Non-embeddable fonts and UTF-16

Our software allows the user to create text items, and choose a font for
them. The text may include any Unicode character (including those from
the supplementary planes with code points greater than 216), and the
font may be any of those installed on the machine.
We implement a Export-to-PDF operation which works fine with embeddable fonts, but we do not understand how we should do this in the case where the user's chosen font is not legally embeddable. The PDF specification says "If the TrueType font program is not embedded ... only predefined CMaps may be used". But there does not seem to be a predefined CMap suitable for arbitrary Unicode characters: all the CMaps which are described as accepting a UTF-16 encoding seem to be specific to either Chinese, Japanese or Korean.
We would welcome suggestions on how to proceed!

Oh - and make sure that you recommend that they contact the font foundry and complain! The more complaints they hear - it might actually get them to stop the silly non-embedding policies!

  • How should I organize and disable non-english fonts.

    I'm a graphic designer and I'm having trouble organizing all of these random hebrew/japanese/chinese fonts that I never use.
    I don't want to screw up my system, but I also don't want to scroll through 200 fonts every time I want to find one.
    Is there an easy way I can find all of the non-english fonts and disable them?
    Fontbook freezes and crashes all the time for me, so I've been using Suitcase Fusion free trial for a few days and disabled a bunch of fonts through it. Though, it prevents me from disabling anything considered a "System Font" which is fine, only having the necesccary non-english fonts is okay, I just don't want 75% of my font list in my adobe applications to be un-usable fonts.
    I guess my problem is that by default, some fonts are pre-disabled on OS X, and should I run into problems, I want a way to easily re-enable these fonts if I need to. Also, since I've disabled so many fonts, I dont' know what ones are enabled by default. How would I go about restoring all of my fonts?
    I think it'd be nice to be able to sort all of the fonts by what language they're in. But I don't know what language the font is because I don't speak those languages. Another problem is that you can't organize local fonts in Suitcase. I think using fontbook would be my best option for this, before switching back to Suitcase for regular use, but I still have the problem of restoring my already disabled fonts correctly, and figuring out which fonts are in what language. Could anyone help me out with this?

  • Removing Non-System Fonts

    Hello,
    I have messy fonts folders, too full.
    I want to remove non-essential fonts and start again.
    How can I best accomplish this?
    Thanks in advance!
    Lawrence.

    "too full" for what?
    This kind of exercise can be interesting - perhaps more interesting than you want. It will take time to figure out exactly which fonts you can get rid of. And you will most likely make mistakes and some applications will look strange or in worst case not start at all afterwards.

  • How to generate a report with Courrier font and no horizontal lines?

    Hi guys,
    In a wizard-generated report, I want to accomplish the following things.
    1. Print table data (I'm only printing one column) in a non-proportional font (e.g. Courrier).
    2. Suppress the vertical lines that Apex automatically puts in between each record.
    How can these two things be accomplished?
    Thanks,
    Kim
    P.S. I'm running Apex 4.1.

    Fair enough. I'll try to be more specific. Assume you're running a query from SQL Developer on a single column from a single table. In the table, the data is already formatted to be displayed using a non-proportional font (old-time religion here). SQL Developer will show the contents of the column formatted exactly like the author intended (non-proportional font and no "helpful" horizontal lines between the rows). That's exactly what I want Apex to do. In the rectangular area that Apex creates for the report contents display, I want Apex to show the rows from that table in a non-proportional font with no horizontal lines between the rows. The report query will be just about as simple as possible (i.e. select col1 from tab1 order by col 2). How should I go about achieving this result?
    Thank you so much!

  • When trying to upload a PDF to an interactive site I get the announcement:"The attached PDF file references a non-embedded font Tahoma. Please remove file, embed the font and reattach." How do I embed this, or in fact any other font ?

    When trying to upload a PDF to an interactive site I get the announcement: "The attached PDF file references a non-embedded font Tahoma. Please remove file, embed the font and reattach."
    I could not get rid of the Tahoma font in the WORD file.
    How do I embed this, or in fact any other font ?

    Thank you very much !
    Indeed, I was unaware of the enormous number of options that can be selected when converting a WORD file to PDF.
    I went thru the settings and found the right one for embedding the fonts.
    Thanks again !

  • Non supported fonts, how to finnd and replace them

    After opening my book in the new IBA version it found non-supported fonts . But how to find them easily and change it by hand?

    The new iBA is supposed to embed such fonts so that it doesn't matter whether iOS supports them or not.  Have you tried publishing your book and viewing it on an iOS device to see whether your fonts are displayed?

    Hi Johan,
    While exporting the images from photoshop, try to add 1% transparency and save them as pngs to prevent Muse from compressing those images. Let me know if that makes a difference.

  • Embeddable Fonts for EPUB?

    I'm using ID CS6 to create EPUBs. When I try to export anything other than the usual Times New Roman, or other basic fonts, the fonts don't show up in the exported EPUB.
    For instance, I've tried using Minion Pro, Warnock, Lucida, etc. and all I get at the other end is either a bizarre substitution, or Times New Roman.
    Every paragraph and character in my ID docs is assigned a paragragh or character style, which includes export tagging, and usually a class. I've had people on forum boards tell me I'm foolish for assigning classes, but how else are you supposed to distinguish between two h2 styles with different attributes?
    Rather than place text from Word, which I've noticed imports a host of other problems on export, I copy the text into a simple text editing program, make it plain text, then copy and paste into ID, then apply styles to format. The embed fonts checkbox is checked when exporting.
    What am I missing? What qualifies as an embeddable font? I should mention that I am viewing the epub in ADE. Could this be the problem?
    Update: Just noticed that none of the character styles I've tagged as span are coming through either. The em and strong character styles work, but nothing tagged span will be properly styled in the EPUB. I even tried applying styling to characters without creating a style and it doesn't work. For instance, SMALL CAPS come through as small caps.

    What are your export settings? Where are you viewing the EPUB? Have you cracked it open to see if there is a fonts folder? Does the CSS show the proper font.
    Finally, nothing wrong with a class if it has a purpose. For main body text you can use a p tag without a class. If the first paragraph after an h2 has a special format you can use h2+p to create that stylinging in the css. Of course, this assumes a knowledge of CSS and the willingness to crack open the EPUB to work on it.

  • I would like to print links as regular text i.e. not underlined or in a different font and color.

    I have created a page with my resumé, using Dreamweaver CS4 on my iMac (running OS X 10.6.6).  You can see the page here: http://www.peterforkes.com/Resume.html
    It looks great when it is on the screen, but when I print it I would like the links to not be underlined and also to be displayed in the same font (and color) of the text surrounding it (a link is largely useless on a piece of paper, if it it not showing the URL).
    So, I created a stylesheet called "print.css" and have this in it:
    a:link {
    text-decoration: none;
    In my html document (Resume.html)  I have this code, at the top:
    <link href="_css/Resume.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" />
    <link href="_css/Print.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="print" />
    Now, things such as the graphics in my document do not print out (this is how I want it) but links seesm to be doing unexpected things for me.  As I mentioned, when I print the page I would like them to:
    a) not print with an underline (which I would expect the code snippet shown above to do).
    b) I would like the link color to be the same as the surrounding text (I have links in several places, such as in <h2>, <h3> and <p>).
    c) I would like the link to have the same font and text size as the surrounding text.
    Any help is always appreciated.
    Peter A. Forkes

    You've solved it for a:link but you may print the page with the <a> tag in link or visited state so you need to cover both.
    In http://www.peterforkes.com/_css/Print.css
    change
    a:link {
    text-decoration: none;
    to
    a:link, a:visited {
    color: #333;
    text-decoration: none;

  • Is there a way to prevent Mail from loading non system fonts?

    For over a year, and a system OS upgrade, Mail has been taking 7 - 10 minutes to load all the thousands of fonts I have on my computer for graphic design. This started with Snow Leopard on my 2009 Mac Pro (10 GB RAM, 2 TB HDD). At first I didn't know why the computer was taking such a long time to finish boot up. So I reformatted the drive--zeroing it out. Then I installed Mavericks and reinstalled everything else. Finally I tried logging the system activity during startup and noticed that something to do with fonts took up the biggest chunk of this time. Because Mavericks loads any programs you leave running at shut down, I saw that if Mail had the fonts window open, the list of fonts would slowly grow, filling up with the many font families I use for my work. I called tech support for my font management utility but they say the fonts are not in the system and and shouldn't affect the system during startup. In the end I gave up and just go drink a few coffees after hitting the start button. It's like going back to the early days 25 years ago.
    Can I stop Mail from loading any non-system fonts? I never use anything but the default font.

    Hey SchenkerBob,
    It is possible to disable non-system fonts temporarily for all applications using the Font Book application. This article explains how to do so -
    Mac Basics: Font Book - Apple Support
    In particular -
    Disable and enable specific fonts
    In situations where you'd like to prevent a font from being available in applications, but you don't want to completely remove the font from your Mac, you can use Font Book to disable the font.
    In Font Book, click "All Fonts" in the Collection column.
    Click the name of the font in the Font column.
    Choose Disable "Font Name" Family from the Edit menu.
    Since it might be problematic to have to disable each font individually, you can create a collection of fonts and disable the collection. See the article for how to create a font collection -
    Organize fonts as collections
    When working with fonts, you may discover that you use certain fonts frequently, but rarely use others. To make it easier to find the font you are looking for, you can organize your fonts into collections.
    From the Font Book File menu, choose New Collection.
    Type in a name for the new collection.
    Click "All Fonts" in the Collection column.
    Drag the fonts that you want from the Font column onto the name of your new collection in the Collection column.
    You can then disable collections of fonts -
    You can also disable or enable all fonts in a collection: Click the name of the collection in the Collection column, then choose Disable "Collection Name" or EnableCollection Name" " from the Edit menu.
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Happy computing,
    Brett L

  • Cannot change font for UTF-8 pages in FF 4.0.1

    No matter whether I change Options > Content > Default font, or go to Options > Content > Advanced and set Sans Serif for Other Languages, nothing changes—for instance, on this forum. Everything's still Times New Roman from the looks of it.
    The Sans Serif font for Other Languages is set to Arial.
    There's no Unicode entry in the list. The Other Languages is the closest I could find.
    I have Options > Content > Advanced > Allow pages to choose their own fonts… unchecked.
    I made similar changes for Western, and that worked—for pages detected as having ISO-8859-1 encoding.
    Is this a bug? Or am I doing something wrong?
    <rant>
    On a more general note, I think that the font setup in Firefox is so over-complicated. I personally want all my pages in a single font, and I don't care if some weird languages are displayed incorrectly with it. I bet that most people do want the same, even them who speak those weird languages. It's just a matter of picking one font that works for the languages you care about.
    Now that might not work perfectly for everybody so there should be an advanced option—an ability to add overrides. It should be similar to how it works now but the list of overrides should be user-customizable and '''empty by default.''' So that we regular people don't bother ourselves with encodings and languages we're never going to use.
    I wonder if I'm the only one who's disappointed with FF's font settings. Couldn't find anything on this topic on the 'net.
    </rant>

    '''Xircal:''' this does not seem to be the case. When I go to Options > Content > Advanced > Other Languages I can see that Proportional is set to Sans Serif, and that Sans-Serif is set to Arial. The following line is also in my about:config:
    font.default.x-unicode user set string sans-serif
    '''cor-el:''' yes this is the address. While on this page, if I go to View > Character Encoding, the active selection is Unicode (UTF-8).
    '''Edit:''' if I manually change this site's encoding to Western (ISO-8859-1) the font changes to that I specified for Western encoding in Advanced font options.

  • How to Embed Fonts and make Grayscale in Acrobat Pro 9 PDF

    I supplied my printer with a PDF but he says that I need to "Embed The Fonts" in the PDF.
    I made the original document in MS WORD and then I created the PDF in Acrobat Pro 9 but nowhere
    along the way did I see anything that asked me to Embed The Fonts.
    He also says that the type is in RGB but it needs to be in Grayscale.
    When I created the PDF I didn't see any option along the way that gave me a choice between
    RGB and Grayscale.
    Any ideas how to achieve these two effects while going from an MS WORD document to a PDF using
    Acrobat Pro 9 please?
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    Sorry to bother you with my problem but I wondered if you could explain a little bit more about things I didn't understand.
    1 - you said > On a Mac there is no advantage to using the Word plug-in.
    Do you mean that I can type directly into Acrobat?
    I thought that a document needed to be created in a word processor first before I could turn it into a PDF.
    Is that incorrect then?
    2 - > Create the pdf file a print file menu gives you greater control.
    I do apologize but I did not understand this statement either, could you please expand on it a little (to a non-techie.)
    3 - > If you use the Press job option setting, the fonts will be embedded.
    I can't find Press job option setting anywhere - I am using Acrobat pro 9 but there doesn't seem to be a menu with Press
    anywhere, could you please expand on this a little bit too please.
    4 - > If the pdf file has already been created it can be converted to greyscale using the Preflight or Convert Colors
    under Advanced -> Print Production.
    I understood this part and I executed it according to your instructions so thank you for that.
    Unfortunately I couldn't find out how to embed my fonts and my printer charged me $75 to do that
    so I was pretty upset about not being able to understand that part of your explanation.
    Since the printer was able to embed the fonts in a document that was already a PDF then it must be possible
    to embed fonts after a PDF has been created, is that correct?
    If that is correct then i don't know how I could not find how to do it because I looked everywhere for that
    ability but I could not find how to do it.
    I'd be very grateful for any further help you could give, thank you.
