Non-existent bluetooth keyboard reason MBA won't boot

My January 2012 Macbook Air has been rendered a brick. For a few days the cursor would be stuck in place them would become unstuck and usable but slowly worsened to brick status. On the way it gave a message at reboot saying that my BLuetooth Keyboard could not be found and to make it "discoverable".

              There isn't a keyboard connected
I was not using a wireless keyboard but that does not mean that someone else was not trying to hack into my computer at the hotel I was staying in.
I tried the SMC reset others have suggested in other posts but it did nothing.
I connected a USB keyboard which seemed to get a beep from the Macbook, but since it had no mouse attached I was unable to  move the cursor at login post boot.
Any suggestions? I am in Singapore where there is no Apple Store but there are probably authorized repair shops. Hopefully someone has an answer here.
THanks!

A USB keyboard and USB mouse did allow me to get the Macbook Air to function so I could see that I have OS X 10.7.5 Lion installed. After doing the SMC reset a couple of times the trackpad worked very briefly only to get stuck again. So I think I must have a faulty keyboard.
I read somewhere about PRAM or NVRAM reset but this may not apply to Macbook Air, perhaps only to Macbook Pro?

My Apple Bluetooth Keyboard (2003, White) won't pair with my MacBook Pro anymore.  It seems just randomly became unresponsive.  I took them both to the genius bar and everything worked fine.  When I got home, NOTHING worked! Any Ideas??
The batteries are fine, and it will not pair with my wife's MacBook either.

iPhones and Macbooks cannot pair to each other except for internet sharing.
Most Bluetooth operations between them (like Airdrop) do not require they be paired.
What exactly are you attempting to do by pairing them?

  • Using the Number Pad on my non-Apple bluetooth keyboard on MBP Retina

Hi, I was able to easily connect my bluetooth keyboard to my MBP Retina, but my Number Pad doesnt seem to work. I was trying to find an option to allow the numpad in keyboard settings, but couldnt find anything. I was hoping somebody would know what to do so that I could use my Number Pad for punching in numbers on Excel, online, etc. It's a huge pain to use the straight line of keys above the letters and I'm used to using the number pad. FYI, I'm using a Logitech MX 5500 Keyboard, if that makes any difference. Any thoughts are appreciated!

    All right,
Not really clear yet but try either pressing the two shift key for a few seconds (or pressing many times both at the same time) or pressing shift with space. It worked with me. Funy that the problem only happens in excel.

  • Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse/Trackpad won't automatically connect after installing Boot Camp

    Hey guys!
Another peculiar thing happened to me today with my 3-week-old maxed-out 2012 iMac (other than it kernel panicking when I powered it down the other day...did I mention this was 3 weeks old?).
After installing Boot Camp which I will never do again, my iMac (on the OS X side) no longer recognizes my stock Apple Wireless Keyboard, Magic Trackpad, or Magic Mouse automatically, until I press a button on the keyboard and wait 5 seconds, click the trackpad and wait 5 seconds, or click the mouse and wait 5 seconds.
(The Windows 8 Boot Camp side pairs with the devices immediately after Windows boots, which leads me to believe that the bluetooth devices are defaulting to look for Windows.)
One of my huge fears I had when considering purchasing an iMac is that the Bluetooth devices wouldn't immediately connect. Being a power-user with former Mac notebooks and working understandably fast having owned a web development company for 8 years now and not having to worry about Bluetooth device pairing, I'd like to think this fear is substantiated. But after first use (before installing Windows 8 with Boot Camp Assistant) it functioned normally and the iMac would automatically discover my peripherals and connect them by the time time computer turned on. I also had no trouble holding the Option key on boot to select a boot device....
Now, ever since I set up Windows 8 on the Boot Camp partition and paired the keyboard/mouse/trackpad to Windows, the Mac side completely ignores the keyboard/mouse/trackpad until I click a button on each.
I'm trying to keep it together but this is raging me out.
I went into Windows, immediately unpaired the 3 peripherals from windows and now use a wired keyboard/mouse with Windows (yay, desk space!), deleted the items entirely from the bluetooth panel, then booted to Mac and did the same thing. I then re-paired the devices to the OS X side andddd...no go! Still doesn't find them automatically. I am extremely upset by this and can't seem to fix it.
To summarize, my two issues are:
    A. The iMac in OS X does not automatically recognize my bluetooth peripherals until I click a button on each and wait a couple seconds for them to pair.
    B. I cannot hold Option to select a boot device (or choose Windows/Mac for example) because the computer doesn't recognize the keyboard until OS X boots and I press a key.
Please...for the love of god...someone help me, and stop me from formatting my entire computer over this issue.

I don't have a logitech mouse, but is it possible that the mouse is going to sleep during the reboot, and is thus unavailable when the OS is looking for it?

  • Non HID Bluetooth keyboard

    Hi.
I scratch a j2me midlet that connects to keyboard via serial (SPP) profile and display bytes received from one. It works fine if use pc instead a keyboard. I only want to know can it really connect to keyboard. If I not mistake some of you have a SPP keyboard (synonyms: any keyboard for Blackberry, dual keyboard, universal keyboard, serial keyboard, non HID keyboard, etc.). Can smb try it with the midlet? • MBA won't boot after software update freeze

    Hi
I have a MBA which was running offices Autoupdate, which for some reason froze, which locked up Finder, so I rebooted it and it now just goes to the apple logo on the grey screen but no further. What the heck has just happened?!

    Germmac,
To remove the disc from your SuperDrive, connect it to the MBA and start up the MBA with the click button pressed down. If that doesn't work, start up the computer holding down the alt button. Once you see the boot screen (allows you to pick hdd to boot from), press the eject key.
For your other problem, start up the computer with the SuperDrive plugged in and with the alt key held down. Once you see the boot screen, insert the OS X install DVD that came with your computer. Select it and press enter. Once loaded, perform an Archive and Install so that you don't lose any of your data. More info on Archive and Install is available here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545

  • MBA won't boot up, passes H/W test

My daughter's MBA stopped booting up recently.  I purchased this unit in late August 2011.  When she started it & walked away to wait for it to start up, she'd come back & find a black screen with the cursor icon.  She brought it to me, and upon start up, the screen shows the Apple icon, white background, and the spiraling busy icon.  It would sit this way for an hour.  Tried rebooting with the Shift key held down, same result.
I ran the extended Apple hardware diagnostics, and everything passed.  I tried calling AppleCare, and they had no ideas beyond a corruption of the solid state hard drive (SSD), and to take it into a local Apple store.
Base on the above information & assuming the Genius at the Apple store would probably do the same, I wiped the SSD and reloaded Lion and her applications (Office 2011).  We'll watch it for any anomalous behavior.  It's working fine since the wipe & reload.
Is there anything else that the Genius bar personnel could do?  Do they have any more extensive diagnostics than the Apple hardware test for MBA?
    Thanks.

Could be one of the "software updates" installd incompletely.  Could be that during one of the several million tiny modifications to the directory structure made during each day that something twitched.
If you keep regular backups then matters like this are easier to fix.
CarbonCopyClone makes a complete copy of the startup disk (including the "I am bootable" flag).  If the internal drive refuses to boot, you can use the "option" key at power-up to boot to the external clone.  Then use that external "running" clone to attempt "permission repair" or "disk repair".
I use CarbonCopyClone and have twice recloned back to my internal drive.  Once to know how to do it.  Once because I did not want the "latest and greatest" Java update, but could not remove it and needed to go "back in time" using the clone.

  • Autonomous Cisco AP1131 had an IOS download, deleted existing IOS, now the AP won't boot

I did a tftp download of 12.3(8) to this AP, which went fine. Then I did a force delete of existing 12.4 flash file and then reloaded the AP. Now, all I get is ap: prompt and no boot with a message saying "system unable to boot because there are no bootable files to boot". Did I miss setting the boot parameters before deleting the 12.4? I have tried the set commands but it does not seem to work. Any ideas, anyone?

  • Connecting Bluetooth Keyboard to N95?

I have an N95 phone and have purchased a non nokia Bluetooth Keyboard (Xema)and I am having problems making it work? It pairs with the phone but then does not work? The seller suggests that you have to remove nokia sofware for their own keyboard, but my phone supplier and Nokia say that this is not possible? Can any one help with advice?

It is up to manufacturers of 3rd party hardware to provide drivers to get their stuff to work on phones. It is not Nokia's responsibility. There's no way Nokia can be expected to provide drivers for all the hardware that's been designed by other manufacturers to work on their phones.
BTW, "wineman" is an unusal user ID. I know someone in the East of France who uses it fairly frequently. If it's you then you can probably guess who I am from my user ID...

  • Lombard won't boot off System disc

    Hi,
I have a problem that I wonder if any of you mac experts can help me with.
My problem is the computer will not boot from a system disc (any system disc) from the CD drive.
I have a Lombard Powerbook that has been running OS 8.6 (I know, I am way behind !) 192 mg RAM (64 in the lower, 128 in the upper from OWC), 4 Gb Hard drive.
The computer runs great in 8.6 - seldom crashes - however, all I have been mainly using it for is word processing.
When I try to load from any OS system disc (not the original Lombard disc, but any OS disc - 8.5, 9.2, Panther) holding down the C key, the CD drive runs for approximately 20 seconds, then stops, and on the screen I get a picture of a blank folder with a question mark - the Lombard is not reading the CD drive for some reason and won't boot from it. After a short wait OS 8.6 loads from the Hard drive.
I bought the computer on e-bay 4 years ago, and this has always been a problem - I just have been to busy in the past to deal with it.
Is there a simple command other than holding down the C key when restarting that will safely (remember I am a novice) allow me to bypass the hard drive and boot from the CD drive ?
I have done the following, which have all been unsuccessful at resolving this problem, and am out of ideas.
I have taken out all virus software from the system folder, cancelled all non-OS extensions and made sure the password extension is turned off.
    I have zapped the PRAM.
I have taken out the (upper) RAM chip to be sure that it wasn't the problem - no difference.
Chosen the CD drive in the Startup Control Panel.
Checked to see if the system and finder are locked - they're not.
The CD drive may be the problem, but it runs software CDs fine, and it is the correct drive for the Lombard.
Any suggestions ? I would appreciate any ideas that people have.
    Thanks.
    Steve
Powerbook Lombard   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

    Steve,
You have performed a lot of troubleshooting which is helpful. There are several causes for a no-boot to CD...
    1. Corrupted PRAM: You have addressed that.
    2. Peripheral/external device preventing boot: Disconnect ALL peripherals.
    3. Damaged or incorrect CD: The Lombard will not boot any CD earlier than OS 8.6, so the original Powerbook G3 Series Bronze Keyboard CD (has OS 8.6) or a retail MacOS 8.6 CD or newer will boot the Lombard. If you have a machine-specific OS 8.6 > 9.2.1 CD that has a computer name on it like iMac, iBook, Power Mac, etc, it will not boot your Lombard (there are a few exceptions.
Assuming you have no other problems, the Panther/10.3.x CD should boot unless you tried with only 64MB in the lower slot...then it may not boot...a Jaguar CD will, but not sure about Panther.
    4. Bad drive: I don't know if an optical drive that performs normally when running an OS from the HD can also have the problem of not booting a CD. If you can find another Lombard or Pismo, swap drives and test.
    5. The options for booting to a CD on the Lombard are the 'c' key, selecting the volume in the Startup Disk control panel, or the 'delete-option-command-shift' keys on restart...this forces a bypass of the HD.
    6. It doesn't matter what is on the HD when trying to boot a CD; it can have a working OS or it can be empty.
Try this: If you have a supported CD, put the CD in the drive and shut down (not restart). Now press the power button and hold down the four keys for a PRAM reset...command-option-R-P...wait for two startup chimes, release the keys and immediately press the 'c' key.

  • Windows 7 won't connect to bluetooth keyboard

I've been using a Logitech MX5000 keyboard for awhile. I switch between windows and mac via bootcamp all the time. Recently though, I can't use the keyboard while in Windows 7. The keyboard pairs fine, but it is all greyed out. I've tried every suggestion that I can find:
~The keyboard is no longer paired with Mac OSX
~I've tried using Generic windows bluetooth drivers
    ~I've reinstalled bootcamp drivers.
Nothing seems to give me a permanent fix, and I can't even get it to work at the moment. Anyone know how to fix this?

Sorry if this has already been done, but I've searched for an hour & can't find my solution.
Windows 7 is security-conscious to the point of paranoia. I assume this is the reason it won't sign on to the open services! I get a 'connected' message, followed by 'internet not available'. At no point am I offered a login, and there's nothing in the settings about it.
I bought this laptop so I can travel with it - I need it to recognise Fon and Openzone points wherever they're available, and log itself on. Just like my Blackberry does ...
This has to be a matter of overriding some settings (and perhaps adding a new one). Can someone advise, please?
    Hi. Welcome to the forums
My desktop Win 7 connects to FON (I pick the BTOpenzone connection), and when I then try a google, I get presented with a login page. If you aren't seeing the login page, then perhaps you can type in directly :-

Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • HT1941 Bluetooth keyboard setup has locked up keyboard, it's looking for a wireless keyboard, none of the keys on the keyboard are functioning, I can get out of the screen, or shut down my Mac, ... anyone??

The bluetooth keyboard setup has locked my keyboard, none of the keys are functioning, holding down the power button does nothing, I don't know how I got into wireless keyboard setup, and I don't know how to get out. Anyone?

    Hi:
I wish my suggestion had gotten you further.
I do suggest you try to connect the keyboard again.  The request for a number is a step in it trying to pair.  If it gets by the number, it sometimes takes a little while to get connected.  If you are unable to get it connected and want a new one, I have been using Apple Bluetooth keyboards for years - and I like them. The one I have (the newest model) only uses two batteries and is very thin.
Speaking of batteries, if you are not already doing so, you might consider rechargeables.  I have a drawer full of them and use a 15 minute charger.  I go tired of buying batteries and rechargeables are environmentally friendly to boot. At the moment, I use 2450 mAh Energizers and a 15 minute Energizer charger (all purchased new on eBay at a very reasonable price).
I am far from an iPad "expert," although I have one.  If my suggestion below does not help, post your question in a separate thread in the iPad forum.
I had a terrible time syncing my iCal on my Mac with my iPad iCal (confusing - hopefully it makes sense).  I quit using iCloud as that added to the confusion. There is a facility to one-time sync items.  When you connect your computer to your iPad, iTunes opens.  The system begins a process (automatic backup and so on). After it finishes, you can click on "info."  At the bottom of the screen, there is an advanced section.  You can select any of the items and then force it to sync. The iCal information from your computer would be deposited on the iPad.
After all that, I do not use a Google calendar so the information may be worthless to you.
If you want to reset the iPad to factory settings, you can do that when it is connected to iTunes (one of the options).  Me being me, I try never to erase anything.
