Non-English artist name sorting

Hello! I just bought my iPod Touch today, and it's my first ever iPod so i'm still getting used to it. I have a question, though, regarding how artists are sorted.
I bought my Touch in Japan (finally found a store with stock!), and I would say 90% of my music is in Japanese. However, the artists whose names are written in kana/kanji just get lumped at the bottom past "Z" and under the "." part of the alphabet, rather than either being appropriately sorted in under the appropriate English letter, or having their own kana section in the list.
Is this just how iPods are, or is there something that I can do to have them sort in properly?

I'm curious -- does Windows Vista sort them the way you want them in iTunes or elsewhere? As far as I know, the international standards for sorting multilingual lists would always keep different scripts separate, and follow Unicode order for example for Kana and then separately for Kanji.

Spool non english character names to a file

We have a table which has around a million rows. We just need to select two columns(out of which one is a name field with english and non english names) and spool the data to a file. The problem is that through sqldeveloper, if I choose csv or dsv option, the non english names, like chines charaters etc show up as question marks. Is there a better way or format to do this. I tries xls. But although it goes through successfully, when I open the excel file, it has nothing. I was able to do it for around 200000 rows in excel.
Any suggesstions?

1) data storage - incorrect byte value is stored
2) data presentation - incorrect character is displayed.
Can the utility utilized to view the *CSV file actually display the non-ASCII value properly?
can you inspect the *CSV file using an hexadecimal editor? what do you see inside the file?

Connecting to Wireless AP with non-english SSID name

Hi everyone
I have a wireless AP with a non-english name ( The name is "IsolÈ coffee"), when I do scan for wireless network in Mac OS X it will not show this network and even if I use iStumbler it will show it but it will not able to connect to it
if I use any Windows PC/Linux it can connect to the wireless AP with no issue
is it possible in anyway to connect to this wireless AP (and NO I can't change the SSID name because I don't own it, it's a public AP)

This post is a little old, i don't know if it's proper to add a reply. I just got the same problem here, and hope someone would work on it. The ssid is some chinese characters, and i don't have authority to change it. Same as what AhmadT mentionded, airport couldn't find anything, even if the ssid is typed in manually, it doesn't work.
The only workaround i could find is to use the other wifi card (USB ones), and have it driven in WindowsXp which is running in VMWARE Fusion. so that i could access the wifi-router and internet in the vm-machine.

Artist Name Sorting

Is there a way to sort my iTunes library (both on the Mac and iPhone) by the artist's last name? For example, Dylan instead of Bob, Lennon instead of John, etc.?

Yes, change the *Sort Artist* and *Sort Album Album* to, for example, *Dylan, Bob*. You can do this for a single track, choose one he also composed and change *Sort Composer* too, then right/option/cmd-click on that track and click *Apply Sort Field > All Matching Fields* which should update every other Bob Dylan track in your library.
Note there is a little organisational bug in current builds which might mean that the artist's name doesn't move in the column browser until you close and reopen iTunes.

Punctuation for non-English artists (classical recordings)

Although for a good deal of my CDs the data has been correctly recorded by Gracenotes, there are times when the artists' names are not included. Just for completeness it would be good to include the correct characters with graves, circumflexes etc. I notice that previously supplied information usually includes the punctuation. There seems not to be any reference in the menu bar of iTunes to enable me to do it. Can anyone provide a remedy please?
If the solution is to use two key strokes with, for example, the option key first, where can I find a list of punctuation marks and the corresponding key strokes required for the various marks?

Displaying non English file name in portlet

Hi,
I have a portlet that display all the files in a directory that is not on any of the Plumtree servers (portal, collaboration, etc ...). This directory could be a local directory or a directory on a network but not on any of the plumtree servers. How could I display a non English file in the portlet? I am using Plumtree portal 5.0.4J.

Contact bug with non English last name

I put the chinese name as last name, so that they will show up on the contact next to the English first name ie. George [chinese], this worked no problem, but when I send sms to more than one such contact it will fail with "xxx is not on the contact...", but I can send to one contact at a time no problem. I reset the phone and re-do the contact via OVI suite but still the same problem, the only way to make it work is to put the chinese as part of the first name, this looks good on the contact and can send sms to multi contact no problem, but this is a very stupid workaround, I don't have this problem on previous N phones.

Sorting artist names different with English and German iTunes

I just got a iPod and theres only one thing that bothers me. I used to use OS X with English language and then artists are sortet after the name, ignoring the "the" in many names ("the Beatles" sorted under "B"). I recently switched the laguage to German and then all the artist with "the" in the name (like "the Beatles" ) are sorted under "T" in iTunes and on my iPod. Is is possible to change this? I want to use german language on my Mac, but I still want the artists names sorted like they used to be.
I´m using iTunes 7.0.2 and OS X 1.4.3.

You will want to refer to this article in the Apple Knowledge Base which explains the new sorting rules that have been introduced in recent versions of iTunes.
To workaround it, you will have to make use of the also recently introduced Sorting tab that is described at the bottom of the above-referenced article.
You can get "The Who" sorted as "Who" by entering Who in the Artist Sort field.
Information you enter in the Sort fields will not change what is displayed for those items, only how it is sorted.

Capitalise Artist Names

A bit of an esoteric request but...
As is pretty standard I have my Artist names sorted by Surname, but listed as First Name/Surname
So for eg Johnny Cash appears in the list before Bob Dylan.
All fine, but to make the alpahbetic listing clearer when scanning the list I'd like to have the surname capitalised.
So for eg Johnny CASH, Bob DYLAN
This is straight forward enough when I add new artists - I simply write their Surname in capitals but...
For existing entries iTunes is not at all co-operative - it already has the artist name written in lower case in its memory and insists on listing it as such.
Looks like I need to do something like
(a) give the artist a new temporary name,
(b) erase the original name from itunes memory,
(c) rename the artist in the format I want.
(a) and (c) are straight forward enough - any suggestions on how I can achieve: (b) erase the original name from memory ?
or... is there a better way of achieving what I'm trying to do ?

The problem may be you are adding something at the end. I can edit the middle part of a tag with autocomplete behavior without it changing back to the original as long as I don't try to change anything at the end of the tag.
So I can change:
Cash, Johnny
to:
CASH, Johnny
without problem as long as I don't put an X at the end because it is only changing things at the end of the line
that triggers the autocomplete behavior.
If instead of going back and editing "cash" I start typing 'CASH Joh...' then it triggers autocomplete. I have to edit only "Cash".

Wrong sorting of non-English characters (iTunes 11.2)

Since version 11.2 of iTunes, there is a problem with sorting of names with non-English characters (such as ž, š, č, ř or other in Czech). It seems that iTunes completely omits these characters when sorting. As an example, I have Čajkovskij (which is the Czech spelling of Tchaikovsky) among artists in my library and it is currently sorted between Adele and Alan Parsons Project, i.e. it seems that the character Č has been completely omitted while sorting and thus the artist is sorted as Ajkovskij.
All my ID3 tags are of version 2.3 and in Unicode, thus this should not be any encoding problem. I even tried to change the ID3 tags to version 2.4, i.e. UTF-8, and it did not help.
I think that there must be many more people experiencing this problem. Not everyone has only English or ASCII names in the library and I am surprised that I could not find anything on this bug anywhere on the net yet.

XML Dataset - Sorting non english characters

I've been playing with spry on a production site for more
than a year now. It's turned out to be a great solution in many
situations in spite of being a beta release.
I've found an issue concerning the sorting of text data (in
this case, coming from an XML file). You can find the example page

It's in Spanish but i guess you won't need a translation to
understand what's going on; besides you can always check the source
code if so you wish.
Works fine, though I still have some polishing to do. The
most important part of which is fixing the sort order that spry
gives me by default.
If you click on the "go to last page link" (»), located
below the table/dataset area, you will see that after letter Z come
the words, in this case last names, starting with letter A, but
with a tilde on them. I've devised a workaround, but that requires
creating an extra column with everything converted to only English
characters. My list is already 4000 records long and takes a few
seconds to load. It's definitely going to get much longer in the
years to come and I wish I will be able to give my users the
ability to sort by any column they wish. So, I can't just be adding
columns and duplicating data all around.
Is there a way to tell spry that Á should be sorted as
if it was A (not after A, not before it, and definitely not at the
end of the list), that Ñ should come right after N, and so on?

Sad thing that there wasn't a solution, though.
But, then I guess you must be aware that spry is being used
and will be used by a huge ammount of non English speaking clients
of Adobe. Namely those of us that have Spanish, French, German,
Japanese, Chinese or any other as their primary language. And all
of us would greatly appreciate a not so English-centered solution,
for such a commonplace feature as sorting is.
Given this situation, what chances do you think there are
that Adobe will be developping the necessary language specific
plugins for spry's sorting capabilities? And, how soon would that
be?
In the meantime, I will start trying to do it myself. It
would be fantastic if you coukd give me any hints on how to start,
javascript is not my strongest point but I think I can crack it out
and have a little fun while I'm at it, too.

Oracle 10g - Defining the column name in Non English

Hi Experts,
I have an exisitng application which is developed on Windows using ASP Technology and uses Oracle 10g 10.1.0.2.0.
The application is supported with an instance of Data Base within which multiple tablespaces are created for different clients. The application is developed in such a way that some of the tables arecreated dynamically and the columns are named using the data entered through the UI.
This application needs to be globalized now. The problem is, the column name entered through the UI can be in any language based on the client's settings and those values in turn will be used for naming the columns in the tables.
1) Can I have the column names to be named using non english characters in Oracle 10g DB? If so,
1.1) what should I do to configure the exisiting Oracle instance to support it?
1.2) To what level is that configuration possible, is it per DB instance level (or) can it be done at Tablespace level. I would like to configure each tablespace to host tables with columns defined with different languages, say for example, tablespace 1 will have tables with Japaenese column names and tablespace 2 will have tables with German column names?
2) What should I do to make my entire DB to support unicode data i.e., to accept any language strings. Currently all strings are declared as VarChar2, should I change all VarChar2 to NVarChar2 (or) is there a way to retain the VarChar2 as is and make some database wide setting?
Please note that I do not have an option of retaining the column in English as per the Business Requirement.

1. Yes, you can.
SQL> create table ÜÝÞ( ßàá number(10));
Table created.
SQL> insert into ÜÝÞ values (10);
1 row created.1.1 and 1.2 and 2. You can choose UTF as your default character set. It allows the user of non-English characters in VARCHAR columns in your whole database. It is not per tablespace.
SQL> create table ÜÝÞ( ßàá varchar2(100));
Table created.
SQL> insert into ÜÝÞ values ('âãäçìé');
1 row created.

Alphabetical sorting of Music Artists [Name of Artist] All Songs?

When I go to Music>Artists>[Name of Artist]>All Songs, it sorts the songs by album, is there a way to have this sorted alphabetically instead, without regard to album? Basically I want a way to view an alphabetical list of songs by a certain artist without making a million playlists. This would only apply to Music>Artists>[Artist]>All Songs, I want everything else to stay as is. This is for a current gen Ipod Classic. Also, would doing this (if it's even possible) mess up the sorting of artists who I only have one album for (I would want these to stay sorted by track number)?

Regarding the playlists, just click on the NAME column within each playlist to sort the list by name. Make sure the shuffle icon is not selected before you do this. Your playlists will be in Track Name order now. (You must do this for EACH playlist)
I believe when choosing an individual artist, then choosing all albums by that artist, the tracks will be sorted by album name then track number per album, so the ALBUMS will be played in alphabetical order, but the songs will play in the track order of each album. There is no way to chage this, as far as I know.
There may be a workaround for this by removing all the track numbers from all of your files. However, this will mess up your album order if you ever wish to listen to individual albums.
To each his own, I know, but hearing all songs in alphabetical order drives me insane.

I'm using BizTalk 2010 SMTP Adapter for sending mail with attachments by setting them via property SMTP.Attachments

I have files in several languages (In English and in Russian partialy) for the example
My attachment list looks like this:
"C:\Temp\Files\EnglishNameFile.xml | C:\Temp\Files\RussianFileName_РусскоеИмя.xml";
After the sending Mail with this attachments the second file (it's name partialy in Russian) received without this part name
(The non-english part of name is DISAPPEARS)
like this:
RussianFileName_.xml ( must be RussianFileName_РусскоеИмя.xml)
The NON-English part is DISAPPEARS!!!
And if i have file that doesn't have latin latters (non-english) at all than BizTalk SMTP Adapter change name
to default one like ATT41233.xml
I found this behaviour occur in other non-english languages also!!!
Unfortunately i'm not found any info about this

There is an option of the Multipart message that controls the filename and the charset used to control how the attachment is treated, including content-transfer encoding.

How to load file thru reader which contains non-english char in file name

I want to know how to load file in english machine thru reader which contains non-english chars in file names (eg. 置顶.pdf)
as LoadFile gives error while passing unicode converted file name.
