not staying between the lines?  Now, if there was evidence that slower RAM could cause the computer to start on fire, well, we wouldn't try it right?  :-)
Thanks for the referrals too however I wouldn't use a high end reseller, and certainly not ask them because their job is to SELL memory, not help people avoid buying more.  Amazon, Ebay and others are far more cost effective paths to purchase RAM without excessive markups - and many RAM manufacturers these days offer lifetime warranty.
Anyway, I'll probably just sell the old RAM and buy the extra 1600MHz sticks when I need them - for now it's not something that's urgent so I was just toying with this idea.

  • MacBook Pro 13" (2012) non-retina ram upgrade.

Will upgrading my MBP 13" from 4GB to 8GB will make a big difference ?
MBP does get slow at times and i do tend to use 4+ apps most the time.
Will it boost my boot up time too ?

Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.
Does it help to have more RAM? Usually, "yes", if you are running out of RAM during use. You may find that the computer seems faster, but this is because memory shortage is bogging things down.
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
OS X Mavericks- About Activity Monitor
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
